The Parking Lot… past events; Page 2HAYRIDE Sandy & Joe Wilick On Saturday, Sept 26th we had 26 Miata’s meet at the Exploration Center on Canal Road. There we visited the center and saw a canal demonstration. We left at 3:00 pm for a short drive in and around the Cuyahoga Valley National Park on some country like roads. Crossing over State Route 82 we had assistance with the Brecksville Police Dept. which kept us together as it was a very short light. At 4:30 we arrived at the Carriage Trade Farm where we were greeted by the owner, Wade Johnson. Four Miata’s where already there, parked in the field along with Wade’s Austin Healey. Wade is a very hospitable person who really enjoyed having us at his farm. He explained how he came about owning the farm and how he started his collection of everything imaginable. There were old skates, scooters, telephones, ducks, playground rides, an old fashioned kitchen scene, carriages, 2 Cushman Scooters & a German car half the size of a Miata but still sat 2 people and many more collectibles from years past. Everyone brought a dish to share and it was excellent as usual. We roasted hot dogs and brats on the bonfire. After eating we all boarded two hay wagons for a nice drive around the perimeter of the farm. We had a total of 57 people so we all fit on two wagons. Wade had the tractor all shined up, it looked like it was brand new. After the ride, some members headed home and others roasted marshmallows on the fire. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day, the weather was warm and beautiful. We want to thank all the members who joined us that day. A special thank you to Dan Cali, Jan Stefancic and Daryl Baker for keeping us all together on the drive. Members who attended were Rich & Linda Placko, Bob & Jan Stefancic, Gary & Char Davis, Art & Maureen Davis, Scott & Mary Miller, Sharon & Bill Proctor, Jim & Marilyn Nenadal, Karen & Dave Baker, Mike & Lois Kerklo, Jim & Joyce Simmelink, Bob Gauss, Tom & Sandee LeMaster, Dan & Joanne Incorvati, Len & Nancy Monaco, Jared & Tiffany Fonner, Bill & Ruth Drew, Dan & Terri Cali, Daryl & Jane Baker, Charlie & Marlene Rodgers, Denny Blacklock & Linda, Jeff & Robin Arona, Bill Shepler, Roy & Arlene Sierleja, Steve & Ellen Laitinen, Bob & Betty Belding, Denny & Alicia Moeller, Tim Graham, Bob Palmer & Ava Singerman, Gary & JoAnn Cline and Sandy & Joe Wilick

Looking for Good Curves Tour, Oct 11, 2015; Wrap-Up ReviewBob Maurer and Becca GustavelTwenty cars joined us to tour country roads in weather that was about as perfect as it gets, a sunny 70 degree top-down day. We gathered at US 30 and SR94, Dalton where Becca treated us all with delicious homemade mini muffins and local apples, presented in autumn cornucopia style, centerpiece and all—spread out on the hood of CarNoir no less. And each car received a genuine collectable, a commemorative 3x5 magnet of the ‘Looking for Good Curves’ poster. After a short drivers’ meeting, we headed south on 94 to travel several back roads for an up close and personal look at many beautiful farms in the rolling hills of Holmes County near Charm on SR 557. The pace of the first part of the tour through Amish country had always intended to be slow in order to enjoy the quiet, picturesque scenery, but it was a little slower than we had planned; Amish buggies, pony carts with fun-loving kids at the reins and horseback riders were everywhere on our roads. It was great seeing all of them, but at one point we found ourselves following a three-buggy caravan for what seemed like forever. We couldn’t pass because of a looooong, blind curve where it would have been risky for even one Miata to pass --and we had twenty of them. Cruising at buggy speed was not exactly what I had in mind when I said we would take it slow. We took a short rest break in Wilkshire Hills (Bolivar) before starting the speedier part of the ‘Looking for Good Curves’ tour that was mostly in Tuscarawas and Carroll Counties. We saw both the west and east sides of Atwood Lake on SR 212 and SR 542. We found the best curves and no traffic to slow us down while on SR 164 and for most of our run on SR 43, which took us to our next rest break in Carrollton. It was shortly after the break, while on SR 542 that the bright sunshine glistening beautifully on Atwood Lake provided us a real visual treat. Then some back roads winded our way to the Canal Tavern of Zoar where the group enjoyed sandwiches, drinks, appetizers, excellent service and fun with friends. (I wonder if anyone noticed that on one of those back roads to the Tavern, the county road crew had long ago forgotten to remove the ‘Road Closed Due to High Water’ sign. But obviously the road gates were open, as expected, and we came through high and dry.) A huge thank you goes to Scott and Mary Miller who volunteered to serve as sweep car. Their reputation as great tour leaders is well known; now they are also known as being great at being the sweep car. They stopped traffic for us during our exits from the rest breaks and kept us well informed of what was happening at the back end of the pack that at times stretched for several miles. Along with the benefit of having a sweep car, we were grateful for the use of the club’s CB radios. Walkie-talkies are so hard to hear and their range isn’t far enough, especially in the hills and valleys. Buying the CBs this year was a good idea! And thanks to all who joined us on the tour and made the day so much fun. Being with good friends in Miatas—how much better does it get! Club events are great because the club members are great to be with. On the tour were: Jared and Tiffany Fonner, Scott and Mary Miller, Greg and Judy Selby, Daryl and Jane Baker, Mike and Lois Kerklo, Bob and Jan Stefancic, John and Donna Garsteck, Phil Daly and Kathy, Gary Davis, Jim Allman, Bob Palmer and Ava Singerman, John and Jeanne Embree, Rich Velardo, Brian Bouchard and Sandra Shaffer, Jim and Leigh Lambert, Marcello and Peggy Codispoti, Steve and June France, Ron Rasmussen, Joe and Joani Huber, Denny and Linda Blacklock.

