As we look to the year ahead with hope that our nation will see a better economic climate, I want to take a moment to thank you for your unwavering support during 2009. As a credit union, Capital Communications did feel the effects of the faltering economy, but prudent lending practices and sound business decisions protected us from the hits that other fi nancial institutions felt. We remained, as always, focused on protecting your assets and on helping you through the diffi cult year ahead. During 2009, we performed hundreds of Financial Checkups, saving many members money each month and, in some cases, years off their loans. It only takes fi ve minutes to review your fi nancial picture to make sure you have the right products to suit your needs. We asked you to look to us fi rst for help with your fi nances before you were in a position that was more diffi cult to correct – and you did. Along with our Five-Minute Financial Checkups, we rolled out new products to help you keep your fi nances on track including FinanceWorks (see Page 6) and an online debt management tool that can be found in our Resource Center (visit capcomfcu.org and click on “Personal,” then “Resource Center.”) We also created iSaveSM to help members set up customized online savings plans. We continue to help you fi ght fraud and identity theft by keeping you well informed of the myriad criminal attempts. See Page 6 to learn how to reduce access to your personal account information and watch for the latest “Security Alerts” on our home page.

Also in this issue, you’ll fi nd a special insert that lets you know all the ways you can conduct your banking from home with convenience and ease. As we wait to see how the upcoming fl u season will take its toll, we thought it was important to make sure you could keep this information with your important papers. If you haven’t already tried some of the convenience services we offer within our secure home banking platform (Connect-24), I encourage you to fi nd out for yourself how easy your banking can be online. Watch for more information about my favorite new convenience feature to be unveiled soon. We’ll add a voice command feature to our Touch-24 automated phone teller that will make it much easier to access your account information over the phone. We have worked hard at earning your trust and, no matter what lies ahead in 2010, we will continue to maintain the highest level of integrity. We understand how critically important it is for you to bank with someone you trust and we will not take that privilege for granted. I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season and a healthy and prosperous New Year. Please let us know how we can help you in the year ahead.

Sincerely,

Paula A. StoperaPresident/CEO

A common mistake people make when buying a car is shopping only for the cars that fall into a specifi c desired monthly payment range. Many advertisements talk about low payments and a car salesperson will certainly ask what monthly payment you would like. The object of these ads and sales tactics is to turn your attention from the price of the car and, instead, onto an affordable monthly payment. If you keep your focus on the price of the car, the odds are you will end up with an even lower payment than the one that is advertised – especially when you

are considering a lease. Leasing can be a complicated transaction and it gets more complex when you are trading in a car on a lease. The good news is that, as a Credit Union member, you have Car Buyers Helpline available to help you decide the best course for you. Car Buyers Helpline can help you fi nd the vehicle of your choice, negotiate the lowest possible price and help you get a better value for your trade. Let us take the confusion and hassle out of buying a new or used car. Call (518) 383-8924 or (800) 836-4333.

Identity thieves prey on unsuspecting victims, especially during the busy shopping season, when you are less likely to notice unusual activity. Here are some ways you can protect yourself:• Do not carry extra credit cards, debit cards, your Social Security card, birth certifi cate or passport in your wallet or purse, except when needed. Always store your wallet in a safe place. • To reduce the amount of personal information that is “out there” remove your name from the marketing lists of the credit reporting bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Call (888) 5OPTOUT or visit optoutprescreen.com. • Sign up for the Federal Trade Commission’s National Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov or at (888) 382-1222. For more information about this registry, visit donotcall.gov/faq/ faqdefault.aspx.

• Sign up for the Direct Marketing Association’s Mail Preference Service at PO Box 643, Carmel, NY 10512 (include $1 check or money order.) You can also opt out online at dmachoice. org/dma/member/regist.action. A credit card is required for verifi cation only; there is no fee for opting out online. • Have your name and address removed from the phone book and reverse directories.

Use Connect-24 to monitor your account activity during the holidays even when the Credit Union is closed. And, if you suspect you have been a victim of fraud, do not hesitate to give us a call at (518) 458-2195 or (800) 468-5500.

Less is more and, during the holidays, it truly is the thought that counts. Talk with family members about setting a price limit on gifts this year or drawing names from a hat so that each person is responsible for buying one gift. If your budget is full of expensive decorations, entertainment and food, choose a few traditions that are important to you and try to cut back where you can. Make movie or game night special or suggest a potluck family dinner instead of going to a restaurant. You might even fi nd your holidays are a little less hectic this year.

