From The desk of Fr. Jim

The Holy Year has come to a close. We have had

the great privilege of having at easy hand the Ple-

nary Indulgence for the Holy Year. What a great

blessing it has been. I have had the opportunity of

applying the Indulgence to over 60 of my de-

ceased friends and relatives. I hope you took the

same opportunity for your beloved deceased.

Thanks to Bishop Zubik for granting the Holy

Year privilege to the Chapel.

We have all had a few days to digest the

information presented at the consultation meet-

ings on the 17th & 21st. I understand the shock.

Please keep in mind that all of us have to take

into account the declining resources available.

The number of priests in 2020 will be 112-133

and that is not yet the predicted low point. In an-

other 10 years or so the number of priests will fall

to between 80 to 90 total active for the diocese.

The number of Catholics because of the aging of

the population will also fall dramatically unless we

become serious about inviting our fallen away

brothers & sisters and those who never knew

Christ to come to know him. Right now we need

to work with what we have. Right now we are

barely maintaining what we have with nothing to

apply to expanding ministry. We need to get down

to “fighting trim” as they say. So we may better

serve those who are active and invite those who

are not. Remember no decisions have been

made yet that will not happen until the first quarter

of 2018. You can still give feedback on the web-

site www.onmissionchurchalive.org or write to:

On Mission Church Alive, 111 Blvd of the Allies,

Pgh, Pa. 15222

Our faith is in Jesus Christ in the Catholic

Church he gave us. Whatever our fears are now,

in the perfect love of Jesus, fear is cast out. Love

Jesus & his Church. Pray for those who have the

heavy responsibility of making recommendations

to Bishop Zubik and pray for Bishop Zubik. I know

the weight of these terrible decisions keep him up

at night.

God bless you. Pax,

Fr. Jim

Eucharistic Adoration & Veneration

of the Relic of St. Thomas Becket at St. Anthony's Chapel

On Sunday, December 4th at

3:00 pm, we will begin to pray the Church's evening prayer be-fore Christ in the Eucharist. The

Blessed Sacrament will be ex-

posed in the monstrance at the beginning of evening prayer and

the service will conclude with Benediction, Christ imparting His blessing to us in His Eucharistic

Presence. Following the service, the faithful who wish to do so will have the opportunity to venerate a relic of one of the saints. For December, it will

be the relic of St. Thomas Becket whose feast

day is December 29. For more information, please visit the Chapel’s website www.saintanthonyschapel.org

Coming in Advent

Ladies of Charity Drive for Baby Products Did you know that 60% of infants of mothers age 24 and younger live in poor or low income fami-lies in the Pittsburgh region? In some communi-ties, the rate of poverty is even higher, ranking Pittsburgh in the top ten of babies born in poverty in the nation. During Advent, the Ladies of Char-ity is partnering with Catholic Charities to col-lect baby care items for expectant and new moms and babies. There will be a bin at each church for your donations. Diapers and baby hygiene items including wipes, lotions, diaper rash cream etc. are needed most. They also welcome receiving blankets, bibs, socks, and pacifiers. If you prefer to make a monetary donation, the Ladies of Char-ity will do the shopping for you. Cash or checks payable to Ladies of Charity can be dropped into the bins in church. Thank you!

Women and Men Sharing Faith and Hope

Our next meeting is on November 28th at Most Holy Name School – Chapters 37, 38. 39 and 40 and this will conclude our meetings until next spring. We will not meet on November 21st.

Do You Wonder What Our

Ladies Of Charity Do? On Saturday, November 12th our La-dies of Charity visited the residents at St. Mary’s Courtyard, an assisted living facility in Sharpsburg. With an accordion player, delicious soft pret-zels with mustard, apple cider and little stuffed animals the ladies cele-brated Oktoberfest with the residents. They had a sing-a-long and also danced to polkas. Tears were shed as the residents reminisced about dancing to those polkas at their wedding recep-tions many years ago. Our ladies shed tears of joy because we were able to bring smiles and re-create memories for the residents. Last week we made little Christmas gifts for our shut-ins. We can’t tell you about them yet because they won’t be delivered until December but then we will share a picture of our creations and the many laughs and frustrations we had with glue guns and ribbons. If you are interested in this wonder-ful ministry, please talk to Becky Hurst at Most Holy Name or Donna Bodnar at St. Alo-ysius. We’d love to have you join us!

coming of the Light of the World.
