HIGHLIGHTS

Day 1: Vancouver - SeoulFly from Vancouver to Seoul with Air Canada.Day 2: Seoul (Breakfast / Dinner)Welcome to Korea! Transfer by group transport to hotel, where we meet our guide. In the late afternoon, we set out to explore this fascinating country. Accompanied by our guide, we will take a trip on the modern, efficient subway (the guide will show how to use this form of public transport) to the tsunami-shaped City Hall building. From there we will take a walk to the Myeongdong quarter. This district is the most important shopping and leisure zone in Korea.Day 3: Seoul (Breakfast / Lunch)We will have a tour of the city of Seoul. We will see Changdeokgung Palace, a World Heritage Site formed by a group of palaces inside a large park. Then we will go to Bukchon Hanok Village, a traditional historical neighbourhood with tiny houses. Pay a visit to Gyeongbokgung Palace, an impressive palace that is 600 years old, where we will see the Changing of the Guard ceremony (if scheduled). Visit the War Memorial, an impressive war museum that tells of the different conflicts suffered by Korea during its history. Lastly, we will visit the Trickeye Museum. Free time in the afternoon.Day 4: Seoul - Suwon - Jeonju (Breakfast / Lunch)Our next stop is the city of SUWON, former capital of Korea. After entering the city, we will visit the “toilet house” and the adjacent scatological museum, and admire its famous wall with its fortifications. Then we will go to the summer palace of Hwaseong Haenggung. Before leaving this city, we will stop at the Samsung Innovation Museum to learn about the history of this company. (Note: The visit to the Samsung Innovation Museum is not always guaranteed. If this visit has to be cancelled, we will then visit Samsung D´light in Seoul.) Then we continue to JEONJU, where we will see its fascinating old town (Hanok Village).Day 5: Jeonju - Haeinsa - Busan (Breakfast / Lunch)Our journey takes us to HAEINSA, a Buddhist temple built in 802, which houses the Tripitaka, the most complete collection of Buddhist scriptures, engraved on 80,000 wooden blocks. We will visit the temple and the Tripitaka Museum and then have a vegetarian lunch there. We then go to BUSAN, an extremely modern city in Korea. We will spend some time in the bustling, traditional fish market before embarking on the ferry. We spend the night on the ferry, crossing the Sea of Japan, in double cabins with bathrooms. Note: The itinerary for the night journey may be occasionally modified due to availability or weather conditions.Day 6: Shimonoseki - Iwakuni - Itsukushima - Hiroshima - Takasaki (Dinner)We dock at the port of Shimonoseki (breakfast not included). Then depart for IWAKUNI, a small city where we will stop to admire the beautiful historic Kintai-Kyo Bridge. Continue to Miyajimaguchi where we take a ferry to Miyajima with its Itsukushima shrine dedicated to the guardian of the seas, built partly over the sea. Here we have time to visit the temple, stroll through its attractive centre. Then we continue to HIROSHIMA, sadly famous as the site where the atomic bomb fell in 1945, which destroyed the whole city. We will visit the Peace Memorial Park, the Atomic bomb dome and the Peace Memorial Museum.Day 7: Hiroshima - Matsuyama (Breakfast / Lunch)Today we will take a ferry to Shikoku Island, on a pleasant crossing that lasts two hours and a half and see the many islands that make up Japan. In MATSUYAMA we will take the cable car up to its impressive castle. Afterwards, we will visit ISHITEJI, a beautiful Buddhist temple and a place of pilgrimage. In the late afternoon, we will visit DOGO ONSEN (admission included), a traditional Japanese bath facility built in the 19th century.Day 8: Matsuyama - Kotohira - Takamatsu - Naruto - Tokushima (Breakfast / Lunch)We depart for KOTOHIRA, a Shinto shrine dedicated to the God of sailors and a place of pilgrimage. The shrine stands on Mount Zosu and is reached by climbing 785 steps. Afterwards in TAKAMATSU we will visit RITSURIN, one of the prettiest gardens in Japan. Then, in NARUTO, we cross an impressive bridge over the sea, stopping on the way to admire the construction and walk on its glass floor with the sea 450 metres below us. We then continue to TOKUSHIMA, the home of the most important festival in Japan, with its Awa Odori dances. There we watch a colourful Japanese dance performance (admission included).Day 9: Tokushima - Kobe - Osaka - Mount Koya (Breakfast / Dinner)We set out early along a pretty motorway, crossing huge bridges over the sea. In KOBE we will visit KAWASAKI WORLD, an amazing museum that tells us of the technological prowess of this company. After stopping by in Osaka, we will depart at 1.00pm to visit MOUNT KOYA, one of Japan’s sacred mountains and main centre of Shingon Buddhism. There are 120 shrines and monasteries on this mountain. We