BARBARA ROWELLManaging Artistic Director of

Quincy Community Theatre from 1983 to 2006

This production of Beauty and the Beast is dedicated with love and gratitude to Barbara Rowell. Barbara’s impact on QCT’s past, present and future cannot be overstated-- she was not only a true champion of the art form, but also a fierce advocate for centering the theatre as a cultural cornerstone of our community. During her decades-long tenure as QCT’s leader, Barbara directed countless productions, tirelessly promoted the theatre’s programming, and taught numerous theatre classes-- QCT’s education program began under Barbara’s stewardship. Before becoming Managing Artistic Director, Barbara began her journey with QCT as a volunteer. Her decades-long dedication was the foundation of her success as a “hands-on” leader. Her willingness to jump in and work at every level of a production, and in every corner of the theatre, was the true measure of her passion for Quincy Community Theatre.

9Quincy Community Theatre • 2021 Season

The title song to Disney’s Beauty and the Beast became an instant classic when it first appeared in the animated film in 1991. It has been sung and heard all over the world and is a song that I thought I knew quite well. When working on this production, I finally thought to ask myself, “What is the tale as old as time? What does that actually mean?” My immediate thought was romance; however, while romance is certainly an integral piece of the story, it seems that the lyric is pointing to something more specific to the legend of Beauty and the Beast. Is there a tale even older than romance? While studying the script, I discovered there was a word that reoccurred throughout the story, and that was the word “change.”

Going all the way back to Adam, people have been headstrong in either their beliefs or their relationships. Then circumstances present themselves in such a way that one realizes they must make a choice: either stay firm on their idea or feeling, which could lead to deterioration (physically, emotionally, spiritually), or they can make a change and open the possibility of healing or growth. To realize you are wrong is one thing; to admit you are wrong is another thing! Oh, the strength it takes, but, oh, the relief and the journey towards peace! Our maternal teapot, Mrs. Potts, refers to change as bittersweet... a blend of emotion that is sweet but tinged with sadness.

The scenic design for this production serves as a physical metaphor for this theme. A framework of vines, thorns, filigree, and foliage, both beautiful and dangerous, threatens to devour what is there, but they are oddly beautiful in their fluidity and growth. They not only represent the change that has happened, but also the opportunity for the change that can happen; the opportunity to prune the dead wood so that growth can occur.

As we finish another tumultuous year, and as we move into the holiday season, let us remember the tale as old time – to admit, to forgive, to open our hearts to the possibility of change.

Welcome to Quincy Community Theatre and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast!

Brandon J. Thomsen

Meet the Cast*Devin Boccardi (Cogsworth) is a Graphic Designer and Printer for Tri-City Sports Screen Printing and Design. This is his first appearance with QCT, but he has been involved in choir and theatre throughout his life. His last few appearances were in Quincy University’s productions of The Secret Garden (Dickon) and A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley (Jacob Marley).

Mason Ellison (Ensemble) currently works for WGEM as a Master Control Operator. He has been involved in numerous QCT productions in the past including Chicago (2021), You Can’t Take It With You (2019), Hello, Dolly! (2017), Sweeny Todd (2017), and received the QCT Ghost Light Award for the 2017 season. Mason would like to thank his friends and family for their support and looks forward to sharing this story with them.

Mekia Gay (Ensemble) is a Pastry Chef in Quincy. She has been in three shows at QCT: Mamma Mia!, Chicago, and She Kills Monsters. In between baking and theatre, her hobbies include painting, building tiny houses for her bookshelf, watching true crime, and drinking a lot of Boba tea.

*Alex Ginos (Ensemble) lives in Quincy and is married to Julie Ginos, and they have four children (Gavin, Oliver, Evelyn & Avril). He works for CVS Specialty Pharmacy and leads worship at the Crossing Hannibal Location. He has been the sound designer at QCT for Frozen, The Belle of Amherst and Wonderful Things: the Songs of Jerry Herman.

Julie Ginos (Silly Girl, Ensemble) is excited to be on stage at QCT again, this time with her husband, Alex. She made her QCT debut with her QUILTA-winning performance as Donna in Mamma Mia! When not at the theatre, she enjoys going on Disney vacations with Alex and her four kiddos (Gavin, Oliver, Evelyn & Avril).

Valerie Hernandez (Wardrobe) has been seen onstage at QCT previously in Little Shop of Horrors (Ronnette) & Sister Act (Ensemble), and backstage serving as Costume Designer for Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook, Chicago, Is He Dead?, and You Can’t Take It with You. Hernandez is a founding member & director of the award-winning Square Peg Group-Troupe, has directed for MROC, JWCC, and Quincy University.

*First-time QCT performer

32 Quincy Community Theatre • 2021 Season

Mark Hespen (Beast) is excited to be playing the Beast. Mark was last seen as Billy Flynn in QCT’s Chicago. Mark graduated from NIU with a BFA in Acting and is a Second City Conservatory graduate. Mark is the Co-Host of “Mornings w/Mark & Sam” on 97.9 KICK-FM. He would like to thank his co-host Sam, his incredible girlfriend Lindsey, his parents for their support, his brother Phil, and sister Julia. Mark only hopes he is half as great as his older brother Bob was when he played the Beast back in high school.

*Eli Higgins (Chip) is excited to be cast in his very first play! He is a 6th grader at QJHS and likes to spend his time drawing, reading, going on outdoor adventures in the backyard, and creating original comics. Eli is the third of six sons and loves spending time with his active family. He especially loves to help, care for, chase, and play with his two very busy, ‘crazy’ toddler brothers. He gives 100% to everything he does and cannot wait to play Chip onstage!

