Gal-AA at the 2015 International Convention

80 years and 14 conventions is what marked the AA 2015 Interna-

tional convention in Atlanta Georgia July 2-5

During the AA International Convention over the July 4th weekend in

Atlanta this summer the GaL-AA committee hosted the dance party

and weekend-long hospitality suite for our community and convention

attendees. The weekend was a great success, beginning Friday

night when over 2000 attendees danced to the music of Atlanta's

very own Atlanta sober DJ.

Party guests were also treated to some wild entertainment with the

Miss Sobriety World contest and contestants from Atlanta and Dallas

raising funds for additional GaL-AA outreach.

What was experienced over the weekend took months of planning,

budgeting, fundraising, marketing and many, many meetings. We are

grateful to have such a dedicated committee and lucky to find profes-

sionals with experience they bring for their own special contributions

of time and talent. We also had over 150 volunteers just for the

weekend activities coming from all over the country and abroad. We

certainly could not have done it without such a great group of volun-

teers and committee members. Financially we maintained a fully self-

supporting budget and able to give back to GaL-AA International too.

We are very proud of the team and of creating a special event and

many lasting memories and friendships.

See you in Detroit in 2020 - Ron D. Atlanta

Gal-AA executive committee would like to thank all the volunteers for

making the event a success at the 2015 international convention.

Your hard work and dedication was evident at the Westin Hotel Hos-

pitality suite and Friday night dance.

GaL-AA would also like to thank the many many people who stopped

by to say hi, get information, and to tell us about what's happening in

Member story from the International

I am from Albuquerque New Mexico. my partner and I with three and two

years sober went to the AA International conference in Atlanta and it was our

first international conference . We stayed at the GaL-AA host hotel the Westin.

We met a group of men from Phoenix there in the GaL-AA hospitality room.

Three months later, I was attending their men's retreat called Renewal In the

desert. The connections in AA are infinite and unexpected. I love that about

AA.

The best part was the green welcoming committee chanting Bill Bill Bill, when-

ever I get in a place of fear I start hearing that rally in my mind and sometimes

I just say it out loud. BILL BILL BILL.

I am looking forward to the next AA international conference 2020 in Detroit.

Gal-AA Volunteers Service continues to be the guid-

ing force of our organization, thus

we are expanding the range of

volunteers. As in the past, some

may choose to represent a group,

city, area, state or country. Others

may represent a Roundup, another

AA Special Interest or Professional

Group.

Individuals and teams may choose

to work on specific projects that

extend the hand of A.A. in these or

other areas: Corrections, Commu-

nication, Treatment, Special

Needs, PI (Public Information),

CPC (Cooperation with the Profes-

sional Community), Archives, Cen-

tral/Area Office, State/Area/

Regional AA Conferences, just to

name a few.

Upcoming Newsletters and E-

Blasts will offer more information

on these many opportunities of

service. The goal remains to share

information to and from GaL-AA.

Sponsorship

Sponsorship is merely another way of describing the continuing special interest of a seasoned member that can mean so much to a newcomer turning to A.A. for help.

Individuals and groups cannot afford to lose sight of the importance of sponsor-ship, the importance of talking a special interest in a confused alcoholic who wants to stop drinking. Experience shows clearly that the members getting the most out of the A.A. program, and the groups doing the best job of carrying the A.A. mes-sage to still-suffering alcoholics,. are those for whom sponsorship is too important to be left to chance.

For the person seeking a sponsor

The process of matching newcomer and sponsor is as informal as everything else in A.A. Often, the new person simply approaches a more experienced member who seems compatible, and asks that member to be a sponsor. Most A.A.'s are happy and grateful to receive such a request.

An old A.A. saying suggests, "Stick with the winners. " It's only reasonable to seek a sharing of experience with a member who seems to be using the A.A. program successfully in every- day life. There are no specific rules, but a good sponsor probably should be a year or more away from the last drink - and should seem to be enjoying sobriety.

2015 International Financial information

An honor to serve

It's hard to believe that almost 2 years ago the GaL-AA Atlanta met for the first

time to discuss the 2015 convention and what, where, how and when we would

host the 2015 GaL-AA dance and hospitality suite. We were fortunate and

blessed to find a team relatively quickly with the skills dedication and time to

make our goal a success.

Over an 18 month period, the GaL-AA Atlanta team worked together on the

dance and hospitality suite for the convention. Most of the attention was put on

having a spectacular & fun dance. While not everything went smoothly or as

planned, the team pulled off the most successful dance in GaL-AA's history. It

was a great honor and privilege to be a part of this team! - Jim D. Atlanta
