Editor’s Note

What up guys? Hopefully I’ll get enough time to keep doing this as a monthly magazine. We got some cool updates this issue and its almost December which means time to save up and buy something you really want during the holiday season.

I also had the time to make a 3d design concept for a store that we might have in the near future. This is just a concept but I would be interested to know what you guys would like to see in a retail outlet that sells sound equipment.

Chicco didn’t want me to use his pic-ture so I thought of putting this random dude with a Blue Microphone. It looks like he’s really happy with his ball so maybe you should get some too :)

Midas announces software version 1.11 for XL8 at PLASA 2009

PLASA 2009, LONDON: Midas has announced the latest software upgrade for the XL8 Live Performance System. This major functional upgrade is available free of charge to XL8 owners, and includes a powerful and comprehensive new feature set targeted specifically at theatrical applications.

Most digital consoles will perform crossfades between two snapshots: a timed transition between two fader positions. The new XL8 v1.11 software allows the user not only to cross-fade fader levels on a global basis, but to configure one or multiple groups within each snapshot recall, which can fade up and down, and at different rates of change. These ‘morph’ groups can be used perform the more common fader transitions, but other con-sole parameters such as bus sends and pan positions, including surround imaging, can be programmed to morph between two states, as automated timed events. Fade-in and fade-out times can be configured separately, and specific ‘switched’ events - ie mutes - can be triggered at the start or end of each morph process.

Hardware provision in the form of a jog wheel is included for instant user intervention to speed up, slow down or pause the morph process at any time during a transition.“XL8 v1.11 continues to advance the XL8 platform,” says Midas and Klark Teknik brand de-velopment manager Richard Ferriday. “It’s another example of Midas’ continuing commit-ment to listen to our customers, support XL8 investors and keep the worlds’ finest available live audio mixing system in pole position.”

The new XL8 v1.11 functionality will also be available to PRO6 owners, who continue to benefit from Midas’ cross-platform development policy.

Electro-Voice announces release of LAPS V2.2A

Electro-Voice is pleased to announce the release of LAPS V2.2A; this new version of LAPS, the Electro-Voice line array modeling and design program, is available for free download from the EV website at: http://www.electrovoice.com/documents/ev/LAPS%202.2A%20Installer.zip LAPS is an essential tool for sound system designers who use EV line array loudspeakers. Using LAPS, a designer can quickly enter an array design and assess its performance. LAPS can model a full sound system, including main arrays, secondary arrays such as delays and front-fills, and subwoofers. After the final system design is chosen, LAPS provides full rigging specifications. LAPS includes comprehensive checking of rigging working loads, and will not predict perfor-mance of rigs which it considers to be unsafe. The new version includes a special page for predicting coverage of subwoofer arrays. Proper use of this page will in many cases result in significant bass coverage and qual-ity improvement at little or no additional cost. LAPS supports all EV line array products and related subwoofer models. The new version is designated LAPS 2.2A. It includes the following specific changes: NEW WORKBOOK PAGESThe following new workbook pages have been added:• Arrays Bass page, for predicting horizontal coverage of subwoofer arrays.• Air Loss page, for predicting sound attenuation in air over large distances.• Cable Loss page, for modeling the resistive and capacitive effects of loudspeak er cable.• Supported Products page, which lists all products supported by LAPS 2.2A. Staccato’51

The bass world’s response to our introduction of award winning RH450 and Clas-sic450 has been overwhelming. Now, with the help of a true world-class bass leg-end, we introduce our third amp to deliver instant world-class bass tone - we are proud to present our cooperation with, Tower Of Power’s Rocco Prestia on Stac-cato’51

Think of legendary bass players and Francis Rocco Prestia features on every list. For over 40 years now Rocco’s bass has been underpinning the groove for Californian funk legends Tower of Power. In that time Rocco has defined his own style and be-come synonymous with the much-imitated ‘Finger Style Funk’ that he pioneered back in the ‘60s and ‘70s.

