PNAU: PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE
REPORT
How do you follow up ‘Chameleon’, one of radio’s favourite songs from 2016? With a nod to the past and a visit to another dimension, according
to PNAU’s Nick Littlemore. By Elise Ferrari
Speaking to Nick Littlemore from
PNAU, it’s hard not to get caught
up in his energy. His conversation
tumbles from one topic to another
in these rolling waves, sharing vast ideas
and intimate memories with anyone that
cares to listen.
The duo turned trio (thanks to the official
addition of Nick’s younger brother, Sam
Littlemore) have been around the local
Sydney music scene since 1999. But more
recently has come the release of some of
the most infectious music to hit radio’s
airwaves. The nonsensical lyrics of both
‘Wild Strawberries’ in 2007 and ‘Chameleon’
in 2016 were somehow made radio-ready
thanks to catchy beats and general summer
vibes.
Yet it’s his long love affair with radio where
our conversation begins.
When asked about whether or not radio still
has a place for new music by an electronic
artist like himself, he shares an incredible
anecdote from his childhood that really
establishes how he - and in turn his music -
operates.
PNAU
“Radio is something I grew up listening to
and a lot of things I've discovered through
the radio,” he told TMN.
“When I was about 10 or 11, I got my first
cassette deck and I was able to record, so I
would record triple j as I was falling asleep.
And then in the morning, I would listen back
to all the music that was being transmitted
that I didn't hear.”
“I discovered some crazy songs. This New
York performance artist by the name of
Karen Finley, I mean, it was more obscenities
than I'd ever heard in my young life at that
point!”
Littlemore believes that there was a magical
sense to those late-nights, when things
“seemed more taboo” and “you kind of had
to wait, when it would go into Adult Only
territory”.
Not only is there this sense of magic and
wonder that Littlemore brings to his music
today, but he still believes in the power of
radio to deliver unknown music to eager
ears.
‘Chameleon’ made it as far as #4 on the ARIA Singles Chart
Breakthrough single ‘Chameleon’ peaked at #9 on the TMN Hot 100 in January 2017
In the space of three weeks, the track catapulted from #82 to its peak position
It spent four uninterrupted
weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 Australian
Chart.
#1#4
“I think it's really cool, because [radio]
reaches people who didn't realise they were
gonna be reached.
“It's much more directive, even with brand
advertising and all this stuff, where it all
sorts of seamlessly turns up on your page.
But for the most part, it'll be a page that
you're already somewhat interested in,
dance music, or whatever.”
“But on the radio, it could be anything. They
could be playing a Slim Dusty record and
then they play Chameleon or an old Pnau
song, or one of my other bands. I love that.”
“I still get letters and messages from people
hearing Empire [of the Sun] or PNAU many
years after it first came out, and they're so
excited that they found them. Someone
who listens to heavy metal, but this song
came out on the radio and they went, ‘Oh,
it wasn't my style of music, but it really
touched me and now I'm a huge fan’”.
Don’t be mistaken. A love of radio does not
leave Littlemore in the past. Far from it.
While PNAU’s music continues to reference
the warehouse parties Littlemore and
bandmate Peter Mayes used to sneak out
and attend back in high school, it’s more
about being both present, and exploring the
future, in this dimension and beyond.
“I like to come at it, anything, with the music
that I create, I like to have a lot of elements
from the past and from the future and
everything in between.”
“I think, for Pnau, at its best, has always
been a collision of colour and excitement
and exuberance, however that manifests.”
Talking about the new album Changa, due
for release on November 10, Littlemore
notes that the previous album Soft Universe
was far more introspective - a “red herring”
in their musical career - compared to the
upcoming release.
“We're much more celebratory and it just
makes sense. It synchronises well with our
spirit. I'd love to be more intellectual, but
ultimately, when we get in the studio, I'm
like a child that wants to jump and scream
and run around and that's the energy that
we put out that has served us really well and
there's nothing wrong with having a good
time.”
As for the origin of the album’s name,
Changa references an Australian-born
smoking blend that “opens up doors to
other realities”.
“I had the privilege of experiencing in the
right setting. It's been such an enriching
experience to have these sort of waking
dreams and come back from the other side...
To come back with this sort of explosion in
my mind, it felt pertinent in my mind.”
Littlemore may be a wordsmith, but when
asked to summarise the new album in just
five words, he is very precise.
“True hallucinations from mystic
destinations”.
We’ll just have to wait and see what trip
PNAU takes us on next.

