November Newsletter 2013 -...

On Wed., Nov. 6, 2013, our Woodland Grade 8 students will participate in the DSBN “Grade 9 Preview Day.” This day is an opportunity for Grade 8 students to ex- perience “a day in the life of a high school student at their home school.” This year students have the option of choosing Sir Winston Churchill or St. Catharines Col- legiate as their home school based on our boundaries. There will be 2 visits—one on Nov. 6th to Collegiate and one on Nov. 27th to Sir Winston. A letter went home with students Oct. 28th and needs to be signed and returned to Mr. Ott by Friday, November 1. Thanks! Hallowe’en is over, which means that November has arrived! Thanks to all of the parents who helped out with our Hallowe’en events. All students were on their best behavior, making it a very enjoyable day for all. Over $400 was collected for UNICEF! Way to go Woodland! Our students are actively involved in their aca- demic studies and the teachers have been busy assessing our students for the PROGRESS report cards which went home on Tuesday, October 29. Teachers have been arranging interviews with parents for the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 5. Re- member that this report focuses on learning skills and will not have grades for the academic sub- jects. The book fair will be open for purchases on that evening. Thank-you to all those students and parents who supported Woodland School’s QSP Magazine sales drive. We appreciate your time and effort toward Woodland’s major yearly fund raiser. At this time, the estimated sales tally is over $7000! Students who had sales over $300 include: Rich- ard, Caleb, Josh Larochelle, Josh Ledwez, Rachel, and Tavish. The top seller was Erika with sales over $400! Super job Woodland! Today, November 1st is Random Act of Kindness Day. This is being promoted in DSBN as a day to recognize kindness and humanity across the Niagara region. Acts of kindness can be simple or elaborate including: sending a thank –you note to someone, holding the door open for someone, teaching someone a new skill, offering a genuine compliment to someone, or donating canned goods to a food bank, just to name a few. We will be looking for acts of kindness at Woodland on this date and we encourage you to take part at home too! Our Remembrance Day assembly will be presented by the Junior division on Nov. 11th. The assembly will begin at 10:45 am. Everyone is welcome. Trunk sale: It was a sunny and cool day for our first Wood-land trunk sale held on Sunday, October 27th, but it was nice to get some of the community out. Thanks to the parents who baked muffins, the vendors who came out and the community customers who stopped by. Special thanks to Mrs. Hanna for organizing this original event! Fundraising money is always used to benefit the students of Woodland. Next on the list is to purchase library books including the Forest of Reading books for our 3 book clubs (Blue Spruce, Silver Birch and Red Maple)( ($800), as well as covering the cost of bus trans-portation to the Oliver show scheduled for Wednesday, December 4th. Council also always provides $10 a child to each homeroom teacher to purchase educa-tional items for the classroom. THANKS ! Our School Advisory Council meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 6:45 pm in the staff room. We are always looking for new members. Mark Tuesday, November 26 on your calendar and we’ll see you there! Also, don’t forget the DSBN Parent Involvement Confer-ence held at Eden High School on Wed. Nov. 6th from 4 to 9pm. Childcare is available.

Character Education –Student of the Month Our Student of the Month assembly on October 25th was an exciting one as

our new t-shirts were distributed to all of the students who were acknowl-

edged by their teacher for displaying the character trait, respect, over the

months of September and October as well as Orange & Black day. Con-

gratulations! Class 7/8 and Mr. Ott presented an exciting and enter-

taining show with a power point award ceremony and live entertain-

ment produced and directed by the class. Well done! Junior soccer

finalists were awarded badges, and the RED colour house was de-

clared the winner for the month. Next month, our character trait will

be RESPONSIBILITY.

OLIVER, The Musical

Woodland is preparing to attend, Oliver, The Musical at the Scotia Bank Conven-tion Center in Niagara Falls on Wednesday, December 4th. All classes will be attending this exciting theatre production along with many parents who have shown interest in coming along for this Adventure of the Arts! The cost is $20 per person and permission forms and payment are due by Monday, November 4th in order to reserve our seats. Thanks to our parent council for generously agreeing to cover the cost of our bus transportation! Please contact the office if there is a need for help with payment, we don’t want students to miss out.

November 15th PD Day

Although there are no classes on the PD Day on November 15th, that doesn’t stop our dynamic staff from continuing to be life-long learners. The Woodland-staff members will once again be working together as a learning team to im-prove our content understanding of the Mathematics curriculum. We are going to continue to have learning conversations around the research-based instruc-tional strategies we have been using to facilitate the learning of our young mathematicians. It promises to be an amazing day!

Woodland Christmas Concert Mark your calendars! The Woodland Christmas Concert is scheduled for Tuesday, December 10th at 7:00 pm at Central Community Church . We hope to have a rehearsal on Monday, December 9th in the morning. Stay tuned for more details closer to the date.

Thank-you to all of the parents who drove their children to practices, helped to take atten-dance, and drove to the meets to cheer on, supervise, and drive runners. Special thanks to Miss Vandermeer and Mrs. Strickland for their many hours of training.

The Intermediate boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams have completed their league play and are heading into the play-offs next week. Good luck! Team members in-clude: Joanna, Ruby, Bethany, Emily, Jessie, Hannah, Alyssa, Mackenzie, Sheilagh, Carter, Max, Will, Joel, David, Brent, Mitchell, Josh, Brad H., Brad S., and Ben. THE SECRETS OF SELF

CONFIDENCE—An Anti-bullying Magic Show with IncrediBrent and

Super Sarah!

Students in grades JK to Grade 8 were enter-tained by IncrediBrent and Super Sarah in a

fun-filled magic show presentation with a very important and positive message: The 4 Secrets to Self-confidence: Anything is Possible, Be-lieve in Yourself, You’re Not Alone, and Find your Magic. Through the magicians’ stories, our students were encouraged to conquer bullying by believing in themselves but also to seek help in adults and friends if bullying occurs. Fol-lowing the performance, every student received an auto-graphed postcard to reflect on their own strengths, be-liefs and “their own magic.” Many students shared their reflections with their class and some shared them over the announcements too! Thanks to Woodland fundrais-ing campaigns for paying for this entertaining and learn-ing experience!

The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school from Tuesday, November 5th to Friday, November 8th! What better way to promote reading with our students than by supporting this important literary event. We invite your entire family to participate by purchas-ing the latest and greatest in children’s books. Did you know that for every $10 you spend at the Fair up to $6 comes directly back to our school? Your support of this vital literary event is key in helping us obtain new books and resources for our library and class-rooms. Our goal is to sell 225 books!! You’ll find hundreds of quality books at our Book Fair with a wide assort-ment for all reading levels. A Book Fair flyer that provides a preview of only a FEW of the many books available to purchase at our Fair will be sent home on Friday, November 1st. The flyer also contains a special Family Event Draw ballot that parents can deposit during our Interview night on Tuesday, November 5th from 3:30 to 8 pm. You could win $50 in books – $25 for your family PLUS $25 for your child’s classroom! Don’t forget to mark the Book Fair dates on your calendar! We look for-ward to seeing you during our Scholastic Book Fair and thank you, in ad-vance, for supporting this great literary fundraiser. Mostly, thank you for be-lieving in books and the importance reading has on your child’s future.
