SCHOOL ANNUAL FUNDThe Corpus Christi Catholic School Annual Fund is a vital partof our school’s continued success in achieving its goals.

The annual fund provides funds for technology upgrades, facilities improvements as well as being used for professionaldevelopment for our faculty.

A successful annual fund also allows the school to maintainaffordable tuition for our families while providing our studentswith the best academic tools available, and helps to close thegap between the actual cost to educate each child and the priceassociated with his or her education.

Achieving 100% participation from our school families, facultyand staff, and with contributions from parishioners, the annualfund allows us to offer outstanding academic opportunities toour students, who are the future of our parish community.

With your help we can achieve this objective and reach the 2015-2016 campaign goal of $35,000. The fund runs from November1 through October 31, 2016

For more information about the annual fund, contact StephanieGillis, Director of PR and Development, at 342-5474, ext. 1150.Donations to the CCS annual fund can be mailed to the schooloffice or made online by visiting the school’s website.

The Pilgrims who sailed to America were originallymembers of the English Separatist Church. Beforegoing to America they had fled to Holland to escapereligious persecution. Although in Holland they enjoyedmore religious tolerance, they eventually becamedisillusioned with the Dutch way of life. In the hope ofa better life, they sailed for America. The Pilgrims reached Plymouth in 1620. There, theyhad to face a terrible winter. Around 46 of the original102 had died by the next fall. Fortune turned in theirfavor and the harvest of the next year was a bumper. The remaining colonists decided to celebrate with a feastand gathered with 91 Native Americans – theWampanoag tribe - without whose help it is doubtfulthat any of the Pilgrims would have survived the firstyear. The feast lasted for 3 days. They ate wild turkey, geese and ducks and drank wine. Pumpkin pie andcranberries were not part of the first Thanksgivingdinner, but were introduced many years afterward. Though the current holiday of Thanksgiving is basedon the 1621 feast, it did not immediately become anannual celebration. Sporadic days of Thanksgivingfollowed, usually declared locally to give thanks for aspecific event such as the end of a drought, victory in aspecific battle, or after a successful harvest. It wasn’t until October 1777 that all 13 coloniescelebrated a day of Thanksgiving. The very first day ofThanksgiving was held in 1789, when President GeorgeWashington proclaimed Thursday, November 26 to be“a day of public thanksgiving and prayer,” to especiallygive thanks for the opportunity to form a new nation andthe establishment of a new constitution. Yet, even after a national day of Thanksgiving wasdeclared in 1789, Thanksgiving was not an annualcelebration. We owe the modern concept of Thanksgiving to awoman named Sarah Josepha Hale. She was the editor

of Godey’s Lady’s Book and author of the famous“Mary Had A Little Lamb” nursery rhyme. Sarah spent40 years advocating for a national, annual Thanksgivingholiday. In the years leading up to the Civil War, shesaw the holiday as a way to infuse hope and belief in thenation and its constitution. So, when the United Stateswas torn in half during the Civil War, and PresidentLincoln was searching for a way to bring the nationtogether, he discussed the matter with Sarah Hale. On October 3, 1863, Lincoln issued a ThanksgivingProclamation that declared the last Thursday inNovember to be a day of “thanksgiving and praise.” Forthe first time, Thanksgiving became a national, annualholiday with a specific date. Throughout history, the American people have foundit important and necessary to give thanks to God for allthe blessings and gifts bestowed upon them as a peopleand as individuals.

The Last Judgment“In the great parable of the

Last Judgment (Mt 25:31-46) Jesusidentifies himself with those in need. As you did it to one of the least ofthese my brethren, you did it to me.”Those who listen to Jesus’ words aresurprised, since we hear them ask: “Lord, when did we see you hungryand feed you?” And the answer:“Itell you, solemnly, insofar as you did this for one of theleast of these brothers, you did it for me” (Matt. 37-40). Love of God and love of neighbor have become one: inthe least of the brethren, we find Jesus himself, and inJesus we find God. Pope Benedict XVI

Faithful ones prayed daily the words of the Book of

Deuteronomy which expressed the heart of theirexistence: “Hear, O Israel: the Lord your God is oneLord, and you shall love the Lord your God with all yourheart, and with all your soul and with all your might(6:4-5). Jesus united into a single precept thiscommandment of love for God and the commandment oflove for neighbor found in the Book of Leviticus: “Youshall love your neighbor as yourself” (19:18; cf. Mk 12:29:31). Love of God and love of neighbor are thus inseparable, they form a single commandment. Pope Benedict XVI

Jesus is the prophet of love... Jesus

came above all to teach us love. Itconstitutes the content of the greatestcommandment he left to us. Truelove of one’s neighbor is, at thesame time, love of God. Somepeople may be astonished by this. Itcertainly IS astonishing! St. John Paul II

Charity is greater than any rule.

