Welcome to November’s About Thetford

Christmas is most definitely around the corner, evidently

so, judging by the abundance of Christmas Fayre’s

taking place this month, highlighted on page 20. And of

course the annual Christmas Light’s Switch-on, taking

place on the 27th November. Remember this year as you

busily go about your Christmas shopping to support local

retailers wherever possible, particularly given that for

every £1 spent with a local retailer, 63p on average stays

in the local economy. And of course, if you’re buying from

advertisers seen here, please do mention the magazine.

There’s very much a Remembrance theme to this

month’s edition with full details of the Remembrance

Parade on Sunday 8th November, and the concert on

Friday 6th. Our ‘community group’ focus for the month

is the Salvation Army, with one of their volunteers Tilly

Swaep being recognised as a ‘Community Hero’. Talking

of heroes, a special report by Philip Bujack on the Polish

We are very pleased to announce that this month, not one but two Community Heroes have been awarded this title, in reflection of their fantastic contribution to our community. October’s ‘Hero’ is Wendy Serjeant and November’s is Tilly Swaep.

Tilly SwaepTilly, is a woman well known and recognised in Thetford,and who can often be seen outside St Cuthbert’s Church on the fundraising stall during the week - a demonstration of her dedicated and invaluable work with the local Salvation Army. Tilly has been an avid supporter of the Salvation Army which has changed the lives of many community members, bringing hope back into their lives. Tilly’s involvement has spanned over the years from helping with coffee mornings to promoting and spreading the good work of the charity. Tilly has become a living example of Christian values and one who thinks nothing of throwing herself into fundraisingevents and being an active charity group member. Tilly brings and instills positivity and humour to every day and her enthusiasm for community work is wholly impressive. For many years Tilly has embodied Christian teachings and devoted a huge part of her life to the charity. Something that we believe is highly moving and which should be recognised.

Wendy Serjeant David Osborne, a local Historian and former student of Wendy’s, has nominated Wendy for the CommunityHero title, as someone who for decades has demonstrated excellent community spirit. David says, “I have known Wendy for around 55 years, she is such an enthusiastic and inspiring person who never gives up. She is a very intelligent lady who has helped many young people over the years”. Many

community members may remember Wendy fromThetford Secondary Modern, where she was involved in an abundance of after school music and drama clubs. Her community work has not stopped there, Wendy has participated in many community based projects such as the Thetford Elders Luncheon Club, Age Concern and Action for Children. She is also a Licensed Reader involved in the Fountain of Life Network and hasexcelled at being an ambassador for our town. More recently Wendy has taken an active role as the projectleader of Thetford Methodist Players Community organising and presenting entertaining drama performances for the local town folk. Wendy has worked without complaint over the years taking a practical approach to each and every project, motivating morale and developing Thetford’s community spirit. Echoing David’s view and the view of many community membersthat know her, Wendy is a true inspiration to the entire community and a massive thank you is due for all of the hard work that you have achieved over the years!

Christmas Light Sponsorship 2015As explained in previous years it costs over £13,000 to have the lights and Christmas trees put up and taken down again. In addition, there are always replacement lights required, with the Council looking to purchase additional lights in the future following feedback from the community. Whilst the Council are aware of the financial restraints on budgets, we are very keen to continue with this very long tradition which the children have to come to love and expect. We are therefore seeking donations from local businesses and the community to assist with this cost.

Thetford’s Christmas Light Switch On 2015This year, the ceremony to switch on the Christmas lights will take place in front of the Guildhall on the Market Place, Thetford on Friday 27th November 2015 at 6.00pm.

The Town Crier will lead the countdown with the Mayor of Thetford, Councillor Robert Kybird performing the Light Switch On. Join Elsa and Anna for a Magical Experience of singing, storytelling, face painting and temporary tattoos in the Large Court of the Guildhall (a charge of £2.00 per person applies, face painting is extra). Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Peppa & George Pig and Carl the Minion will also be on the Market Place after the light switch on to meet everyone and have their pictures taken.

There will be an eclectic mix of traditional Christmas craft, market stalls and food stalls in Guildhall Street by the Market Place from 4.00pm until 8.00pm. A traditional Christmas Continental Market will line the pedestrianised areas of Tanner Street and Riverside Walk. Larry Gray Funfairs will supply a selection of children’s rides and stalls on Well Street.

Father Christmas will be in his grotto on King Street and this year will be joined by two of his reindeer friends. Come and meet Father Christmas and deliver your Christmas letter!

The Ancient House Museum on White Hart Street will be open from 5.00pm - 9.00pm with an Edwardian Christmas themed event. Discover life in Thetford during the first wartime Christmas of the Great War through an evening of craft and fun activities. This activity forms part of the Thetford Remembers 1914 – 1918 project using public funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Entrance and all activities free.

