The Social Action Committee is seeking volunteers to participate in this unique program that makes a difference in our community. The Village Support Network works to end the cycle of homelessness by providing stability and support to families transitioning from temporary shelter to housing. Teams of four to six volunteers from various congregations work closely with families to provide guidance, gentle accountability and, above all, open hearts. Volunteers assist with financial management, educational issues, job preparation, socialization and parenting skills, while also helping families integrate into their new community and connect with local resources. Other regular activities include helping enroll children in school and extracurricular activities, making doctors and dentist appointments, babysitting, taking children to the library and to the park, and other activities that the family might reasonably need to become more stable. The average commitment is four to six hours per month for six months, though this may vary according to family needs and volunteer availability. All team members receive eight hours of training, along with a program handbook and a resource guide. The Village Support Network provides ongoing support and guidance. We already have our first volunteer for CBI’s team – Sally Rosenfeld, who’s a Village Support Network veteran. She would be happy to answer any questions and give you more details about her experience. If you’d like to learn more about this amazing program, you are invited to attend Village Support Network’s next orientation meeting on November 17. No commitment necessary. For more info, please contact Sally Rosenfeld at srosenfeldfrank@ gmail.com or visit Village Support Network’s website at www.newcityinitiative.net/initiatives/village-support-network. “People become homeless not because they run out of money, but because they run out of relationships.” Paul Schroeder, Executive Director Village Support Network ank you, Robert Peltz! The Social Action Committee would like to give a big shout out to congregant Robert Peltz, who led this year’s High Holiday Funds for Food Drive. Through his efforts and commitment, Robert helped to raise over $10,000 — that translates into almost 18,000 pounds of food — for the Social Action Food Fund. Money from this fund goes to Lift Urban Portland, Meals on Wheels, Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon, Sunshine Pantry and Urban Gleaners, all Portland organizations that work to alleviate hunger in our community. We would also like to thank Kimberly Hartnett, author of Carolina Israelite, How Harry Golden Made Us Care About Jews, the South, and Civil Rights, who wrote all the materials for the drive. In the words of Winston Churchill, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Thank you Robert, Kimberly and everyone who donated to the High Holiday Funds for Food Drive for making a life by what you gave.

In a grateful state of mind...by Ida Rae CahanaSenior Cantor

Psalm 92 is recited every Shabbat evening, “Tov l’hodot L’Adonai Ul’zameir l’shim’cha elyon.” It is good to give thanks to God and to sing praises to the Name of the most high.

Acknowledging gratitude is good for the receiver, but really, does God need to hear songs of praise? Or is the one who recites and sings her thanks actually the lucky one? There are many manifestations of gratitude sprinkled throughout our liturgy; our prayer choreography provides an outward manifestation of inward humility. “Baruch Atah...” Blessed are You... The word for blessing, praising, in essence means giving thanks. “Baruch,” comes from the root “Barech,” which means “knee.” We humbly bend our knee and bow when we utter the words “Baruch

Atah,” we are remembering to stop and thank our Creator for the gift of life, to stop and thank our parents for raising us to the best of their ability, to stop and thank our teachers for encouraging us to expand our understanding. Once a year is not enough for the discipline of Thanksgiving; Judaism teaches us every day to wake up and give thanks.

“Baruch Atah...” Blessed are you - each one of you - who has chosen to become a part of this sacred community. “B’ruchah Atah...” blessed are you who has volunteered or given of your resources and time to help our community help others.

It is good to give thanks to God for all we are blessed with - may we continue to sing the praises of our Creator!

Rabbis Cahana and Joseph join me in gratitude to be serving such an amazing community. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!

Olivia BendisOlivia Bendis will become Bat Mitzvah on November 14. She is the daughter of Brian and Alisa Bendis and sister of Sabrina, Tabatha, and London. Olivia is in the seventh grade at Northwest Academy. For her Mitzvah Project, Olivia is collecting donations for the organization Schoolhouse Supplies, which gives free

school supplies to Portland Public Schools. During Friday night dinners in the Bendis household, Olivia collects donations from friends. This issue is important to Olivia because she uses so many supplies, and the idea that kids don’t have the same access as she does is close to her heart. Olivia requests that you donate school and office supplies at her Bat Mitzvah. For more information, or to make a monetary donation to Schoolhouse Supplies, visit their website at www.schoolhousesupplies.org.

