Rebecca’s Volunteer Corner Hello Volunteers!

I had the opportunity to attend the annual Colorado Conference on Volunteerism last month and learned a great deal. I do hope to incorporate some new ideas into our volunteer program at Kavod. From the Pet Club We Give Thanks By CJ.S. November with its special day of Thanksgiving. For pet owners, giving thanks for their pet is, if not their number one blessing, very close to the top. To help understand why, rather than talk about one pet, I'd like to share some of the answers to the one question asked at all 59 interviews done so far.

What does your animal mean to you?

"My cat's favorite toy is me." "She is a reason to function." "I feel better." "She means life." "She saved my life, the car would've hit me." "She's everything to me." "Life is so much better." "We are best buds." "He's special, spunky, and goofy. We are best friends." "She's my child, my family." "She is a yenta." "She is my lucky charm at bingo." "He's the best dog." "Without him I would've never gotten through my move here." "After my son died, I never would've made it through without her." "They give unconditional love."

So past, present, or future, whether your animal is sitting beside you now or lives on in your heart, it's nice to have a special day to give thanks.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! WAIT, I'm hearing lots of barks and meows. Oh it's a chorus of "a piece of turkey would be nice."

SRC (Senior Resource Center) Transportation Call Center Phone: 303-235-6972 Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4 pm

Rides can be requested for any purpose, allowing riders to travel independently to medical/dental appointments, grocery shopping, congregate noon meals, or community based care programs. You can also take personal trips such as to the beauty shop, bank, visiting a friend, etc., (within 10 miles of the resident address). A rider can take three round trips per week with exceptions made for medical reasons. Donations are accepted for this service. A resident must be over the age of 60. Persons under 60 who have a mobility impairment can also request service. Please make ride requests 3 - 7 business days in advance whenever possible. Shorter notice requests can be made including the day of the request (such as a medical follow-up) but it is a first call/first serve situation. Some trips that occur regularly (i.e. shopping, going to dialysis) can be placed into a subscription service so you don't need to call each week. Advance notice helps build efficient routing since this is a shared ride system. Always remember to call SRC Transportation if you need to

A brief Dvar Torah connects ideas about the sanctity of human life, for example, embedded in the day’s Torah reading (in Genesis 9), and review health considerations. Guest curated by Dr. Jeanne Abrams from the University of Denver Libraries’ Beck Archives, A Legacy of Healing is the story of the Jewish community’s role in revolutionizing our state’s health care in the late 19th and early 20th century. Learn about the leading tuberculosis treatments of the 1900s and see rare film footage, photographs and medical tools from Denver’s top tuberculosis sanatoriums; National Jewish Hospital and the Jewish Consumptives’ Relief Society.
