A message from your WRVP: !"#$%&"'("$)%*"+,-)%!./01%% It is unbelievable that the DECA year is already almost halfway over. Conferences are starting and people are preparing for their district competitions. As for me, this time is filled with college applications and getting ready for the busy month of November. I will be traveling all month long, all over the world. First, I head off to Washington D.C. for the Ultimate DECA Power Trip. November 11th through the 14th will be a great time, because three of the four regions are coming together for a perfect conference! I am really looking forward to see everyone plus my team, which I have not seen in a long time! After, I am off to Ethiopia in Africa. I am going with Colorado DECA’s charity, Project Mercy. The two weeks that I spend at Project Mercy will have a huge impact on my life. I am also going with past National DECA President, Kelly VanWoerkom! Last, I will be headed off to New York City with Aramis for the New York Experience. I have never been there before, and I am really looking forward to it. We will be there the second week, December 1st through the 5th. I look forward to seeing you all at these conferences and getting a chance to, “Expand our Network.” Thanks for reading and hope to see you soon!

Washington DECA FLC 2010

Imagine over seventeen hundred DECA members concentrated in a three-mile radius. The members are well dressed, enthusiastic, friendly, and always willing to flash our beloved DECA Diamond. During their free time, members frequent hotels, restaurants, and shops, leaving employees looking mildly confused, asking themselves could these really be high school students?! Inside the convention center, Island Oasis samples abound and members network with business professionals, who share their wisdom of the business world. Is this DECA Heaven, you might ask? Not exactly, it’s just something we like to call the Washington DECA Fall Leadership Conference.

On the afternoon of Sunday, October 24th, DECA members from all over Washington unloaded buses and vans in Bellevue, just northeast of Seattle, for two days full of learning, networking, fun, and free samples. Later that Sunday, members were able to connect with their respective Area Presidents during meetings and later on, an opening session, which featured a Miracle Minute to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities (we raised $2,111.79!) Plus there was Derek Johnson, the founder and CEO of Tatango.com. who was named by Business Week Magazine as one of the top twenty-five entrepreneurs under the age of twenty-five! Derek’s message was candid and relatable to the members (He even got away with sporting denim- usually a Washington DECA faux pas). The next day, members were given the opportunity to attend various breakout sessions with speakers from Microsoft, Tatango, the University of Washington, FIDM, and many more! That night, after dinners with their chapters, members attended the Entertainment Session, featuring Dr. Jim Wand, a hypnotist, whose talents were so immense that he was able to convince one of the State Officers (I won’t name names) that he was Lady GaGa!

On Tuesday, the final day of the conference, members were able to dust off their competitive skills by participating in a mock competition. All members were able to prepare and present a role-play with a subsequent feedback session with their judges. With a stress-free, informative practice run under our belts, Washington DECA is well on its way to collecting some serious hardware at ICDC.

Truly, the 2010 Fall Leadership Conference was one to remember. Yes, we learned the basics of entrepreneurship and business, we practiced our DECA Diamonds, and we were amazed by a live performance by “Lady GaGa.” But what was the best part about FLC? It was the members, enthusiastic and genuinely happy to take steps outside their comfort zones so that we could join together to dream bigger, work harder, and achieve the amazing.