Now TC and Rocco have joined forces to make Staccato’51 - a custom-tuned version of the RH450 that’s been made to Rocco’s exact specification and ear. It may look like the RH450 bass head, but the sound design is completely different and meets the demands of a legend like Rocco Prestia - both on stage and in the studio.

Rocco’s sound design on Staccato’51 fits his legendary finger-muting technique like a glove. The full-bodied tone with plenty of highs and lows as well as the ultra fast precision response enhances the percussive elements of Rocco’s playing to perfection.

In addition to the sheer tone shaping, Rocco has added a touch of our Spec-traComp™ per-string compression to tighten the sound even more. And finally a touch of TubeTone™ brings out the growl of Staccato’51 when really digging into those low-end notes with his powerful right hand technique.

To achieve perfect tone, Rocco pairs his Staccato’51 with a stack of our RS cabi-nets - An RS410 and two RS212s - giving him both punch and enough low end to stand out on stage with the 10-piece Tower of Power band.

RS112

We continue to make waves in the bass market, this time with another cabinet in the RS range. The RS112 is a great-sounding cabinet to carry, plug and play any-where…

Our RS112 is a new high quality compact cabinet in the RS bass range. RS112 de-livers TC tone in a small and compact package. But don’t let the tight design fool you, RS112 handles 200 watts of power and the 12” driver and 1” tweeter is the per-fect choice for a full toned sound anywhere spaces comes at a premium. As with all of the RS range, the 12” driver and tweeter (with rear HF adjustment) are custom made by the Eminence and offer superior quality and power.

RS112 is ideal as a standalone cabinet for smaller gigs and because it maintains the RS stackability, it can slot in with other RS cabinets to bolster your sound and scale up you system. The portability of RS112 is blatantly obvious, with its 30 lbs weight, small size and top placed handle it is a virtual grab’n go cab.

Features

Great sound - The Eminence 12” and coaxial placed 1” combination secures fast response and punch while the rear cabinet vent adds to the final touch to the ultra low end reproduction.

Stackable and portable - As well as being easy to carry, RS112 maintains the RS range’s ‘stackability’ concept. All the cabinets in the range may be stacked to-gether in various combinations. The RS112, for example, fits perfectly under an RS210 making an ideal combination for small to medium sized gigs.

Connectivity - RS112 features two high quality Speakon connectors as well as a heavy duty HF attenuator on the rear side.

The Vestax VFX-1 is an effects controller unit designed to compliment the Vestax VCI-300 and Serato ITCH. The Vestax VFX-1 has a powerful range of effects that are hosted within the supplied version of Serato ITCH DJ software. This is the very first product that will activate Serato DJ FX, simply by connecting the VFX-1 via USB. The range of DJ FX that can be selected have been specifically sculptured with live performance DJs in mind. Tempo based DJ FX like the Delay and modulation effects can be clocked from the prebuilt BPM of the track, or you can manually tap the tempo to achieve different effect timing. It’s very simple to select your desired effect with the rotary Effect dial. The Beats knob then lets you quickly select the desired time division. A large silver Depth knob is assigned to give precise control over parameter 1 of each effect. A clever Mod knob lets you quickly access parameter 2. Pushing down the Mod knob gives ad-vanced access to parameter 3. The Vestax VFX-1 is styled to match the popular Vestax VCI-300 but will also work with other ITCH DJ controllers. Connecting the VCI-300 and VFX-1 together will activate the effect unit of Serato ITCH - no special installation is re-quired. However, you must be running the latest version of Serato ITCH.

The Pressing matter of Shibuya Breaks

You may remember a piece about Serato trumpeting the brilliance of vinyl and set-ting up a project called Serato Pressings specifically designed to give you very limited edition releases in actual real vinyl. Previous releases have been from different artists, but the new Shibuya Breaks release is all about servicing DJs wanting familiar scratch sounds at hand as well as the Scratch Live control tone on one piece of vinyl.

