Principal’s Message:

With the start of the Fall Season, Hardee Junior High School continues to focus on student growth and achievement. With 2 months of school behind us, we’ve already held our first benchmark assessments in reading, math, writing, and science. Information from these important assessments has been shared with both students and parents and our teachers are using the results to monitor both what is being taught (curriculum) and how it is taught (instruction). I have no doubt that all of these efforts will pay off in aca-demic growth for all of our students. As parents, you can do your part by insuring that your child is pre-sent and on time daily, prepared for instructional activities and learning, and working on enriching activi-ties at home. Encouraging your child to read at home is also very important. Although we’ve said it many times before, it’s still true that by working cooperatively together, we can best insure success for our stu-dents.

6th Grade: Students will continue using the scientific method for investigations along with mapping and graphing data. Our next unit is on weathering, ero-

sion, deposition and landforms.

7th Grade is also working on Earth Science including the rock cycle and plate tectonics. Mr. McCandless would like to encourage ALL parents to set aside

time every night for review and STUDY. His students and parents can visit

him on his site www.mc-science.com for study guides and links to Think

Central , the science book’s website. From there students can access their

book online, have passages read to them, multi-lingual glossaries, online virtu-

al labs and interactive lessons! 8th Grade will be moving to Big Idea 5, Earth in Space and Time. They will

be focusing on the Universe and stars which is Unit 2 of the Fusion text book.

SCIENCE FAIR NEWS : Students should have already turned in the Scien-tific Question, Hypothesis, Materials List and Bibliography to their science

teacher by September 30. Next big deadline was October 7th when Proce-

dures, and necessary paper work should be turned in. Mrs. Miller’s science lab students have been going back in time to measure

and compare how our continents have moved and changed over millions of

years. The next focus will be on what causes Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and mountains. From there we will begin our Energy Investigations, Big Idea

7.

Language Arts and Reading

The Language Arts and Reading Department here at Hardee Junior High School is encouraging you and your child to “Fall

into a Good Book.” Each grade level has begun reading a novel in class. Sixth grade is reading Touching Sprit Bear, seventh

grade is reading Theodore Boone Kid Lawyer, and the eighth grade is reading The Hunger Games. During the month we will

be focusing on vocabulary. Students will use context clues to infer meanings of unfamiliar words, analyze phrases and word

relationships in context, and analyze multiple-meanings of words in context.

Social Studies

8th Grade Social Studies classes have just completed the Revolutionary War. We

had a lot of fun recreating the original Boston Tea Party. Our classes performed outdoor activities to re-enact this. We will begin reading a novel in our classes

about a boy fighting in the Revolutionary War and all the things he experienced at

an early age. This will complete our unit on the Revolutionary War.

6th grade is learning about : Egyptian Culture, Ancient Israelites, and the Birth of

Judaism.

7th grade is learning about: Maps, reading maps, learning about latitude and

longitude, scale, and direction.

HJH is collecting Box Tops for Education so please help us out by sending in box tops with your child. There are many products in the grocery store that contain

the box top logo and HJH will earn money for every one we send them.
