are grateful for your support of the program.

Cold weather and conversion to heat came early this year. But fall filter changes are still to come. Please l o o k for notices and be prepared for this to take place in early November. While we change filters twice a year, keep in mind you can always place a ticket to have it done at other times as well. If you’ve got a long haired cat, you might want it done every three months.

Enjoy the sights and sounds and events of this fall season!

Manager’s Corner

I’m glad to hear that folks enjoyed the pumpkin theme of October! It seemed a good way to extend the festive holiday time of year to three months! Coming up we’ll have our food drive, a November happy hour, Thanksgiving pie sale, the Toys for Tots campaign and our eagerly awaited winter social. If you haven’t been before, prepare to eat well and have fun. Save the date! This year we’ll be celebrating on Tuesday, December 15th!

Thanks again for the tremendous response to our fall clothing drive. It’s not only a great way to clean out your closet, but we also get to help others! Calvert House and Martha’s Table

If you can name this painting (right) and its location, you may win a fabulous Calvert House mug, an Open City Gift Card and bragging rights. A drawing from all correct responses will determine the winner.

Submit your answer in writing to the front desk or e-mail it to [email protected] by November 15th. Be sure to include your name and apartment number with your response.

The Prodigal Son (1938) by Heinz Warneke,

a German-born sculptor, is located in the Bishop’s Garden of the Washington National Cathedral. The sculpture was exhibited during the 1939 New York World Fair and in major American museums before finding a permanent home in DC. It was then donated in 1961 to the National Cathedral

by Coleman Jennings. Warneke immigrated to the

U.S. in 1923. He later taught at the George Washington University and the Corcoran School of Art.

’Tis the Season for Giving

Once again, Calvert House will be collecting canned and bottled goods along with other nonperishable food items to donate to the National Capital Food Bank during this upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Beginning on Friday, November 7th, there will be a bin at the front desk area to collect any items you may wish to donate. A list of “most needed” items will be posted by the bin.

The drive will end on Tuesday, November 17th so that we may transport the goods to the food bank in time for Thanksgiving. Please take this time to go through your pantry or pick up some items for those in need.

During the December holidays, Calvert House will be working with the U.S. Marine Corps for their annual Toys for Tots drive. Please bring a new, unwrapped toy to the bin provided at the front desk. Further information and dates for the toy drive will be posted at a later date.

Being in the center of things has its advantages. It’s great to head outside and have your choice of cafés and restaurants, but what about when you just want to stay in? Sure, there’s Take Out Taxi, Grub Hub and Seamless, but someone has finally taken the concept of restaurant food delivery and made it even better!

If you haven’t yet heard of Door Dash, you soon will. It’s the Uber of food delivery. Drivers are in the city just waiting to go to your restaurant, order and bring you whatever your heart desires. Just set up an online account you can use from either your computer or laptop; there also is an app for your phone. Opening the account is the easy part. What’s harder is choosing from over 300 restaurants available to Calvert House residents!

The options are amazing, from Popeye’s Fried Chicken to Ruth Chris Steakhouse. There is no minimum order and the charge is just $5.99. Best of all, your first order is just $1.00, so it’s certainly worth trying. There are ways to get credits with the company, through referring friends or by frequent use, that will count towards your delivery charge.

Door Dash updates you on the progress of your order by text and your driver will phone you with any questions about your order or its delivery. There is no need for cash or paying by card on delivery, the food is just dropped off to you and charged to your account card. You can even include a driver’s tip if you wish.

Want a pizza but not just any delivery pizza? Try Door Dash and get Two Amy’s or Pete’s New Haven Apizza. Wish there was a place to order just desserts? There is! Wishing you could order smoothies or have brunch food delivered at home? You can! Door Dash has perfected the process. And with Calvert House being so centrally located to so many great eateries, the city’s best food really can be at your door in no time.

Events DC BEERFEST AT NATS PARK—On Saturday, November 7th, the DC Beer Festival returns to Nationals Park, bringing together dozens of craft breweries featuring fall seasonal beers, plus food trucks, lawn games, DJs and more throughout the park. Admission is $40 for general admission to either the 1st Session (Noon to 3 PM) or the 2nd Session (5 to 8 PM). ZOOLIGHTS—ZooLights at the National Zoo offers a display of thousands of sparkling lights featuring sculptures of many of the Zoo’s most popular animals, including giant pandas, Asian elephants, gibbons, a sea lion, an octopus, and a Komodo dragon. Visitors at ZooLights

will enjoy winter-themed crafts, ice sculpting demonstrations, choral groups, and storytellers. ZooLights runs from November 27th to January 1st (closed December 24th, 25th and 31st.) from 5 to 9 PM. ZooLights is free. Visit nationalzoo.si.edu for details.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL AT FORD’S THEATRE—A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens will run from November 19th to December 31st at the iconic DC theater. This must-see holiday tradition includes the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future as they lead the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge on a journey of transformation and redemption. Originally conceived by Michael Baron, this music-infused production captures the magic and joy of Dickens’s Yuletide classic. Acclaimed Washington stage actor Edward Gero returns to play Scrooge. Go to fords.org/event/christmas-carol for tickets.

Before the weather turns cold, you might think about renting a garage space. There are a few spaces available right now and your back may thank you this winter! The price for an interior garage space is $190 per month. The lease is month-to-month with a 30-day to notice to vacate.

If you are in the outside spaces and thinking about moving inside, this is the time to take action. Come spring (providing there are outdoor spots open), you can transfer back outside. But be warned, you may be spoiled by missing rain, snow, sleet and cold!

Before the holidays, it’s also a good time to remind residents that daily guest rentals in the garage or outside can be rented for guests (or if you rent a car) for just $10 a day. Check with the leasing office for availability; spaces are limited for daily rentals.

Garage Spaces Available!

Over the years Calvert House residents have proven that they are both great supporters of their community and that they love pie! That’s why this year, Calvert House joined with Food and Friends’ “Slice of Life” pie selling

fundraiser.Food and Friends’ is a great local organization that makes

and delivers nutritious meals or groceries for those who are not able to do for themselves, due to cancer, HIV or other illness. One pie provides a person in need food for a day. The Slice of Life pie sale is one of their biggest drives of the year, and your pie is 100% tax deductible. For more information on the organization contact www.foodandfriends.org.

Look for posted notices or flyers at the front desk for prices and more information on how to purchase your pies. Pies will be delivered to the CVS on the corner of Connecticut Avenue and Calvert Street in Woodley Park on November 24th for residents to pick up in time for the holiday. For more information or to purchase pies, go to www.foodandfriends.org/pie and look for Community Realty Company or Laura Berney.