Coming in 4 different colours, one side is full of all the breaks, sentences and such like that some of you will probably already have too many of. But the beauty is that you just flip it over and you have the SSL control tone. I feel that this is very much a col-lectors thing more than anything else, but even a hardened sceptic like me wouldn’t mind one of each. I guess the vinyl bug never goes away. So part tool, part battle weapon and part object of lust - you decide where you sit and use them accordingly.

The blurb from Stokyo:Serato’s official record project “SERATO PRESSINGS” introduces SHIBUYA BREAKS. A new flavor for HIP-HOP / R&B / SCRATCH DJ’S/TURNTABLISTS and all other genre lovers to enjoy! A record for those DJ’S who embrace the hybrid game of analog and digital is finally available!

This record is designed to facilitate the Mix/Party Rock/Scratch/Battle DJ to use Serato on one side while flipping over and finding the Shibuya Breaks side with all your favorite scratches, beats, skip proof to locked grooves for ensuring continuous beats. On top of that, tones and 95 BPM on beat Scratch sentences, party breaks, anthems, sound ef-fects & tracks to make sure you don’t skip a beat! From your classic “Ahhhhhhh Fresh” to the more advanced scratch sentences from the pros of today are all found on side A (Shibuya Breaks side). On the Serato Scratch Live tone control side, you will find the Vinyl Scroll feature, only found on official Serato vinyl!

So what is Shibuya? If you’re a digger or a vinyl enthusiast, you know what we’re talk-ing about! One of the World capitals of record digging, vinyl and DJ culture, we bring you a little taste from our backyard in Japan, Shibuya. Puzzled by our logos? Google, Hachikou and find the legend behind our favorite mascot. This is history in the making, and they’ll be gone before you know it. Make sure that you place your orders as this will be sold out in a matter of days.

Jamiroquai fly sky high with Focusrite

Jamiroquai recently broke several world records when they performed a gig on a plane to Greece. Sound engineer Rick Pope chose a Focusrite Saffire PRO to re-cord this most unusual and historic of performances. Focusrite’s Saffire has proved its worth yet again, this time in what can only be de-scribed as one of its more unusual outings, 35,000 feet in the air. Rick Pope, Jamir-oquai’s long-time sound engineer, used the Saffire to record a one off, record-breaking performance by the band in the front of a plane on a trip to Greece.

A specially selected audience mostly comprised of competition-winning Jamiro-quai fans witnessed the “Gig In The Sky” and the band performed half a dozen tracks. Pope takes up the story;

“We had a full band, six musicians and three backing singers. They only took out two rows or three rows of seats for us. It was basically where you come in through the main door and we had a 10 and a half by nine and a half foot square to set up in!”

“I needed to record the gig and needed something standalone and FireWire be-cause it was all done on batteries as obviously there was no mains in the plane. So I needed something that would power off FireWire from my computer and the Saffire PRO 26i/o was the first thing that came to mind. I’d heard some of the stuff done on a Saffire so I thought I’d give it a go. Even compared to Pro Tools HD it performed really well.”

Page 23: November Issue - NMK Magazine

23

“It was simple once it was up and running: stand alone, just hit record, go and that was it. It did everything I wanted it to do and was ideal for the gig because every-thing had to be scaled down. I had a really tiny desk that you could rest on your lap, a laptop and this little 1U bit of kit which was compact, small and sonically sounded great.”

Pope reveals there are no plans for further mile high gigs and that at least three world records is enough for now!“Someone said it was five world records but all I know is that it was the highest gig in the world, the longest distance travelled during a gig and the fastest gig in the world!”

“We had a bit of turbulence and everyone had to sit down (otherwise no one would have been able to see) but I think people enjoyed it. Yeah, I think it went pretty well for a gig on a plane!”

