October Italian Heritage Month Kick-off Event

Dear Sisters and Brothers;Kathy and I would l ike

to welcome to Boston our new Consul General of Italy Giuseppe Pastorelli, and his lovely wife Lilla and their three-month-old son Andrea Richard. We look forward to working together with the Consul Gen-eral in the Italian American Community.

On September 19, we held our annual Bocce Tournament at the Watertown Lodge; the men’s champs of 2009 from Watertown got knocked off, as another team from Watertown is our new State Champs for 2010. In the Ladies Division the Watertown Ladies knocked of the 2009 champs from the Natick Lodge. The Junior Divi-sion Champs from Wilmington won again.

Thanks to brothers Angelo Rossi Chairman of C&E Trust and Anthony Panaggio Jr. for the great work done at our annual Walk-a-thon, at Break-heart Reservation in Saugus. It is through their great effort that our Scholarship program can continue. Thank you Brothers Angelo and Anthony.

On October 1st the Kick Off for Italian Heritage Month was once again on full display at the State House, a large crowd assembled to get the month of October as Italian Heritage Month underway. A thank you

goes out to Brother Kevin Caira, the President of the October Heritage Committee, for all the great work that is done by that committee. Also thanks to the founders of October Heritage Month, Judge Joseph Fer-rino, Judge Agnes, Dr. Stephen Mayo, and of course Mr. Emeri-tus for the Italian Community Mr. Lino Rullo.

On October 3rd, the First La-dies Reception was held at the Crestview in Woburn. Kathy was elated to see the members who attended have such a great time. It was absolutely a beau-tiful afternoon and Kathy and I would like to thank all those who attended.

We all know that the lifeline of our organization is member-ship, and Brother Tony Sistito as chairman of Membership, put together five great Open Houses in each district. The response for a fi rst time event like this was good, but I’m sure next year’s will be even better. Each lodge where the event was held put out a great meal, and prospective members enjoyed the presentation and natu-rally the delicious Italian food. Thanks to Brother Tony and his Membership Committee.

Our Italian pride was out in full bloom on October 10th for our Columbus Day Parade, held in East Boston. The parade was lead by the Renaissance

Lodge’s 80 antique cars, thanks to Brother Dean Saluti and his Auto Club for the great turnout to help support the Order Sons of Italy. The number of march-ers this year was a little disap-pointing. Division 2, which is the Sons of Italy division, was a bit light this year. Thanks to all those who brought fl oats or low bed trucks, bands and the marchers who all had a great time. It’s just too bad more Brothers and Sisters didn’t enjoy the great experience.

Our annul Mass for our de-parted members was held in Worcester this year, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel church. The beautiful church held about 150 members who enjoyed the mass and the wonderful Homily given by Monsignor Rocco. After the celebration of mass we all had a fantastic breakfast, thanks to Sisters Kathy Bourassa and Carol Rossi for putting together a beautiful day.

The Sports Committee put on a great day of cribbage at the Quincy Lodge. Fifty members came to show off their cribbage skills, a great day was had by all, and a thank you goes out to Sister Michelle Bertoldi and Sister Donna Baker along with their committee for putting together a great meal. Brother Steve DeAngelis is already ex-

Initiatives, Plans, Goals: My fi rst plan/goal is to visit lodges meeting offi cers and members and listen to their needs and concerns and to let them know that the Council is here to serve them. I am also hopeful to attend as many Lodge functions as possible. Another way I want to show that our Council is concerned for each member is to extend my role as “Madame Lady Sunshine” by sending remembrances from the Council to any Lodge member who has an extended serious illness or is in need of a word of condolence for the loss of a loved one.OSIA’s Greatest Strength: It is my belief that our greatest strength is our heritage and the pride that we have in that heritage. We must keep this alive. OSIA Could Improve: The membership in our Order is declining and on this we must improve. We must pass this pride in our heritage on to our children and our children’s children. How Can We Do Th at: We must change our focus to embrace these generations and revive within them the same pride we have in our heritage. We must sponsor/promote events that will be of interest to their generation while at the same time keeping our heritage alive and vibrant. We must make their membership in our Order meaningful to them. Advice to Lodge Presidents: One of the principles upon which our Order is based is “Fraternity” which I believe is essential if we are to grow. Each one of us is different but we all share the same pride in our heritage. Each of us has our own unique talents and abilities to offer; yet we are all a part of a rich legacy. We may not all have the same opinion as to the pattern of the line up; however, we are all Italian at the core. If we do not pull our weight in the line-up or there is discord, the end result will be affected. We are all important to our lodges and to the survival of OSIA as an organization. We must be united in the lineup and work together in “Fraternity” for the organization to grow and reach out to our younger generations.