The Parade will arrive at the MarketPlace at 10.35am for the Service of Remembrancefollowed by a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the War Memorial. After the Wreath Laying Ceremony there will be a March Past in Well Street. Everyone is welcome to attend.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Thetford branch of the RoyalBritish Legion will be holding an Annual General Meeting at 7pm on the 4th November at the club

premises,Market Square, followed by a branch meeting. All members are invited to attend, support your branch and club, your input is important. A reminder that the annual Remembrance Concert will be held at the Carnegie Rooms on the evening of the 6th November, doors open at 6:30 pm. Tickets will be on sale at the Legion Club the week prior to the event. All those taking part in the Remembrance Parade, please assemble as usual at the Argos/Tanner Street car park area no later than 10.15am.

In February 2017, the RAF Regiment will celebrate its 75th Anniversary. As a contribution towards these celebrations, the Association of RAF Regiment Warrant Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers has undertaken ‘Project 17’.

Project 17 is a fund raising venture with the aim of commissioning a fine art piece in Bronze and Granite, comprising an inverted Rifle and Bayonet, driven into the ground, with a combat helmet mounted on the butt of the weapon. It is an

updated version of the time honoured way in which the unmarked battlefield graves of the fallen were identified.At RAF Honington, there is a wonderful memorial to those RAF Regiment personnel who lost their lives, either on operations

or during peacetime activities. RAF Honington often hosts the families of those who are honoured here, either on the anniversary of their loss or at a particular time of the year. A short distance behind the memorial is the Garden of Reflection. This is a small garden area with benches, where they can sit, pause for thought and reflect. This association hopes to have the

sculpture added to the area of the Garden of Reflection, in January 2017.I do hope you will agree that this is a very worthwhile cause, and will help to bring a great deal of comfort

to the visiting families of those who gave their all, and made the ultimate sacrifice. We will remember them, we must remember them.

Visit to Battlefields for Grammar School Pupils

Thetford Grammar School’s historians have justreturned from the First World War Battlefields after paying their respects to former pupils who died in the Great War. This annual trip is part of the History syllabusand is an important event in the school’s calendar. Before embarking on the trip the students study the reasons for the war and the backgrounds of Thetford Grammar School old boys who lost their lives. The visit started at Thiepval where the names of nine Old Thetfordians are listed on the Memorial to the missing.The students then held their own commemoration ceremony at the grave of one of the school’s former pupils. They also learnt about trench warfare and visited the sites of some of the most significant events of the first day of the Battle of the Somme. On the second day the group moved on to the Ypres region to explore the events of the three battles that occurred there and to pay our respects to the Old Boys who died in this area of the Western Front. The tour also provided the opportunityfor some of the pupils to visit the graves of relatives killed in the War. The highlight of this year’s visit was participating in the world famous Menin Gate ceremonyat Ypres. This unique event takes place every night

of the year, when the Last Post is played by buglers from the city’s fire brigade under the massive memorialarch. Year 9 pupil James Blackman, accompanied by Mr McGahan, the school’s Bursar, laid a wreath on behalf of the school, while the special guest on the trip, Pipe Major Ray Russell, played the bagpipes during the ceremony Many students find the tour moving and poignant. Miss Bailey, Thetford’s Grammar School’s Head of History, said that “the opportunity to pay our respects to the Old Boys of our school who fought and died in the conflict enables students to see a more personal dimension of the conflict”.

Spotlight on; the Salvation Army

In keeping with the Remembrance / Service personnel theme for this month’s edition, we will be shining the spotlight on the Salvation Army as part of our monthly look at local voluntary and community groups that work so tirelessly in our local area.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of The SalvationArmy, a movement started by pioneers William and Catherine Booth in the East End of London in 1865. Here in Thetford, the Salvation Army is the thriving hub of Christian efforts to continue the founder’s legacy, engaging with the local community, supporting those that are most vulnerable and marginalised. The Salvation Army is active in 126 countries, with an abundance of smaller community groups distributed all over. Thetford is fortunate enough to have such a wonderful charity, based in our own town, that has truly made a difference to this community. Thetford Corps and Community centres offer a range of activities and services within the local community. People can getinvolved in all sorts of ways through volunteering with fundraising initiatives, attending church services and helping with local activities. The charity have a close affiliation with St Cuthbert’s Church, where they

regularly hold charitable events such as the recent Harvest Festival to raise funds for the Salvation Army’sChristmas Toys and Tins appeal. Open every day whether it is for a Coffee Morning, the infamous Craft Cuppa, Band Practice or Bible Studies, the community group certainly have a lot on! What is more, the Charity Shop located just next door is open for all to explore!! The perfect community hub to meet up with other members or meet new members, to sit and enjoy a cup of tea or even have a wander around the shop! The community group continues its work thanks to the fantastic volunteers who truly value The Salvation Army ethos. The Salvation Army are currently organising events for the festive period so be sure to keep a look out in future editions of the About Thetford magazine.

INNER WHEEL

The October Inner Wheel meeting was held on Thursday October 1st at the Wereham House Hotel. During the business session, it was decided to buy a baby's car seat for children who have orthopaedic problems. This will be donated to the Fracture Clinic of West Suffolk Hospital where it will be loaned out to those who need it.

