Reformation@501: Looking Ahead October 31, 2017 marked the 500

th Anniversary of the Reformation because of the day

we have chosen to associate with the beginning of the Reformation, October 31, 1517. It was on that day that Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the castle church, All Saints’ Church, in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. (Have you seen Sharon Rosenkoetter’s pictures of this very door and church? If not, check out the Wittenberg Photo Exhibit in Ronnenkamp Hall while it is still up.) If we use this accounting for the beginning of the Reformation this means that November 1, 2017, All Saints’ Day, begins the first day of the 501

st year after the Reformation.

While it’s helpful to have a starting point we have learned already through our Refor-mation@500 series that the ideas which changed the church and society during the 16

th

century began long before 1517 and continued from that point on. Be sure and take in the rest of the events of the series taking place this month through December 1

st. See

the article elsewhere in this newsletter for a listing of those events. Also, did you know that the two Crepe Myrtle trees planted in the Church Parking Lot in October were donated, with the assistance of matching funds from Grace Foundation, by our youth because of their participation in the Luthergarten Project? Our middle and high school youth along with youth from Luther House teamed up last Spring to donate a tree to be planted in the Luthergarten in Wittenberg. A corresponding tree, a Cascara tree, was then planted in the back yard of Luther House. And now, two more trees have been planted here at Grace. The tree at Luther House has a stone marker explaining its signif-icance as a Luthergarten tree and one of the trees in our parking lot will eventually have a similar marker. This Luthergarten Project was begun as a tangible way to commemorate the 500

th Anniversary of the Reformation

by designating the planting of 500 trees at three different locations in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. Churches from all over the world and from all denominations are invited to sponsor one of these 500 trees and then plant a corre-sponding tree (or in our case trees) in their own locations. The trees in Wittenberg marked by the individual church community who donated them reflect places all over the world touched by the Reformation. For those who visit Wittenberg now and in the years to come this will be a witness to a global and vibrant church which even Martin Luther would have had a difficult time imagining. Likewise, the corresponding 500+ trees planted in many and var-ious nations throughout the world will root us in a movement that continues to move us today to bring the life and light of the gospel to renew us as individuals; us as the one, holy, catholic church; and us as citizens of this one world we share with people of every nation, race and creed. Martin Luther is attributed as saying, “Even if I knew that the world would end tomorrow, I would still plant my apple tree today.” As Christians we are a people of hope up to and through the very end. A tree is a sign of hope and is why the community of Corvallis gathered at the Islamic Center in February of 2011 to plant a peace tree following the bombing of the center several months before that. It’s been reassuring to see that tree grow and flourish as one drives down Kings Street. Now, there will be two more trees to watch grow, flourish and bloom as one drives down Kings. May they bring hope to this congregation, this community and this world. In hope for the future springing from the past and present, Pastor Netsie *The picture insert shows the location of our Corvallis tree in the Wittenberg New Town Hall Luthergarten. It’s tree #386. If look-ing at this picture in color it is the darker red dot of the two red dots. For more information go to the Luthergarten website: www.luthergarten.de Click the British flag at the top to get the English version, then again on the left, the “List of All Trees” tab and type Corvallis in the search box. It will bring up all the details about our tree including the link to the location.

Pastor Wendell’s Class By Heart: Conversations with Martin Luther’s Small Catechism

Pastor Wendell, with Donna King’s help, has found some new material on Luther’s Small Catechism. By Heart is material that reviews the five chief parts of his catechism, just in time for the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. The Congregational Council heard that our Presiding Bishop is encouraging each congregation to take a new look at the Small Catechism on this 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. So this is one of the opportunities you will have to delve into this enchiridion of our faith. The five chief parts are The Ten Commandments, The Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, Holy Baptism with Confession, and Holy Communion. Each month we will look at a different part as we cover the whole catechism.

