November 2017

Dear Supporter,

The Holidays are quickly coming, Open House is nearly here and we are scurrying to make the seasonalchange, finally, from summer to winter so we are sort of like Santa’s workshop here in the desert. We arebuilding a new area to quarantine our new pigs and we are looking ahead to build a recovery building for oursurgery pigs coming home from the clinic and for cyro-surgeries done here at Ironwood. Our outreachprogram has made some good strides (see article on page 10 for details), but this is just the beginning of thiseffort and so much remains to be done. My letter in the September newsletter has started some conversationsof legislation to make some helpful changes for pigs.

As the Holidays approach and I think about the message of Peace on Earth I take pause because this is such atumultuous time that Peace on Earth is elusive. However there are increasing signs and victories this past yearfor animals that bring the end of 2017 with hope for a brighter future. So many groups, large and small, havebeen so active in saving so many animals left homeless in the Harvey, Irma, and Maria Hurricanes. RinglingBrothers Circus closed in May after 146 years of animal abuse and several other countries in the world havebanned animals from the circus. The founders of “Keepers of the Wild” are proposing a new 2480 acre WildPlanet Nature Park in northern AZ which will be the largest animal sanctuary in the US and have plans tohouse many of the animals that will be in need of a home as the circuses close. The CA state Legislationunanimously passed AB485 which says all cats, dogs, and rabbits sold in stores must come from shelters anddog rescue groups, NOT PUPPY MILLS. Unfortunately the AZ state legislators and Governor Ducey reversedthe progress AZ was making toward that goal.

One of our supporters who volunteers here each Open House gave a ten minute talk at her company, LibertyMutual, singing the praises of Ironwood Pig Sanctuary. This reached hundreds of people and she wrote to metoday “The world is changing – the animal supporters are more prevalent than ever before – even in CorporateAmerica.” She said her audience LOVED her talk.

So with all the turmoil around us Peace and Hope can be found and people are working throughout the worldto help animals of all species. For our pigs you are our Hope. Thank you so much. All of us at Ironwoodwish you a Happy, Healthy, and Peaceful Holiday Season.

Sincerely

Mary Schanz

PS Lucinda, one of the sweetest and most mellow pigs I have evermet, is one of our rescued Moms who was running lose in the cottonfields near us with her daughter and son. She comforts me andbrings me peace. Peace comes to us in so many unexpected ways.

here is a lot going on atIronwood Pig Sanctuaryevery day. Some of it is

the obvious…feeding andwatering the pigs, but there aremany details that go into takingproper care of the pigs andkeeping them safe andcomfortable. Most days it’s Tarynwho gets the ball rolling. Shecomes in at 4:30 a.m. (or earlierduring the summer) to prepare thespecial meals and load them intothe various tubs going out to thedifferent fields along with themorning medications. Next shefeeds the elderly pigs that live inthe backyards of the VisitorCenter and Ben and Mary’shouse. At this time of year thatmeans feeding by flashlight sincethe sun is barely beginning to rise. Some of these pigs need extrahelp due to their physical

limitations, so Taryn allows timefor that as well as checking theirhouses to see if anyone hadovernight accidents and needs tohave wet carpet or blanketsreplaced. Then it’s off to theholding pens where the newestarrivals are living. These pens arealso used for pigs recovering from

to fill, medications to hand outthen troughs to fill with grain forthe rest of the herd. While thepigs are eating the staff is busytucking in blankets that the pigsaccidentally drag out of theirhouses when they get up eachmorning, observing the pigs forphysical problems, puttingsunscreen on the white pigs’ ears

and spreading out alfalfa hay forthe pigs to graze on when they’redone with their grain. Some ofthe pigs who have issues withcracked hooves get hoofstrengthening ointment applied totheir toes. The feeding staff isalso trained to give injectionsbecause there may be times that apig in the field needs a shot ofantibiotics or their monthlyAdequan injection for jointproblems. Then pigs have to belet out of their pens, bowls pickedup and rinsed and the feed stationcleaned up and readied for thenext day.

Once the feeding team is in fullswing, another team of fourpeople follow a half hour behindthem to do the watering. Wadingpools must be emptied into themud wallows then scrubbed and

surgeries, injuries or illnesses sosome of them may need to havewounds treated or get injectionsof antibiotics. There can beanywhere from 20 to 35 pigsliving in the pens. Taryn workshard to get them all taken care ofbefore the rest of the feeding teamarrives.

