Free School Meals and Pupil Premium Did you know ... just registering your child for Free School Meals means that the school gets extra money? Register now to make sure we don’t miss out. The Government is giving money to schools to help children from potentially disadvantaged families do their very best. This funding is called a ‘Pupil Premium’. In 2012-13 this extra funding was £900 per student and is utilised by school, to provide extra support directly to the young person. Our new cashless catering system means that those students entitled to Free School Meals are allocated the funds directly to the student’s Parentpay account. If you get any of the following support payments your child may be entitled to receive free school meals and then the school will also be given money to further support your child:

Income Support Income-based Jobseekers Allowance Income-related Employment and Support Allowance Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 the guaranteed element of State Pension Credit Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income

of no more than £16,190) Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit Universal Credit

To apply for Free School Meals, click the link below, or alternatively contact Mr Calvert at school and he will arrange for a form to be posted to you and if you require more support, get someone to help you fill it in. If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to contact school.

Well done Mo Bros As Movember comes to an end our 18 members of staff who bravely grew their moustaches in November to raise money for the Movember Charity can finally think about shaving! Movember encourages men to grow moustaches and the community to support them in order to raise money for Men’s Health. Funds raised are used to help men live with and beyond cancer and to ensure men living with prostate or testicular cancer have the care needed to be physically and mentally well. Ilkley Grammar School’s Mo Bros were Ben Thompson (Mo Bro Captain ), Jon Beynon, Stewart Goodbold, Keith Holder, Joe Iliff, Chris Washington, James Ibbertson, Ian Radcliffe, Adam Falkner, Nat Adams, Andy Calvert, Andy Colman, Dave Burrowes, Hughes Mouton, Peter Beaumont, Adam Daly, Phil Haworth and Tim Milburn.

Mo Bro Captain Ben Thompson was delighted so many staff wanted to join the cause, ‘It’s really important we highlight the need for men to be healthy and raise awareness of men’s health issues. It’s been an itchy month, we’ve all enjoyed the challenge, but we’ll enjoy shaving our moustaches off even more!’ In total they have raised over £1000 – well done Mo Bros!

Order Order! Our Year 12 Government and Politics group have been studying political parties and the House of Commons. They decided to have a competition to represent concepts learned. The challenge was to decorate a cake with a political theme. Anthony Gray, Year 12, won the politically themed cake competition with his cake interpretation of the House of Commons, narrowly beating the political party cupcakes and the London Riot sponge!

Next Week’s menu

Food, glorious food! Hot sausage and mustard! While we're in the mood…cold jelly and custard!

We like to think our lunchtime fare has moved on in recent years! There is plenty to choose from and remember the meal deal is only £2.15.

Sharing Success Senior Maths Challenge Following on from the Senior Team challenge last week, the individual UKMT Senior Maths Challenge results are in and it's another year of bests! A record-breaking 56% of our Post16 entrants gained a bronze certificate or above. Sam Hill led the charge in Year 12 and 3 students in Year 13 (Ben Fripp, George Ransome & Benji Wilson) achieved Gold, reaching the standard to enter the super-tough Pink Kangeroo challenge. Good luck to our intermediate girls’ cross country

team who compete in the ESAA National Finals on

Saturday in Southend.

The team includes (left to right): Sarah Pickering (10ACD), Lucy Haines (10VEB), Jemima Elgood (10VEB), Lucy Jacques (10AJH), Zoe Judkowski (10VEB) and Abbie White (10BB)

Well done to Oliver Burton (8ALC) who played in two U12 regional tennis tournaments recently. Oliver got through to the final in the first one at Batley narrowly losing in a tight 3 setter. He then went on to win the second one at the St Charles Centre for Sport where he beat the Scottish U12 number1 and the Cheshire U12 number 1. Oliver has now been invited to play in a national tournament in London. Good luck!

Congratulations to Emily Field (7LNR) who took part in a diving competition in Luton at the weekend. Emily competed with the best 12 and 13 year old divers in the country. She did very well finishing 12th out of 30 on the 3m springboard and 11th out of 22 on platform.

Well done to Emma Powell (8JP) who competed in the seniors’ section at the Scottish tooling series in Glasgow at the weekend. Emma secured 2nd place climbing up logs, chains and of course the walls with her ice axes. She had a fabulous competition. The next round is Glenmore Lodge in the Cairngorms in two weeks’ time – good luck Emma!

GCSE Overview It is important for students, staff and parents to have the overview of what GCSE commitments Year 11 have over the next few weeks. We have provided them all with this information in the form of a bookmark for their planners.

Please see the calendar below.

Operation Shoebox Thank you to everyone who contributed to this year’s Operation Shoebox. Key Stage 3 adopted this charity as their key charity this year and successfully collected nearly 50 shoeboxes. These boxes will now be distributed to children across the world, who do not receive any Christmas presents as their families simply cannot afford it – the generosity of students, parents and members of staff have made someone’s Christmas!

The Hour of Code is coming! Our world is surrounded by technology. Information, commerce, communication and entertainment all rely on computers. But only a tiny

fraction of us learn computer science, the basics of how computers work, or how to create software, apps, or websites. This year, to celebrate Computer Science Education Week (Dec 9-15), we’re joining a massive campaign to prepare our population for the 21st Century: the Hour of Code. It’s a campaign that has an ambitious goal: to help 10 million students try one hour of computer science. See http://hourofcode.org/ for details.

Are you ready to face the challenge IGS? Coming to ICT and Computer Science lessons soon…

Johnny Tuxedo Pulling out all the stops for Christmas and need a tux? Why not try Johnny Tuxedo? Some of you may remember Johnny Tuxedo from last year when some male sixth form students helped ‘prototype’ his new range aimed at the student market. If you are in the market for suits and tuxs for proms and other upcoming events in your child’s (busier than your own!) social life then you may want to take a look at their website. www.johnnytuxedo.co.uk) It is aimed at young men, 16-22 years old. They launched in April from their head office in Ilkley but are now selling in 20 different countries. The company, Buxton Pickles, are based next to the florist down at Ben Rhydding and make suits for Next, Hobbs, French Connection, Whistles and Jaeger. The suits are £99, very well made, fashionable and washable at 30 degrees, perfect for young men to wear over again at proms, dinners and balls. They also sell a complete package suit, shirt, tie for £120. Johnny Tuxedo are now successfully working with schools, PTA committees, University societies etc. who promote their suits with a 5% discount to our students, members etc. In return they pay a 10% commission to the school, PTA or club fund etc.