The Focusrite Saffire 6 USB is a 2 In / 4 Out USB audio interface. It uses the same award-winning Focus-rite mic-pres as the rest of the Saffire range. This makes it the best value, and best sounding interface in its class. Its output configuration is also ideal for laptop DJs.

It is ultra-reliable and easy to set up, providing you with the simplest route to record into, and play back from your computer. It has lower latency than any of its rivals, and professional analogue to digital con-verters ensure you get the best possible signal into your recording software.

With 2 mic-pres, multiple outputs and MIDI I/O, the Saffire 6 USB can be at the centre of your home record-ing set-up. However, its reliability means that you can take it out and record on location with confidence. The 2 in 4 out configuration is perfect for laptop DJs who need to be able to cue up material, or send two different signals to either side of a DJ mixer.

This is our most affordable interface to date, and it comes with Ableton Live Lite 7, Novation’s Bass Station synthesizer and over a gigabyte of samples. In addition to all this, you get the Focusrite FX Suite, which includes a compressor, gate, reverb and EQ to upgrade your standard AU/VST effects.

The Focusrite Saffire PRO 24 DSP is Focusrite’s latest 16 In / 8 Out FireWire audio interface, featuring real-time DSP-powered tracking and mixing solutions tailor-made for the modern home studio environment.

Alongside DSP-powered Compression and EQ for latency-free tracking and ‘comfort’ reverb, is VRM; a Virtual Reference Monitoring technology that lets you hear your mix in different environments, through dif-ferent speakers and from different positions, all just using headphones.

VRM makes Saffire PRO 24 DSP the only interface capable of simulating over one hundred different moni-toring scenarios through your headphones. VRM overcomes the major obstacle for mixing with head-phones by giving you multiple perspectives on your mix, as if you were listening through speakers. Indeed, noise levels from mixing through speakers can make it impossible for most to mix at home, especially late at night; with VRM, you can mix anytime, anywhere. Using any pair of monitoring headphones, VRM let’s you choose your mixing environment from a living room, a bedroom studio, or a professional studio. You then simply choose where you are positioned in that room and what speakers you listen through.

Saffire PRO 24 DSP draws on twenty-five years of mic-pre excellence. The two Focusrite pre-amps capture every subtle nuance of your sound whilst ensuring low noise and distortion. Meanwhile, high-quality digital conversion and JetPLL™ jitter elimination technology ensure pristine audio quality as your audio flows be-tween the analogue and digital domains.

Saffire PRO 24 DSP’s other real-time DSP-powered effects also exhibit Focusrite’s uncompromised ap-proach to audio quality. EQ, Compression and ‘Comfort’ Reverb sonically derived from the ‘Focusrite Plug-in Suite’ (also included as VST/AU plug-ins) are all integrated within the Saffire Mix Control software, providing professional latency-free tools for tracking and monitoring.

Alongside the two Focusrite pre-amps are a host of I/O options; two additional analogue inputs, six ana-logue outputs, ADAT inputs (for expanding the interface with, for example, Focusrite’s OctoPre), stereo SPDIF I/O and 2 virtual ‘loopback’ inputs for routing digital audio between software applications - ideal for capturing online audio. Front panel 5-LED metering for each analogue input offers accurate viewing of levels.

Saffire Mix Control, the zero-latency 16 x 8 DSP Mixer/Router software provided with Saffire PRO 24 DSP, sets a new standard at this price point for audio interface control. It features flexible output routing and monitoring, as well as intuitive one-click set-up solutions designed to help you track, monitor and mix as easily as possible.

Saffire PRO 24 DSP also comes with all the additional tools needed to start making music right away. These include the latest version of the Focusrite Plug-in Suite, which provides a significant upgrade from your standard sequencer effects. AIR12 – more nearfield muscleWith the launch of AIR12 life has gotten harder on high-end studio pros, broadcast engineers and OB van op-erators, leaving these discerning audio professionals with even more setup choices in top end nearfield monitoring for stereo, 5.1 and up.

