These are the words of Ban Ki Moon, former United Nations secretary-general. He was speaking to the general assembly but his words convey perfectly the aim of the tve awards for which you are gathered this evening. This year’s film entries demonstrate the tremendous efforts of social and business communities from all over the globe in finding solutions and joining the dots. Tonight’s spotlight on the stage at BAFTA will shine a light on these challenges and, more importantly, on companies’ creative, innovative solutions.

The scale of the task ahead is enormous and complex. It requires a change so great it’s hard to know where to start. At Fastflow Group we are honest with ourselves. We don’t profess to be the ‘greenest’ business in the UK, but we are on the journey. We have set ourselves targets and are making an effort. This is a good place to start.

And we find that it’s not a disadvantage to be ‘green’. In fact, it’s a competitive advantage. In the sectors in which Fastflow Group works we can see strong evidence of positive change:

• Our customers are demanding low-carbon approaches to service delivery, which in turn cost less.

• Solar, wind and other forms of renewable energy are on the way to becoming less costly than traditional forms of energy.

• Many governments are incentivising and stipulating a shift to lower carbon transport models i.e. electric vehicles.

• The affordable housing community is evolving rapidly as it adapts to provide sufficient and better quality social housing.

Increasingly, sustainable goes hand-in-hand with efficiency - specifically, business efficiency.

Our environmental journey is why we at Fastflow Group sponsor the awards, but the relationship has been two way. The films encourage us to do all that we can to create more sustainable housing and infrastructure. We hope the films also inspire you to make a change.

I hope you all enjoy the evening and these fantastic awards. If we take away one thing, I hope it’s this: a desire to build on the important work being done, and a willingness to make a difference.

Playing a part in, and contributing to, a sustainable future

The Fastflow Group is humbled and incredibly honoured to be the main sponsor for the tve Global Sustainability Film Awards for the third consecutive year. tve is such an important charity. Our sponsorship is our own small way of endeavouring to make a positive contribution to the sustainability agenda. We believe that the human species has a contract with our planet. Mother earth provides us with everything we need for life and in return we should honour, respect and protect it. The awards are a worthy recognition for all those that are honouring the obligation. No matter how large or small their efforts may be, we can all make a difference.Since formation in 2005 Fastflow has endured and flourished through difficult times. This is partly because we understand the value of respecting

our clients and honouring our contracts.True to our values, we aim to operate in a responsible

manner, working hard behind the scenes to maintain and service infrastructure that is essential for daily life.

And now, having earned our clients’ trust, we have been given the chance to be centre stage. The work we do on our

customers’ water, energy and affordable housing assets puts us firmly in the spotlight.

When we help to ensure the safe operation of the UK’s energy supply, install or repair services in the street, or enter someone’s home to repair a leaking tap, fit a new

kitchen, roof or bathroom, we are the public face of our clients. So, we are well aware that we simply cannot afford to fluff our lines. Each of our three divisions shares a commitment to the highest standards of customer service, technical expertise and efficiency. Our affordable housing customers own and manage over 200,000 properties and include A2Dominion Housing Group, Genesis Housing Association, Southern Housing Group, Catalyst Housing Association and many more. Our water customers, Northumbrian Water and Scottish Water, provide clean water for over three million people. Fastflow maintains over 80% of Northumbrian Water’s clean water network.National Grid, our largest energy customer, owns and operates the National Gas Transmission system. Our skilled engineering teams are working on strategic projects throughout the UK, enhancing and ensuring assets are operating efficiently, and capable of safely managing future energy needs.

Whether it’s as an extra, understudy or the star, we are more than happy to play our part in ensuring our clients receive recognition for working in a sustainable way, so we’d like to highlight that:• NationalGridPLCwasnamedResponsibleBusinessoftheYearbyBusinessintheCommunity

greetings from tveCheryl Campbell, tve executive director More than three decades ago a group of committed journalists, filmmakers and environmentalists, with the backing of UK broadcaster Central Television (now part of ITV), the United Nations Environment Programme and WWF-UK, established tve.

Our mission is the same today as it was then – to inspire change for a greener, fairer world through the power of film, and to ensure that as many people as possible have access to engaging, well-researched content about the big environmental and development challenges of our time. These days we produce multimedia communications and empower others to do so too.

