Last year I wrote an article about Nebraska’s AQuESTT school classification process. There are four classification categories: Excellent, Great, Good and Needs Improvement. Cody-Kilgore, as a District, ranked Great, which is something we all can be proud of. Our teachers and staff work extremely hard every day to provide students with the best learning environment, and this “ranking” is another way to show the great things that we are doing here at CKUS.
Even though as a district we are classified as Great, each building also receives a separate classification. Our High School is classified as Great, our Middle School as Excellent and our Elementary has a classification of Good. These classifications are based primarily on state assessment scores. As stated in last year’s article, we noticed our scores dropping at the elementary level, which is why we spent a year researching different ELA curriculum and finally investing in one that we felt would benefit our students best. The state of Nebraska has updated their standards and the assessment tool (NSCAS test). Unfortunately our curriculum has been traditionally outdated, which is reflected in our scores.
This will be the first year of implementation of our new ELA curriculum at the elementary. We are now beginning to study our math curriculum, how it lines up with state standards and beginning the process of evaluating, researching and eventually adopting a cohesive math curriculum that aligns with state standards.
Even though we have seen a slight decline in our elementary scores, our high school ACT scores have gone up. Two years ago the state decided to make all Juniors take the ACT, which affected every school’s ACT composite score as college bound and non-college bound students were now required to take the test. Cody-Kilgore continues to be above the state average ACT composite score (20.0) with a 22.3.
I am extremely proud of our staff and the work that they put in. We are constantly collecting data, studying it, and making informed decisions to help move our district forward. With this type of strategic planning in place, Cody-Kilgore will continue to build on its already excellent academic achievements.

During the 2016-2017 school year, Cody-Kilgore Unified schools implemented the Beef in Schools program. The purpose for the program is to provide fresh meat for students using locally raised beef instead of government commodities beef, which doesn’t taste as good or have the same nutritional value.
We have been very fortunate to have some community members already donate a cow to the school district. Through their generosity, our students have been eating locally raised beef for lunch.
We always need beef donations to continue the program. If you would like to participate in this program, please review the “Things to Consider for Beef Donors” below and don’t hesitate to call Mr. Lambert at school with any questions.
If you are not able to donate the entire beef, but are willing to sell it for a good price, we would also like that information because there are families who don’t have direct access to a ranch but who would consider a financial donation such as purchasing the cow to donate to the school.
Things to Consider for Beef Donors:
1. The beef doesn’t have to be your prized cow. If you have a cow that wouldn’t do as well at the sale barn, that would be the cow to consider.2. The animal only needs to be corn fed for 30 days. ALL of the meat will be turned into ground beef, so we are not looking for choice cows.3. The animal needs to be strong enough to be transported and walk into the FDA approved butcher in Omaha, so if you have a cow that couldn’t make that trip, then it can’t be used.4. Your contribution may be excludable from your gross income and have potential tax savings that exceed the normal charitable contribution. Talk to your tax advisor if you need more information.5. You cannot donate already processed beef. The beef has to go through Husker Meats in Ainsworth as they are approved by the state of Nebraska to take school districts through this process.
The Process:1. If you are ready to donate now or considering donating in the future, call Mr. Lambert at the High School to make arrangements.2. The cow will need to be delivered to Husker Meats in Ainsworth, Nebraska, and they will take care of everything from there.
If you have any interest in this program or other creative ideas to keep the program going, please don’t hesitate to contact Mr. Lambert. Thanks for your consideration.

On November 5th, 2019 in the Cody High School Gym, there will be a town hall meeting concerning all of the infrastructure needs of the district. Over the past couple months, a committee of 10 (2 Kilgore representatives, 2 Cody representatives, 2 teachers, 3 board members and 1 administrator) have worked with an architect to develop a plan that would solve a lot of the infrastructure needs found in our facility audit conducted two years ago. We would like all property owners to attend this town hall meeting so that they can receive all of the information gathered. You will see architectural plans, potential cost savings and tax impact.

New Kitchen!
Circle C MarketMiss having a charge account? We may have a solution. The Circle C Market has gift/store cards. The cards are used exactly like a credit or debit card, but with no usage fee to the store if purchased with cash or check. Any amount for $20.00 or more is available and the card is rechargeable.
The store will continue to offer paper gift certificates for less than $20.00, as well as the F’real and hot beverage certificates that can be purchased for Secret Pal, birthdays, or just as a token of appreciation for someone.
If you haven’t stopped at the store for a while, now would be a great time to check us out. We’ve undertaken a few projects and changed some things all to provide a better shopping experience for you.

The White Elephant Hall has a new kitchen! The kitchen needs your donations of gently used plates, and eating, cooking and serving utensils.

The Pre-K through 2nd grades loaded the Cody-Kilgore coach bus and travelled to Seneca, NE to go check out Stable Productions Exotic Animal Ranch. The students were excited to feed the camel, sheep, goats and zebras. They saw reindeer, a kangaroo, talking parrots, and many other animals. They took the trip as their Kick-off activity for Unit 2 in the new reading program. According to 2nd grader Payton Burress, her favorite thing about the day was seeing the Scottish Highland calf. Kindergartner, Finnegan Moreland said seeing the zebras were his favorite thing about the day. T.C. Ford (1st Grade) said his favorite thing to see was the water buffalo! Pre-K student, Bristol Ford said, “My favorite part of the field trip was the zebra. I like their stripes!” Flip and his crew were very knowledgeable about all the animals on the ranch and the weather was beautiful. Just a great experience all around!

Veterans Day

Everyone Welcome, help us honor our Veterans.
Dear Families,
The Box Tops for Education program is changing the way we can earn cash for our school!
Over the summer, participating brands have begun to change their packaging from the traditional Box Tops clip to the new Box Tops label.
Going forward, instead of clipping from packages and checking expiration dates, all Box Tops will be earned digitally by scanning your receipt. The Box Tops for Education team has worked hard to build a NEW-and-improved, user-friendly Box Tops mobile app, available now.
The new app features state-of-the-art technology that allows you to scan your store receipt, find participating products and instantly add Box Tops to our school's earnings online.
If you still have traditional Box Tops clips at home, make sure to send them to school. We will still earn cash for all clipped Box Tops until they expire. Better yet, you can “double dip” during the packaging transition by clipping traditional Box Tops AND scanning your store receipt containing participating products.
Thanks for helping our school get what it needs!
BE SURE TO DOWNLOAD THE NEW APP OR UPDATE YOUR EXISTING APP:

“Why would anyone want to run that far?” -anyone ever
Although this team is small(of only three runners), each athlete leaves a lasting impression on the runners and bystanders after competing at every meet. The only senior on the team, Nicklas Olson, started running as a Freshman and has become a strong individual. He has improved his time every meet-not to mention, he medaled at Conference this year, in which they only awarded the top five runners.
Sadie Vander Wey, a new-comer to the sport, did not know what to expect when the team arrived at their first meet, but she became a conditioned runner throughout the year. Her dedication showed in her times, as they improved every meet. She learned how to run the Vander Way..
As a returning runner, Emmalea Olson has almost completed her second season of Cross Country. After all the ups and downs throughout the year, she will be returning to state in Kearney on October 25th.
Good Job Sadie and Nicklas, and Good Luck Emmalea!