will visit Okuno Mausoleum, a spiritual place and an immense cemetery in the wilderness that has more than 200,000 graves. We will also visit Kongobuji temple, built in 1593. (Note: In winter, as it gets dark earlier, we will not have time to enter Kongobuji temple). We will spend this night at a Buddhist monastery. The monks will offer us a Zen meditation session (Ajikan) and vegetarian dinner. There is religious ceremony at the temple early in the morning if you wish to attend it. (Note: We consider the sojourn at the monastery as an experience of great existential value. The rooms at this place are modest, without bathrooms, in the traditional Japanese style with tatamis. Bathrooms are communal.)Day 10: Mount Koya - Kyoto (Breakfast)Japanese breakfast at the temple. Then leave early for KYOTO, to spend the whole day there. Kyoto was the capital of Japan between 794 and 1868 and home to the Imperial Court. During WWII the city was the only major Japanese to escape the bombardments, and so it still preserves its wealth of artistic heritage. The visit includes a trip to one of the most important parts of the city. We will see the marvellous Shinto Shrine of Fushimi Inari, the Imperial Palace and Kinkakuji temple, “the golden pavilion” and its wonderful gardens. Free time before visiting GION, a busy traditional quarter famous for its Geisha. Free time. (Note: If you already visited Kyoto on your circuit, our guide will offer you information and advice on visiting the other parts of the city unaccompanied.)Day 11: Kyoto - Tsumago - Matsumoto (Breakfast / Lunch)We set out for TSUMAGO, passing attractive country scenery on our way. This small village with its wooden houses is one of the prettiest places in Japan. Free time to explore. Then we continue to MATSUMOTO, a tourist city, where we will visit the impressive 16th century castle, known as the “Crow Castle”. Free time to explore this bustling tourist city. (Note: In some tours, we will not sojourn in Matsumoto but in Nagano.)Day 12: Matsumoto - Nagano - Monket Park - Kusatsu - Takasaki (Breakfast / Lunch)Today our journey takes us through the beautiful Japanese Alps. In NAGANO, we will visit Zenkoji temple, where the first Buddhist image of Japan is located. Passengers will have the opportunity to take part in the Gomakuyo ceremony. Then we continue through the mountains to Monkey Park and wander through its forests with their rivers and thermal fountains where colonies of Japanese monkeys live and bathe. Then our journey takes us through beautiful mountain scenery with semi-active volcanoes. KUSATSU is an attractive spa city with a lively main square. Then we can stroll through the city park with its outdoor Onsen. Continue to TAKASAKI, where we settle into our hotel. (NOTE: In autumn, monkey migration is unpredictable as it depends on the abundance of fruit in the mountains. If the monkeys do not go down to the park, it may be closed. In winter, the route may be changed due to weather problems (snow). In such cases we will use other roads and eliminate the visit to the Monkey Park.)Day 13: Takasaki - Nikko - Tokyo (Breakfast)We will climb the hill where Byakui Daikannon is found, a gigantic statue honouring the Goddess of Mercy. Then we carry on to NIKKO, a fantastic town where we will visit the impressive Nikko Toshogu Shrine and the hall of the crying dragon. We will also visit the Taiyuinbyo Mausoleum, set in a peaceful site, followed by a walk near the river, in Kanmangafuchi, under the watchful eye of hundreds of Jizo statues! Free time to visit the city centre before leaving for TOKYO.Day 14: Tokyo (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner)In the morning, we take part in a trip with our guide to see this amazing city, with its hustle and bustle and extremely modern districts that coexist with quiet, peaceful areas. We will pass near the walls and gardens of the Imperial Palace and visit the Shinto shrine dedicated to the Emperor Meiji and his wife. In Yasukuni Jinja shrine we will have the chance to reflect on peace. Passengers who wish to do so can visit the War Museum. We will pass through the district of Akihabara, the icons of Japanese Manga and Anime culture. And then see Kokugikan, the Sumo stadium. We will also visit the Buddhist temple of Sensoji, the oldest and most important temple in Tokyo. Then we will have some free time to visit the traditional commercial district of Asakusa. Free time in the afternoon. In the evening, we will visit this fascinating country by taking a trip on the metro (tickets included) to the Shinjuku district. Shinjuku is one of the most important nightlife districts. The visit includes an ascent to the METROPOLITAN TOWER, which has a wonderful view of the city from the 46th floor.Day 15: Tokyo - Vancouver (Breakfast)After breakfast, transfer to airport and fly back to Vancouver.
