Dear Parents/Guardians,

During the month of November, we invite our families in again for our American Ed-

ucation Week activities. These will take place during the week of November 13 and

will vary by grade level. See the schedule included in our newsletter, and watch for

information coming home from your child’s teacher. We hope you are able to visit us

and see the great work of your child and their teaching staff!

As we close our first marking period, it’s a good time to also review attendance proce-

dures. It’s important that all of our children arrive to school every day and arrive on

time unless they are sick, there has been a family emergency, or there is a religious hol-

iday. If your student must be absent, please remember to call the attendance line in the

main office (571-434-4581) to report the reason for the absence. It’s always helpful to

have a routine in both the evening before and morning of a school day. Students need to

be in their classrooms ready to learn prior to the 7:50 a.m. tardy bell ringing. By teach-

ing time management habits now, we are helping our students grow their levels of re-

sponsibility which will positively impact them for life. Thank you for working with us

as we help our students to develop, even early in their lives, these personal habits that

will set them up for success!

actividades de la Semana de Educación Americana. Éstos tendrán lugar durante la se-

Al cerrar nuestro primer período de calificación, es un buen momento para revisar tam-

bién los procedimientos de asistencia. Es importante que todos nuestros niños lleguen a

Verbal talent involves a child’s precocity, intensity, and complexity with regard to reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Verbally talented children:

Read well. They read avidly and at more advanced levels than their age peers.

Have advanced vocabularies. Verbally talented children have a prowess with words that is often clearly evident in

their writing and oral language.

Write well. This is often a reflection of their reading experiences. Verbally talented children may write for pleas-

ure, branching into areas of writing not typical of their age peers such as poetry, drama, reviews, and journals.

The behaviors exhibited by verbally talented children reflect passion, depth, and breadth. They choose to read and write

for pleasure, and the outcomes are noticeably more sophisticated than those of others.

Listed below are a few ways parents can help children develop their verbal abilities at home.

Read aloud to them even after they are capable of independent reading.

Create a family environment and time for reading.

Introduce them to the magic of the public library as soon as they are old enough.

Have a collection of books and audio books available in places like the car so that they always have access to them.

Encourage them to broaden their reading selections.

Families of verbally talented children may also want to consider establishing their own reading and writing groups for

those with similar abilities and interests.

COMMON SENSE MEDIA The digital world that our kids are learning and growing up in is incredibly exciting. Through technology, kids have access

to new tools, an incredible range of resources, and stimulating opportunities to participate in the world around them.

At the same time, parenting kids who are immersed in so many different technologies and applications can be daunting.

Our school is already working hard to make sure students cultivate the 21st century skills they need, and we want to bring

you into the conversation about kids’ digital lives. We believe that a joint-effort between parents and teachers is a valuable

way to more fully support our learning community.

Therefore, we encourage you to take a look at the Common Sense Media program.

Common Sense Education is a nationally recognized, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization. Their website provides a collec-

tion of resources, in both English and Spanish, designed to help engage families in the important challenges and choices

kids face online. The resources include things like:

• A Digital Glossary packed with explanations of different platforms and vocabulary kids use when they’re talking

about different apps and behavior

• Reviews to help you find age-appropriate movies, books, apps, TV shows, video games, websites, and music that

you and your kids will love

• Family Tip Sheets with advice on how to handle different challenges

• Digital Dilemmas for you to start authentic conversations at home with your kids about real-life sticky situations

• Family Media Agreements to help you set expectations about media use in the home

We want to promote communication and empower you to guide your kids to be safe, responsible, and respectful participants

Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.

The month of November, when we celebrate Thanksgiving, is a good time to focus on “giving thanks.” Here are a few

simple ways to practice thankfulness with your children:

Ask your children about the highs and lows of their school day. What went well? What went right? Focus on

appreciating the positive!

Thank your child often even if he or she is doing required chores.

Encourage children to send pictures to grandparents, relatives, or friends explaining that they will be grateful and

happy to receive their beautiful artwork.

Generate an attitude of giving. Ask children to select clothes or toys that you might give to children in need or share

with neighbors.

Say “thank you” to spouses and friends in the presence of children and explain why you are grateful.

Being able to appreciate the good in your life can increase happiness and satisfaction with your life. For children especial-

ly, learning how to be thankful can help in the development of interpersonal skills, including the “big” one- empathy.

When we’re thankful for even the small things, we’re thinking of more than just ourselves; we’re thinking about how all of

us have the ability to positively impact another’s life. Gratitude is powerful!
