Dear Parishioners, Even in our time, when democracy and equality are held in high re-gard, kings connote the idea of majesty, power and absolute authority. Fairy tales, cartoons and modern television specials about aristocrats of old seem to draw out our fascination with earlier times, when kings ruled their nations and received unquestioned loyalty. We see some of that splendor in today’s second reading as we cele-brate the Feast of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Indeed, the

majesty of kings and queens of old is magnified several degrees as we contemplate Jesus, the image of the invisible God, who was present at creation, through whom all things were creat-ed, and who is filled with divinity. When we think of how vast our universe is – and we’re learning more and more of its unbelievable size – we can only begin to fath-om the majesty of Jesus, King of that Universe. Yet the other readings move us to reflect on another as-pect of kingship – service to

the people and mercy to those in need. In the first reading, as the Israelites anoint David as King of Israel, they recognize not only his success in battle but his call by God to shepherd his people. The Israelites welcome David as king because of his care for them – the same care he gave to the sheep in his father’s flock before God called him to kingship. Jesus shows an even greater depth of care for his people. En-throned on the cross – his only earthly throne to date – Jesus dies for love of God’s people, to bring salvation and everlasting life to them. Even more, a short time before his agonizing death, he turns to the dying thief crucified next to him with merciful words of as-surance: Today you will be with me in Paradise. Jesus shows us his identity as a serene, humble and loving King and God in his last mo-ments on earth – the kind of King that we as Christians can joyfully give our own lives to. Jesus’ majesty as the eternal God and King is matched by his love – a love that drove him to a horrible death for our salvation. What does this incredible King call us to? How can we serve Jesus, whose power and glory as God are matched only by the depth of his love? As Christians, we are baptized into his service – each called to serve Jesus and his kingdom in a unique way, accord-ing to our particular gifts, temperament and life circumstances. As King and as shepherd of our souls, Jesus calls us step by step into his service. He reveals our call, our role in his kingdom, from one moment to the next – if we take the time to pray and lis-ten to his voice.

Fr. Tad

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s solemnity, the final feast of the Church year, is a youngster as feasts go. In 1925, Pope Pius XI was distressed by global political upheaval and the de-Christianizing of society. That year was a “Holy Year,” keyed to the sixteen hundredth anniversary of the Coun-cil of Nicaea, when the words “and of his kingdom there will be no end” were added to the Creed. The Pope ex-plained that although most feasts had developed over many centuries, the Church sometimes provided a new feast to address new needs. He pointed to the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, showing Christ’s love and compassion in a time when many people embraced a cold and gloomy spirituality. Originally on the last Sun-day of October, in the late 1960s the solemnity of Christ the King was moved to the last Sunday of the year. Fresh from baptism’s waters, we are anointed with chrism “as Christ was anointed priest, prophet, and king.” This feast is a key to our identity. On this feast, we recognize Christ as a king who breaks the usual mold of kingship, and who shapes his kingdom with our hands, our words, our deeds of love and service. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

OF KINGS AND KINGSHIP Americans have an uncomfortable relationship with kings. The American Revolution was fought for inde-pendence from King George, after all. Nonetheless, to-day every Catholic church around the world celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Uni-verse. Today’s feast invites us to look beyond our na-tional loyalties and rejoice in our primary identity. We are children of God in Jesus, Christ the King. Our readings help us consider what it’s like to belong to God’s king-dom. The book of Samuel captures the deep longing of the Israelites for a king to shepherd them. Saint Paul reminds the Colossians that we belong to the kingdom of Christ, whose power he praises in a beautiful hymn. Fi-nally, Luke’s Gospel calls to mind the kind of king Jesus chooses to be—a suffering servant, a man for others. By sacrificing his life for us, Jesus throws open the gates of Paradise.

The History of Christ the King How the Rise of Secularism

Initiated the Feast by Deacon Joel and Lisa Schmidt

Pope Pius XI universally ins tuted the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King in 1925 in his encyc-lical Quas Primas. At the me, secularism was on the rise, and many Chris ans, even Catholics, were doub ng Christ’s authority, as well as the Church’s, and even doub ng Christ’s existence. Pius XI, and the rest of the Chris an world, wit-nessed the rise of dictatorships in Europe, and saw Catholics being taken in by these earthly leaders. Just as the Feast of Corpus Chris was ins tuted when devo on to the Eucharist was at a low point, the Feast of Christ the King was ins tuted during a

me when respect for Christ and the Church was waning, when the feast was most needed. In fact, it is s ll needed today, evidenced by its ins tu on in many other Chris an denomina ons. Pius hoped the ins tu on of the feast would have various effects. They were: ♦ That na ons would see that the Church has the right to freedom, and immunity from the state (Quas Primas, 32). ♦ That leaders and na ons would see that they are bound to give respect to Christ (Quas Primas, 31).

♦ That the faithful would gain strength and courage from the celebra on of the feast, as we are reminded that Christ must reign in our hearts, minds, wills, and bodies (Quas Primas, 33).

Celebrated one week prior to the first Sunday of Advent — a purposeful me of preparing, wai ng, and making straight the path for Jesus in our lives — the feast that proclaims Christ being Creator, Redeemer, Preserver, and Ruler of the universe is just as relevant today as ever.