Once the staff of 7 feeders are allpresent they grab the tubs thatwere loaded up with special mealsand juices earlier and head off tothe west side of the property tofeed the herds living in the ninefields over there. The fields arefed in the same order every day tokeep the pigs in a routine. Whilesome of the fields can be fed byone person, the larger fields likeSunset, Princess and Peoriarequire 2-3 people to get the jobdone. There are bowls to fill withspecial meals, pigs to put in theindividual feed pens, juice bowls

breakfast. It’s simply doublechecking to ensure the safety ofthe pigs. Most of the feeders goover to the east side of theproperty to begin feeding the pigsin the fields over there. Others goto the various special care areasset aside for pigs with physicaldisabilities or perhaps just old andarthritic. It can take 4-5 hours justto get all the pigs fed while thewatering is a 5-7 hour jobdepending on how hot it is on a

given day. During the feeding andwatering, the staff uses thewalkie-talkies to call in thingsthey notice that need to go on thework list. A shade ramada inSpike’s Field may have gottenblown down during the night.Esmerelda’s latch on her feed penis broken and needs replacing. Atrough in Northwest Field has ahole worn through the bottom andneeds to be replaced. A new poolis needed in Far East because theold one has a hole in it. AssistedLiving Phase 3 is out of hay andmust be restocked. And the listgoes on and on and on! All thosethings are jotted down on thework list to be taken care of afterthe feeding is completed and thestaff takes a break.

Even while the feeding andwatering is being taken care of,

refilled. There are bowls to becleaned and filled with drinkingwater scattered around the fieldsas well as inside each of theindividual feeding pens. Theautomatic waterers have to becleaned every day. The wateringteam makes sure the pigs haveplenty of water to drink as well asto play in to keep them cool. Likethe feeders, the watering staff alsoobserves the pigs as they gothrough the fields, noticing thingssuch as limping, cracked hoovesor abnormal behavior. Sometimesthey have to stop and break up ascuffle between two pigs.

Meanwhile, the feeding team hasfinished with the west side andsplit up. One person stays behind

to do the “walk around” whichinvolves going through every fieldand checking inside every singlefeeding pen to make sure that allthe pigs were let out after

there are additional staff peopleworking hard at other jobs.Catina is busy making around 350peanut butter sandwiches, fillingeach with various pills andpowders then putting them intothe bags labeled with the pigs’names and grouping them byfields. She must prepare all themedications for the next day’smorning and evening rounds.

Don is on hand taking care of avariety of tasks. If a water linebreaks out in one of the fields, acall over the walkie-talkie getsDon moving to shut the water offand make the repair. If newshelters or troughs are needed, heis there to get those built.Creating a new field meansputting up fencing and addingmore water lines and hose bibs. Awind storm has ripped the roofingoff several shelters in North Field,an automatic waterer is running

over in the Frat House, the ATVwith a wagon load of hay has aflat tire…who’re you gonna call? That would be a matter for ourhandyman, Don!

Then there’s Travis hauling waterfrom town to fill the storage tanks. The water well here does a greatjob but it’s not enough to supportthe high pig population with all

their pools, wallows and waterbowls as well as the staff that liveon-site. For two to three dayseach week Travis will make the

trek back and forth picking uploads of water to supplement thesupply pumped from the well.

The morning meal for the holdingpen pigs and the 29 differentfields and special care areas isfinally finished. But guess what! We’re not done yet. Now it’s timeto go back through all those sameplaces and give lunches to anyyoungsters under 9-12 months aswell as a handful of the seniorswho need extra meals to keeptheir weight up. There is also alist of boys who have a history offorming urinary stones orgranules and girls with frequentUTI issues. These piggies getdiluted cranberry/grape juice atlunch time to ensure that they aredrinking enough. Three pigs alsoget a midday medication everyday and are included with thelunch schedule.

While two staff members split upthe lunch shift chores, others aretackling the work list of theoddball repairs and things thatwere called in during the morningfeeding. On top of that are the

the sanctuary to groups ofvisitors. Bales of hay are loadedup and taken out to restock thefeed stations every other week.Hay deliveries come in once ortwice monthly and several staffmembers work hard to unload andstack the bales in the hay barn. That is especially grueling whenit’s 110 degrees!

