Requiem in Aeternam

“Eternal rest grant unto to them O Lord and

let perpetual light shine upon them.” These are the words from the entrance antiphon for the Mass for All the Faithful Departed, which is offered every November 2nd throughout the world.

From the very beginnings of Christianity, the church has prayed for her deceased members. Paintings found in the catacombs of Rome attest to the faith of those who prayed for the faithful departed.

Traditionally, the Body of Christ was spoken of in three groups: the Church Triumphant – The saints in Heaven who have received the crown of victory, enjoy the perfect peace of Christ and intercede for us the living; the Church Suffering or Penitent – refers to the faithful departed who although true to Christ died with venial sin and are experiencing the purification of divine love before entering into Heaven; lastly the Church Militant – we the living are the church still fighting for our own salvation and that of the whole world. The church militant seeks the intercession of the Triumphant and prays for those who are suffering in Purgatory. In this way, the Body of Christ shows itself not to be divided but one in Jesus.

Throughout the month of November, whenever the liturgical calendar permits, I will be offering the Mass for the Dead, remembering in a special way in my intentions all the departed whose names will be on the altar. I encourage you to pray a Rosary once a week in this month for the repose of the souls of the faithful departed. You can add the following prayers after each decade of the rosary: Eternal rest grant unto (name of your deceased) O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon Him or Her. May he/she rest in peace. Amen. And may the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace, Amen.

Steward Humility “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” - MATTHEW 23:12

Jesus gave His life to serve, not to be served. Putting other’s needs before our own needs is a sign of becoming a Christian Steward, of following Jesus’ example. Humility is really a sign of a strength. By putting other’s needs first we declare to the world that we are putting our complete trust in God. When we align our thoughts and actions with God’s plan for us, the result is Joy and Peace.

October 28-29, 2017: Offertory Collection: $12,339.00

All Souls: $437.00

In today’s gospel, Jesus describes the vocation of parents: “The greatest among you will be your servant.” Children take our blood, genes, strength, name, patience, and resources. A parent’s servitude begins at the moment of conception. The Lord is present in each of our acts of selfless service.

LA ESQUINA DEL PASTOR

Requiem in Aeternam

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
