Volunteer OrientationBy Alice Hyer, Volunteer Coordinator

Calling all current and prospective volunteers in our community! We will be holding our second annual Volunteer Orientation, Wednesday, November 8th at 1:00 pm in the Auditorium.

Please plan to attend if you are a current or pro-spective volunteer for any of the following: Table and Chairs Crew, HOA Office, HOA Food Events, HOA Events Ushering, Christmas Decorating Crew, Dance Committee, Audio Visual Crew, and/or any other areas you would be willing to volunteer.

A heartfelt thank you to all of you who have done a great job of helping in the community.

Compliance CornerBy Kathy Fowers, Office Coordinator

Traffic RevisionA warm welcome to road weary travelers return-

ing from adventures near and far. As you settle into the community, you’ll notice construction crews have been busy both within the community and in nearby commercial areas. This summer there was a traffic control change at the intersection of Spring-wood Blvd. and Guadalupe Road, where Guadalupe is now a through street rather than an all-way stop.

In conversations with the City of Mesa, we were informed that Guadalupe is an arterial road, and the only reason there was ever a stop sign there was because Guadalupe Road previously dead-ended. You will notice as you drive Guadalupe Road this side of Signal Butte, that there are no other 4-way stop signs. Although this requires an adjustment for drivers, this intersection at Guadalupe and Spring-wood does not fit the federal guidelines for a stop sign anymore because the road is now open.

We do understand the importance of continued awareness. It is not a guarantee, but we have re-quested the temporary "traffic change" signs remain for an extended time period, hopefully long enough for all of our winter residents to return and see them. Please use caution at this intersection while everyone adjusts to the change. On all roads in the commu-nity, please abide by the speed limits and ensure a complete stop at stop signs.

Since we’re on the topic of driving on the roads, may we kindly remind residents that golf carts are to follow the rules of the road: the carts need to be licensed and insured, should be driven in the lane of traffic rather than in the bike lane, and unlicensed drivers are not permitted by law…this includes your adorable grandchildren.

To all our residents, we wish you a safe and happy fall, and look forward to seeing you at the many fun events planned here in the community. If you have questions regarding architectural changes and or compliance concerns, please feel free to con-tact me. [email protected]

[email protected] Happy October! I love this time of year in

Arizona when we start anticipating cooler weather. Visions of hot chocolate and spirits by a fireplace, comfy sweaters, a favorite pair of boots and my favorite…the leaves changing colors. It seems impossible to imagine, given the hot tempera-tures we’ve endured. Here’s just a few of our summer projects that kept us busy: Springwood Fitness Center Upgrades (wall/ceiling repairs, led lighting, carpet, fresh paint, TV’s, thermostats, new sanitizing system & fitness cable manage-ment), Springwood Pool Area (fresh paint, new light fixtures/lighting, new pool furniture on order, tile floors cleaned, deck repair), Springwood Auditorium (front lobby, bathroom, green room, and lighting upgrades, wood floor refinishing, an-nual kitchen maintenance/floor resurfacing), San Tan Center (fresh paint in pool area & pool fence, fitness center repairs), Landscape Replenishment (granite & plants), Perimeter Wall Maintenance (painted Springwood monument & tower), HOA Center (planter box updates, floor refinishing), HOA Office (documenta-

tion revision, FirstService Residential website updates, procedure guide updates, community manager manual updates), Vendor Changes for Cost Savings/Better Service (propane, janitorial, recycling). I hope you had a wonderful summer and that you’re gearing up for our busy season that we’ve packed full of events you’ll enjoy! Please visit our website for a calendar of FUN: www.ssvhoa.com. If you prefer, you may pick up a printed copy in the HOA office. Beginning October 1st, our HOA office hours will be 9:00AM to 3:00PM. Coffee Time moves to our Springwood auditorium every Tuesday morning at 9:00AM. Please join us for an opportunity to meet new friends/neighbors and learn about upcoming events. We’re pleased to have our residents returning home for the cooler months. Come in and say “hello.” We’ve missed you! If you have a maintenance emergency after hours, please contact our FirstService Residential Customer Care Center at 480-551-4300. We feel honored to be a part of this beautiful community! Please let us know how we may better serve you. Have an amazing month!

Around the VillageJoin us at Springs Chapel

Everyone is welcome to join in the Christian non-denomina-tional Sunday service of Springs Chapel held in the Springwood Auditorium at 9:00 A.M. Pastors Anthony Bryant and Lanny Barringer serve as our Ministers. The weekly bulletin details the

service and we celebrate with organ and piano music during the service. Following the service there is fellowship with coffee and donuts. Please feel welcomed to join us!

