Message from the Principal...

Dear Oberon Families,

We are off to an amazing start this school year. Our building is ripe with enthusiasm

and energy as 525 students enter our doors and fill our hallways each day. Our

students come to us each day ready and eager to learn, and for that, we thank you!

We are looking forward to our upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences on September

26th and 27th. This will be a great opportunity for you to meet with your child’s

teachers to discuss your child’s academic progress so far this year. Conferences will

be from 3:30 – 7:00 pm both nights. There will be a hybrid Curriculum Night from

5:00 – 6:00 pm on Wednesday night of conferences (more info on this to be shared

next week). Thanks in advance for your attendance; your presence in your child’s

education makes all the difference.

As the year progresses, Oberon will work hard to ensure that all students have a

wonderful middle school opportunity in all developmental areas such as learning and

academics as well as social and emotional development as we support in their

transitioning to become independent adolescents. Middle school is definitely a

transitional time in our student’s lives, and you can expect to see many changes

during their short tenure here at Oberon. I assure you that we hold very high

Message from the Principal, continued...

Since the school year has begun, your student has heard a lot from their teachers and me about safety.

More specifically, we have talked at great lengths about the importance of every student at Oberon feeling

safe and that no student has the right to interfere with the learning of someone else. It is important for our

students to understand their role here at Oberon, and we appreciate your help in reinforcing these

expectations with your student as well.

I also want to encourage parents to be involved and stay informed during these short two years. Right now

is the time your student needs you the most. Your role as a parent is and should be changing, but your

involvement should not change as you continue to be there for your kids; it just may look different. Some

of the ways to stay informed and connected to all that is happening in your student’s school life include the

update weekly email from me highlighting school events and reminders; this monthly newsletter; teacher

and team websites that list upcoming assignments; Parent Portal and Schoology; the weekly D and/or F

notification on Fridays that you will receive if your student has earned a D/F in one or more classes; and of

course email communication with your student’s teachers. Teachers are great at responding to emails

within a day or two. Our website is an amazing resource as well.

Thank you for your support of all of us here at Oberon!

Respectfully,

Tara Peña

Social Emotional Learning Specialist

Hello, my name is Victoria Shotwell, and I am thrilled to join Oberon as the Social Emotional Learning

Specialist. This is my second year in Jeffco and my 14th year in education. I am a strong believer that

social-emotional skills are essential to lifelong success and need to be taught, just like academic skills. In a

2013 survey of 704 employers, half of those surveyed said they had trouble finding recent graduates to fill

vacancies in their companies. Applicants had the technical knowledge, but they lacked the communication,

adaptability, decision-making, and problem solving skills needed to do the job. Social emotional skills

truly are 21st century skills! I’m excited to work with the teachers to embed this teaching throughout the

day, as well as in the 7th grade advisement classes.

In my spare time, I like to create pottery, read, and spend time outdoors with my husband. Please let me

know how I might support you and your family.

It is that time of year again; time to help with fundraising or donating to the PTSA/school. On Monday, September 25 the students will come home with an order form for our fundraiser, Butter Braids. There is something for everyone so be sure to check it out, and offer them to your family, friends and anyone else who wants to enjoys a tasty treat. If you would prefer not to sell, we would appreciate you joining the booster club to donate to the school. You can do this by clicking the link below and donating $100.00 (or whatever you can afford).