Because there are a number of offerings for adults this autumn, the Sunday of the class may vary from month to month, but we hope to have plenty of notice to let you know when these will be. Look for the first Class October 8 in Ronnenkamp Hall. If you would Like the Book: You may order the book By Heart: Conversations with Martin Luther’s Small catechism by calling or texting Pastor Wendell at: 541-223-3503.

Sunday Adult Bible Study with Frank & Sue The quarter comes to a close with four sessions drawn from Numbers, 1 Samuel, Jeremiah, Hebrews, and 1 Corinthians. They examine the components of the covenant God makes with the priest Phinehas and the divine promise to Israel through the prophet Jeremiah. The unconditional divine promises are to maintain a perpetual priesthood, forgive the unfaithful, and establish a new covenant with Israel. God seals this covenant of pure grace through Christ as mediator and by writing the law in the hearts of God’s people.

All Saints Sunday — November 5

Each year on all Saints Sunday we remember in our prayers those who have died since the last All Saints Day. This year that would include all those who have died since November 1, 2016. If you would like to remember a friend or family member who has died in the past year, please contact Carol in the church office at [email protected] or 541.757.1600 prior to Friday, November 3.

Thanksgiving Baskets — November 12

Grace has a practice of providing Thanksgiving Baskets for families in need during the Thanksgiving Holiday. Here’s how we’ll be planning them this year — On November 12 we will have a shorter worship service with a sermon, then plan for the baskets at the close of worship. We will form groups to put together dinner baskets for others in the community. This will make it possible for those who might not have adequate financial resources to have a nice Thanksgiving dinner. So, be sure to be in worship that day to get in a group. If you have to miss, however, you may also contact the church office to be add-ed to a group. Phone: 541-757-1600 or email [email protected].

Give Thanks — November 22 @ 7 pm With grateful hearts we will gather on the evening before Thanksgiving for worship. Our service will be the Eucharist, the Great Thanksgiving. Our Thanksgiving Eve worship is an important dimension of our Thanksgiving Holiday here at Grace. The pie we serve afterward is a reminder of our delight in the goodness of God’s blessings. (see below)

Pass the Pie Fellowship — November 22 After the 7 pm Thanksgiving Worship

Fireside Room Bring your favorite pie—home baked or store-bought—to share with family, friends & guests. Deliver the pies to the Fireside Room kitchen Wednesday afternoon; or just before the Thanksgiv-ing service. No need to sign up. Pies will be cut, served and ready to eat with delicious hot coffee (decaf) in celebration of our delight in our generous God.

Advent Services

We hope you will participate in the Sundays of our 2017 Stewardship Emphasis to learn more about the min-istry and mission of Grace Lutheran Church. Again our Theme is:

Growing, Reaching And Caring for Everyone This comprehensive look at how we use our Time, Talents and Treasures. Through our Sunday video presentations, we have been lifting up the many areas of ministry here at Grace Congregation. If these min-istries are to continue, those who are able must really consider the possibility of increasing our monetary contributions for 2018. As prices increase, so also the cost of doing ministry goes up as well. Our Stewardship emphasis will continue through the first part of November. Commitment Sunday will be No-vember 5. If you have questions about this year’s budget you are welcome to call or email Hal Brauner: 541-753-0023, or [email protected] Because there is no Stewardship Potluck this year, you will be told of the results of our stewardship in Sunday worship.