This new, powerful nearfield speaker made its debut at IBC 2007 in Amsterdam, Holland, thereby adding further to an already extensive range of networked studio moni-tors.

AIR12 includes the Air Soft Monitor Control featuring solo, mute and calibrated levels. Different types of AIRs may be attached to the network, enabling, for instance, small-er and diffused surrounds in combination with larger front speakers.

Dynasty expanded

The Dynaudio Acoustics BM 5A set a new benchmark for what an active nearfield studio monitor could be. The new BM 6A mk II and BM 12A take advantage of that same design philosophy while offering more power, more headroom and wider frequency response.

As one of the few manufacturers that build our own drivers, we believe in a no compro-mise approach to designing studio monitors, whatever the application. The new BM 6A mk II and BM 12A are no exception to that rule.

DC

Two-In-Six-Out Loudspeaker Processor

Based on a two-in, six-out topology, the DC-One is designed primarily for users of small-to-medium sized sound systems in both mobile and installed applica-tions. While the unit is an all-new development based on a powerful SHARC processor, it is 100 percent compatible with all settings from other Electro-Voice signal processors, including the Dx38—the best choice for achieving maximum performance with an EV loudspeaker system.

A large part of DC-One’s development was aimed at ensuring that users can easily handle its serious digital horsepower and high-end audio performance. Though free PC-Editor software is available, the DC-One can be easily oper-ated via the front panel. Direct access buttons, six predefined configuration modes (one being free configuration), straightforward output delay settings, and true professional metering all allow for safe operation.

DC-One’s unique “front-panel access control” allows the user to select a per-sonal library of accessible presets (out of 60 factory and 20 user presets). In ad-dition, the user can determine which individual parameters in each preset are locked (e.g. factory predefined output parameters) or editable (e.g. master EQ or delay settings).

The DC-One has a 19-inch chassis that is deep enough to match typical am-plifier depths, a front panel USB connector for the PC-Editor, and accepts ei-ther analogue or digital (AES-EBU) input signals; a six-dB input pad is available. The RS232 on the rear also provides eight contact closures for preset changes, or allows two units to be linked for larger systems. The PC-Editor software, as well as firmware updates allowing additional functions, will be available on www.electrovoice.com

With the unrelenting absorption of signal processing into digital mixing consoles, outboard gear now has to contribute something extra special merely to justify its space in the rack. The new DN530 Cre-ative Quad Gate does just that. It brings some exciting new tools to the audio party. The DN530 features “Transient Ac-centing”, a creative feature providing an easy way to enhance the attack enve-lope beyond merely opening the gate. This can provide up to 12dB of additional transient energy and its primary applica-tion is to provide additional impact on drums and percussion instruments, al-though it can be used to enhance the impact of many instruments, including acoustic stringed instruments such as gui-tar and piano.

Transient Accenting is unique in that it allows the operator precise control over the amount of enhancement applied to each channel of processing.

The DN530 brings a creative flare to drum channels with its unique accent feature which largely eliminates the need for ex-cessive EQ or compression.

Compressors were originally devised to reduce the dynamic range of audio signals. To do this they use gain modification that makes adjustments to signal levels automatically, dependant on the level and dynamic of the signal itself, and upon the character and con-trol settings of the particular compressor unit.

Throughout the history of dynamics processing many different types of compressor have been produced using many different types of gain technology. Each type has a distinctive sound. Us-ers have found many applications which benefit from these often unintentional compression audio artifacts, taking the use of com-pressors far beyond simple dynamic range reduction, sometimes even generating the complete reverse; dynamic enhancement. It is with these creative applications in mind, that the DN540 has been designed to offer a latency-free, comprehensive and com-pact dynamics processing package.

With its unique presence feature the DN540 will be especially use-ful on vocals to eliminate the “pumping” effects of spill and to add “air” to the sound without introducing noise.

