Gratitude That Goes Soul Deep by Shawnelle Eliasen Nov 22, 2015 , Guidepost Magazine
Facebook gives me a "Today in the Past" post that hits me in a tender place. Six years ago on Thanksgiving Day, my post read:
2:00 a.m. Heard Isaiah’s voice over the baby monitor. “Mama. Mama, I here.” I didn’t mind a bit.
Sitting in my car, waiting for two of my boys to finish swim practice, I read this and my throat goes tight. I remember that night. I’d been out of town for a few days, and I missed my baby. He missed me too.
His plea pulled me from a deep sleep, but going to him was my pleasure. I climbed our curved, old stairs and entered his darkness. I lifted him from his crib and held him tight.
Together we went to the chair in the living room, the overstuffed rocker that held me while I held my babes. I pulled a soft blanket around us, and our hearts beat close. For a moment we seemed like one again. He drifted off to sleep after a short while, but I stayed awake and held him until morning colored the sky.
My son took comfort in my presence.
It’s the way I’m learning to call out to God.
You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever. (Psalm 16:11, NTL)
In this Psalm, David shares of the joy of God’s Presence. Oh, the sweet blessing of knowing that joy! It’s a Presence that penetrates any darkness. It brings hope to any circumstance. It is filling and completing and when we’re feeling alone, like my son in the night, His Presence offers comfort and peace.
Thanksgiving for His Presence is gratitude that goes soul deep.
Recognizing His nearness, His desire to be close me too, changes me. It changes the way that I think, feel and perceive life. This revelation overpowers my worries and fears. It reaches my anxious places. It brings security. It’s a truth that I claim. Crave. Need. It becomes as critical to me as breath.
The outflow of a heart that is keenly aware and deeply grateful for His Presence is peace, trust and joy.
There’s a rap at the window, and I look up to see a son’s sweet smile. A moment later the car fills with boyhood, chatter and the familiar scent of chlorine. And as I drive toward home, on to other things, I’m glad for that memory on Facebook.
It reminded me of holding a son. And it reminded me that I am held.

Our Outreach/Worship/Christian Ed Committees are planning the Christmas Eve meal for our HM3 pro-ject. It will be held just before our Christmas Eve service. We are going to need your assistance to make this a festive event for the community we serve. If you are able we can use donations of food: potatoes, side dishes, meat such as ham or turkey and any of your favorites to share. There will be a sign up sheet in the Narthex on November 20 so that we can plan on anything else we will need to prepare. The food donations should be delivered to the church kitchen on December 23rd (times will be noted on sign up sheet). We are also going to need help serving the food to the people and would enjoy your smile and assistance beginning around 4:00p. If you miss the sign up sheet contact Gail Garman (she’ll know what we may still need) by December 1.

Updates and Reminders
Rev. Keenan added a bit of uniqueness to our sermon on October 9. She played and sang a song that she had written as part of her message. She seems natu-rally equipped to put peo-ple at ease which is quite a gift. It generates an atmos-phere that seems to take away any worries and gives her words strength and a relaxed and accepting feel-ing.
SUNDAY FLOWER DEDICATIONS Did you know that if you would like to dedicate flowers used on the altar on Sunday's, you can place a note and envelope with the information in collection plate on Sunday for a future (Sunday) date? The 2 flower arrangements are made up and delivered to the Church by Hoffman's Flowers and cost $30.00 each week. If there are not any special dedications, the funds come from the churches expenses. If you are interested in helping the Deacon's out with Flower deliveries, please let
the Deacon's know.
Families Served at our HM3 (Hoge: Music, Message, Meal) for the month of September:

ACTS 2:38 An elderly woman had just returned to her home from an evening of religious service when she was startled by an intruder. As she caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables, she yelled, 'Stop -Acts 2:38!' (..turn from your sin...). The burglar stopped dead in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done. As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar, 'Why did you just stand there? All she did was yell a scripture to you.' 'Scripture?' replied the burglar, 'She said she had an AXE and two 38's!'
One of our three on-going major ministries is the Mt. Carmel Outreach Bus. The bus served a total of 40 people in the months of July (6), August (20) and September (14).

Martha Muses—Our October meeting was a refreshing and new beginning. Gail Garman took over as leader and Carol Ross as secretary. The bible lesson, given by Carolyn Colborn, was interesting and educational. We put together a table of refreshments from the kitchen. After the meeting we had conversation bringing many of us up to date on current happenings around the church and our church outreach projects. To date Prayer Shawls have been donated by Patti Gorman, Dorothy Aikens, Marinda Johnson and Joy Rector.

am grateful that we have been able to take care of these items and keep our building infrastructure healthy and

When our circle put together a cook book several years ago we got some recipes from other church groups. This is one of
those recipes. Jam Cake -CAKE: ½ pound butter, 4 whole eggs, 3 cups flour,1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon allspice, 1 tea-spoon soda, 2 cups sugar, 2 egg yolks, ½ teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon ground cloves, 1 cup buttermilk, 2 cups blackberry jam. - Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and yolks; beat until light. Sift flour with dry ingredients. Add flour mixture alter-nately with buttermilk; add jam. Bake in 3 greased and floured 8-inch pans for 35 minutes at 350 degrees. - ICING: 2 egg whites, ½ pound butter, 2 cups sugar, 1 cup evaporated milk. - Cook butter, sugar and milk to soft ball stage; pour slowly over stiffly beaten egg whites. Spread between layers and over cake. This recipe is over 100 years old.
It sounds like a nice idea for two of our ministries here at Hoge. It would be a nice thing for our guests at HM3 and our visitors to the food pantry.
