Why is it important that the church celebrate Hanukkah?

Did you know that Jesus celebrated Hanukkah?

God is calling His bride (the church) back to know her Jewish roots.  By doing this Christians can gain greater revelation of God’s Word, have deeper faith and be used more in these last days!

We should want to do what Jesus did because Jesus always did the will of the Father.  In John 10: 22-23 it says “Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter.  And Jesus walked in the temple,in Solomon’s porch.”

The Feast of Dedication is the feast known as Hanukkah which in Hebrew means to dedicate.  We see that Jesus who was Jewish and followed the law went to the Temple to observe the Feast of Dedication or Hanukkah.  So if Jesus celebrated Hanukkah shouldn’t we as followers of Christ observe this feast?

Historical Background

In the ancient world Israel was strategically located between Syria and Egypt, the bridge connecting Asia, Africa and Europe.  Therefore, control of Israel was crucial to having dominance in the region.  For two centuries these nations sought control of Israel.

In 171 B.C. Antiochus IV came to the Seleucid throne in Syria.  He was a cruel tyrant and believed that he was God in the flesh.  He had the same anti-Christ spirit as Hitler and he also hated the Jewish people.  He called himself Antiochus

Epiphanes (“God manifest”).  He wanted to unite his kingdom by imposing the Greek “Hellenistic” view which included language, thought and religion upon his subjects in an effort to force his rule over them through assimilation.

The Greek religion believed that nature was God and created many mythological gods.  Widespread immorality was promoted as essential in their worship of these gods.

The Orthodox party in Israel wanted to preserve Judaism and the pure worship of the God of Israel.  However, the other group from the progressive Hellenist party had no concern for the faith of their fathers, thereby, promoting corruption and a great spiritual divide in Israel.  Bribes were given to Antiochus Epiphanes by corrupt Israelites to obtain the office of high priest in Israel and also to have the faithful high priest killed.

Meanwhile the ambitions of Antiochus Epiphanes grew.  He wanted to gain more power and reunify the Grecian empire as in the days of Alexander the Great.  In 168 B.C. he almost had victory in taking over Egypt but was stopped by Rome.  He was forced to retreat from Egypt in great humiliation.  In a great rage during his way back to Syria he stopped in Jerusalem.  His rage increased when he saw the spiritual resistance to the Hellenization of Israel.

Without warning he ordered his general to destroy Jerusalem.  His full wrath and anger was directed towards the Jewish people.  Houses were burned, the walls of Jerusalem were destroyed and tens of thousands of Jews were killed or sold into slavery.  After that he destroyed the Temple on Mount Zion,

Hanukkah - “The Feast of Dedication”by Minister Lita Theodos, Living Waters Ministries

smashing it and stealing it’s golden vessels and treasures.  He also, erected an idol of Zeus, the supreme deity of the Greek gods on the holy altar in the courtyard.  This idol bore the face of Antiochus.

On Kislev 25 (December 25th) Zeus’ birthday Antiochus sacrificed a pig on the altar.  Forbidden by God, the pig was the ultimate abomination to the Jewish people.  Antiochus poured the pig’s blood in the Holy of Holies.  He also, poured it’s broth over the Torah (holy scrolls) before cutting them to pieces and burning them.  This shocked Israel and the nation was left utterly desolate.

The temple was converted to a shrine to Zeus and Antiochus forbid the practice of Judaism (observance of the Sabbath, dietary laws, circumcision etc.), otherwise, the penalty was death.  The Jewish people had to renounce their faith or be killed.

During this dark time thousands sacrificed their lives to remain true to their God.  In a tiny village of Modin near Jerusalem, Syrian soldiers built a pagan altar to Zeus and demanded that an elderly priest named Mattathias sacrifice a pig to the Greek gods in honor of Antiochus.  As the crowd watched Mattathias cried “Never” in defiance.  Then an apostate priest came forward requesting permission to offer the pig.  After that the people knew they would be forced to eat the flesh of the pig in identification with the offering.

Mattathias was outraged.  He grabbed the sword from the Syrian officer killing him and the apostate priest.  Then Mattathias’ five sons slew the remaining soldiers and pulled down the altar.  They then fled to the hills of Judea and the revolt began against the enemies of the one True God.

Many Israelites joined the revolt engaging in guerrilla warfare for three years.  During that time Mattathias died and leadership passed to his son, Judah who was a military genius.  He was called the “Maccabee” which comes from the Hebrew word makkevet meaning “hammer”.

Finally the Israelites overpowered the Syrian army and reopened the road to Jerusalem.  They wept when they saw the horrible desecration of the Temple and the hideous idol of Zeus with the face of Antiochus.  They went about cleansing the sanctuary and rebuilding the holy altar.  On Kislev

25, 165 B.C. exactly three years from the day of its defilement, they rededicated the altar to the Lord.

The Biblical Connection

Why is Hanukkah celebrated for 8 days?  Jewish tradition says that the Maccabees found only one day’s supply of unpolluted oil in the Temple for the golden lampstand which miraculously burned for eight days until a new supply of oil could be consecrated, hence the celebration for eight days.  This explanation was suggested centuries after the earliest historical accounts of the holiday and was probably not accurate.