Meet RICHARD SACCA, State Trustee-at-Large

The new Consul General of Italy in Boston Giuseppe Pas-torelli, his wife and three month old son arrived in Boston a few days ago. Upon arrival he quickly noted how beautiful Boston is and commented on the beautiful weather. Appar-ently he was warned of the harsh New England winters and was encouraged to bring a heavy winter coat and much more importantly he was told to never wear a Yankees cap. With this sound advice he was ready to go!

I met with Giuseppe at the Consul General Offi ces located on Atlantic Avenue overlooking a spectacular view of Boston. From his new offi ce, the Consul General of Italy Boston, Pas-torelli, remarked on the beauty of our city. “This is my first time in Boston. Although I have been to other cities such as Washington, D.C., Miami, New York, and San Francisco, I am overwhelmed by the beauty of this great city that I would like to call a “small big city.”

He remarked that “Boston so far, has been nothing but welcoming in every aspect.” On his immediate arrival at Logan Airport he said with laugh that he didn’t feel like “a foreigner.” As he is starting to meet members of the Italian community he notes that even walking through parts of Boston he feels a sense of familiarity and friendship. Being appointed as Consul General of Italy in Boston, Pastorellli at the young age of 37 took this position and moved here with his wife Lilla and three month old son Andrea Richard.

In 1997 he entered the For-eign Ministry in Rome and spent approximately three years working from the Rome offi ce. In 2000 he was sent to Turkey as head of the Commercial section of the Embassy. He oversaw trade between Italy and Tur-key and assisted in the billion dollar growth that took place there. He was later appointed to the Embassy in Budapset as Deputy Head of Mission. It was during his appointment in Hun-gary that he met his lovely wife who incidentally also worked at the Embassy. She was born in Hungary but studied Italian. Their business relationship soon turned into personal and

they wed on March 12, 2008. As husband and wife they moved to Rome at the end of his ten-ure and Lilla began working in an Italian law fi rm and she also worked for a short time in the Hungarian Embassy to the Vatican. Meanwhile, Pastorelli worked at the Foreign Ministry handling the Eastern African department where he worked closely with the United States Embassy throughout those years.

Pastorelli was then given the option to take on another overseas position or remain working in Rome. The couple decided that it would be a great opportunity to move to Boston with their child and experience the United States.

It had always been a dream for Pastorelli to work in the States, in fact as he applied for his next posting, Boston was his fi rst choice and fortunately he got it. “This new position is a fi rst for me in many ways. It’s my fi rst consular position. I’ve always worked in the Embassy and Ministries and it has been a personal goal of mine to work in the Consular division. This position is brand new for me as I oversee the entire staff that serves over 15,000 registered Italians in the New England area. I also take on this posi-tion with a family which is very comforting to me.”

When asked what he would like to see happen at the Con-sulate of Italy, Boston under his leadership he said, “I want to continue the excellent work from my predecessors by keep-ing the Consul General Offi ce open to everyone. We must be close to the people. I would like for the people of Boston to know that the Consul General offi ce is not just an institution you visit when seeking visas and passports. Some of my goals are to streamline Italian talents, promote culture, and economic events, to increase the instruction of Italian lan-guage to adults and specifi cally children, to educate and inform non-Italians who are interested in Italy. But most of all I want to join the Italian community together and other communities as a whole.

He emphasized the excellence he feels in Boston; the cul-ture, institutions, educational facilities, entertainment and sports.

He will get the opportunity to do this and more as 2011 will mark the 150th Anniversary of the unifi cation of Italy. “I will work on this celebration with the help of the Italian com-munity to celebrate our history and present it to the American people.” He is looking forward to meeting everyone and is eager to begin his position as Consul General of Italy, Boston. For now he will continue to famil-iarize himself with Boston “I will enjoy the remaining days of autumn before I have to pull out my winter coat”, he laughed. Pastorelli missed baseball sea-son and now has more than enough time to purchase his Red Sox cap.

On Thursday, September 16, 2010, a fundraiser for the Walk-a-thon was held at Shooters Bar and Grill at 355 Ferry Street, Everett, Massachusetts. Immediate Past President Florence Ferullo Kane and Sibby Birritteri of the Lt. Alexander Santilli Lodge #2852 of Everett collaborated to make this fundraiser a success.

The success of the annual Walk-a-thon is necessary, as the funds raised from the event are used to support our annual schol-arships. There were members in attendance from the Belmont Mixed Lodge, Piave Fiume and Cornelia dei Gracchi Lodges of Water-town, Angelo Giuseppi Roncalli Lodge of Wilmington, Granite State Lodge of Roch-ester, N.H., Lt. Alexander Santilli Lodge of Everett, Braintree Ladies Lodge, Winchester Ladies Lodge, Medford Lodge, Figli D’Italia Lodge of Saugus, and the Winthrop Mixed Lodge.

