November 2018
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Thanks to the generosity and caring nature of the staff at Byng Public School, we are able to offer
our students many extracurricular activities throughout the school year. As a staff we are all focused on developing the leadership qualities of our students. It is exciting to see so many of our Broncos involved in the wide variety of clubs and teams being offered. Clubs and teams give students an
opportunity to work together for a common goal. Belonging to a team or club also gives students an opportunity to strengthen their leadership skills.
Progress Reports will be sent home with SK-6 students on November 16th.
Parents/Guardians are encouraged to discuss this report with their child. Learning Skills are an es-pecially important part, as these are the skills that help students learn.
On behalf of Byng’s school community, I would like to thank the parents, guardians and community members who dedicated their time to support the 2017-2018 school council: Janet Forster and Dan-
ielle Allen, Co-Chairs, Kerry Dowdall, Secretary/Treasurer, Marion Spellman, Community Repre-sentative, and Janine Newell and Ali Bucknell, Council Members.

Bus cancellation information reminder All information regarding cancelled buses in
Simcoe County is posted on the Simcoe
County Student Transportation Consortium’s
bus information website at
www.simcoecountyschoolbus.ca. Our school
is in the WEST zone. When buses are can-
celled, schools remain open for student
learning, unless otherwise noted.
The Consortium and bus operators try to
make the decision to can-
cel school buses before 6
a.m. and make every effort
to post announcements
before 7 a.m. Inclement
weather cancellations are
effective for the whole day and buses can-
celled in the morning will not run at the end
of the day. You can follow the Consortium on
Twitter @SCSTC_SchoolBus for bus cancel-
lations and other information. You can also
subscribe to receive bus delay notifications
here: https://scstc.ca/Subscriptions
For school event cancellations in case of in-
clement weather, listen to your local radio
station for event cancellation information.
Student Pick Up Arrangements
If an emergency arises and you need to change your child’s pick up routine, contact the office before 2:00 pm. This is to allow enough time to make sure your child is aware of the change.
Treaties Recognition Week takes place
Nov. 5 to 9
Did you know we are ALL treaty people?
Treaties Recognition Week is the first week of
November every year - this year it’s Nov. 5 to
9. The Simcoe County District School Board
is located on territory covered by several pre-
confederation treaties - Treaty 5, 16, 18, 19
and 82, as well as the 1923 William’s Treaty.
Treaties Recognition Week was introduced in
2016 to honour the importance of treaties and
to help Ontarians learn more about treaty
rights and treaty relationships. Take some
time this week to learn about the treaty in your
area. To learn more about the treaties and
how we can honour them, visit
www.ontario.ca/page/treaties.
Remembrance Day - November 9th On Friday, November 9th, the staff and students of Byng will be participating in a Remembrance Day assembly at 10:55 AM in our school gym. Glee will make their first appear-ance at this assembly. Please consider sending a small donation to school with your child to support our veter-ans.
Student Led Conferences Conferences will take place during the week of November 19th. If you haven’t already done so, please come into the main office or contact Mrs. Eskra to book an appointment.
These conferences should include your child who will share samples of their schoolwork. Please plan to visit all of your child’s teachers including French, planning time, special edu-cation, and/or teacher librarian.
We look forward to this opportunity to meeting with you and discussing your child’s academic achievement and learning skills.

Safe water in our school
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, along with the Ministry of the Environment, Con-servation and Parks, works with local school boards in their efforts to ensure children are pro-tected from unnecessary exposure to lead from drinking water. All schools are required to flush their plumbing regularly and sample their water to test for lead. Samples must be collected at every tap that provides drinking water or that is used to prepare food or drink for children under the age of 18. Schools are required to test both standing (water that has been sitting in the distribution lines) and flushed water (water which has run through the lines) for lead on a regular basis (e.g. annual-ly). Flushing has been shown to reduce lead levels in water and is a recognized lead reduction strategy. If a school’s drinking water test result is above the provincial drinking water standard for lead, the schools communicate these results to the local Medical Officer of Health and the Ministry of the Environment Conservation and Parks to ensure corrective actions are carried out and the problem is re-solved.
DENTAL SCREENING PROGRAM The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit Oral Health team will be at our
school on Wednesday November 7th , 2018 to conduct dental screenings. A
dental screening is a quick look in the mouth using a sterilized tooth mirror.
Don’t forget to look for the information letter from the health unit, which will
be coming home with your child.