AUSTRALIAN SINGLES REPORT
The top four spots on the TMN Hot 100 remain steady for another week. The first sign of movement comes at #5 as P!NK’s ‘What About Us’ climbs one frame as a number of acts drop out of the Top 10.
After peaking at #4 on the Hot 100, Jessica Mauboy’s ‘Fallin’’ is surging back up the chart. It’s at #27 this week, climbing eight frames. Meanwhile, follow-up soundtrack single ‘Then I Met You’ loses traction this week and plummets to #31 from #24.
Inches away from securing another Most Added crown a fortnight ago, Guy Sebastian is cruising at #33 this week with ‘Bloodstone’. Hit stations are doing their part to support the track as are both KIIS stations. Sebastian is surely eyeing another Top 10 appearance, his last being ‘Black & Blue’ in late 2015.
Producer Alan Walker drops new single ‘All Falls Apart’ with a pair of featured appearances from Noah Cyrus and Digital Farm Animals. Walker’s been to the top tier of the Hot 100 before with 2015’s ‘Faded’ peaking at #4.
Melbourne artist Tyron Hapi bursts on to the scene with ‘Anyway’ ft. Mimoza. Although relatively unknown to radio, the 19-year-old has dropped an electro infused banger that is worthy of commercial adds over the coming weeks.
Only two weeks on from ‘Gorgeous’, Taylor Swift drops yet another single off her upcoming album. ‘Call It What You Want’ may not be the primest cut Taylor has to offer, but commercial will be raring to get on board as the album release date edges closer.
Selena Gomez & Marshmello's 'Wolves’ is a real winner taking out Most Added this week. The track saw unanimous adoption across commercial radio in Australia. KIIS, Nova and most of the Hit network added the track on full rotation, while Ash London LIVE and the ACE Radio network were also firm supporters.
Another Universal release - ‘Whatever It Takes’ by Imagine Dragons - crossed the line in second place. The single had similar adds throughout the week, but as so often happens, the lack of support from KIIS cost the song a shot at #1.
Gavin James was a real sleeper this week with ‘Hearts On Fire’. Both KIIS stations adopted the track across the board - one of only two tracks added to the network this week.

Taylor Swift jumps a collective 51 spots on the Hot 100 with new singles ‘...Ready For It’ and ‘Gorgeous’, but the biggest mover on the chart this week was Craig David’s ‘Heartline’ which catapulted 38 frames to #52.
Despite Portugal. The Man’s ‘Feel It Still’ sliding to #8 on the Hot 100, it’s now the most spun track on both the KIIS and Nova networks. Triple M continues its unwavering dedication to U2’s ‘You’re The Best Thing About Me’, while Peking Duk is going nowhere soon on triple j.

AUSTRALIAN & INTERNATIONAL DIGITAL CHARTS
Littering their signature thrash-party attitude over ‘Total Meltdown’, DZ have produced a song that is rambunctious, loud, and undeniably fun. Seeing its first glimmer of light as a riff during pre-production for standalone single ‘Blood On My Leather’ in early 2016, the idea kept popping up according to Parsons: “It took about 6 attempts at a chorus until we came up with what it is now, which is why the lyrics in the chorus have nothing to do with those in the verse. It's a little disjointed lyrically but it’s become a big anthem of the new record and a favourite of ours!”

Hovey Benjamin's 'Send Bobs' is still #1 on this week's Spotify Viral chart, while its predecessor 'Man's Not Hot' by Big Shaq has dropped to #6.
Guy Sebastian’s 'Bloodstone' has jumped one-third of the TMN Hot 100 this week, going from #68 to #33. This comes as no surprise to Shazam who have the track at #7 on their Movers chart this week and #5 on their Future Hits chart.

AUSTRALIAN & ALTERNATIVE ARTISTS
Topping four of the charts this week is Peking Duk, who have managed to keep the #1 spot on the Australian Hot 100 with their track 'Let You Down'. It’s also #1 on the triple j Hit List , #1 on the Shazam Furture Hits chart and #1 on the triple j Spins chart. Not only this, but the track is coming in second on the Alternative Hot 100 to Aussie-duo Hockey Dad. Their song 'Homely Feeling' is this weeks Alternative #1 and is also #3 on the triple j Hit List and triple j Spins chart.
Hayden James recent track 'NUMB' has grown in popularity over the past week coming in at #2 on the triple j Hit List, #4 on the Alternative Hot 100, #6 on the Shazam Future Hits chart, #2 on the AIR Singles chart and the second-most spun track on triple j this week. Could James' track be next to remove Vance Joy from the #1 spot on the AIR charts?