Beginning in the wee hours of themorning and going on throughoutthe entire day is the rotation ofpigs that are living in the holdingpens. They each need to take aturn in one of the two exerciseyards for a half hour or more sothat everyone is able to have time

to run around and explore. Thatsounds easy enough butsometimes you get a pig like Poohwho likes to play hide and seek. When it’s time for her to comeback in she seldom comes whencalled and will be hiding in thebushes or up under the water tank.Matilda falls asleep underRichard’s trailer and you have togo wake her up. The litter ofyoung boys may be running incircles acting silly and totallyignore your efforts to herd themback into their pen. You neverknow how long the rotation chorewill take.

regularly scheduled activities thatoccur on particular days. OnMondays 3-6 pigs are loaded inthe van and taken to the vet clinicfor Tuesday surgery. Tuesdaysand Fridays are the days that theATVs are loaded with bags of

grain to be taken out to all thefields to restock the tubs at thefeed stations. Every thirdTuesday the feed store deliversover 4 tons of grain in 50 poundbags. At least one staff memberhelps unload and stack those inthe grain barn. On Wednesdayspart of the staff works on thedaunting task of keeping all thepigs’ hooves and tusks trimmed. The trimming team works hard tokeep those hooves in shape.

Every Thursday I head into townto pick up miscellaneous supplies, prescriptions and grocery items tostock up for the week. During thecooler months, Saturdaymornings include giving a tour of

Most days include a list of pigsthat need specific medical carethat requires 2-3 people to getdone. After major dental surgeryMartin needed to have his mouthflushed daily at first then

gradually cut back on frequencyas the hole where his tusk hadbeen began to close up. He isextremely shy and skittish, so itrequired 3 people to work on him.It could be that the girls who gotspayed earlier in the week areready to have their IV catheterstaken out. Depending on theirpersonalities, it could be done byone person or may need 2 or 3more to help. It seems that thereis always a pig with a footwrapped due to an injury or splithoof or having stones stuckbetween their toes. Those

bandages have to be changedregularly. New male arrivalsrecently neutered need to havetheir incisions checked forinfection.

majority of the day. A stray pig ispicked up by Animal Control sooff goes another staff member tobring that one to the sanctuary.Pigs from out in the fields that arescheduled for surgery, maybe aspay or a dental, must be broughtin to the holding pens a few daysprior to adjust their diets inpreparation for undergoinganesthesia. That normally takes at

least two people to get thataccomplished. All of the trashand recycled items have to behauled to the dump so there goesanother person. The chores neverend and the work is nevercompleted. A lot getsaccomplished every single daybut it starts all over againtomorrow!

Taking proper care of over 500pigs is a lot of hard work. It’sendless work. Sometimes it’sthankless work. But it’s donewith love for the pigs….alwayswith the pigs in mind. Andbecause of your support anddedication to Ironwood, all thepigs are well fed, medicated, trimmed and snuggled inside theirshelters with their blankets at theend of each day.

---Donna

One of the last chores of the day isto give out the eveningmedications. One person who haslearned where the pigs like tohang out during the day goesthrough each field to hand out anaverage of 75 evening sandwicheswith meds. Three other staff splitthe special care areas whichrequire more time. The elderlyand/or sick pigs need theirmedications, averaging 35 eachevening, as well as diluted juiceand slices of fruit for everyone.Getting the old ones out of theirhouses can sometimes be a chore, but they need to get up to drinkand go to the bathroom everyafternoon. There are also a fewpigs that get a late meal as well.

All of the above are the normalday to day happenings that arealways on the schedule. Otherthings crop up constantly. Duringthe summer monsoon seasonwe’re often faced with the resultsof flooding or heavy wind damageadding more things to the repairlist. A winter rain means wetblankets to hang up on fences todry then going back later in theday to tuck them into shelters.More often than we want, a pighas to be rushed off for anemergency vet visit which willpull a staff member for the

to go home.

Another family had a stray boarbreak into their yard and soontheir five females were all givingbirth. Many of the babies did notsurvive. Soon the very youngmales, who can be fertile as youngas 60 days, had impregnated thefemales again. This is a fact mostpeople are not aware of. So onceagain there was a crisis pending. We brought the six surviving boysand two young females, nowslightly over 5 months old, here tospay and neuter. To our surprise

the tiny girl was pregnant. Welutalysed all the adult females. Then the neutered boys andspayed females were returned totheir home. Both families arenow looking for homes for theirpiglets but rest well knowing

there will be no more pigletson the way. We are gratefulthese families reached out forour help before the situationwas truly out of control. Theytoo are grateful we were ableto step in and help them withmore unintended pregnancies.