The talk was given after a delicious meal, by this year's District Chairman, Catherine Forsdyke. Catherine is a multitalented lady who originally trained as a nurse and midwife, and eventually became deputy head of department at Ipswich College. She is an ordained priest, been a member of Rotoract and is a member of Inner Wheel and Rotary. Now, she is inspiring us all to support the aims of Inner Wheel, and to be a unitedforce in upholding the traditions, but also to be able adapt the movement to the modern day.


On Monday September 21st, Thetford Lions Club, with the much appreciated support of the Staniforth Trust, unveiled a Peace Pole in the King's House Gardens, Thetford. The pole was unveiled by Robert Kybird, Mayor of Thetford, and Nathan Greatbanks, a young designerfrom Thetford Grammar School who won a competitionto design the pole. Nathan also undertook the construction of the pole, which was made out of solid oak which was sourced locally. There are many Peace Poles throughout the world and each bears the words 'May Peace Prevail on Earth' and the Thetford pole also has the word 'Peace' translated into 12 languages,representing the various communities in the town. The arms bear the words 'Peace in the world, Peace in the Community, Peace in the Family, Peace in the Heart.' September 21st was chosen because it is the United Nations Day for Peace.

This is the first such pole in Norfolk. Thetford Lions Club would also like to thank L Fulchers, local Funeral Directors who kindly supplied the Plaques which adorn the pole.

The October meeting of the Thetford Society welcomedVince Thurkettle a local

forester who spoke on the “mystery” of the RendleshamForest UFO’s - a story that led to a 13 page spread in the News of the World in 1983, head-lined“UFO lands in Suffolk - and that’s official”. Vince was able to give a less sensational explanation - that the beams from Orford Ness lighthouse were what the US airmen had seen that night in the forest and the marks on the ground were not made by the landing of a strange craft but were most likely rabbit scrapings. Vince admitted that the UFO world does not like being questioned but ended with a quote from astronomer Patrick Moore “I do not doubt that there is life on otherworlds but there is no evidence that they have ever been here.” The next meeting is on November 3rd at URC when Melissa Hawker from the Ancient House Museum will speak on a Victorian Christmas.

ROTARY NEWS

Rotarians entertained their partners to a meal at Edmunds Restaurant in West Suffolk College. First year students prepared and served a four

course mixed Mediterranean menu with a good choice and very good quality food. The service was excellent and cheerful, it was difficult to believe that the students only began their course in September.

Rotarians, with their partners’ help, manned a licensed snack bar at Nunnery Fields on the Saturday that the Tour of Britain passed over Nuns Bridges. £477 was raised for charities supported by Rotary. We thank members of the public for their suport.

GRAMMAR SCHOOL RAISES MACMILLAN FUNDS

Thetford Grammar School has raised an impressive£645 for the Macmillan Cancer Charity recentlywith a special fundraising coffee morning.

The event was organised by the school’s very own charity representatives along with the Head of Religious Studies, Miss Dunsmore. During the mid-morning break the school’s canteen was full of students and teachers showing their support by purchasing a wide variety of cakes ranging from apple muffins to chocolate biscuits and much more. Overall the day was a great success and Miss Dunsmore said the she was proud of all the charity representatives who gave so much to support this worthy cause. School charity representative Temi Ade Coker also said that they would like to say “thank you to everyone for showing their support”.

Talk focuses on a great invention

Veteran member of Thetford Probus Club and well-known local business man, Brian Boughton ran a family printers for over 30 years, but less well-known is his passion for photography.

So when he gave a talk at the club’s October meeting, he treated fellow members to a unique insight into one of the 19th century’s great inventions and described how it evolved to be such a key part of our lives in this digital age. What made Mr Boughton’s talk especiallyfascinating was his long family connections with photography, which enabled him to circulate among members, treasured old photographs including one taken by his grandfather in 1875. He explained that in the early days of photography it was something that only ‘professionals’ did as plate cameras and processeswere complex. The first major step in making it an affordable and accessible hobby for ‘amateurs’ came with introduction of roll film that could be used in more compact cameras , then developed through chemists or photographic shops. The most famous of the early cameras was the Kodak Box Brownie and Mr Boughtondelighted members by letting them handle one from his impressive collection of yesteryear cameras. He also spoke about other fascinating family connections with Thetford, such as his great grandfather reputedly being the first person in the town to own a car, a 1898 Benz, and a great uncle who was the first driver to be fined for speeding (12mph) in the early 1900s. While Mr Boughton’s talk gave an intriguing glimpse of the past age of photography, he also brought it right up to present time with stunning examples of his digital photographs along with the cameras that have brought us from the Brownie to today’s single lens reflex, compact and extreme action cameras that, combinedwith drones, are making aerial photography commonplace. Talks organiser Danny Jeffrey thanked the speaker and led members in their usual show of appreciation.

When the past photograph of the Star pub in the Bury Road was taken about 1930, the Richer family were the publicans. The Richer family were licensees of the Star

for 59 years, the last was Mr A. Richer who retired in 1939. The Star closed its doors in January 1970 and converted into two dwellings soon afterwards.