The pattern for Hanukkah in scripture is based on the pattern of dedication which was always for eight days.  The object to be dedicated was sanctified for seven days and then on the eighth day it was holy to the Lord (Lev. 12:3, Ex. 29:37, Ezra 6:16-22, Ezek. 43:26-27, 2 Chr. 29:16-17).  Hanukkah was also patterned after the Feast of Tabernacles (2 Chr. 5:3).

Modern Observance

The main ceremony of Hanukkah is the lighting of the candles.  The Hanukkah menorah, called a Hanukkiyah, holds 8 candles - one for each night of Hanukkah.  So this year you would light the candles beginning sundown, Wednesday, November 27th to Wednesday, December 4th.  An additional holder for a ninth candle is called the shammash (means servant) candle.  It is used to light the other candles.

The Significance of Hanukkah for us as Christians

The main theme of Hanukkah is deliverance and rededication.  Just as the Jewish people were delivered from the Syrian opposition, Jesus came to deliver us from spiritual death and the snares of the devil.  Just as the Temple was cleansed and rededicated to God, Jesus wants to make us white as snow so that we will rededicate ourselves to honor God so that we can live a victorious life.

“The better decisions you make... The better outcomes you will see.”

NEWARK, N.J. AP – Cory Booker, who became a rising star in the Democratic Party as mayor of Newark, N.J., is the nation’s newest senator.

Booker, 44, was sworn in as a U.S. senator at noon Thursday. Vice President Joe Biden conducted the ceremony in the Old Senate Chamber. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) held the bible on which Booker took his oath.

The Democrat was surrounded by family, including his mother and brother. His father died Oct. 10.

Booker won a special election Oct. 16 to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Sen. Frank Lautenberg. He’ll serve the remaining 14 months of the term.

The former mayor becomes the second African-American in the Senate. The other is Republican Tim Scott of South Carolina.

“Let’s not forget; my state now has a Latino and a black representing it. I mean, that’s kind of incredible. So New Jersey is a special kind of place,” Sen. Booker said following his swearing in.

Menendez offered his new colleague some advice.

“When your passion calls you on something, use that eloquent voice of yours to try to promote those views,” New Jersey’s senior senator said.

Booker and his mother met with Majority Leader Harry Reid Thursday morning. In the afternoon, he’ll meet with President Barack Obama in the Oval Office.

Cory Booker stands with his mother and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid shortly before being

sworn in as U.S. Senator for New Jersey, Oct. 31, 2013.

Booker’s career has finally ascended to the national stage, but his profile has been there for years. He was dubbed a “rock star mayor” by his friend Oprah Winfrey, has 1.4

SENATOR BOOKER

million Twitter followers and is a fixture on late-night talk shows.

Booker tapped Wall Street to donate philanthropic funds to Newark and persuaded Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to give $100 million to its school system in 2010.

He runs in celebrity circles, raising money in Silicon Valley, New York City and Los Angeles, where actor Matt Damon co-hosted a campaign fundraiser for him in September.

Despite the high-profile connections and his status as the most recognizable Democrat in New Jersey, Booker will have to adjust to being the most junior of 100 senators. Yet he is starting off his tenure with high-profile meetings Thursday with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and with President Barack Obama.

Booker formally resigned as mayor of Newark on October 30th, Wednesday afternoon. It was effective at midnight Thursday.

“While I am leaving one position, I am not leaving Newark,” Booker said in his resignation letter. “I am proud to be able to now represent Newark and our entire state as a United States senator. My level of dedication, passion and service will not falter as I serve New Jersey.”

Newark City Council President Luis Quintana is expected to become interim mayor until a special election is held in May.

To ensure a smooth and orderly transition, Quintana called a council vote to officially appoint himself to the post, which was supposed to be a formality.

But half of the council failed to show up, 1010 WINS’ Steve Sandberg reported.

“I don’t know if they went fishing, hiking or they overslept but I hope that it’s not politics,” Quintana said. “It sends a bad message across.”

Quintana has rescheduled the vote.

Booker leaves Newark with a mixed legacy. The downtown has markedly improved, with high-rise corporate headquarters, new housing and restaurants popping up and a Whole Foods supermarket scheduled to open in 2016. Parks have been cleaned up throughout the city and violent crime is down in most cases.

Many residents, however, feel that areas outside downtown have been forgotten. Vacant lots and blighted homes dot neighborhoods. The city’s unemployment rate is 14.2 percent, half of its 277,000 residents live below the poverty level and the high school dropout rate is just under 40 percent.

After Lautenberg’s death, Gov. Chris Christie appointed former Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa to fill the position until the special election. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell bade Chiesa farewell on the Senate floor Wednesday afternoon.

Hosea 4:6

When we ask God for things I believe that it is important to remember a few things. One of those things is that we have to ask for those things that are consistent to God’s character and nature. We have to ask God for those things that are consistent with His will, with the understanding that His will can be found throughout the entire bible.