We took a group of six who were

n my letter in the Septembernewsletter I talked about thehorrible crisis in pig

breeding and overpopulation. This continues to be a huge issue.I mentioned we were going tostart to spend more of ourresources on reaching out to helpthose in need with out of controlbreeding situations. To that endwe have made some progress. Some of the people in thesituations I mentioned did reachout to us for help and were willingto cooperate with us in order tohelp them. I want to give you anupdate on the lives we havetouched and how we are helping. In some cases the pigs are beingreturned to their homes after theyhave been spayed and neuteredand in some cases we have takenthe pigs here at Ironwood. Onefamily in Tempe was spiraling outof control. We brought their 4males here to neuter thenlutalysed the remaining adultfemales that we thought werepregnant. Once the boys wereready to return home we tookthem back then picked up the sixyoung females pictured here. What cute little chunky girls they

are! They have all been spayedand recovered and now are ready

being bred and sold for meat. Thefirst litter had been sold. Therewere four remaining from thesecond litter; Pedro, Miguel,

third litter. They have all beenspayed and neutered preventingmore pregancies from occuring.

We got a call to help with somepigs the owner had placed in thecare of a man who lived near thecotton fields near us. He workedthere and agreed to keep them at aplace not far from where he waslocated. When his car brokedown and he was evicted from hisproperty he turned the pigs lose.He said, rightly so, that he couldnot get to them to feed them andthey had a better chance on theirown. He would soon be gone. Hethought they had a better chanceon their own with irrigationditches and foliage to feed on. Wearrived an hour before the manwas moving. With his help we

were able to capture Lucinda andher son Johnny Rocket and herdaughter Latoya. The dad and

another son were not found. We took Lucinda for animmediate spay. The mantold us she had had twoprevious litters of 9 and 11and there were only three thathad survived.

Lastly we brought Cookie andBilly to Ironwood in late

September. The man had beenevicted and wanted us to take hispigs. He would not relinquish thelast and only survivor of Cookie’s

two previous litters to us. Welutalysed Cookie and Billy hasbeen neutered.

Pictured here are the faces ofthose we have spayed andneutered and whose lives we havechanged forever. They are happyand healthy. You can see from thesurvival rate that most do notmake it in life. There are very few

good homes for pigs. It is saidthat up to 90% of pigs adopted or

bought do not remain in theirhomes. Therefore Prevention isthe Best Answer. These are onlyfive situations out of so many, butit is a start. I cannot guess howmany lives have been saved bythese interventions, but it is many. All together there were 23females involved who could haveproduced so many more unwantedbabies. Your support has madeand will continue to make itpossible for us to do moreoutreach and help more peopleand pigs in these situations. Thankyou.

eople often ask wheredo the pigs sleep andwhere do they go

when it rains. The pigs havea variety of choices to callhome. We built most of theshelters that are scatteredaround in all the fields, butthere have also been quite afew donated by peoplereleasing their pigs to us.Sometimes supporters give usthe giant and extra large igloos. One year a local high school shopclass built some cute houses withwindows for the pigs as their endof the year project. The homescome from different sources in allsizes to provide shelter for thepigs.

The wooden shelters built byIronwood’s staff or volunteerscome in two sizes, a single and adouble. The single size can behome to 1-3 pigs depending ontheir size and how cozythey want to get. Thedoubles can comfortablyhouse 4-6 although I’veactually seen 11 packedinto one during arainstorm. The weathercan affect how many pigssleep together. When it’s

hot they tend to spread out more, even sleeping out under the treesovernight. During the coldweather the pigs pack in tighter toshare body heat. Some pigs preferhaving their own spaceand will claim a homeand not allow anyoneelse in. Dewey was likethat when he first movedout into Comanche’sField. Months later hehad become goodbuddies with a group offive other pigs. That group liveswhere several houses are togetherin a “neighborhood” and theyswitch around all the time, sleeping in different houses withdifferent pigs. It’s like they taketurns being with each other.Dewey is comfortable sharing

space with his friends now.