96 Tracks, 96kHz, 24-bit, 9+ Hours. Simple, yet powerful. The concert sound industry is constantly evolving. Bands and artists are increasingly being re-

corded for live CDs, DVDs, Internet releases and for general archive purposes; all are extremely valuable additional revenue streams for both the artist and service companies alike. Secondly, with limited production rehearsals now being the norm, mix engineers require live recordings so that a “virtual sound check” can be performed. This removes the need to directly involve the art-ist, and all the associated additional expense and time that a traditional sound check or rehearsal process incurs. The “virtual sound check” also allows the mix engineer the time to fine tune his mix and use the full potential that digital console automation offers.

To help meet the concert sound industry’s requirements, Klark Teknik has engineered an extremely easy to use, simple to setup, standalone hard disk recorder - the DN9696. This High Resolution Audio Recorder of-fers 96 tracks of 96kHz audio at 24-bit, with a massive nine hours of internal storage. There is now no need for external computers linked to multiple non-roadworthy systems with complicated interconnections, just a simple plug and play unit with dedicated Play, Stop and Record front panel transport controls. As well as the simple front panel transport controls, there is a Solo/PFL system with track selection and head-phone output for monitoring. Plus dedicated controls for en-tering marker, or locate points, during a recording with the op-tion to use a footswitch, as well as forward and backward skip buttons for moving between marker points during playback. All this has been developed with the live environment in mind. The DN9696 offers an el-egant, yet powerful, set of tools for the user. The screen based software interface offers in-

depth control of both record-ing and playback functions. There are echoes of the unique features of Midas’ digital audio systems within the DN9696, for example the use of POPula-tion groups to view, colour and edit tracks, an ‘Input Sheet’ for quickly naming all tracks as well as ‘dual operator’ control of the system. All audio data is stored as industry standard Broadcast Wave files (BWAV) which can be easily imported into any professional DAW sys-tem. Uniquely, the DN9696 has a mirrored drive capability, al-lowing simultaneous internal and external HD recording for real time backup and redun-dancy. This eliminates the need for timeconsuming copying at the end of a performance. The DN9696 can be used to provide a ‘Virtual Sound Check’ when used in conjunction with a Mi-das digital mixing system. This allows the FOH mix engineer to sound check without the artistpresent. Essentially a record-ing of the previous show is used to allow the engineer to fine tune aspects of the mix and update automation scenes if necessary. On monitors the

DN9696 can again be used as the audio source to enable the engineer to mix basic levels and create a starting point for the band. The DN9696 can also be used as a standalone hard disk recorder using Midas digi-tal system building blocks, for example DL431 microphonesplitters or DL351 modular I/O units. They offer flexible I/O op-tions, both analogue and digi-tal, are easily configured, pro-viding analogue line I/O as well as AES/EBU connectivity with sample rate conversion. The DL rackmount components offer outstanding analogue to digi-tal conversion with the superb audio quality of a Midas ‘frontend’, including the legendary Midas microphone preamplifi-ers. Of course any other AES50 equipped device can be used as an alternative input source. The DN9696 occupies only 5U of rack space with very simple cable requirements and does not demand the expense of a dedicated recording tech-nician. After all, all you really need is Record, Stop and Play.

NMK @ The Fridge - Hop Hop SymposiumIt was an amazing night for Hip

Hop heads and educating people on the culture and the misinterpreta-tions about the music genre. The night started with break dancers talking about the importance of breaking and showed how it was done. Next came on a spoken word artist, after was a performance by ‘The Recipe’ and Aar-on Kim on the cello and finally collabo-ration by a bunch of artists including Mestiza on vocals and Rami the bassist from Abri. This was the first time NMK has sponsored an event by The Fridge and will probably do some more in the near future. The Fridge is a great place to learn various things as they have different music and dance workshops going on. They also organize events and are developing the music scene in the country by getting local and inter-national artists together. Do check out their website for their upcoming events.