Isaac ShulevitzIsaac Shulevitz will become Bar Mitzvah on November 28. He is the son of Jim and Anastasia Shulevitz and brother of Zoe and Simon. Isaac attends the Childpeace Montessori School. For his Mitzvah Project, Isaac has chosen to work with 4 Worlds United Soccer Alliance. This organization is a

Portland-based nonprofit that advocates for children from low income and refugee families guiding them to opportunities in education, soccer, and community. Isaac is collecting new and gently-used soccer shoes and apparel to give to refugee children here in Portland. He will have a donation box at his Bar Mitzvah. CahanaRSVP to the Temple office, 503-222-1069, but not requiredRabbinic literature divides itself into three distinct yet overlapping categories: legal, fanciful, and mystical. In this three-part course, we will trace ideas and questions through the great classical Jewish books of Talmud, Midrash, and Zohar. These texts represent the practical application of our moral ideas that our ancestors have struggled with for thousands of years and which continue to be used to this day. Come explore with us! No previous knowledge of text or Hebrew required.

The Exclusion of Israel: The BDS Movement and Christian CharityWednesday, November 18, 7:00 PMPollin Chapel, Schnitzer Family CenterPanel: Rabbi Michael Z. Cahana, Rabbi Zvi Fisher & Bob HorensteinIn recent years, there has been a concerted effort to delegitimize Israel through a program known as “Boycott, Divestment and Sanction (BDS).” Many universities and Christian denominations have been heavily lobbied to divest from the State of Israel by groups affiliated with the tactic of BDS. Many Jews are not even aware of these efforts.

The presenters of this program have been invited to speak to Christian groups all around the state of Oregon, in order to present another side of the Israel story and the quest for peace. Come learn about their experiences and the BDS materials used to frame Israel as a pariah state – as well as the ways in which their efforts have been successfully countered.

Celebrating Sydney! by Ned DuhnkrackPresident, Board of Trustees All of us have a Sydney Baer story. I will forever remember Sydney’s wise counsel and cheery advice, accompanied by her stash of my favorite chocolate and shared photos of Lyle and Lillian, our grandchildren. We will all miss Sydney’s constant, steadying presence and guidance when she retires on Thanksgiving of this year.

For over 15 years, Sydney has provided dedicated service to our community, demonstrating an unfailing commitment to ensure that all the pieces at CBI fit together smoothly, graciously, and joyously. All of us see Sydney at services, continuously giving

hands-on assistance to staff and congregants. Behind the scenes, Sydney attends more board and committee meetings than you can count, giving valuable guidance rooted in the wisdom of her long history with CBI and her love of Judaism. Sydney also served CBI in a period of change and challenges. She partnered with the clergy and board to maintain and preserve our historic campus. For over 15 years, Sydney has been a strong force holding our community together and she will forever hold an important place in the hearts of our members.

Please join me, our Board of Trustees, Past Presidents, clergy, and staff, in thanking Sydney and wishing her well in her retirement. Most importantly, please join us in Goodman Hall on November 13, following the Shir Shabbat service, when we will celebrate Sydney’s service to our community and share our Sydney stories!

How do you create Traditionsby Jenat Levison FeldmanDevelopment Director

What makes a Tradition a Tradition? Let’s be honest - we all embrace some traditions with great warmth and appreciation, others not so much. An annual fundraising rubber chicken dinner may be a tradition, but not the kind

that evokes positive memories, and certainly not the kind Brad and Michelle Tonkin wanted to create. And thus began the script that became CBI’s newest Tradition.

Leaders lead – it’s just that simple. They have a vision, they have a goal and they have objectives to reach along the way. Michelle and Brad were clear from the start about the kind of event they wanted to chair, how they wanted to engage both committee members with experience alongside those more hesitant to get involved. They combined that with wanting a multi-generation interactive experience that would help those present reminisce about past traditions while experiencing new ones they could add to their repertoire. From the décor to the food, from the sounds to the talented performers (the majority of whom were CBI members), everything came together for what has been called an absolutely extraordinary experience.

In every way this evening was a true labor of love. The tremendous success of the evening can be attributed to many factors: great vision and leadership, talented members who graciously shared their extraordinary connection to our congregation, and passionate guests who generously bought into House Parties, purchased Creative Auction experiences (again all donated by our members) and enthusiastically raised their bidder numbers to donate to our Mitzvah Moment. Final numbers are not available at press time, but we are happy to share that early projections have us netting over $230,000 – which far exceeds our stated goal.

Included in this Bulletin is a list of those whose involvement helped make this evening so memorable. While everyone deserves special recognition, additional shout outs need to go to of course Brad and Michelle Tonkin and also Marcy Tonkin, who kept sharing creative ideas and generously donating in every way possible, Cantor Ida Rae Cahana who, following Michelle’s lead and in addition to sharing her beautiful voice, helped envision the event and then recruited participants and orchestrated the evening’s performances, Eric Friedenwald-Fishman who, whether as Tevye or speaking from his own heart, demonstrates time and again his love and passion for CBI that makes us all proud and Marisa Reby who joined our staff in July as our Engagement Coordinator and led by example demonstrating from her very first day – what it really means to be engaged. From all of us to all of you, Thank You, Thank You and Thank You again, you have truly created a new Tradition for Congregation Beth Israel.