After a busy Summer - touring its Music Theatre show Masked and hosting a sixty plus group of 3 - 16 year olds for the two day Singing Workshop A Menagerie of Songs - Thetford Voices is now looking to Christmas.

A small group of older singers is already in rehearsal to join Thetford Singers for their Christmas Concert on December 16th and preparations are in hand for theannual Christmas Carolling holiday workshop. So we are once again looking for young singers to join us on Tuesday 22nd December. Singers aged from 6 - 16 years are invited to meet at 11.30 in the Williamson Hall of Thetford Grammar School to rehearse carols and Christmas songs before an afternoon travelling by coach to perform in residential homes across Thetford.While singing we shall be collecting for EACH and the children at Quidenham Hospice. We end the day in concert in St Peter’s Church at 6.30pm (to 7.15pm) with guests joining us to perform for families, friends and members of the public. Recently I was early for a train and walked right down the platform at Thetford Railway Station. What a stunning display of flowers! How impressed travellers to and from Norwich must be. So thank you to the gardeners – and all the other people who have transformed corners, planted bulbs along the roadside and done all the other jobs that help us feel pride in our town. November is the month for clearing up – leaves, plant pots, dead stalks and so forth. It is particularly important to keep ponds clear of leaves as the water becomes sour and lifeless if they decompose there. On the veg patch, clearing the land of weeds and turning the soil over is the task, giving us less efficient gardenersanother chance to clear out perennial weeds. Don’t put this off as the ground becomes difficult to work in the cold and wet days to come. You can still plant garlic and autumn onions. Certain types of broad bean can be planted in a sheltered area; Aquadulce is the most well known of these but read the advice on the packet to be sure. They will not live through a long periodof severe frost but generally survive to give an early crop just when it’s needed. Earlier in the year we heard a lot about Giant Hog Weed though I don’t think this has spread to our area yet. It made me think of the plants that cause us trouble – nettles being an obviousexample. More serious can be euphorbia which I grow in the garden for its architectural shape and variety of colour. This has a milky sap which is an irritant and causes blistering in contact with eyes, nose and mouth. Gloves and other protective covering, especially glasses, are a good idea if you need to prune this plant

Having said that, apparently poinsettia is a member of this family and I shall certainly be buying some plants nearer Christmas but perhaps will treat them with a little more caution.The club meeting this month is on Thursday 26th at 7.30 in the United Reformed Church hall. We have a speaker from the Shadwell Stud this month which should be of general interest and non-members are welcome. Thetford Community Fly-tipping Project

Every community in the United Kingdom suffers from incidents of fly-tipping, and Thetford is no exception. For whatever reason, fly-tipping as been on the increaseover recent years, resulting in increased costs for local Councils, Housing Associations and landowners alike. There has also been a human cost too with the vast majority of residents upset to see their communities blighted by such debris. Many items that are discarded are also of a hazardous nature and damaging to wildlife.

To help combat this growing problem, local resident groups in Thetford teamed up with the Safer ThetfordAction Group (STAG) to apply for funding from Breckland Council. This funding request was succesfuland through local charity the ‘Thetford Community Association’ - the project is well underway. The idea is to highlight legal and safe ways to dispose of unwanted items - in many ways tackling some of the myths that exist also detail the law in relation to the dumping of items and the large fines and legal repercusions that exist. The project also hopes to encourage residents to take pride in where they live, through the organising of community clear-ups for example and encouraging people to report such issues to the relevant authoritiesto ensure prompt removal. There’s also an element of the project that involves visiting schools and youth groups and helping to educate the next generation about the proper disposal of items and respect for our community. Recently, local resident - Barbara Bysouth was successfully recruited to become the new ‘West Thetford Fly-tipping Officer’ and will be working through the TCA on behalf of local residents groups on this 12 month pilot to reduce fly-tipping. Each month Barbara hopes to share with you her work and communicate some useful information at the same time. Here’s Barbara’s first update for November:

I have only been in my new role for just over a month and already I am realising the enormity of the fly tipping problem. To open your curtains in the morning to find that someone has dumped a pile of rubbish or items of furnitureunder a tree outside your house is bad enough but to see it cleared by Serco and then more rubbish appearis very frustrating. Over a two week period, this is exactlywhat has happened in Fir Road, where I live. Garage areas on all three estates are a big problem for the Flagship Rangers. Many people dump larger items of all kinds in or around them, as the photobottom left shows of one such unused garage. The truck load pictured below was removed from a garage area on St John’s Way. In the past month I have investigated and reported 15 incidents of fly tipping to Breackland Council and 5 to Flagship Housing. Last week alone Flagship Rangers cleared nearly one and a half tons of tipped items from the three estates.

Bin it for the Food Bank!

In the run-up to Christmas, a particularly difficult time for families struggling to make ends meet, the chosen charity for Breckland’s Bin it for Good project is Thetford Food Bank.