Springs Chapel will sponsor a MOVIE NIGHT on Monday, November 6th at 5:30 PM in the San Tan Center. We will be showing WAR ROOM. Admission is free, we just request that you sign up in the Activity Office so we have a count to plan for refreshments and chair set up. Hope you can join us for an evening of fellowship.

Interdenominational Community Bible Study

The first meeting of the Interdenominational Community Bible Study for the fall-winter season will be Friday, November 3rd at 9

a.m. in the Springs Card Room. The Study is open to all men and women who wish to attend. Study leader is Pastor Tom Weitzel, a SSV resident.

Pastor Weitzel has chosen as his theme for this season’s study “Lessons on Christian Living from a Fisherman” based on text contained in 1 Peter. In light of the unprecedented division and polarization in our country today, 1 Peter is a very relevant study since the book contains a number of important themes for followers of Christ, such as appreciating our salvation rather than taking it for granted, prac-ticing holiness without developing a prideful attitude, living in the world without being tainted by it, emulating Christ’s sacrificial lifestyle so it becomes our own, and growing through our sufferings rather than being defeated by them. 1 Peter reveals much about what God is like and it is also an intensely practical book that teaches us to grow and change in positive ways.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend the study. For information contact Ardella Burtman at 480.993.3102.

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15

Adopt a Street CleanupPlease join us on November 4th at 7:00 a.m. to help with the

cleanup of Baseline Road from Barro’s Pizza east to Meridian Road. We will meet in front of the Library for sign-up and instruc-tions. Safety vests, bags and gloves are provided. We expect that

it will take one to two hours to complete this task. You may contact Paul or Elaine Bussone at 970-456-7052 if you have questions. Thank you.

Brinton School NewsThe students at Brinton School, need your help. The nurses need T-shirts, shorts, socks and underwear so students can change when they fall or spill on themselves. If you buy any of these items, bring it to the activity office and I will deliver it to the school.

Size 5 to 10, please. Crew or ankle socks, plain shirts, please. Brinton School sends a big thank you to everyone who has deposited education labels in the container at SSV activity center. The school mails the labels and receives ten cents for each one so it is a big help to all students. Look on General Mills cereal, cookie, cake, muffin mixes, crackers, kleenex and other items. Cut the pink label on the dotted lines, please.

The school has other projects too, one is a fund to install a poured-in ground up recycled rubber surface to replace the sand and gravel playground for the Kindergarten play area. Donations may be made to that special fund.

Campbell soup labels no longer useable. The program has been discontinued by Campbells.

Thank you for your help. Donna Stelter, sponsored by Mary Tasio writing class

In order to have a Weight Watchers group here again we must have 20 paying members, this will be a requirement on November 8th or we will not be able to have Weight Watchers here this Fall/Winter. If you are a returning member who has NOT yet made Lifetime, please plan to attend this meeting. Our regular meetings will begin the following Wednesday November 15th.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE, MEETING TIMES HAVE CHANGED!!

WE WILL HAVE WEIGH IN AT 8:00 AM ; MEETING AT 8:30 AND END PROMPTLY AT 9:00 AM

Meeting will be held in the San Tan Center each week.

The cost of the 12 week session will be a prepayment of $156 or a monthly pass of $52 per month . If you are an existing member of Weight Watchers and just want to start attending the meetings here just bring you current card and monthly pass with you to the meeting.

I need to hear from you via email, giving us some idea of any many we have that are interested in rejoining or transferring or brand new members wanting to get started on a journey to good health. The Beyond the Scale program is a great approach to losing weight, getting more active and feeling better physically and emotionally. Our SSV group is a great bunch of folks who support each other and “travel” this journey together. We share recipes and encouragements. The success of our last group was over 600 pounds lost!!

If you are interested and would like to attend the orientation meeting please email me you name. As far as knowing more about the WW program feel free to go to WWW.WeightWatchers.com and read all about it.

Contact me via email at [email protected]

Village VoicesThe Village Voices will present

their annual Christmas Concert in the Auditorium on Sunday, December

10, at 3 PM and 7 PM. Tickets will go on sale in the Activity Office this month and are $5.00 each. As in past years, half of the proceeds from this concert will go to the Apache Junction Food Bank. Last year we were able to give them $1,600 which was well received.