Through the tve Global Sustainability Film Awards we showcase how companies are engaging with sustainability. We are proud to be able to provide a platform for companies at the cutting edge of sustainability to show how they are addressing the challenges faced by all businesses – through that most powerful medium of film.

Joanne Wheatley, tve director of finance The tve Global Sustainability Film Awards fulfil a key role in enabling tve to achieve its charitable mission of inspiring change. This is also tve’s major fundraiser. I very much hope that you will dig deep and support the work of this wonderful charity tonight.

Sonia Hunt, tve co-ordinator It has been a pleasure working with the multitude of people who make tonight’s event such a success. I know that many of you – sponsors, judges, entrants, guests, volunteers, filmmakers – play vital roles in the awards year in, year out. Thank you for the support you give tve. I am looking forward to putting faces to names tonight!

the president’s welcomeDavid Morley, Awards president Film is a powerful medium for inspiring positive change. tve has been helping people harness that medium for more than 30 years. Through its work, many compelling stories have focused the world’s attention on the challenge of protecting our fragile planet.

This occasion is an opportunity to see how the corporate world is increasingly rising to that challenge. The entrants tonight have all recognised that film is an eloquent and effective way to tell their story. Like no other medium, it engages consumers, employees and other stakeholders that increasingly want to deal with socially responsible enterprises. With your support, tve will continue to act as a catalyst for that engagement in the years ahead. Thank you to everyone who has been involved with tonight’s event, in particular our main sponsor Fastflow Group, our category sponsors, our supporters and volunteers, and our media partner, the University of Westminster. These awards will inspire not just the audience here at BAFTA tonight, but online viewers globally, to help make sustainability a mainstream political and social theme.

I wish you all a happy and enjoyable evening.

award partner - PA Group‘It’s on PA.’ Three simple words that sum up the currency and credibility of the PA brand. Since 1868, when the Press Association was founded as a London-based news gathering service for the provincial papers, the words shouted across a newsroom have acted as a catalyst for action when a story breaks. Today, much of the content people read, see and hear across all media continues to originate from PA. It is trusted because PA is fast, fair and accurate. Tonight we launch the Press Association award for environmental storytelling in order to recognise the powerful impact of good journalism and the pivotal place of the environment in today’s news agenda.

tve and PA share a commitment to fair and accurate journalism. Our award reflects these commitmentsTony Watson,

the founder’s award forsustainability on the big screen sponsored by Surina Narula MBE

‘My firm belief in the power of film to inspire change led me to found the tve Global Sustainability Film Awards in 2012. In the six years since, seeing the event go from strength to strength, my passion for tve’s mission has only grown. My new ambition is to bring in the most creative, evocative, effective form of mass communication: films on the big screen. So I was determined that this year’s awards include a prize for the films that can reach the largest audience of all. What better cinematic focus is there for feature films than the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the theme of this year’s awards? Life and death issues – stark injustices for women, the drama of not-so-natural disasters, the future of the planet – are at stake. It is our pleasure to welcome prestigious new judges from the feature-film industry to select tonight’s winner of this new award. We hope that our new award, sustainability on the big screen, will inspire more screenwriters and producers to explore sustainability and the crucial challenges for us all.’

Tonight’s auctioneer Tommy Walsh became a household name through his presenting role in GroundForce alongside Charlie and Alan.

His landscaping and building knowledge and skills led him to film FixYourHouseforFree in 2009 for Discovery Real Time, followed by FixItYourself in 2010. In 2007 Tommy and his team pushed their talent and dexterity right to the edge, building a new home in 60 days for £60,000 in Discovery Real Time’s TommyWalsh’sEcoHouse. It was built in the most eco-and cost-friendly manner as possible, with construction materials which take into account eco benefits, cost, availability and ease of use. Tommy recently returned to the screen on BBC1, presenting Cowboys&Angels.

His book DIYSurvival hit the UK’s bestsellers list. He subsequently published four more books: KitchenDIY,BathroomDIY,OutdoorDIYandLivingSpacesDIY.

All professional work experience is valuable both to their degree and to their job prospects; working with professionals on broadcast projects is the best experience a student can get.
