Balance and Clarity soap and we are always experi-menting. I don’t think I’m ready to come up with a signature scent yet but I can see making my own scents. I have some ideas for some new lines that include ylang-ylang and lemon,” said Ad-ams, who also includes bath teas, bath accessories and essential oils and ower pet-als for people who want to

do their own experimenting with scented products.

e store carries pure rose water and orange blos-som water oral sprays and Deron is working on some men’s products with a san-dalwood base.

She’s thrilled that her line of baby products will be car-ried exclusively in Vernon by Kanga & Roo’s Boutique opening in February.

“We have been ap-proached by other retail out-lets and one hotel to carry our products and we also do private labeling. I was pretty happy when people started approaching us about the

products and everyone who comes into the store says how happy they are to see everything,” she said.

e products are also available online atlatherupcanada.ca.

Adam’s talented family members contribute stock to the store. Mother-in-law Ruth Adams makes ador-able retro-style aprons and sister, artist Shelley Siddall

paints greeting cards. “We’re really happy with

how things are going and we like the heritage build-ing. One long-time resident came in and said he remem-bers when this was a café and the kids would come in a er school and have sodas. I just love all of this,” said Adams.

Lather Up Canada Body Care is open 10 a.m. to5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and will be open on Light Up Night for as long as the festivities go on. Starting with Light Up, customers will receive a complimen-tary soap with each $20 pur-chase.

Christmas Comes To Armstrong

ROGER KNOXMorning Star Staff

The theme may be small but the event

itself is big. e annual Armstrong

Spallumcheen Down-town Light Up helps kick o Christmas in the re-gion on ursday, Nov. 29.

“Our theme this year is It’s a Small World,” said Patti Noonan, executive director of the Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a mul-ticultural theme so we’re encouraging all business-es to have multicultural decorations or things that are global.”

Events for the big light up actually commence that morning.

Kids from Armstrong’s schools will decorate the big Christmas tree at the corner of Okanagan Street and Pleasant Valley Road beside Margarieta’s Place.

e decorating runs throughout the day and when the kids are n-

ished, they receive a treat bag courtesy of down-town merchants which will be delivered by a “special guest.”

As the decorating goes on, some of the down-town stores will be having light up day specials. e Brown Derby will play host to the Mostly Minis’ mini goats from its pet-ting zoo.

At 4 p.m., activities will begin in the area of Spirit Square, including cookie decorating. B.C. Hydro will be on-hand to discuss its LightSmart program, and the Royal Canadian Legion will be cooking up hot dogs and hamburgers.

e light-up’s main event - the annual parade, featuring Santa Claus, will start with marshal-ling at 5:15 p.m.

e nighttime parade, the only one of its kind in the region, starts prompt-ly at 6 p.m.

“ e parade route starts at the back of the Village Cheese Company,” said

Noonan. It goes down Pleasant Valley to Shep-herd’s (Home Hardware), down to Margarieta’s, makes the loop and goes down the other side of the one-way to the police sta-tion.

“Santa Claus, who will be riding on a re truck, will make another half-loop back to Spirit Square.”

Santa will hop o the re truck and throw the switch to o cially light up the downtown and announce Christmas has come to Armstrong and Spallumcheen.

“It’s getting bigger every year,” said Noonan of the light up festival and pa-rade. “We gure most of the people in Armstrong come out for it.”

e 2011 crowd for the parade was estimated at between 1,000 and 1,500 people.

A er Santa Claus lights up the town, there will be a chance for kids to visit with him at Spirit Square.

If the weather doesn’t co-operate, however, Santa will move to one of the downtown restaurants in order to visit with the children.

ose planning on at-tending light up are asked to dress for the weather.

“It (weather) is unpre-dictable at that time of year,” said Noonan. “We could have clear skies, we could have rain or we could have a snow storm. So come prepared.”

ere are several new entries in this year’s pa-rade, and the chamber has donated several new strings of lights for the light up.

Santa Claus will stick around for part of the weekend to kick o Christmas celebrations.

He’ll be at the Leaf and Bean from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 1.

Many of the down-town merchants will also have specials and sales throughout the kicko weekend.

CARA BRADYMorning Star Staff

Early on a rainy Monday morning people are coming into the Armstrong Food Bank to ll out applications for Christmas hampers.

“I’ve only been taking applications for two days and I’m already at number 32, which is unusual. ere are usually not that many in November and there are some new people. I’m thinking we will be up this year,” said Christine Fedick, Armstrong Food Bank co-ordinator. e Armstrong Food Bank, which has been in the community for 30 years, is now administered through the Armstrong Boys & Girls Club. Last year the food bank distributed 173 Christmas hampers which helped 375 people, including 168 children. e food bank provides 80-125 regular hampers per month for a total of 1,404 last year.

e food bank is a com-munity project year-round, relying on donations of food and money, and the spirit is never more evident than at Christmas. When the hamper applications are taken, the age and sex

of children are noted and parents can add some sug-gestions from the child’s wish list. is information is sent to the Armstrong Legion where it is put on the Angel Tree. Members of the public can come and take a child’s wish, buy the gi and bring it back to the Legion by Dec. 17. e gi will be put in the appropri-ate hamper for pick up Dec. 21.

ere will be a table of things like hygiene items, pet food and laundry soap, along with gi s like toques, scarves and mitts from the Knitting Club, for people to choose from when they get the Christmas ham-pers Dec. 21. ere is also always a basket of donated hygiene items in the o ce which people can pick up.

People can also support the Armstrong Food Bank through Kra Food for Families. Each email ad-dress can can go online to www.kraftfoodforfamilies.ca and click once a day. For each click Kra Food for Families will donate 50 cents to the chosen food bank. e food bank that raises the most signatures

online in their region by Dec. 31 will receive an ad-ditional $5,000 donation.

Fedick will be at Light Up with a laptop to get people started supporting the food bank through the Kra

Food for Families Program.“ is is an exciting pro-

gram and it can help us a lot. We are very grateful for the help we get from everyone, the people who contribute and all our won-

derful and hardworking volunteers.” she said.

e food bank and Boys & Girls Club are there for the community all year.

“ e community knows the need is there and they

support us with donations of all kinds,” said Kirsty Hopkins, centre direc-tor, Armstrong Boys & Girls Club, which is part of Okanagan Boys & Girls Clubs.

“ ere are de nite needs here. With the economy now, people nd it hard to get jobs or they are laid o . With some families, the dad goes away to nd work and mom and the kids stay here and that puts stress on the families. I think people are surprised at the extent of our services, not just for youth but for families and in di erent areas like par-enting and counseling for everyone in the commu-nity.”

e Family Development Program has two family and one youth counsellors available at no charge to anyone in the community. e A er School Program, Early Years Program, in-cluding Mother Goose for ages birth to ve, and the Recreational Program Sat-urdays for ages seven to 12 are all open. Parenting programs include Recharge and Reconnect for Parents and Nobody’s Perfect.

Food Bank Getting In The Spirit

Armstrong Food Bank coordinator Christine Fedick, left, and Kirsty Hopkins, centre director for the Armstrong Boys & Girls Club, which administers the food bank program, with some of the donations which have started to come in for the Christmas Hampers. Applications for hampers are being taken now at the food bank.