A delicious buffet was served consisting of two different types of pasta: chicken, broccoli and ziti and bow ties with a tangy marinara sauce, sausages, peppers, onions

Sister Kane welcomed and thanked every-one for supporting the Walk-a-thon Fund-raiser. She then introduced Walk-a-thon Chairman Anthony J. Panaggio, Jr., who spoke on the upcoming Walk-a-thon and its importance. He reminded all that it was to be held on Sunday, September 26, 2010 at the Breakheart Reservation in Saugus, Mas-sachusetts. Brother Panaggio also thanked Sibby Birriteri for hosting the event at his restaurant. He encouraged members to get the pledges out and advertise the need for walkers.

State President James DiStefano was in-troduced and he reiterated the need for this Walk-a-thon to be a success. He thanked everyone who attended the fundraiser and Sister Kane for her support.

Before the evening came to a close there was a raffl e of items donated by members in attendance, and it was evident that the evening was a great success.

purple printing. They carried the names of members and businesses that donated to the fundraiser, and were distrib-uted to all of the participating walkers.

Special thanks were given to our chefs from the Newton Men’s Lodge, Stephen Cedrone, Savio Cedrone and Robert Luchetti. They did a fantastic job feeding our hungry walkers upon their return.

T h i s y e a r t h e p r i z e s were awarded as fol lows: the f i rst walker to f inish was Kristen Faelica, and the first junior walker to finish was David Caira. The individ-ual who brought in the most money was Immediate Past President Florence Ferullo Kane, and the Lodge that brought in the most money was the Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli Lodge #2183 (Wilmington).

Charitable and Educational Trust Chairman Angelo Rossi and State President James DiStefano gave a special gift to each winner.

Chairman Anthony Panaggio, Jr., thanked his committee who helped to make this Walk-a-thon a success.

As we all know, the Walk-a-thon is held as a fundraiser for our perpetual scholarship fund, so that we may continue to support our students as they pursue their goals of higher education each year. Keeping all this in mind, let us all make a special effort to participate in the Walk-a-thon in the year 2011.

Before the day came to an end State President James DiStefano reappointed Anthony J. Panaggio, Jr. to be the 2011 Chairman for the Walk-a-Thon.

The annual Columbus Day Parade was held on Sunday, October 10, 2010 in East Boston. The parade assembled behind the Grandstand in the Suffolk Downs Parking Lot at 11:00 A.M., and the parade commenced at 1:00 P.M. The Sons of Italy contingent was in the 3rd Division.

Our photographer Domenic Campochiaro captured many interesting photos of this parade and we will let the pictures tell the story, as pictures are worth a thousand words.

Sports Commis-sion Chairman Steve DeAngelis and his committee of Francis Cedrone, Steve Cedrone and Loreto Pellegrini announced the rules to over fourteen teams. and Educational Trust Chair-man Angelo Rossi gave the second reading. The Offertory Procession was lead by State President and First Lady James and Kathy DiStefano, State Second Vice President Antonio Sestito and State Financial Secretary Cathy Bourassa. Eucharistic Ministers Helen Aromando, Mary Ann Bello, Donna M. Giuliani and Maria Sciannameo were from Worces-ter Lodge #168, as were the ushers. Frank Goyette directed the music.

After the Mass a delicious brunch, catered by the Gar-den Fresh Courthouse Café of Worcester, was served by Angelo Rossi, Carol Rossi and Cathy Bourassa at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Recre-ation Hall.

The Mass was well attended, and I would encourage mem-bers to attend in the future. The Church, Monsignor Rocco Piccolomini and the Worcester Lodge members made this a very special day for all. We congratu-late co-chairmen State Finan-cial Secretary Cathy Bourassa and State Trustee-at-Large Carol Rossi for making this 21st

Annual Memorial Mass such a success.

A special note: Never let it be said that Italians run out of food! Carol Rossi and Angelo Rossi donated the leftover food to veterans at a homeless shel-ter not far from the church, who were overjoyed with the special treat.

Dear Brothers & Sisters:As an appointed commissioner of the Benefi t Insurance Commission, I recognize the need to provide additional benefi ts to our

members while looking for ways to generate income for the Grand Lodge. I have been spending the past few months designing a program that I believe has value for all Sons of Italy Members.

It is therefore with great pleasure that I am announcing an insurance program designed to provide savings directly to you on your auto and home insurance while generating income for our beloved Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.

The program operates like a Cooperative. When we all buy together we benefi t directly through special discounts and the Grand Lodge benefi ts through increased revenue.

