2011-2012 Priorities/Strategies Student Engagement through Differentiated Instructional Strategies – ongoing – this is a K-12 divisional initiative. This year, all students from Gr. 4-12 have completed an individual learner profile. Early Literacy Intervention – ongoing – 0.3 FTE Reading Recovery Teacher, 0.3 Early Literacy teacher. Later Literacy Intervention – ongoing – Teaching Staff up to Gr. 8 are now completing Benchmark assessments for each student. Reading instruction is now a focus up to the end of Gr. 8. Highlights Bullying Survey – As a result of the surveys that were completed in the Spring of 2010 we provided sessions for MY Students on the topics - CFS and Personal Guidance. As well, we brought in Val Caldwell to do a number of sessions on Internet Awareness and Cyber Bullying. Shared Services are used to provide students with Speechm Pathology, and Personal Guidance Counselling. We also maintain regular contact with various support services such as Community Mental Health, Child and Family Services, the RCMP, and the Assiniboine Regional Health Authority. Reading Recovery is a highly effective short-term intervention of one-to-one tutoring for lower-achieving first graders who are not catching on to the complex set of concepts that make reading and writing possible. Students receive a half-hour lesson each school day for 12-20 weeks with a specially trained Reading Recovery Teacher. Early Literacy is a Reading Recovery style diagnostic and remedial reading intervention program. Its goal is to bring struggling readers in the Primary grades up

Page 3: November 22 2012 Newsletter

to their appropriate reading level. It is a daily program that involves small groups of students over a fifteen (15) week period for 30 minutes each day. Music Education is available to all students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. A full Music program is offered to students in Kindergarten to Gr. 6. Optional Band and Jazz programs are offered to students in Gr. 7 to 12. Art Education is available as a full option for students in Gr. 7-12. Art education is offered in all classes from Kindergarten to Gr. 6. Physical Education is taught from Kindergarten to Grade Twelve. Each student receives the equivalent of a minimum of 20 minutes of Physical Education per day. In addition to scheduled gym times, students can elect to participate in extra-curricular sport teams held before and after school. These sports include volleyball, football, rugby, fastball, hockey, curling, badminton, track, and cross-country. High School includes Grades Nine to Twelve. Each of five periods per day are 65 minutes in length. All students in Grades Nine and Ten are in class at all times. Grade Eleven and Twelve students may opt for a spare but they are strongly encouraged not to do so. Our school community cooperates with other high schools across Manitoba to provide students with many course options using Video Conferencing and on-line courses (Moodle). Students graduating from Souris School are able to meet entry requirements for all post-secondary programs in Manitoba, the rest of Canada and the US. The Senior Years Apprenticeship Option is in its ninth year at Souris School. Students who have finished all requirements for Grade Ten are eligible to apply to this program. Students work for a journeyperson at any recognized trade. In

return, students are paid by the employer and receive school credits at the same time. These credits also count towards community college hours if the student continues to pursue this trade. CTS Option - Career and Technology Studies - CTS is a strategy that has been developed in partnership with three other school divisions (Prairie Rose, Prairie Spirit and Turtle Mountain) enabling students in Southwest Horizon School Division to access Senior Years Technology Education options. CTS provides the framework that enables students to study school based courses and enhance his/her learning outcomes by participating in a Career Internship Placement. This program allows students to do the theory part of a course in school and the practical part at a career placement site. Southwest Horizon School Division has four approved Senior Years Technology Education Programs (Industrial Arts, Agriculture, Business Ed and Marketing, Energy Production Technology). For more information please go to the Southwest Horizon School Division website. It is located under the “Programs” tab. The following 4 articles were to be in the last newsletter – sorry they were missed. CONGRATULATIONS MS. BIRCH

STUDY MANITOBA NEWS Study Manitoba is pleased to introduce Bob Young as Homestay Coordinator for Southwest Horizon School Division. You may know Bob as the former Principal of

Souris School. He and wife, Rhonda have four children: Travis, Jolene, Becky and Brett. Over his teaching career, Bob taught at Juniper and Deerwood Schools before moving to Souris in 1988. Bob was a school administrator for 23 years before taking on the role of Coordinator of Career Technology in the 2011-2012 school year. In addition to that role, he is looking forward to working with Study Manitoba to recruit homestay families for international students who wish to study in Southwestern Manitoba. To find out more about hosting a student for one of the upcoming programs, please contact Bob at [email protected]. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Once again Souris School is taking part in Operation Christmas Child. Boxes are available in front of the office. Please remember to pick up a tag along with the box, that specifies if it is for a boy or girl and the age of the child. If you do not want to fill a shoe box, you may bring individual articles and drop them off at the school and we will forward them, along with the boxes. Some things you can fill your shoe boxes with are school supplies, hygiene items, toys and other gifts. Do Not Include: decks of standard playing cards, food and any chewy, crumbly, or soft

Page 5: November 22 2012 Newsletter

candy (including gum, due to customs regulations), used items (due to custom regulations), toothpaste (due to custom regulations), liquids or items that could leak, melt, freeze or break (shampoo, creams, lip balm, bath gels, mirrors, or glass etc. as these can damage other items in the shoe box), items that can scare or harm a child (war-related toys, knives and toy guns, etc.). Boxes are to be at Souris School by Monday, November 26th to be shipped out on November 27th. CAMPBELL’S SOUP “LABELS FOR EDUCATION” This program is now in it’s 15th year across Canada, and Souris School started collecting labels way back in 1999. This is still a worthwhile and active project with another 39,662 points deposited November 5th. Each label is now only worth 1 point so that is a lot of labels! There are enough points banked, so the teachers can now select and order some equipment for the students to use at recess or in the classroom. THANK YOU to everyone who clips and saves those labels and UPC codes. If you use these products then save those labels – Campbell’s Condensed soup, Chunky soup, Broth, Ramen Hearty Noodles, Ramen Hearty Noodles, Ready to serve soup, Habitant, Gardennay, Soup at Hand, V8Soups, Easy cooking sauces along with Prego sauce, V8 Splash/Fusion, Pace Salsa, Goldfish crackers. Collection bins are at the school, Big Way and Robbins Fine Foods. It seems like a lot of work but the labels would be just heading to the garbage anyways. The school appreciates everyone that has supported this program, so keep on saving those labels. Remember, both the label and UPC are needed. •Glenda McConnell Always be a little kinder than necessary.