Some of the larger fieldshave what we call a “lowboy” shelter. These are flatroofed, open-sided sheltersset low to the ground. In thesummer the sides are eitheropen or have shade cloth toblock the sun. For the wintermonths we hang carpets onall four sides to enclose the

shelter creating a warm cozyplace to fill with blankets and/orbedding hay. The low boys arepopular with large groups offriends. In the Peoria Field, the

low boy will sometimes be filledwith 20 or more pigs. Some of thelow boys have shade clothextensions built off the ends withpools and mud wallowsunderneath. Reuben will oftenget up, go take a dip in the poolthen rejoin his buddies under the

roofed portion. Howconvenient is that!

We have a few camper shellsthat the pigs enjoy sleepingin. The windows can beraised for the hot season thenclosed up for the winter.Otis, Wilbur and Herbie

staked their claim on the campershell in the back of the Far East

Field when they first moved there. Two and a half years later, thoseboys are still living in it. Theylove that camper shell!

The igloo shelters (or pigloos) arealso favorites of pigs who wanttheir own space or only one friendto sleep with. The Main Field hasseveral pigloos clustered togetherin the shade of some palo verde

trees. Those are very popularwith the pigs. Franklin’s bestfriend had to be moved intoHospice. He no longer felt likeliving in their old house, one ofthe wooden doubles, so he movedinto a pigloo. He now has lots ofneighbors keeping him company.

All of the shelters at Ironwood arealtered for the seasonal changes. With winter soon approaching, wewill begin hanging the carpetsidings on the low boys to enclose

them. Carpet doors will be hungon the wooden shelters and theopenings of the camper shells. The pigloos will have heavyblankets or quilts to cover thedoorway. Blankets will fill eachhouse to provide nesting materialfor the pigs. It’s a big job to getthe shelters ready for winter tomake sure that the pigs will bewarm and cozy.

Every field at Ironwood has avariety of sizes and styles ofshelters so that the pigs can find ahome they are comfortable in,

whether by themselves or withfriends. There are houses groupedtogether in neighborhoods as wellas isolated shelters for those thatneed their “me time”. The

number of houses per field isdependent on the population ofthe herd but there are always more

houses available than the pigsactually need so that they havechoices as their needs change orfriendships develop. Thanks toyour support we can provideplenty of housing for theseadorable pigs who want a nice, comfortable place to call home.

az was one of the gang of seven pigs plus onesheep who came from Kathy when she wasgetting a divorce in 2012. She had adopted some

from us, found some along the roadside, taken one whowas unwanted from a family, and one from a feed store. They were Tommy, Timmy, Toby, Tyler, Taz, Theo,Tucker and of course Joey the sheep. Taz and Theo werewith us for a time in 2009 to be neutered and then returnedto Kathy. The gang all live together in our Princess Fieldexcept little Tommywho passed awayshortly after he

arrived. Taz is the only one who does notget a daily medicine of some kind sincetheir age ranges from 8 to 11 now. Sincemost pigs look at their med as a treat I liketo sneak Taz a little bread crust from theothers since he feels left out. We are sohappy to have been able to keep this bigfamily together.

ow could you not love that face? Prissycame from St. Matilda’s rescue on July 4thweekend in 2004 along with 45 other pigs

from there. We have no history on her like all theothers that came with her. We also have no ideawhat her age was when she arrived but since thatwas thirteen years ago we know she is among theoldest here at Ironwood. She has always been acharacter with a lot of personality and that has notchanged since she moved from her field to oursmaller Camelot area reserved for seniors or physically disabled. Any newcomerhas to be aware because Prissy will be trolling the area making sure they understandwho is in charge. We love her and her personality quirks.

Christine was a baby herself and pregnant when werescued her and her five other family members fromthe desert west of Tucson in June of 2013. They werebeing looked after by a squatter on an abandonedresort. The property was sold and the man evicted, sono one was left to care for the pigs that came and wentat will. A kind man built a pen and fed the pigs in thepen until we could get there to pick them up.

Christine had a hard recovery from her spay anddeveloped a suture infection. She was confined to apen for some time while we treated her with Epsomsalt baths and antibiotics. She had a full recovery andwas returned to her family. Her family and Taz’sfamily all live together in our Princess Field. Theyhave become friends and hang out with each other. Two success stories for sure. ---Mary