Moreover, all rules must lead tocharity.

St. Vincent de Paul

Do not grieve or complain thatyou were born in a time whenyou can no longer see God inthe flesh. That privilege hasnot, in fact, been taken fromyou. As Jesus says, “Whateveryou have done to the least ofthese, you have done to Me.” St. Augustine

The school of Christ is the school of charity. On the lastday, when general examination takes place, there will beno questions on the texts of Aristotle, the aphorisms ofHippocrates, or the Paragraphs of Justinian. Charity willbe the whole syllabus. St. Robert Bellarmine

At the end of life we will notbe judged by how manydiplomas we have received, how much money we havemade, how many great thingswe have done. We will bejudged by “I was hungry andyou gave me to eat .... naked ...homeless ....” Hungry not onlyfor bread – but hungry for love.

Naked not only for clothing – but naked of humandignity and respect. Homeless not only for want of aroom of bricks – but homeless because of rejection.

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

The most Blessed Sacrament is Christ made visible. The poor sick person is Christ again made visible. St. Gerard Majella

What good is it if the Eucharistic

Table is overloaded with goldenchalices, when he is dying of

hunger? The temple of ourafflicted neighbor’s body is moreholy than the altar of stone onwhich you celebrate the holysacrifice. You are able tocontemplate this altar everywhere,in the street and in the open squares.

St. John Chrysostom

The “Fear of the Lord”“The Fear of the Lord, the gift of the Holy Spirit, doesn’t mean

being afraid of God, since we know that God is our Father who alwaysloves and forgives us. It is not servile (cringing) fear, but rather joyfulawareness of God’s grandeur and a grateful realization that only in himdo our hearts find true peace. When the Holy Spirit lives in our heart,he instills consolation and peace in us. Those who place all their trustin God feel protected, like a child with his or her father. Like littlechildren, we must trust in the goodness and the protection of ourheavenly Father.” Pope Francis

“The phrase “Fear of the Lord” should be understood in terms of awe, rather than

dread. In contemplation of the Almighty, the Christian does not experience servilefear, but a sincere and serious respect that prompts genuine and active adherence.People should not fear God, thinking he is always ready to punish, but rather theyshould love him because he is always ready to forgive. God is not a relentlesssovereign who condemns the guilty, but a loving father whom we must love not outof fear of punishment, but because of his goodness. The Lord is a God who is just, but always ready to reveal himself as merciful and compassionate.”

Pope Benedict XVI

“There is no fear in love. Perfect love drives out fear. Fear implies punishment. Whoever fears has not yet come toperfection in love.” 1 John 4:18

“It is a great mistake to be afraid of God and to act in His presence like a timid and craven slave, trembling with frightbefore his master. No one — whether friend or brother, father or mother, lover or spouse — loves you more than God.”

St. Alphonsus Liguori

“Brothers and sisters: What will separate us from the love of Christ? I am certain neither death nor life, neither angelsnor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor powers, neither height nor depth nor any other creature, willbe able to separate us from the love of God that comes to us in Christ Jesus, Our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39

“For me to be happy and confident, it is sufficient to know with assurance that in Jesus is my life and my death, thatin spite of my sins, I have placed my trust in him, and I shall not be disappointed.” Archbishop Oscar Romero

“I trust Jesus so completely that even if I were to see hell open up before me, and find myself on the brink of the abyss,I should not lose confidence. I should not despair but continue to trust Him.” St. Pio of Pietrelcina

“St. Paul explains that Christ came to forgive sin, and his love is greater than any sin, stronger than all my personalsins or those of anyone else. This is the faith of the Church. This is the Good News of God’s love that the Churchproclaims, and that I proclaim to you today: God loves you with an everlasting love.” St. John Paul II