The Bin it for Good initiative is designed to lessen litter on the ground in Thetford whilst boosting funds for local charities; organisers are asking everyone to make an extra effort to spread the anti-litter message and help raise funds for this deserving charity. The project, which is organised by Breckland Council in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy and Serco, and backed by the Town Council, was launched in Thetford on 1 September. Three local charities will benefit, each featuring on litter bins in Thetford for one month. At the end of their month each charity receives a sum based on the reduction in litteron the streets during that time. Thetford’s RiversdaleCentre and Charles Burrell Centre, who featured on bins during September and October, have both been awarded £150 through the initiative. Thetford Food Bank will feature on litter bins during November, the final month of the project. There will be an additional call on the services of the Food Bank in the run up to and during the Christmas period, and all the money raised through the project will be put to good use. The charity provides short term emergency food provision, mainly to those in the Thetford area. Fifty volunteers keep this vital service going and distribute food to around 2,000 people a year, over a third of whom are children.

The Thetford litter reduction scheme is one of seven pilots run by local authorities throughout the country this autumn as part of a national Keep Britain Tidy project, funded by the Wrigley Company. Brecks Building Skills – round two

Do you own, work with or just love heritage buildings?Following on from last year’s successful series of courses the Breaking New Ground Landscape Partnership Scheme, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will be working with Orchard Barn EnvironmentalEducation CIC to deliver another series of heritagebuilding skills workshops aimed at owners and managers of old buildings.

Hosted by West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village, the feedbackfrom last year’s participants has been fantastic. A short film celebrating the first year’s courses has even been made (available on the Breaking New ground YouTubechannel). From lime mortars to timber frames, participants can learn how to look after heritage buildings through presentations, demonstrations and hands-on activities. Day schools will be led by heritage experts in the historical surroundings of the West Stow Anglo Saxon Village. Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund, places on these day schools are just £5 per day.

Thetford Police have worked within the Safer Thetford Action Group for a number of years,

the aim of this is to address issues raised within the community and work to resolve them alongside partner agencies including Breckland District Council, Thetford Town Council and local housing authorities.

Local residents groups are represented at these meetings and the public are encouraged to attend the quarterly public priority setting meeting. The next public STAG meeting will be occuring on Thursday 7th January 2016, from 7pm at the Guildhall, Thetford. Whilst we encourage people to attend these and engage with us directly I am keen that the public pass on timely information regarding any issues that affect them, rather than wait for the meetings. Winter Skin

It is at this time of year we begin to experience changes to our skin. It may appear much drier, become chapped and much more hyper sensitive to things, especially the lips and hands. Products and creams that we have used in the past and been perfectly fine with may now irritate the skin causing inflammation, redness and even itching.

With the holiday season fast approaching and parties we start eating richer foods and drink more alcohol and probably more hot caffeine beverages to keep warm which in turn has a dehydrating effecton the skin. Other factors which cause changes may be triggered by, a change in the environment, cold weather, central heating which can all cause dryness. We try to overcome these effects by applying more moisturiser but this in turn may not be the best solution as the moisturiser may be too rich, which can make the skin feel congested insteadof what we really wanted which was hydration! The Poles Arrive in Norfolk - from Siberia to Thetford

In July 1945 the British government withdrew recognition of the Polish Government in Exile (a government that had been housed in London since 1939 supporting the cause of freedom for the world and for Poland) and went on to then recognize the Russian backed government in Poland. As if this was not an insult and shock enough for the Poles who had fought so bravely and given so much in the fight against Nazi Germany, the British, under pressure from Russia, went on to at first refuse Polish forces permission to march in the Victory Parade in London and then try to placate them with a partial presence which of course they did not accept. It is an almost forgotten and disgraceful fact of our past that not even the brave surviving Poles of the RAF squadrons who had played such a vital part in the Battle of Britain were allowed to march in the parade.

This left the British with just one more problem - what to do with the large Polish Army still camped in Italy and the thousands of Poles already in the UK. They were of course a highly experienced and armed series of fightingunits now ready to start the next war to liberate their own country not from the Germans any more but now from the Russians. The choices were to send them back to Poland - where thousands would undoubtedly be executed as the 14,000 Polish officers and intellectuals had been at Katyn in May 1940 by the Russians - or to enable them to come to or in many cases return to Britain.It was decided to take the latter option - no doubt through necessity as certainly many Poles would have refused to return to a now Russian controlled Poland, a Poland they had fought to free from Nazism and now at Yalta in February 1945 saw handed to the Russians on a plate. Churchill agreed that Russia could keep the lands ceded to them in the 1939 Nazi – Soviet Pact. But underpressure he went even further and agreed that the homes of Poles from Kresy – in the East – should also be given to the Russians leaving women and childrenat the mercy of the NKVD – Soviet Secret Police. It is another forgotten fact that 30 officers and men from 11 Corps committed suicide when they heard of this betrayalknowing that their homes and families were now gone. Churchill faced huge opposition in Parliament for his actions and a three day debate saw a vote of confidencein his government. Twenty Five MP’s signed an

amendment protesting at the total acceptance of Russian domination of Poland. In fact it is interesting to note that one felt so strongly that he resigned from his seat – the Member of Parliament for Norwich, Henry Strauss.

