“I am the

Alpha and the

Omega, says the Lord God, “the one who is and who was and who is to come, the almighty.” Revelation 1:8

In honor of my seminary formation…8 years of formation with the Benedictines at Conception Abbey and St. Meinrad Archabbey – this week’s prayer is the Prayer of St. Benedict. Gracious and holy Father, grant us the intellect to understand you, reason to discern you, diligence to seek you, wisdom to find you, a spirit to know you, a heart to meditate upon you. May our ears hear you, may our eyes behold you, and may our tongues proclaim you. Give us grace that our way of life may be pleasing to you, that we may have the patience to wait for you and the perseverance to look for you. Grant us a perfect end--your holy presence, a blessed resurrection and life everlasting. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

In this last Sunday of the liturgical year for the Church we recognize Christ as our King. He is like a King of none other as he is a Servant-King for he came to the earth not to rule us but to serve us. These are not just grandiose words that Jesus uses to impress us. What king would allow himself to be born in a man-ger? What king would kneel to wash the feet of his disciples? What king would let himself to be hung on a cross to save the lives of his people? We can image no king would serve to his people in such ways, except one, Jesus.

The honorific of King is our tribute to Jesus, for there is no other human word that expresses the absolute rule of a people. Jesus does not see himself as a king over us, however. He would much rather have us think of him a close friend, a brother that we can confide all of our troubles with confidence that he listens and cares for our well-being. There is nothing of more glorious praise that we can make to Jesus than to open ourselves to him in total love as he does for us at every instant of our lives.

Jesus, our king, is not on a throne far away from us where our prayers are barely heard. No, Jesus is always near. Jesus is the old friend sit on the park bench as the old man sit reflecting on his life, sharing his joys and his sorrows with that friend who has been with him through all his life.

Jesus is that close companion sitting at the kitchen table as she sits shelling peas that will be part of the family meal as she fre-quently checks the roast beef in the oven. She shares that companion the events of the past year for her family, the moment of pride and the fears that mother has for children and grandchildren. And while she gets up to put the peas on the stove, she knows that this compan-ion never ties of hearing about the family and understands her all fears.

Jesus is that friend who lies next to the adolescent on the bed as she tries to figure out that last algebra problem before she turns out the light for the night. Jesus listens as she talks of her future and the hard questions of her young life. What college should she attend? Does she really love the boy she has been going steady with? Is attending weekly mass really that important? And as she drifts off to sleep, Jesus is there murmuring into her thoughts that answer can be found in him who is never far away.

Jesus is that loving soul who sits patiently in the nursery as a mother holds her child against her breast as she rocks and hums to help bring sleep to an exhausted child. As the mother sits in the dim light, she wonders what will be the future of her child. Will he be an athlete? Or a genius? Will he marry and how many children will he have? Or will he be a priest? As she rocks, the mother knows that she will have to be patient for she cannot know the future. As the mother drops of the sleep, she prays that Jesus will take care of this child that she loves. And Jesus listens.

Jesus sits next to the husband in a pew as they look at the casket that holds the man’s wife of 63 years. The man wonders how will I ever be able to live without you after all this time? And Jesus whispers to him, “I will always be with you. Lean on me for I will be your strength.” This is Jesus, who is our king.

The people who walked in darkness

have seen a great light;

They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero,

Father-Forever, Prince of Peace.

(Isaiah 9:1a, 5b)

In your charity, please prayerfully remember those from our faith community who have entered eternal life.

Treasures From

Our Tradition

Although our Puritan forebears at Plymouth Rock were almost a hundred years removed from their Catholic roots, the old liturgical calendar still had an unconscious claim on their hearts. We’ve already seen how on Saint Martin’s Day, November 11, medieval continental Europe observed a great harvest day of Thanksgiving, with games, dances, parades, and a festive dinner of roast goose. With the goose went ample draughts of “Saint Martin’s Wine,” the first wine of the new harvest. Martinmas celebrated full barns and larders stocked for the winter. Even after the Reformation, the tradition of eating goose on Saint Martin’s Day was retained in Holland, and it was there that our Pilgrims encountered this tradition. When Governor Bradford sent four hunters out into the Massachusetts wilderness in the autumn of 1621, they did indeed find some geese and ducks, and were persuaded by the indigenous people to try turkey, too. Just as the liturgical calendar has been tweaked over the years, President Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving to the third Thursday in November in 1939, probably to extend the Christmas shopping season. The protest was so great that in 1941 the day established by President Lincoln, the last Thursday in November, was restored. If the Pilgrims had known of the Martinmas connection, they might never have celebrated at all! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Christ is King On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. It’s easy to understand today’s scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus’ words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. No matter what nation we belong to or what language we speak, he “has made us into a kingdom” (Revelation 1:6)—one people united in love and peace for all eternity. Copyright © J. S. Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Gospel: John 18:33b-37

On the Way to Mass: What are some things you know about the universe? How do you care for all of God’s creation? On the Way Home From Mass: What does a good king do, say, and look like? Living the Word: With your family, put on a royal dinner and dress, speak and eat as if all of you are royalty. During this special occasion, discuss how through Baptism we are at once prophet, priest, and king/queen. As king/queens we are called to be good stewards of the earth and take care of it. See how little waste you can create with this meal. From using cloth napkins and items that require less packaging or none at all, to conserving water, notice the cosmic impact you can make through simple acts.