Rehearsals for our concert began on October 2. We practice twice weekly for a total of 20 rehearsals, so we work hard and fast to get our music prepared. This year’s concert has something for everyone: some standard Christmas songs, some fun variations on familiar songs, and several numbers from The Messiah. We thank Sylvia Hansen for helping us out at the piano until Cheri Mabbit comes for the last four weeks of rehearsal.

Our chorus was able to purchase some pie-shaped risers this year that will allow us to be in a more rounded set-up for singing. We will also have new steps to the top row of risers purchased with memorial money for Loretta Barringer, wife of Lanny Barringer who is one of the pastors for Springs Chapel. We are anxious to be able to use this new set-up.

We hope you will plan to attend our concert and make it a part of your Christmas celebration.

worldwide. When they see a need in their community, they fill it.

• LIONS distribute dictionaries to third graders.

• LIONS in Maricopa packed boxes of food for Feed My Children, providing more than 8,000 meals for children in North Korea.

Locally, we do eye testing. So far this fall we have vision screened 1,553 students. Of these 211 needed additional testing by a doctor (personally, 3 kids in the kindergarten I work with have new glasses. What a blessing to help these kids!) We also assisted Apache Junction and Gold Canyon Lions clubs. We volunteer at Brinton Elementary, work at the food bank, volunteer at Ronald McDonald House in Mesa. AZ Lions support Camp Tatiyee in Pinetop/Lakeside. This camp provides, free of charge, camp to disabled children during the summer.

Lions International’s goal is to serve 200,000,000 people a year! Wow!

The community yard sale is November 18 and Lions will provide collection bins for the things you would like to donate. Sunshine Acres will pick up. Receipts available.

We meet the first and third Thursdays at 9:00 a.m. in the Springs card room, September - May. COME JOIN US!

Shuffleboard ClubBy Betty Frechin

Welcome back everyone. We hope everyone had a healthy, enjoyable summer.

Our regular play is on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays with a start time of 9:00 A.M. Be at the boards no later than 8:45 A.M. so that play can be organized and ready to go by 9:00 A.M. Boards 1,2,3 & 4 were totally refurbished this year, thanks to the HOA for the cost. Membership fees remain at $20 per person. Ron Worton will be collecting. Remember that you must be a member to play in out of park tournaments and leagues.

If you are new to SSV or have not played before, come to the boards on one of our play days. Our members will be pleased to get you started. The Club has all the needed equipment available for use. If you prefer, start by coming to our Welcome Back Party on Saturday, November 11 at 5 P.M. in the San Tan Room.

Some out of park dates to remember this month are: Western Tournament from November 6 to 11, Good Life Singles Tournament from November 14 to 16, VDO Split Singles Tournament from November 20 to 22, and the CanAm Mixed Doubles Tournament at Golden Vista from November 27 to 30. We encourage members to participate in these events. Out of park leagues will start in late November. The District 4 Fall Meeting is on November 18 at @ 2:00 P.M. at Rock Shadows.

SSV will be one of the host venues for the upcoming Western Tournament, therefore, we will need several volunteers to clean & wax the boards each day from November 6 through 11.

Saturday, December 9, 2017 is the Christmas party at 5:00 P.M. This gathering will be a pot luck event. Bring your favorite dish to share, and beverage of choice. Turkey will be supplied, and 50/50 tickets will be sold.

Shuffleboard is sponsoring a Casino Bus Trip to Lone Butte and Wild Horse Pass on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 9:00 A.M. and return to SSV at 5:00 P.M. Please arrive at 8:45 A.M. to board the bus in the parking lot by the office. The cost is $10.00 per person, which the casino refunds when you arrive. We are looking forward to a great winter.

Holidaze Craft Fair Nov. 11thBy Karen Unger, TAC Holidaze Craft Committee

Mark your calendar for the 2017 Holidaze Craft Fair! It’s just around the corner on November 11th in the SSV Auditorium. Door open at 8:30 am and the Fair continues until 1 pm.

Hand & FootBy Glenda Beals – [email protected]

Everyone is welcome to stop by and join us in playing a fun card

game called Hand & Foot. This is an open group where everyone is invited

to participate. We welcome new players, men, women, singles and couples. There is no commitment, just play when you want. No money required.

It is a fun card game and easy to learn. There is always someone who will be happy to teach you the game. Initially there is nothing needed. But, later you may wish to bring your own cards plus paper and pencil for keeping score.

We meet in the Springs Card Room at 6:30 pm every Saturday…..all year.

