    Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Grateful hearts, happy times, and a deep sense of belonging. Your involvement has created this beautiful feeling at LanakilaSenior Center. We are very thankful for your love, friendship, and kindness throughout the years.

There were over 250 volunteers and service organizations who helped our senior center this past year. We were not able to honor and thank them at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Day. We would like our volunteers to know how very appreciative we are for your donation of time and resources as receptionists, front desk volunteers, thrift shop and concession organizersand donors, kitchen volunteers, sound system and garden volunteers, entertainers, special event volunteers, guest speakers, instructors, assistant instructors, cultural club officers, interpreters, translators, special event booth participants, producers of critical personal protection equipment (PPEs), facility improvement volunteers, researchers, food box and fundraising event volunteers, and so much more. Our deepest appreciation to all of you.

Thanks to our many community partners, this past month was filled with many interesting virtual learning opportunities as well as activities to keep healthy, socialize with one another, and contribute to the broader community. LMPSC staff has continuedto make friendly phone calls to over 1,400 members so far and will continue to do so to make sure that our seniors are doing okay.

We are grateful to all our center members for a very successful Annual Donation Drive. Through your participation and generous hearts, we raised over $13,000and we still receiving more donations.

Mahalo nui loa to the many senior center members and friends for being a part of the Savers FUNraiserheld on October 21, 2020. We were overwhelmed with the amount of clothing and household goods that were delivered to the senior center in an hour’s time. The collection of donated items generated an additional cash donation from Savers, which will also be saved for operational expenses as we enter a financially lean new year.

In November, there are many great things planned, so please check out the calendar in this newsletter.

If you know of anyone in need of any assistive devices, adult diapers or face masks, through the generosity of others, we do have a supply of these items that we would be happy to share with our center members and others in the community. Please call 847-1322 for further assistance.

There have been many people contacting us wanting to know how they can participate in the online classes we offer. Anyone 60 years and older, who is a resident of Oahu, can become a member by filling out our membership form. Membership is free. Please contact Membership Specialist Iris Hiramoto for more information. You may also go to www.catholiccharitieshawaii.org, click on Senior Programs, click on LanakilaMulti-Purpose Senior Center, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Current Newsletter. You will see what online classes and presentations are available each month as well as peruse about 4 year’s-worth of newsletters to get an idea of the types of activities LMSPC has hosted in the past.

We hope you enjoy this newsletter and it brings smiles, giggles, and a nice warm feelings to all of you. Thank you for supporting LanakilaSenior Center, our kupuna, and our families.

We wish you a blessed Thanksgiving, Cookie Irvine, Iris Hiramoto, Lodi Tapawan, Riva Torno, and Susie Chun Oakland

    Chibariyaa!

Thanksgiving is a time to gather around your loved ones and friends, to be grateful for all that we have so abundantly blessed with. When the coronavirus pandemic began, itaffected our lives. We cannot interact with others, but we can do a virtual party, showing pictures or videos, so Be Kind, Be Thoughtful and Be Thankful for everything.

“Chibariyaa” (together we will stay strong).“HAPPYTHANKSGIVING “

    By Diana Kawaguchi

During our homestay the months go by quickly. Now it is November and Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a day dedicated to giving thanks to God, and for the many things we often take for granted. With our current situation of the covid19 crisis, many of us may, or may not have our usual customary family gatherings. Regardless of this, there is an Okinawan proverb “Yaasadu masa” we should all be thankful for what we have. “Kafuushi” (Gratitude), for our family, loved ones and our good health. In regards to our good health, I would like to share some excerpts from the book “Ikigai”-The art of staying young while growing old by Hector Garcia & FrancescMiralles. Ikigaiis the Japanese secret to a long and happy life. This book tells of the Village of Ogimi, a rural town on the north end of Okinawa, with a population of 3,000 that boasts the highest life expectancy in the world. A fact that has earned this village of Ogimithe nickname “the village of Longevity.” Ogimivillage holds the Guinness record for longevity. A woman who was about to turn 100 years old sang this following song:“To keep healthy and have a long life, eat just a little of everything with relish.Go to bed early, get up early, and then go for a walk.We live each day with serenity, and we enjoy the journey. To keep healthy, and have a long life, we get on well with all our friends.Spring, summer, fall, and winter, we happily enjoy the seasons. The secret is to not get distracted by how our old fingers are; from the fingers to the head, and back once again. If you keep moving with your fingers working, 100 years will come to you!”

We wish all of you a very blessed, and happy Thanksgiving.

    JAPANESE CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE

    By Mary Sueda

On this momentous month of November, when celebrating Thanksgiving is in the hearts and mind of all of us, we extend our appreciation to all of you who have supported us, spiritually, emotionally as well as financially. By being there for us each week, we were able, together, to perpetuate and preserve the Japanese culture and customs. We are also so thankful to have the privilege to honor the memory of all our members of Japanese Cultural Club who are no longer here with us, but who gave themselves for the betterment of the club. They are here with us in spirit and paved the way for us to continue to pass this legacy on the next generation. For this, we are truly grateful. Looking back over more than 50 years, our club is what it is today because of the solid foundation it was built upon by those who came before us. We thank you and pray for your continued guidance as we move forward.