Participation in the program does not require any extra effort on your part. The Grand Lodge Auto and Home Program functions this way:

1. You contact Ross Zagami – Benefi t Insurance Commissioner 2. I provide you with a quote3. You receive savings 4. The Grand Lodge receives a marketing fee for every policy that is writtenWe all know how challenging it is for the Grand Lodge to meet its fi nancial obligations locally as well as nationally. Every dollar

counts. You will see that the Grand Lodge Auto and Home Program can help meet this challenge by generating meaningful income for our Grand Lodge.

GETTING STARTED IS EASYTo start helping yourself and the Grand Lodge call for a no obligation quote:Ross Zagami 617-484-4466 (phone) 617-484-4467 (fax)Keep in mind that a large percentage of Massachusetts auto insurance policies renew in January.

Peel and chop onion and celery. Place cooking oil, onion and celery in skillet to simmer slowly until onion is opaque. Add capers including some of the liquid from bottle and stir. Simmer slowly. Add chopped fresh tomatoes, cover and simmer a few minutes. Add bay leaf (optional). If used, be sure to remove bay leaf before serving meal. Allow ingredients to cook about ten minutes being careful not to dry them out.

Peel, wash and cut potatoes into two-inch wedges. Add to skillet. Spoon some tomato sauce from skillet over potatoes. Cover and simmer slowly, about ten to twelve minutes. Rinse cod loins. Cut into four-inch pieces before adding to skillet. Add water if needed to extend sauce. Spoon some sauce over the cod pieces. Cover and cook slowly. When fi sh and potatoes is fork tender, add wine and bring to slow boil. Cover and remove from burner. Reheat slowly for serving.

NOTE: During the mid-eighteen hundreds, my ancestors in Sicily prepared this as a special Christmas Eve meal. My parents and relatives continued the tradition in this country. Two or three days before preparing this recipe, the dried pesci stocco (which I believe to be dried cured haddock) was soaked in water. The water was changed daily to remove the salt. However, the briny taste remained. This was not a popular meal with many young children because of the strong unpleasant aroma while the fi sh cooked. But eventually it became a favorite meal served with fresh bread.

Since dried salted haddock is diffi cult to fi nd today, fresh or dried salted cod (baccala) can be used instead. When I prepare the meal now, I use fresh skinned cod loins, free of bones. This eliminates the unpleasant aroma of the preserved fi sh. To obtain the “old briny” taste, I add two small pieces of presoaked dried, cured baccala.

On Sunday, October 24, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. the Junior Division Commission hosted a Bocce Tournament in conjunction with the Wilmington Junior Lodge #3729 and the newly instituted Dr. Robert J. Calabrese Junior Lodge #2863 of Billerica to celebrate Italian Heritage Month.

Teams from both Junior Lodges competed in a series of Bocce matches throughout the afternoon and were treated to a barbeque of hotdogs and hamburgers at the completion of the matches.

The Juniors enjoyed the day and there were many friendships made between the two Ju-nior Lodges, so much so that they have decided to hold some joint activities together in the upcoming months.

On a beautiful New England fall Tuesday afternoon, mem-bers of the Winthrop Ladies Lodge gathered at the Winthrop Center Café to celebrate Italian Heritage Month in a social din-ner meeting setting.

Café owners Roger and his lovely wife Layla cooked up some great food and our wait-ress, Kim, greeted the ladies with her warm welcoming smile. The highlight of the afternoon’s meal was a spe-cial dessert called Pudim de Leite (caramel pudding) that Layla makes for her family and special occasions. This can be specially ordered, and the ladies agreed that it would be a delicious dish to bring to any holiday table. St. Peter’s Central Catholic Elementary School showed off their artistic talents as they drew and painted their depic-tions of Cristoforo Colombo and his ships: the Niña, Pinta and Santa Maria.

These art masterpieces were displayed in the Worcester Pub-lic Library’s children’s section. Also showcased for the Italian Heritage Month celebration

were prized possessions from members of Lodge #168, includ-ing traditional toys, ancient cookbooks, maps, photographs of Italian immigrants as they struggled to become part of their new home and society, photos of Italian families taking the oath as they became United States citizens, and of course the Italian Flag! In addition, there were many books that taught of and about our beloved Italy, her famous regions, food and drink, artists such as Michel-angelo and Leonardo da Vinci, musicians such as Giuseppe Verdi and Gioachino Rossini, vocalists like Luciano Pavarotti and Enrico Caruso, and books that introduced great cities like Rome, Naples and Venice and all their splendors.

Margaret Abboud spear-headed this great undertak-ing. Her countless efforts were greatly appreciated by all — especially the visitors to the Worcester Public Library who enjoyed and learned much about our beloved Italian heritage!