Genealogy ClubBy Lowell Satterlee

The first meeting of the Sunland Springs genealogy club will be on Monday, November 6th, at 7:00 PM in the Superstition room.

At this meeting we will get updates from folks on their summer’s genealogy research. We will also discuss the results of the survey of members, the results from which are helping the steering committee set speakers for this next year. A final item to be discussed is the development of focus groups on Germany, Scandinavia, England, Scotland, Ireland, and other countries of interest to the members.

Since we do not have an outside speaker, we will not collect the $2/member that normally covers our speaker’s costs.

Hiking ClubBy Sue Jenkins, Coordinator

The 2017 - 2018 hikes are posted on the ssvhoa.com website. Please view the hiking information and

schedules on the ssvhoa.com website by going to Activities & Clubs and clicking on the Hiking website link. To the left of the web page, click on the link for the hike/day you are interested in: Mondays (longer hikes organized by John Vick); Tuesday & Fridays (shorter hikes organized by Wilson Allen); and Thursdays (longer hikes organized by Wilson Allen).

The majority of the hikes that we do are in the Superstition Mountains. Hiking in the Superstitions may include some trails or portions of trails that are more difficult than others. We try to include trails that are appropriate for hikers in our general age group, but individuals need to assess their personal abilities and fitness. If in doubt, check with your physician.

All hikes vary by factors such as length of hike, terrain, elevation gain, and whether the hike is a loop or an out and back. Some hikes can be shortened at various turn around points. Weather, especially temperature, needs to be considered before attempting to complete.

Feel free to email me at [email protected] with any questions and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

ClubsBilliards ClubBy Linda Wilson, Secretary

The Billiards Room was busy this summer with many seeking relief from the heat and enjoying the opportunity to

play. It was not unusual to find the room filled with players. We have received many positive comments about the room by guests,

members, new home shoppers and home owners. In the month of August the pool tables were updated with new cloth covering and leveling of the tables. We are lowering electrical costs with the installation of LED lights over all tables. The LEDs were installed in March of 2016 and none have failed in over a year. There is also less heat generated from the lights. We will continue to monitor this update. A big “Thanks” to BINGO for financing this update.

The Friday evening social games for members continued all summer. A great group of volunteers have regularly shown up to clean the equipment and tables.

Fall league meetings will resume shortly and schedules will be posted.Welcome back all members and home owners. Let’s continue to learn and

enjoy the game of pool!

Book ClubBy Judie Beck

The first meeting was held Oct 6th. We had a time for lively conversation about the books we have read over the

summer. Our next meeting will be Friday, November 3rd at 1:30 pm in the

Superstition Room. We will be sharing our perspectives on “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Canadian author, Margaret Atwood. This novel caused quite a stir when it was published in the late 1980’s. The story is equally as compelling for readers today. We will enjoy having some men join us as they certainly will view the book much differently. Please plan on attending even if you have not yet had the opportunity to do the reading.

Softball – Fall LeaguesBy Dave Chase

Senior Softball is big in the East Valley and Sunland Springs has one of the best-kept softball fields around. If you haven’t watched

a game at our field, plan on doing so this season. We have drinks (hot & cold), various chips & cookies for sale and you might even find fresh donuts & hot dogs some days!

And, if you want to play softball, come on down Saturdays and try out – guys and gals are welcome!

There will be games Monday - Thursday starting October 23. Games start at 8 AM most days and continue until at least noon – a complete schedule is on our website, which you can reach by Googleing ssvsoftball. We also post the schedule for all the teams on the Bulletin Board at the field. The Fall Leagues are basically a tune-up for the Winter Leagues but they are some of the more com-petitive leagues in the East Valley. Come on down and cheer your neighbors on!

This fall we have 3 teams – Rebels/Posse, our top-level & 2nd level teams – Rattlers, our 3rd level team and the Coyotes & the Bandits– our 4th level teams – these are mostly the older guys but they certainly can still play! All in all, it makes for some pretty enjoyable fun. We invite you to come down to our beautiful field and watch us!

SSV Men’s Golf LeagueThe SSV Men’s Golf League will hold our semiannual

meeting on November 6th in the San Tan Auditorium at 11:00 after the morning four man scramble. All 139 members of the 2017 League are invited to attend the meeting, whether

they golf that day or not. Pizza and drinks will be served, the 2018 League Handbook will be given to those paying their League dues for next year, a 50/50 raffle will be offered, and a short business meeting will be held.

