Greetings,

Wow! What a month it has been. The Lodge has picked up in activities & events.

Things are going exceptionally well. The Birthday Bash in the beginning of

October got us off to a good start and, as usual, was successful. Also in October,

we had the privilege of the State President’s visitation which went well. At the

same time was the OktoberFest, the food was excellent, thank you Vic Guimond. The entertainment,

the Nikki Hunt Band, was exceptional, one of the better bands we have had here at the Lodge. Of

course, we had the Soccer Shoot-out sponsored by the State Elks so there were many young people

around. We had the very first Sports & Gun Show put on by Greg Ruby. Thank you Greg for another

creative way to help the Lodge.

Also, the Lodge cooked & served a meal for veterans at the Stand-Down at Togus. We fed over 200

people and distributed lunches to all the homeless vets that attended. I got the privilege of being at

this event, representing the Elks and thanking each veteran for their service to our Country. It is

something that every member of this Lodge should volunteer or donate to, at least once . It was very,

very worthwhile to recognize the service of our vets including the unfortunate ones who are homeless.

At the conclusion of this month, we will have a Halloween Party coming up on the 31st along with the

Scholarship Early Bird Holiday Fair. Please participate in these events, your support is important.

Remember the money that is raised during the Holiday Fair is for the Scholarship Fund and the

Halloween Party is offered as enjoyment for our members.

As we head into the Fall & Winter months, the Lodge is going to try to attempt to have some type of

event or entertainment every Friday. We are in the process of getting the schedule together so if you

have an idea or suggestion or a small function that you would like to put on, propose it to the House

Committee who meets the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of every month at 6:00 p.m. Remember these events

don’t have to be large functions, just something for a few hours. We are willing to try anything new

here at the Lodge so that members can come & enjoy themselves on a Friday night. Also don’t be

afraid to step up and lend a hand to make Friday Nights events successful.

Coming in November, we are going to have a Friday Night supper on the 13th. Also our Annual

Turkey Raffle will be held on the 22nd. Don’t forget to buy your All-Nighter Tickets. This is always

a great annual event & everyone has a great time.

Lots of good things are happening at the Lodge. Make sure to drop buy and check them out. I want

to personally thank all the volunteers for helping with the above mentioned events. It’s volunteers

that keep this Lodge running. Stay warm and let’s hope the snow stays away for a little bit longer.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving,

Congratulations to

Greg Ruby

October’s Elk of the Month

Greg Ruby is my choice for Elk of the Month. Greg has been very active this year. He ran a

Calendar Raffle which raised money for the Lodge. He offered a new event, the Elks Sports &

Gun Show which ran for 2 days. Anyone who has run a new event knows how much time &

effort goes into making sure all the details are covered. Greg also helped repair the lights in

the parking lot and did a lot of the background work at the Summer Music Festival. He has

donated many, many hours to functions at the Lodge and he is presently a member of the

House Committee. Greg has been instrumental in raising funds, being actively involved and is

always looking for ways to raise more funds, including bringing back Sunday Football in the

Sports Lounge. If you see Greg at the Lodge, be sure to congratulate him on all his efforts for

the Augusta Elks Lodge.

OKTOBERFEST FOR VETERANS On Saturday, October 10th, four members of the Augusta Elks took part in the annual OkterberFest at Togus.

The event included playing Bingo with the patients and delivering snacks and prizes.

Members of the Augusta Elks were Lori Howlett ,Maria Hassen ,Heather Marble and David Hassen.

Playing cards from the Grand Lodge program

were handed out in the ward and a supply of

cards were given to the Recreation Therapist for

distribution

as needed.

Respectfully submitted,

David Hassen

LIFE MEMBERSHIP

Have you considered a life membership at the Lodge? The Augusta Lodge #964 by-laws

(page 3, Article 3; Life Membership, Section 1) provides members with the chance to buy a

lifetime membership, regardless of how long they have been an Elk member. The bylaws

state: “The lodge, by an affirmative secret ballot of two-thirds of those present at a regular

Lodge meeting, may elect a member in good standing to Life Membership upon the payment,

in advance, of $1,500.00”

Life members only pay $28 (subject to fluctuate each year, determined by the State &

National Elks Association).

If you are interested, contact the Lodge Secretary, Cindy Gervais at 623-9623 or

[email protected]. Please note, that this process can take at least 2 months to

complete.

PLEASE REMEMBER . . . Drama is for the stage, please keep it out of the lodge.

Basket Raffle Update

The Augusta Lodge’s PER Association is raising money for a much

needed water softener for the kitchen through basket raffles and

donations from our generous members. Basket Raffle Tickets can

be purchased or donations can be left at the bar. All members will

benefit. Thank you for your help and participation.

News from the Scholarship Committee

The Scholarship Committee welcomes Eileen Broberg to the 2016 committee. We are excited to have Eileen join our team

and we encourage other members that may have an interest in the Scholarship Program to get involved.

Our committee meets, quarterly and runs functions to raise funds to support the scholarship program on the local level, we

score and judge the ENF [MVS] scholarships and forward up to 6 high school seniors on to the district level of judging. We

also receive, score and award scholarships on the local level and honor the recipients at an Awards Banquet in May at our

lodge.

ENF would like us to engage ENF Legacy Award Winners in activities throughout the year to promote community service

and Elkdom. Do you have an upcoming event, need an extra hand, call Lina to see if there is student availability.

Have a fundraiser idea or thought, share it with a committee member and let's bring it to life!

SPORTS LOUNGE & BAR

A lot of members have been asking when the bar in the Sports Lounge would be

open again. Just as many members have been asking why are we opening the bar in the Sports Lounge again.

To address these questions, a Downstairs Committee has been formed to develop a short range & long range

plan to open the bar downstairs. The committee has been working very hard to reopen the downstairs at no

cost to the lodge. They are doing so by raising funds through raffles and functions. All funds raised are split

50/50, 50% is placed in the Lodge Building Fund for repairs to the Lodge & the other 50% is used to make

improvements to the bar.

The Committee will continue to offer raffles & hold functions by having Sports on the big screens & offering

food on Sundays & having Friday night entertainment. The Committee believes the downstairs can flourish

once again as it has in the past and give our members an old destination made new again. These events will be

on a temporary basis until it is voted on, on November 10th Meeting.

John Heyword's proverb:

NOTHING VENTURED, NOTHING GAINED.

If we are unwilling to strive forward, we will never prosper.

If you have any questions, please feel free

to contact the Downstairs Committee Chair, Greg Ruby.