Mazda News... Page 11

The following outlines the process for which we transform the MX-5 road cars into the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup race cars: To start the build of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Cup car, we will assign a bar code to each MX-5 road car to track the movement of each car through the production process. This tracking system enables our team to track progress of build, the parts being installed in final assembly, and the personnel that are hands-on during the production of the MX-5 Cup car. After the car has been stripped down, it is then moved to our fabrication department. The car is placed on a rack where the underside of the build begins. We remove the OEM radiator to allow for future installation of a racing radiator to handle the high revs a race car must sustain over a long period of time. We have developed a radiator that is designed to increase the cooling efficiency in more extreme racing conditions, while still utilizing the Mazda OEM parts (e.g., cooling fan, shroud, and coolant overflow bottle). Next, we remove the Mazda open differential to replace with a Mazda limited slip differential. The limited slip differential increases the car’s ability to efficiently apply the engine’s torque to the rear tires. This increase in efficiency translates into higher exit corner speeds. While still on the rack, we begin the cage preparation process. This prep allows for the team to remove seam sealer from the car, prep the chassis for welding, and remove non-critical studs and tabs. The ability to prep the interior makes for easier cage installation, and a higher quality paint job once the cage is installed. Finally, before the car is moved to one of two welding bays, a quality inspection tech performs a quality examination to ensure the cars are being prepared equally. The cage install is another critical step in the build process. With our FIA certified cage being CNC bent and laser cut, we have developed multiple jigs to ensure that every cage is identically installed in every car produced. This is another step towards creating race cars that are evenly matched to allow for the racing talent to be the differentiation. After the task of welding the cage in is completed and the car has passed another quality check, the car is moved to our paint department. The car is painted in our show car quality paint booth utilizing OEM quality paint. After being sprayed, the car goes through a bake process that cures the paint and ensures that the paint is both durable for racing’s stress, and its finish represents the quality of the build. Finally, the car is moved into one of seven assembly bays. Here race components from many top brands are assembled to the car, such as: cooling lines; performance exhaust; brakes; shocks; and radiators. The brakes, transmission, differential, engine, and cooling systems all receive top performing and tested fluids that are designed to withstand the harsh environments of motorsports. To continue the build, the electronics are added; doors and steering column are reintroduced to the car after being altered for the racing environment. Lastly, we install racing wheels and tires. After passing another quality check, the car is moved to our set-up plate. Here we corner balance and check the alignment of the car before signing off that the car is now an identically produced and prepared Global Mazda MX-5 Cup car. Mazda is committed to producing a high quality, identically prepared race car to enable the best competition and value motorsports has to offer. - See more at: http://mazdamotorsports.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/DisplayRacerStoryView?source=STORY&uniqueId=6330&storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&button=y#sthash.6zMebg2U.dpuf