It took until 1947 and a Labour administration to pass the Polish Re-settlement Act. This was the first ever mass immigration legislation in British History. It came about to solve the problem of what to do with the Poles – given that Stalin reneged on promises to Churchill and controlled the whole of Poland which he turned into communist state. Churchill had in fact tried to persuade Poles to return to Poland – something he agreed with Stalin to do – and 100,00 did return and many were lost to history and the NKVD. My own grandmother wrote to my father when he arrived in Britain asking him not to return home as she said there was nothing but miseryand a bullet waiting for him. How hard it must have been to have endured so much to then realise that you would probably never see your family again. Of course this was not apparent at the time. Perhaps Churchill and the allies would force Stalin to pull out of Poland and perhaps within a year or two they could go home. Of course this was not to happen until after 1982.

Many of the Poles that arrived in England in 1946 had had unbelievable journeys. Some had been in the PolishArmy when they were over run in 1939, made their way to either France - where they had fought in 1940 and forced out at Dunkirk and perhaps been sent to Scotland where the first camps were opened – there is a significant Polish presence in Scotland today which had its roots in these training areas. Others had escaped to North Africa and joined the Polish Corps that formed up in Syria and still more had walked from Siberia where Stalin had interned them after his invasion of Poland. Stalin was persuaded to release them to fight when Nazi Germany invaded Russia in

1941 – but they had to walk to the war and tens of thousands died on this forgotten journey to the MiddleEast to meet up with the Allies. Some of those that survived the fierce fighting in Italy, went on to land at Normandy, fight at Falaise and fought right up to the end of the war. Others were those men that came to the United Kingdom in 1946. In Norfolk this specificallymeant eight camps in and around the Thetford area. These were; The 1st Medical Company (1Komp Sanitaria) at Weeting Hall near Thetford, Divisional school of Agriculture of the 3rd Lancers (Gimn Rolnicze 3 DSK) at Bodney airfield, 3rd Carpathian Division Heavy Machine Gun Battalion (3 Karp CKM) at Riddlesworth and Riddlesworth Hall School, Regiment of Light Artillery at The Quadrilateral Camp, Thetford, 3rd Carpathian Regiment of Light Artillery (3rd DSK Pulk Artylerii Lekkej) at Dixon East camp, 3rd Carpathian Engineer Company (3 Karp Saperow) at London Road Camp near Thetford, Education Company of 3rd Lancers (Gmn iLiceum 3 DSK) at Bodney Airfield and 13th Supply Company (13 Dyw Komp Zaop) at Shakers Wood near Thetford.

Altogether in Norfolk we can estimate around 4,000 Polish troops arrived in the first phase. Between 1946 and 1950 it took 50 or so large troop ships and 25 rail transports to bring the Poles and some of their families from Italy to England. An advanced guard of men for each of the 200 camps found conditions very variable. Many were is a complete state of disrepair, most were corrugated iron and asbestos roofed barracks, few facilities and no hot water. These organising troops did their best with few resources to make these camps habitable as the men and their uniforms, equipment and even families arrived. They had been used as camps for American troops, British troops and often German and Italian prisoners of war. Most were in a terrible state of repair when the Poles arrived and they had to set about rebuilding them for families not just soldiers. In the earlydays contact with the local population was limited and experiences varied. In some areas the Poles were welcomed and successfully integrated, learnt English (harder for the adults than the children) and married local girls and began their new lives in a country that ten years previously they knew very little about. The children and grandchildren of those first families are scattered in good numbers all over the United Kingdom and in Norfolk as much as anywhere. In other areas of course they were resented, jobs were protected for local men and no effort was made to understand what these people were doing there let alone who they were.

Famous cases in London were where former Generals such as Stalislaw Sosobowski whose Poles parachuted into and fought at Arnhem could only get jobs as waitersor in his case a factory worker. His troops would salutehim on the streets and stand to attention when he passed them on his way to his warehouse. No special consideration was given, offered or even thought of whether a General or a private. Officers with rows of medals and ordinary soldiers alike walked out of the camps and into anonymity – and they are forgotten today. By the mid 1950's there were still 50 camps in use - larger ones that had assimilated the smaller ones - and the last camp closed in 1969.

At one such camp at Riddlesworth hall near Thetford, it is planned, with the support of local people, to unveil a memorial stone near the site of the long lost camp. This will be a small marker as a testament to who these men and women were and for future generations to reflect on what happened there in 1946. For those families with Polish roots in and around Thetford, this is a plea to hunt through your loft and look out photographs of Grandad, or even dad and see if you have any of him in a camp in this country. Who knows, It could be Riddlesworth and I would love to see them.

Introduction: The Government’s widely publicised new pension freedoms started on 6 April 2015. Many pensioners throughout the country have been exercising their right to cash in all or part of their retirement funds. However, it is important to be aware that, apart from the first 25% of the pension pot, the withdrawal of retirement funds is subject to income tax.

Income tax liabilityFor the current tax year, broadly speaking, everyone is entitled to a tax free personal allowance of £10,600. The first £31,785 of income above this allowance is taxed at 20%. The next slice of income up to £150,000 is taxed at 40%. Income above £150,000 is taxed at 45%. There is also a further complication in that people with an income above £100,000 see their personal allowance gradually tapered away. The tax rates for dividend income are different but that is beyond the scope of this article. For example, let’s look at Jeremy whose only income is a state pension of £10,000 a year. Jeremy has a retirement fund of £200,000 and in November 2015 he decides to cash it all in. As a result, Jeremy’s income tax liability for the 2015/16 tax year is calculated as follows: £State pension 10,000Withdrawn pension fund 200,00025% tax free amount (50,000) 150,000Taxable income 160,000Personal allowance – tapered to nil ______- 160,000

Jeremy would have been better off if he had staggered his pension withdrawals over a number of tax years. This way, more would be taxed at the basic rate of income tax instead of being taxed at the higher and additional rates.

PAYE: The pension provider will deductPAYE from the amount paid to Jeremy. In most cases the pensionprovider will operate a Month 1 emergencyPAYE code and too much tax will be deducted. In Jeremy’s case, the amount deducted under PAYE using the emergency code will be £65,948, therefore resulting in tax overpaid of £7,805 (ie £65,948 less tax £58,143).

Reclaiming the overpaid taxJeremy has a choice of how to reclaim the overpaid tax from HMRC. He could wait until the end of the tax year and complete a self-assessment tax return or he could wait until HMRC carry out their end of year tax reconciliation process. They will send Jeremy a form P800 which should show the amount of the overpaymentand they will issue a repayment to him. HMRC have confirmed that the P800 process will apply in these circumstances but this could take several months. If he does not want to wait to get his money from HMRC there is now a system in place for this. In Jeremy’s case, he would need to complete a form P50Z and send this to HMRC who will then issue a repayment to Jeremy within 30 days. Please note, whilst the P50Z form was appropriate to Jeremy’s circumstances, that form will not be appropriate in all cases. The form P50Z is only appropriate for those who have no other income (other than state pension). If you have other taxable income and you take your whole pension pot at once, you need to fill in form P53Z. If you have other taxable income and you are taking out only part of the pension pot, then you need to fill in form P55. All these forms are only available where no subsequent withdrawals are going to be made in the tax year.

3. Readable: It’s importantto find the right tone for your personality’s business. The great thing about socialmedia is that it can beslightly more informal however spelling, grammarand structure (short and sweet is always best) are all still important. Take your time, it will take a while to find your voice and to attract an audience but perseverance is the key. And don’t be afraid to change it up now and then: a different voice can add a new perspective to a subject.

Show your personality: People are far more likely to write a Facebook post asking you a question than ring a business phone number, also provide ideas of how your products can be used, complementary products etc. new products etc., reviews of your products by real people, also a way to show your business' personality: There should be a coherent thread, should not voice negative opinions of competitors or Don't be afraid to explore some other issues, it's always nice to include some info that people can use. Long posts occasionally can be great if you find that you have a lot to say but short and sweet means people are more likely read all.

5. Build relationships: Don’t forget to build relationships with businesses already with a following, it could be the perfect way to gain new readers and the beginning of a beautiful friendship start thinking partnership and not competition!

On October 1st Stoptober called on smokers all over England to quit smoking. This campaign, initiated by Public Health England, ran for four weeks with research suggesting that anyone who can stay off cigarettes for 28 days is five times more likely to quit for good!

Supporting the Stoptober campaign is META (Mobile Europeans Taking Action), a Stop-Smoking-Service run by Keystone Development Trust in Thetford. The service, which is commissioned by the Public Health Department at Norfolk County Council, offers support to migrants wanting to kick the habit and is delivered by NHS-trained advisors who are themselves migrant workers. META doesn’t believe in a “one glove fits all” approach as Stop Smoking Advisor Jurij Sverckov explains: “We try to find the right treatment for each person to identify the one that most suits them. Communication and building positive relationships with migrants who want to give up smoking are the key elements of my job.” As well as providing the initial support to combat nicotine addiction, META helps clients to stay on track. Their advisors work in close partnership with Health Trainers at The Healthy Living

Centre to address related issues such as concerns about weight gain when giving up smoking.

Jonathan Walker, Director of Community Services at Keystone Development Trust, welcomes the Stoptober campaign: “Stoptober is an ideal opportunity for anyonethinking about giving up smoking. A campaign that encompasses the whole of the country might just provide the incentive to take the first step and get specialist advice and support. Most smokers are aware of the risks to their health, yet they keep smoking. New legislation coming into force next month will make it a criminal offence to smoke in a car occupied by a child. Smoke fumes in a car are 11 times more concentrated than in an open space.

A month or so ago we had a call from the Tesco Store in Brandon asking for our help. They had already been in touch with the RSPCA, but they didn't have anyone to send out, so it was Cats Protection to the rescue!