Allison Hutson (Silly Girl, Ensemble) is a 2020 college graduate of St. Ambrose University, where she studied music and marketing. She is studying to get her Masters at Quincy University, where she is Assistant Director of Admissions Communications. Allison is a foodie and coffee enthusiast that loves to connect with others through the arts. She was last seen on the QCT stage as Mona in Chicago.

Melissa Griswold Irvine (Ensemble) is a finance professor at Mizzou. She is an author and public speaker on personal finance topics. She made her QCT debut in Mamma Mia! In her spare time, Melissa plays tennis and pickleball, sings in the Quincy Symphony Choir, and volunteers for the Hannibal Regional Hospital Auxiliary. Melissa and her husband, Shawn, enjoy traveling and taking cruises with their five adult children.

*Josh Jones (Gaston) is the Lead Trial Attorney for the Adams County State’s Attorney’s Office and President of the Quincy Humane Society. Signed up for auditions by his two daughters (because they love Beauty and the Beast and thought it would be funny), Josh is a first time performer for QCT. When not working, rehearsing, or trying to keep up with the rest of the singers, Josh can usually be found working out or eating 5 dozen eggs....because he’s roughly the size of a barge.

Ruth Kummerow (Babette) said Oooh la la when she discovered theatre in 2017. This is her 7th show at QCT; she was most recently seen in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (Judy). She thanks Glenn for his encouragement and is ecstatic that live theatre is back!

*First-time QCT performer

33Quincy Community Theatre • 2021 Season

Jeremy Kurfman (Lumiere) from Mount Sterling, is excited to return to the stage at QCT where he was previously part of several student theatre productions. He encourages all with an interest in theatre to try it, as they will meet new friends, find new passions, and discover skills they don’t know they have.

*Brandon Mahana (Ensemble) returns to theatrical endeavors for the first time since 2012. Brandon last appeared in the EWTN documentary Serra: Ever Forward Never Back, having played Jose Maria, a mule boy who worked for Father Junipero Serra as a Native American interpreter. Brandon loves the idea of being behind the camera and writing scripts. He is a dreamer and is determined that one day he will put his talents to full use.

Sage Mann (Monsieur D’Arque, Ensemble) is happy to finally be living in Quincy after having appeared in Spamalot, She Loves Me, Is He Dead? during visits to his grandfather in Payson. Sage runs the YouTube channel TAPAS and Stuff Productions, where he recently starred in Better Yet?, a radio play created by fellow ensemble member Mason Ellison.

*Nic Myers (Ensemble) is a senior at Highland High School in Lewistown, MO. He is a member of his school’s Drama Club in which he has performed in five shows. This will be Nic’s first performance at QCT, and he is very excited to be part of such an amazing cast.

Bonnie Brod Nytes (Mrs. Potts) is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor who has also taught in the Quincy Catholic School system for many years. She considers herself a “veteran” of QCT – in that she first became involved many years ago (when it was still “Little Theatre”)- and actually “helped” with the physical moving of the theatre to the current venue. Bonnie has been both on stage and backstage for many shows in the past. Her favorite role was Mona in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Bonnie is thrilled to be back on stage after a “several year hiatus” and feels that it is rather “type casting” to be playing a “nurturing, singing teapot” (short and stout with a strong maternal instinct and a love of music!).

Drew Quintero (Ensemble) is so excited to be making Disney Magic once again on the QCT stage. This is Drew’s second stint in the enchanted castle, having been an ensemble member in QCT’s 2005 production of Beauty and the Beast. 28 years ago, Drew auditioned for QCT’s Stage Kids with a song from Beauty and the Beast and has called QCT his second home ever since. He is so thrilled to be sharing the magic of live theatre with you! “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible” - Walt Disney

A former QCT board member and QUILTA award winner, he is “retired” and now owns and operates Loyd’s Gifts & Collectibles in Quincy. Doug has four children and two grandchildren. He enjoys singing in his church’s praise band and picking vintage and antique items for his shop.

*Vicky Vail (Silly Girl, Ensemble) is thrilled to be on the QCT stage for the first time, as well as recently becoming the costume shop manager at QCT! You have not seen her in the previous QCT productions of Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook (Stage Manager), and Bye Bye Birdie (Stage Manager). Some of her favorite roles she has played elsewhere are Lady Capulet in Romeo and Juliet, Mrs. Paroo in The Music Man, and M’Lynn Eatonton in Steel Magnolias. She wrote all about her once-in-a-lifetime experiences in her book, BE LOVE (on Amazon). She enjoys renovating her 1970s home, teaching her new puppy tricks, discovering the best ice cream with her husband, Brady, finding treasures at thrift stores and learning new recipes on tik tok.

Gretchen Wolfmeyer (Ensemble) first fell in love with Beauty and the Beast 30 years ago when she and Randy were just starting their own story. Now married, with two teenage stars of their own, Thalia and Conall, Gretchen and her family all recently worked on QCT’s production of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.

Randy Wolfmeyer (Lefou) is happy to be back on stage with this talented cast, including his wife, Gretchen, to tell a story about learning to love one another. During all that time, Jim was a proud and supportive cheerleader. “After my wife passed away in October 2020, I realized there were so many reasons that I should finally be a part of the magic myself.