Our summer schedule continues with golf every Monday and Wednesday starting at 8:00. League application forms are available in the Pro Shop for anyone interested in joining us. If you have questions about the League, please call League President, Kent (Doc) Bulkley at 480-363-1906.

SSV Couples Golf LeagueSubmitted by Les and Doris Lyster

Most winter residents have now returned to SSV from their summer homes or travels. Members of the SSV Couples Golf League look forward to another winter of golfing with

their friends in Sunland Springs. Our golf games (shotgun starts) are held each Friday at 8:00 a.m., and weekly socials are also Fridays, beginning at 4:45 p.m. in the Auditorium.

The Couples Golf League is a great way to get to know your neighbors and make new friends in the community. Information regarding Couples Golf League is posted on the bulletin board at the Pro Shop. If you are interested in joining the Couples Golf League, our President Couple, Doug and Diane Downs are back from their summer in Wisconsin and would like to hear from you. Doug and Diane can be contacted at [email protected] or (715) 520-2928.

The golf course is in really great shape this fall. We would like to thank Jay Larscheid and all the staff of the Sunland Springs Golf Club for their hard work to improve the golf experience at SSV. Over seeding is completed and by mid-November all 3 nines will be fully operational (no cart path only play). Additional curbing by t-boxes has been added over the summer. To protect our course, we encourage all golfers to keep an appropriate distance from all t-boxes and greens. Also, please remember to repair your divots to keep the greens in great shape.

consultation, call Dr. Sullivan today at 480-507-1993 or visit our website at www.azsmiles.com.

Bernie’s Life Changed in One Day

Bernie Before

Bernie After

Bernie has always loved being around people, but when his dental health faltered, losing one tooth after another, he no longer found joy in crowds. His smile embarrassed him. His luck changed when he met Dr. Sheldon Sullivan, who not only practices, but also teaches dental implants.

“As soon as I found out Dr. Sullivan teaches other dentists how to do implants, I knew he was the man I was looking for,” Bernie said. “He definitely knew his stuff.”

Years ago, Bernie retired to take full-time care of his ailing wife. As time passed and Bernie’s devotion increased, his own health deteriorated. He was diagnosed with diabetes and his teeth began to decay and fall out. His granddaughter had graduated as a dental hygienist and told Bernie about dental implants.

Using X-rays and 3D-scans, Dr. Sullivan was able to provide Bernie with a smile transformation in just one day with minimal discomfort or none at all. On the day of the procedure, Bernie felt good knowing his smile would have a much-improved look, but was surprised with how smooth the procedure went. Even post-op.

“They gave me pain pills afterward and I didn’t need one,” Bernie said. “Not even baby Aspirin. I couldn’t have been happier. They did everything they said and more.”

His new look has given him the confidence to leave the house again and even saved him as much as $3,000 a year on prescribed medications.

“Bad teeth can lead to so many other health problems,” Bernie said. “Since Dr. Sullivan helped meout, I haven’t needed to take all those pills anymore. I’m in my 80s and haven’t felt this good in years.”

“It’s a transformation,” said Dr. Sullivan. “Lives are forever changed in such a positive way. It’s a gift, one I feel so fortunate to be able to give.”

Bernie embraces the company of others again and takes advantage of every mirror he sees, shooting himself a dazzling smile.

SUNLAND VILLAGE EAST Block Watch G.A.I.N. (Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods)

& the EMPTY BOWLS charity event Saturday, November 4, 2017

SVE Auditorium * 8026 E Lakeview Drive, Mesa * 4:30-7:00 p.m. G.A.I.N. (Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods) is a statewide an-nual event designed to encourage Neighborhood Watch programs and bring together com-munities throughout Mesa for a common goal -- to let criminals know that citizens of

Mesa are seriously united in the fight against criminal activity. This is a time to turn on your porch lights, go out into your neighborhood, and get to know your neighbors. The SVE Neighborhood Block Watch Committee will be on hand to provide important information to help keep SVE a safe place to live. A City of Mesa representative will stop in as well.

EMPTY BOWLS—For a $10 donation, take home a one-of-a-kind bowl and help to feed the hun-gry. SVE is celebrating it’s first Empty Bowls event. Choose one of thousands of handcrafted bowls and dine on a simple meal of bread, soup and water or lemonade. All proceeds go directly to the nonprofit Paz de Cristo Community Center, which provides anti-hunger and empowerment support for the East Valley’s homeless, unemployed, working poor and their families. Soup choices are:

Potato Cheese, Clam Chowder and Minestrone
