PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES

November 14th through the 18th, teachers will be hosting Parent Teacher Conferences and handing out student report cards for the first trimester. Students will have a different schedule this week. Early /late kinders will attend 8:15-12:11 and 1st-5th grades 8:30-12:40. The key to a successful conference is two-way communication. By exchanging information, parents and teachers can set the stage for a great school year for our students. Your child’s teacher will be prepared to discuss grade level standards, samples of your child’s class work and details concerning the report card. In addition, you will learn what is expected for homework, classroom behavior, and ways you can help support the educational process at home. You can also help your child’s teacher by being prepared to discuss the general areas of your child's health, sleep habits, special interests, problems, and reactions to school, plus any other information which only you have, but which could help with his/her education. We hope these conferences will be very productive!

Fall 2016 Book Fair Results Junction's Fall Book Fair was a huge success with a grand total of $10,778 in sales

and 106 books purchased for our teacher's classrooms!

We were able to raise $425.57 through our All For Books campaign, and 100% of the money was used to purchase more books for Junction's library.

Congratulations to Mrs. Haydu's class for raising the most money in the

All For Books classroom competition!

A huge thank you to all of the parents who volunteered their time and helped to make the fair such a success.

Thank you to all who attended the book fair and we hope to see you in the spring!

Influenza, commonly known as " the flu," is a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract. It affects all age groups, though kids tend to get it more often than adults. Symptoms include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle aches, headache, and fatigue. The flu can last 1-2 weeks. Prevention: Avoid exposure to the virus with good handwashing! Keep your hands away from nose, eyes, mouth, and avoid crowds as much as possible. Keep up resistance to infection with good diet, rest, and exercise. The flu shot is another way to help keep the flu out of your household. The vaccine helps protect people from the flu viruses that experts think will be most common in the upcoming flu season. While the vaccine doesn't completely guarantee against getting sick, someone who's been vaccinated and still gets the flu will generally have fewer and milder symptoms. Treatment: Plenty of rest, drink extra fluids to prevent dehydration, take acetaminophen or ibuprofen (no aspirin for children and teens). Kids who are sick should stay home from school and childcare until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicine.

November Nurse’s Notes

November usually brings thoughts of autumn leaves, Thanksgiving, and, in health care circles, the flu. Here are a few quick facts to help you manage this year.

2017 GATE Identification The 2017-2018 school year GATE identification test will be administered at the District Office for students currently in 2nd-7th grade. The students will take the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test, OLSAT, that tests abstract thinking and rea-soning ability. Students must attend one of the testing dates on the OLSAT Parent Permission Form in order to complete the testing by the district. The Parent Permission Forms will be made available on November 14, 2016 on our district website @ www.rcsdk8.org under the “Parent” tab. All forms must be returned to the District Of-fice by January 6, 2017 if you would like your student tested. There are no exceptions as materials are ordered based on the number of returned forms. Make sure you check the district website under the “Parents” tab for more information regarding GATE services and testing.

What is GATE?

Gifted and Talented Education, otherwise known as the GATE program, provides differentiated cur-riculum and instructional services to students who are identified as having abilities and/or potential for high performance.

The mission of the Roseville City School District’s Gifted and Talented Education Program is to iden-tify and serve identified gifted students from all represented groups in the District. Through highly motivating self-contained classrooms and appropriate placement in classroom clusters, we provide instruction rich in learning opportunities based on grade level standards extended by depth, com-plexity and acceleration. It is the goal of this program to provide all students we serve with the tools necessary to reach their full academic and personal potential.

How are students identified as GATE? Roseville City School District’s GATE identification process is based on multiple criteria which con-sider measures of academic achievement and potential. It is designed to provide an equitable basis for entry into the GATE program for all students. In third grade, all students are administered the Otis–Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT). The OLSAT measures verbal comprehension, verbal rea-soning, pictorial reasoning, figural reasoning, and quantitative reasoning and is used as one meas-urement to assess student GATE candidacy. Other measures also influence student identification and have been selected for inclusion into the GATE Identification Matrix:

· Student Assessment Scores

· Teacher Input

· Parent Input

What services to GATE students receive?

Students receiving GATE services are provided a differentiated curriculum that may include exten-sion activities, advanced literature review, independent investigations, enrichment support, and pro-ject development. Multiple opportunities are provided for acceleration, depth, and complexity in the core subject areas.

Junction is proud to announce the return of The Fratello Marionettes! This production showcases the high kicking antics of the Russian Trepak Dancers, graceful ice skater, Crystal Chandelier, and features the dazzling acrobatic penguins. The fundraisers and your donations to our PTC helped to fund this amazing assembly!

The Fratello Marionettes began entertaining audiences in 1989. The Performance Company has brought the ancient art of marionettes to people throughout the United States. The Fratello Marionettes produce high quality marionette shows using the cabaret style of manipulation. The shows are filled with wonderful marionettes that range in size from one foot to three feet tall! In addition to sophisticated trick marionette numbers, a performance may include singers, dancers, trained dogs, clowns, and a hula dancing grandma!
