REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS
FOR THE FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING
Today’s Liturgy continues to center around God’s Eternal
Plan for salvation. We are called to reflect back upon
man’s journey and reconciliation with God the Creator.
Through Adam, mankind found himself separated from
the Divine. Man had been given everything he possibly
could desire but, when tempted by the serpent, willingly
decided to eat that one forbidden thing – the fruit of the
tree of knowledge of good and evil. He willingly decided to
surrender his innocence for pride, pleasure, and
possessions. In the “blink of an eye”, humanity lost all and
simultaneously introduced chaos into God’s creation.
Accompanying that event, God put into motion a plan ….

….that would restore order to man’s chaos and
establish the Word as King of All.
In today’s first reading from the prophet Ezekiel,
this restoration by God is contemplated. Through
a metaphor of sheep, the Divine Plan is expressed.
Yahweh calls Himself the Shephard who will
rescue and gather His flock. Using a metaphor
that His “Chosen People” could easily understand,
Yahweh reveals the depth of
His love for His creation and
His forgiveness Through
Divine Power, He plans to
gather all and provide rest and
pasture for them. God
promises to gather and heal
the sick and to tenderly care
for them. However, the proud
and arrogant he will separate
so as not to contaminate
others. In short, the stubborn
and those who would lead
astray others will be judged and excluded through
this justification and restoration. Mankind will be
secure from any future contamination. The New
Creation will reflect the perfection of the Divine.
This same theme of justification and restoration is
expressed in Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians.
The Apostle to the Gentiles explains that Christ
was raised from the dead as the first of all who
also believe in Him. Paul continues that the
restoration of mankind’s place in God’s Kingdom
is now assured as Jesus became the “first fruit”
through his crucifixion and resurrection. Paul
explains that Jesus will return to complete the
Divine Plan and separate the Good from the Bad
as the ultimate Judge fulfilling God’s promise
related in our first reading. Today’s passage ends
with the proclamation that Jesus is King of All
and, as such, all of creation is subject to Him.
As the Gospel is proclaimed, God’s message is
made clear. Portraying Christ as King and Judge
gives Christians the opportunity to see themselves
as they truly are. The Just Judge has each
individual evaluate their life according to the
Beatitudes – the standards of Christianity. It is this
evaluation that will
determine each individual’s
eternal life. It is a positive
comparison that renders our
verdict. As mankind had been
subject to the Law in the Old
Testament, he, now, is freed
and judged by the standards
embedded in the Beatitudes.
The judgement will be based
upon what we have done and
what we have failed to do. As
members of the Divine
Family and as brothers and sisters of Christ, we
will be judged by our participation in the family’s
responsibility set by the Father. How has one
helped or hindered in restoring order to chaos? If
one’s life has been one of assistance, then the
reward will be great. If, however, one has failed to
lend assistance, or has interfered in some way in
allowing assistance to be given in this restoration,
then one’s separation from God will be
permanent and expulsion from the family
permanent. So, as we finish our liturgical year, we
reflect upon our actions and ask for Divine Mercy
as we prepare, once again, to make another
journey through God’s Redemptive Plan in a new
liturgical year.