The staff at the store thought there may be a cat trapped behind two of their huge storage freezers in the warehouse at the back of the store. They couldn't hear anything, but they could smell urine. Fortunately we have a fosterer and volunteer who lives quite close to the store, so she went with her husband to investigate. There was indeed a cat stuck there, but as the freezers were about 10 feet deep, they couldn't reach him. What they needed was a grasper that the RSPCA use, but we don't have one of those and the vets we contacted only have a 3 foot long one. The volunteer's husband had a think about it and thought he could maybe make something similar. He went home to his garage and found a paint roller extension pole, and some rope and after a few hours work, hey presto, he had himself a grasper.

Back they went to the store armed with leather gloves, in case the cat was feral, a torch, a cat carrier and the cat catcher contraption and after a while they managed to put a loop of rope around the cat's neck and gently coax him out. A very smelly, bedraggled grey and white cat emerged and was put into the carrier and taken to the vet to be checked over. Unfortunately, he wasn't micro chipped, but he was a friendly boy who obviously belonged to someone. He was put into one of our cat pens. Shortly afterwards, our Lost and Found officer had a call from a lady whose cat had been missing for about a week. She lives behind the Tesco store. And lo and behold, he matched the description of the Tesco cat. The owner and Smokey as he is called, were reunited. He is only a year old and the lady was so pleased to see him again, as she had thought he had gone for good. I believe the Tesco store put together a get well hamperfor Smokey, containing all his favourite treats. We suggested to the lady that she get him micro chipped, in case he wanders off again.

“I’m struggling with around £18,000 worth of debt and wondered whether I’d be eligible for a Debt Relief Order. I know the limit used to be £15,000 but heard

that it was increasing. Is that right?”

A Debt Relief Order can be a way to help people out of unmanageable debt. On 1st October the debt limit for a DRO increased to £20,000 so you might now be eligible. You could qualify for a DRO if you don’t own your own home, have up to £1,000 worth of assets, a car worth no more than £1000 and have £50 or less left each month once you’ve paid your essentials. Debts such as magistrate’s court fines, student loans and child support maintenance aren’t covered by a DRO but credit card debt, overdrafts, loans and rent arrears are so check first whether you're eligible. The DRO lasts a year and during that time you don’t have to make any payments towards most debts included in your DRO. Your creditors can’t force you to pay off the debts either.

At the end of the DRO period your debts will be written off but you’ll still be responsible for paying off any debts that weren’t included in the DRO.

It’s also important to consider that while a DRO can help you deal with your debt, it may affect your creditrating and if during the 12 month period you borrowmore than £500 you have to tell the creditor about it.

Thetford Dolphins, in conjunction with Thetford Waterworld, held its annual Nifty 50s open event. With many of the counties top swimmers taking part in 207 events, the 49 Thetford Dolphins swimmers put in some excellent performances, with 5 first places and 77 personal bests. The winners were Alice Fasey 50m Breaststroke and Macauley Harvey 50m Backstroke, 50m Breaststroke,50m Butterfly and 100m IM. Well done to all the Dolphins who achieved personal bests.


Weaver wins Gold in National Competition

Thetford schoolboy Santiago Weaver did AttleboroughBoxing Club proud as he returned home from Rotherman with a national title!

The 16 year old Thetford Academy 6th form student claimed his gold medal after beating Connor Taylor of Jimmy Egans Gym on a split points decision in The Junior Development Championship under 75 kg final on Saturday 10th October. Weaver started strong giving Taylor a standing 8 count with an over hand right in the first round, in a show of strength, he out powered the much taller opponent. Weaver stayed close working well on the inside throughout the 2nd and 3rd rounds. The young boxer was overjoyed as the MC announced his victory.

Head Coach Jon Dennis said “A National Title is a great achievement for Santiago and the club, Santiago has worked extremely hard, putting in many hours in the gym and has massive potential. We are now looking forward to the NABC's where he will compete for a 2nd national title!

Attleborough Boxing Club Chairman Colin Kilby said; “It was a pleasure to watch Santiago box. He has trained and worked tirelessly. It was a well deserved win and I couldn’t be prouder of him”.

‘Ceroc-tober’ a review by About

Last month’s ‘Ceroc-tober’ sparked interest in the latest dance craze and what better way to discover what ‘Ceroc’ is, than to experience it first-hand!

This stylish dance is a fusion of many dance forms including, but not limited to salsa, Ballroom and LatinAmerican, Hip Hop, Street Dance, Musical Theatre, Tango and Jive. I have always been a lover of dance and participated in Ballet, Tap and Modern for a number of years from a young age. I couldn’t wait to take up this opportunity to get my dancing shoes back on!

Classes take place at the Thetford Carnegie Room, every Wednesday from 7.30pm – 10.30pm covering a range of abilities from beginner to intermediate and even giving the chance to let all lose and free style. Naturally I chose to try the beginner class not wantingto jump in at the deep end! The teachers were very encouraging and really boosted my confidence! Step by step, the class were shown how to move, jive and jiggle. It was the first class that I had ever attended that required a partner! Throughout the class I made numerous mistakes, but mistakes that were mere-ly laughed off (thankfully!) by my partner, before I knew it, we were twisting and moving around like dance floor for what I felt like was a scene from ‘Dirty Dancing’. Before I knew it, it was near to the end of the class… time for freestyle!