Our Stewardship Emphasis is in Full Swing

Advent arrives later than usual this year. The first Sunday in Advent is over a month away, on December 3, and our first Wednesday Advent service isn’t until December 6 (St. Nicholas’ Day). All this will likely make Christmas seem to come early. As in recent years, a soup supper will precede each worship service at 6:00 pm. There will soon be a sign up in the entryway if you would like to make soup or make other contributions to our evening repast, one Wednesday. We will use Holden Evening Prayer for our Wednesday worship. We have had many requests that we use this setting of Vespers. The paring of the music and the poetry of this service lend themselves well to the December ambience of the Advent holidays. These prayers are sung, for the most part, and with many of us now familiar with the music, we sing it quite well. If it is new to you, the confident singing of those around you will help you learn it fairly quickly. It uses not only the format that is found in our Evangelical Lutheran Worship hymnal, but also the pattern which evolved though the prayer practices of the early church. It is a delightful matching of the ancient texts of the Vespers service (evening prayer) with gentle music conceived in a winter setting deep in the wilderness of Washington’s Cascade Mountains. It was composed for Holden Village, a Lutheran Retreat Center, in the mountains northwest of Lake Chelan, in the winter of 1985-86. As soon as Evening Prayer ends, the Chancel Choir will rehearse, at approximately 7:30. Advent Schedule: Wednesday Nights 6:00 Soup Supper 7:00 Holden Evening Prayer 7:30 Choir (or when Evening Prayer is completed)

Partners in Faith The next Partners in Faith event is on Friday, November 10. The evening will begin with a potluck dinner at 6:00 pm in the Fireside Room. Bring a dish to share and your own place setting(s). This month features a rousing game of Bunko at 7 pm. There will be prizes! Call Sue Musil for info at 541.745.5511.

Grace Center It is a pleasure to hear about Grace Center field trips, but the Center serves a wider variety of all participants, many of whom may have memory prob-lems or disabilities requiring specialized help. In day- to-day programs Grace Center has found that participants needn’t be separated; they socialize well in activities like the visiting musicians who entertain them all; if they don’t re-member friends’ names the words of old time, or new songs, come back in dynamic sing-alongs. To recognize participants who need personalized help, the Center has a “floater” called their Participant Specialist who hovers around activities to note individuals who aren’t coping with art work or cooking or gardening programs with the rest. The specialist joins this participant to guide him or her with personal attention. When I’ve visited the Center there is an atmosphere of love and acceptance with everyone. One Center room, called the MSE room, has a remarkable way of calming and soothing individuals who may have experienced Traumatic Brain Injury in the past, or Post Traumatic Stress or depression. Co-director Tera explained “The MSE room is designed to deliver stimuli to various senses, using lighting effects, color, music or scents.” Individuals diagnosed with dementia may be in the MSE room for 15 to 30 minutes and it decreases their tendency to wander for up to four hours … even on returning home. In this way the Center makes sure each participant is served their needed treatments and they are comfort-ed. - Betty McCauley

Ronnenkamp Hall

Thanks to Ron Larson for making the tracks in Ronnenkamp Hall that allow Grace to display rotating art. The plan is to have frequent shows of work by Grace artists The displays are planned to be 6 weeks in duration. Please tell the pastors if you wish to post your art. Ron Larson improved on the display tracks that are commercially available and made them at a fraction of the cost of the others. The tracks allow the showing of pictures or photos or quilts posted via thumbtacks in a cork strip or the hanging of framed art from special hooks. We really appreciate this addition to our efforts to worship the Creator. On display in Ronnenkamp Hall through Dec. 1 is a showing of 30 photographs of Lutherstadt Wittenberg by photographer Sharon Rosenkoetter. Husband Larry helped immensely with the matting and framing. The photographs were taken this past April during the four hours that the Rosenkoetters spent in Witten-berg. Germany is widely celebrating the Reformation for both its religious and secular significance. In ad-dition to the theological innovations -- salvation by grace alone, Scriptures as the source -- the Refor-mation was a major influence on the development of the German nation with a common language from a host of smaller principalities. "We could have enjoyed a week in this fascinating town," said Sharon. "So many of the buildings and artifacts from Luther's period have been carefully preserved, lovingly restored, and clearly explained. The photos displayed at Grace aren't extraordinary, but I decided to share them because they provide another way for viewers to understand and celebrate the reformers' contributions during the 500th anniversary of the Reformation."

Stir up in us the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding,

the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord,

the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen
