Our year is flying by so quickly and staff, students and parents are working together to make Lord Tweedsmuir a very exciting and positive community! It was very nice to see so many parents attend our parent/teacher interview sessions. The next report card will be issued on Tuesday, December 2nd. On November 24th we will be having our Post-Secondary Day for grade 11 and 12 students. Also, McGill University will be here to give a presentation on November 17th at 2:20 pm in the counselling conference room, this is open to all interested students. Thursday, November 13th is the next PAC meeting and the Technology Department will be presenting and taking parents on a tour. Good luck to all of our teams that are heading into Fraser Valley and Provincial playoffs! Mr. A.J. Buggie Principal

Thanks to their support, we are able to offer our students a healthy meal or snack during the school day. Surrey Firefighters have set up a Charitable Society to raise funds to help the less fortunate in our community. Surrey Firefighters have donated over $1,000,000 to the Children’s Health Center at Surrey Memorial Hospital as well as $250,000 to the Surrey YMCA, $125,000 to the Centre for Child Development and $100,000 to the Surrey SFU campus. Have you paid your $50 graduation fee? If you plan on attending the Commencement Ceremony on Tuesday, June 23rd this fee must be paid by Friday, March 6, 2015.
Have you been measured for your gown for Commencement? It is important that the correct size (length) of gown is ordered for you. See Ms. Gagno in Room C311 ASAP. It takes less than a minute to be measured.
We are again planning a boat cruise for our 2015 Dry Grad Celebration. In order to reduce the cost to the grads, the Dry Grad Committee has several fundraisers on the go at the moment. In addition to the current fundraisers, we will be selling raffle tickets as well as hosting a Pub Night in the new year. The Raffle tickets will be available to the Grads to sell starting in the beginning of December with the draw at the end of February. 100% of the ticket sales from the raffle are for the Dry Grad. Thank you for a very generous donation of prizes! More details will be sent home to the grads and their parents shortly.
We are currently selling Gift Certificates (see order form in this newsletter) to raise funds. These gift certificates are available for a wide range of stores, restaurants and services. We will place our order the first week of December. The deadline to have orders to the office is November 28th. Gift Certificates will be available 4-5 business days after the date of order.
The annual Cookie, Pie, Pizza and Deserts Sale (see order form in this newsletter) has always proven to be a very popular fundraiser. Order forms must be returned to the office by Friday, November 14th and the orders will be at the school for pick up on Thursday, December 4th.
Christmas 2014 is quickly approaching. Included in this newsletter is an order form for a variety of Poinsettias. Please send your orders to the office attention Loretta by Thursday, November 20th and the plants will be at the school for pick up on Wednesday, December 11th.
We are beginning to contact companies for donations to Dry Grad. As personal contact appears to attract a favourable response, we are encouraging our Grade 12 parents to approach their
employers for contributions (cash, gift certificates, prizes, etc.). If you are self-employed and would like to support our requests, it would be greatly appreciated.
We continue to have accounts open at our two local bottle depots: Willowbrook Recycling at 19641 - 60th Avenue, and Cloverdale Bottle Depot (Encorp Recycling) 5534 - 176th Street. If you wish to donate your bottle returns to the “cause”, please let them know it is for L.T.S.S. Dry Grad.
Our next Dry Grad Committee meeting will be Wednesday, November 12th at 7pm in the Library. Parents and students of all grades are welcome to attend.

WE SHARE THE AIR ~ BE SCENT-AWARE Many Lord Tweedsmuir students and staff members have significant allergies and sensitivities to perfumes, aftershaves and other strong fragrances. Thank you for helping us contribute to a “SCENT SAFE” environment by refraining from wearing scented products. Absences Just a reminder to contact the main office in the morning if your child is going to be away that day. A note to classroom teachers is appreciated, however, it is only the office staff that can enter excused absences into the computer. Vacations During the School Year As extended absences seriously affect the teaching, learning and evaluation process, we strongly discourage parents from taking students on vacations during the school term. Our school policy on vacations and early departures, or removal of a student from regular attendance reads as follows:
“Schools cannot give permission to students to be away from class for reasons other than illness or family emergency. If it is judged essential by the parents that the student be absent for a period of time, then the consequences of such an action must be borne by the student. The consequences may be the requirement of writing final examinations, lowered grade standing, or possible failure. Students should consult a counsellor before a planned period of absence in order to familiarize themselves with the requirements of the school and subject teacher.”
Students must complete an application for long-term absence form. This is for absences of 3 or more days. These forms are available in the office.
Remembrance Day
When November comes with foggy dawns And frost stills the pressing life of green, The air takes on a bitter chill, The ground grows icy, hard and cold. Standing in the biting, cruel wind, On corners you may see them still: Elderly but upright people, With trays of artificial poppies. A remnant of a generation Forged of iron in war’s crucible, Enduring agonies of spirit, They sacrificed to save our future. Here we are, their children’s children, Heedless of the price they paid, Enjoying priceless freedoms purchased With their dreams, their tears, their blood. And on this day shall we disdain To wear a poppy and recall The debt we owe them for our freedom? We should remember every day.

JOB SEARCH STRATEGIES Whether it is your first part-time job or your first big career move, there are some tried and true tips to follow to find that perfect job opportunity. Really, it’s all about you and the preparation and determination that you put into finding yourself a job. Some of the strategies that can prove helpful in your job search are:
• Volunteer and keep in touch with the people that you meet (they are great references for your resume)!
• Need a place to volunteer? See the Career Centre.
• Develop your network. Tell everyone that you know that you are looking for work and what you are interested in. Don’t be shy!! Spread the news!
• Make sure your resume is up-to-date and polished and have someone review it to give you objective positive feedback. Oops! You don’t have a resume? Come by the Career Centre in C220 and get professional help in writing your own resume. The Career Centre is open before school, at lunch and after school for help, or book an appointment with Ms. Devaney.
• Use the resources available on the Internet and at employment centres.
• Search the newspapers for ads and articles on the kinds of jobs or the industry that you are interested in. Visit the Career Centre at school in room C220 and ask to use the computer/internet program a Career Cruising to help determine your strengths and interests and match careers to your traits. Stay positive with your search. If you are enthusiastic and keep at it, eventually you will find the job that will open the door to a great career! Want to speak to someone about where you are headed and what you should do to get there? Contact Ms. Kermode in C220 (no need for an appointment).
WHAT CAN THE CAREER CENTRE DO FOR YOU? ∗ Provide students with the opportunity to investigate a career of their choice.
∗ Providing students with a realistic look at the changes in the Labour Market.
∗ Providing students with job seeking and keeping skills (cover letter, resume, interview skills, etc.) and attitudes required for the work place.
∗ Providing students with a link to post-secondary education.
∗ Allowing students to receive dual credits by providing secondary and post-secondary course credit for students who successfully complete Secondary School Apprentice (SSA) and District Partnership Programs.
∗ Posting information for work or volunteer opportunities in the community.
∗ Posting information on Post-Secondary Schools and Scholarships.
∗ Helping students complete their Graduation Transitions Program.
∗ Helping students complete their Health 8 & 9 Program.
∗ Helping students complete their Daily Physical Activity Log.