Mazda Reveals Mazda RX-VISION Concept Powered by next-generation rotary engine SKYACTIV-R, represents Mazda’s vision of the future HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation unveiled the rotary-powered Mazda RX-VISION sports car concept at the Tokyo Motor Show*1 today. The rotary engine is a symbol of the company’s “never-stop-challenging” spirit. RX-VISION represents a vision of the future that Mazda hopes to one day make into reality; a front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car with exquisite, KODO design-based proportions only Mazda could envision, and powered by the next-generation SKYACTIV-R rotary engine. Rotary engines feature a unique construction, generating power through the rotational motion of a triangular rotor. Overcoming numerous technical difficulties, Mazda succeeded in commercializing the rotary engine, fitting it in the Cosmo Sport (known as Mazda 110S overseas) in 1967. As the only automaker to mass-produce the rotary engine, Mazda continued efforts to improve power output, fuel economy and durability, and in 1991 took overall victory at 24 Hours of Le Mans with a rotary engine-powered race car. Over the years, the rotary engine has come to symbolize Mazda’s creativity and tireless endeavor in the face of difficult challenges. While mass production is currently on hold, Mazda has never stopped research and development efforts towards the rotary engine. The next rotary engine has been named SKYACTIV-R, expressing the company’s determination to take on challenges with convention-defying aspirations and the latest technology, just as it did when developing SKAYCTIV TECHNOLOGY. “I look forward to talking with you more about this vision we have revealed here today at the Mazda stand,” said Mazda’s Representative Director, President and CEO, Masamichi Kogai. “Mazda will continue to take on new challenges in an effort to build a special bond with our customers and become their ‘one and only’ brand.”

The Garage… It’s all Fun! Page 13

Winter Storage Tips, from a Grandfather and his Grandson As the weather begins to cool down before the onset of winter, some us will be starting to think about storing our Miatas for the cold season. Here are some tips to ensure that your MX-5 will come out of the garage in spring ready to drive: 1. Prevent spoiled gasoline - Fill the gas tank & add Sta-Bil or similar brand of fuel stabilizer to the gasoline when you fill the tank, go for one last short drive to get the fuel stabilizer mixed in the tank and circulated throughout the fuel system. 2. A dry location - Storing your car in a dry place will prevent moisture from creeping into the undercarriage and cabin. If you are feeling extremely zealous, covering the ground underneath your car with plastic wrap will do the job even better. 3.Change fluids - This one, is a biggie. Fresh oil, coolant, and any other fluids you deem necessary will prevent wear and corrosion on the vehicle's internals and give you peace of mind through the winter. 4. Keep it Clean - Make sure you thoroughly clean your Miata inside and out before putting it away. Not only will this make sure your car looks great come spring, but a layer of a quality wax like Collinite 845 or a Meguiar's wax will keep your vehicle cover from scratching the finish. Make sure you clay your vehicle's exterior before waxing. Cleaning the interior will ensure that a stray French-fry or other piece of food will not make the car smell like death in the spring. 5. Keep it Fresh - Dryer Sheets and/or mothballs inside the vehicle will not only keep your MX-5 smelling fresh but also ward off any critters who may be looking for a winter home. Stuff some steel wool in the tail-pipes, to keep Mickey & friends from homesteading in the muffler. 6. Tires - Overinflate your tires by about 10 psi. This will keep those lumps and flat spots from ruining your tires. Once again, there is another option for an overzealous owner. Putting your car up on sturdy jack stands will put tire issues out of the question. 7. Cover it! - This one should be a no-brainer, but you will need a high quality vehicle cover that will protect your Miata's finish all winter. 8. Think about the first warm, sunny day in spring! The original Viper was introduced in 1992, was discontinued in 2010 due to Chryslers financial bankruptcy and was brought back to life in 2013. Only 760 Vipers were sold in 2014 and only 503 were sold through September of this year.