Scripture Lessons: John 18:33b-37; Christ the King.

God promised a powerful king for his people who would unite them, fight for them, and lead them to victory against their enemies. This image of a triumphant Messiah-King kept God’s people going. When Jesus entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, hopes ran high: was he the one?

On Good Friday, the image of Jesus, bound, seemingly powerless before the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, was not what they had in mind. They didn’t want a leader who talked of love, suffering, and service. They wanted someone who would wipe their enemies off the face of the earth.

Jesus is King—not just of Israel, but of us and the whole universe. He told Pilate that his Kingdom is not of this world, not bound by the limits of an earthly kingdom.

Calm down and parent with love

Do you find yourself yelling more than you would like? When your child does something wrong, is anger your first response? In fact, anger is damaging to the parent-child relationship because it can cloud our judgment. It causes us to act impulsively rather than with love. It takes only a split-second to lose control and say or do something you will regret. Watch for it. Anger is difficult to control under certain circumstances. When you are depressed, afraid, unwell, or tired, you are particularly vulnerable to a rush of anger.

Stay close to God. When you don’t take enough time to nurture your spiritual life, your anger can be quick to flare. Try to remain conscious of these conditions and protect yourself with daily prayer and frequent Sacraments. Care for yourself. Keeping yourself healthy mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually is something you do for yourself AND your family. If anger is a problem for you, figure out what is needed to stem your anger and get help right away.

What’s Happening at St. Agnes School………... Thanksgiving Plays

1st grade hosted their parents for some early Thanksgiving festivities on Monday, November 19th. Students performed 4 reader’s theater productions: A Very Important Holiday, The First Thanksgiving, Squanto, Friend of the Pilgrims, and The Mayflower. The students worked hard on their production and were proud to share the things they learned about Thanksgiving through these performances.

St. Agnes School Christmas program will be held on

Thursday, December 6th in the school gym beginning at 6:30. Students in Pre-K-5th grade will be participating in

the program and should dress in nice attire. The doors will open at 6:10 and students should be in their classrooms by 6:15. Families are invited to help us celebrate the blessed

season of Christmas.

Hotdog Feed The annual hotdog feed was held on Wednesday, November 14th. Hosted by the 4th and 5th grade

classes, school students and staff were invited to enjoy a lunch of hotdogs, beans, chips, jell-o and a cookie. The dinner was prepared by 5th grade and served by the 4th and 5th grade classes. Students

paid $2 to eat with some donating extra. Proceeds from the event benefit the 4th & 5th grade service project, which is to purchase Christmas gifts for needy children in the valley. A total of $850 was raised during the event.

Classroom News………... Kindergarten Class By Teri Ramirez

Kindergarten students are having so much fun while learning at the same time. I don’t think they know they are learning! This month we had a few celebrations where we got to show off what we have learned so far in our kindergarten journey. The students invited their moms and grandmothers for muffins with mom, and their dads and grandfathers for donuts with dad. They were all so excited to share with them the songs they have learned and two plays that they worked hard on. Also in November, we had a friendship feast with our friends from Pre-k and the students got to make their own pumpkin pie. The food was delicious!

4th Grade Class By Kristie Becker

Fourth grade students have been working hard! We recently lead Mass and that is always a great experience for the students. They love being leaders in the Church! The fourth graders were happy to recently help with the Hot Dog Feed. They are excited for a season of Thanksgiving and giving to others. In science, we have started one of our favorite units, weather. There are always so many interesting things to learn in this unit! In math, we are starting to multiply two-digit numbers and are learning concepts to set us up for division. We have been practicing our facts and doing some fun math activities as well! We are still working our way through a grammar unit to become

better writers. I love seeing how much their writing has improved since the beginning of the year! They are currently writing Thanksgiving stories, where their characters, conflict and setting were decided by rolling dice! The stories are always fun to write and read! In social studies, we are learning about the different tribes of Plains Indians that settled in Nebraska. Fourth grade is looking forward to all the fun holiday activities coming up in the next month!