Plan now for next year. If you don’t already have one, set up a Holiday or Savings Club at Capital Communications. Open your club now for the 2010 holidays so that you’ll have a full year to save. Then, use direct deposit or set up a scheduled transfer so a portion of each paycheck is automatically deposited into the account. You’ll be less likely to spend it on something else and even a little bit adds up. Without factoring in dividends, setting aside $20 each week will add up to more than $1,000 over the course of a year.

Holidayson a budget

If you’re wondering where you are going to fi nd the money to pay for the upcoming holiday season, you’re not alone. A diffi cult economy might still be giving you something to consider as the dollar signs add up in your life. The holiday season is what you make of it and we have some tips to help you through.

Set a budget and stick to it. Determine now what you can reasonably afford this year and give yourself a guideline for spending. Then, make sure you don’t overspend. Load the money you have to spend for the holidays on a VISA® Gift Card so that it’s a little bit harder to spend beyond your budget – when the money on your gift card is gone, it’s gone.

Make a list of the people you need to buy gifts for and be sure to include everyone. Add a gift idea for each recipient that’s within your budgeted price range. Not only will this save you time when you are shopping, but it will help you avoid buying something on impulse that might be more expensive. If you make your list early enough, you can divide your shopping into chunks and do it a little at a time or split it up among members of your family for added effi ciency.

Shop early so you can take advantage of pre-holiday prices and sales. Take advantage of the many discounts available when you use your Credit Union VISA Credit or Debit Card online. Just visit capcomfcu.org and click on “Personal” then “Lending” and “Credit Cards,” to fi nd the link to the discounts that are available to you. Don’t forget, you earn rewards for purchases on both your Capital Communications VISA Platinum Credit Card and your VISA Debit Card.

Making strides … to the Max!The Credit Union and its Foundation have walked in support of the American Cancer Society for the past 16 years, raising more than $500,000 to support breast cancer research and awareness. Thank you to the hundreds of walkers who joined our team again this year to help us raise money for this cause. Over the past six years, the Capital Communications Cares Foundation has given thousands of plush keepsakes to cancer survivors at the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. The keepsake animals have been named for the character traits it takes to be a survivor. This year, “Max” the moose made his debut, reminding survivors to live life ‘to the max’ and surround themselves with supportive family and friends. Max joins Courage, Hope, Perseverance, Faith and Moxie – these are our wishes for those whose lives have been touched by cancer.

Teacher’s aidFive teachers at area schools have received a gift from the Capital Communications Cares Foundation that will help support their students all year long through the ”Capital Communications Cares for Classrooms” program. Above, Sarah Conboy of Craig Elementary School in Niskayuna is one of the teachers to receive money from the Foundation. The program, designed to support teachers who are promoting teamwork and community service in their classrooms, also donated one $250 VISA Gift Card each to Dena Saburro at Eagle Elementary School in Glenmont, Morgan Hytko at Van Schaick Elementary School in Cohoes, Tina Cascone at The Thomas O’Brien Academy of Science and Technology in Albany and Stephanie Dash at the Doyle Middle School in Troy.

2010Calendar of Dreams

Thank you for helping us giveWith your help, the Capital Communications Cares Foundation has been making holidays brighter for families in need since 2003. Since our inception, we’ve fed more than 1,000 families with a complete, healthy Thanksgiving meal with all the fi xings. More than 1,000 children have received warm winter coats as well as a visit from Santa and a holiday gift. Hundreds of homeless families have received decorations to help brighten their temporary home at the shelter during the holidays. The Foundation is once again preparing for a busy holiday season, assembling Thanksgiving baskets, wrapping gifts for children and talking with Santa. We will partner with several organizations to help create a little holiday magic: The City of Cohoes, St. Catherine’s Center for Children, Marillac Family Shelter, the Commission on Economic Opportunity Stepping Stones I School in Lansingburgh, Visiting Nurses Association, St. Paul’s Center for Women and Children and Albany Head Start. During December, Capital Communications will be a drop location for the Albany Police Athletic League’s Annual Toy Drive for Capital Region families in need. Watch for more information and for drop boxes in each of our branch locations.