Another thing to remember is God knows what is best for each and every single one of His children; and when we pray for His will to be done it is with understanding that His will is the thing that will give all honor, praise and glory to God.

Remember God wants to forgive us of our sin. He wants to save our soul. He wants to be our friend during a trial. He wants to comfort us during death. He wants to spread the “good news” throughout the entire world. So when we ask God for, salvation, comfort and the spreading of the gospel we can be assured that these things are truly His will. Just a little something to think about.

Financial Transformation

1. Narrow your objectives.

By concentrating your efforts,

you have a better chance of

achieving what matters most.

2. Focus first on the goals that

matter.

To accomplish primary goals,

you will often need to put

desirable but less important

ones on the back burner.

3. Be prepared for conflicts.

Even worthy goals often conflict

with one another. Which goal

will cause the greater harm if it

is deferred?

4. Put time on your side.

The most important ally you

have in reaching your goals is

time. Money stashed in interest-

earning savings accounts or

invested in stocks and bonds

grows and compounds. The

more time you have, the more

chance you have of success.

5. Choose carefully.

In drawing up your list of goals,

you should look for things that

will help you feel financially

secure, happy or fulfilled.

6. Include family members.

If you have a spouse or

significant other, make sure that

person is part of the goal-setting

process. Children, too, should

have some say in goals that

affect them.

7. Start now.

The longer you wait to identify

and begin working toward your

goals, the more difficulty you'll

have reaching them. And the

longer you wait, the longer you

postpone the advantage of

compounding your money.

8. Sweat the big stuff.

Once you have prioritized your

list of goals, keep your spending

on course. Whenever you make

a large payment for anything,

ask yourself: "Is this taking me

nearer to my primary goals - or

leading me further away from

them?" If a big expense doesn't

get you closer to your goals, try

to defer or reduce it. If taking a

grand cruise steals money from

your kids' college fund, maybe

you should settle for a weekend

getaway.

9. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Although this lesson

encourages you to focus on big-

ticket, long-range plans, most of

life is lived in the here-and-now

and most of what you spend will

continue to be for daily

expenses - including many that

are simply for fun. That's OK -

so long as your long-range

needs are taken into

consideration.

10. Be prepared for change.

Your needs and desires will

change as you age, so you

should probably reexamine your

priorities at least every five

years.

Business Transformation

1. Customers first.

Celebrate your customers and align any growth plan around protecting your existing relationships. Sustainable business growth depends on keeping your customers happy, just as it did when you started your business. Consider creating customer reward programs (discounts, extended payment terms, etc.) to ensure customer loyalty.

2. What makes your business unique?

Being able to express your business’s core principles and values will help you choose appropriate growth strategies. If you haven’t done so already, create a polished 20 second “elevator speech” that summarizes your business’s products and uniqueness. This summary will help you focus branding and marketing efforts, and will provide the core for conversations with those you reach out to.

3. Sell solutions, not widgets.

Ramping up sales is easier when you focus on this reality: you’reselling a result, not a thing. Avoid “feature dumps” that emphasize the characteristics of your product rather than how it benefits your customer. The most effective sales conversation begins with questions to determine if your prospective buyer has a need for what you’re

selling. The goal is to match your products and services to what your prospect needs. Ifyou can’t make a match, move on.

4. Growth? Look out!

A challenge for many small business owners is shifting their perspective from inside their business—the daily details of running the business,to outside the business—developing a strategy for growth, researching markets, understanding competition and so on. Need help? Reach out for resources. Look for ways to harness the expertise and experience of others through networking. As time permits, join associations and attend meetings. It takes time, but can yield benefits without requiring capital.

5. Marketing.

Complementing your sales efforts with marketing is key to growth. It helps you get your message out to more prospects, creating demand for your products or services. It’s important to develop your branding and incorporate it in all your marketing. If you haven’t done so already, determine a look and feel (type style, graphics, color scheme, logo) and stick with it.

Always include a “call to action” telling prospects what you’d like them to do. Your marketing pieces should also include a compact version of your “elevator speech” for consistency and branding.

6. Working the numbers.

When your new business level requires expanded facilities, new equipment and increased staff, how will you pay for it all? If you’re “growing slow”, can you “self finance” these requirements through profits? If not, when you’re considering loans or mortgages, check out the Small Business Administration website in the US, or the Canada Business Network website for information on loans and grants. While you’re there, surf around. There’s a wealth of free information on a broad range of topics like writing a business plan, business law and regulations and finding local resources.

7. How many people does it take to create success?

As your business grows, the workload becomes more distributed, requiring more employees. Controlled growth means adding these employees slowly and deliberately. If you’re not sure you’ll have sustained revenue to support direct hire employees, consider temporary contract employees. It’s a great way to harness a skill you may only need temporarily. And “test driving” an employee is a great way to find if you have a good fit for longer term employment.

8. You’re the engine.

Everyone in your business impacts sustainability and growth. Make sure all employees understand and can implement everyday operating procedures. Keep to your organizing principles, focus on your customers and engage help when you need it. Good luck!

8 BUSINESS TIPS FROM XEROX

Ministry Transformation

We not only need to say no when being asked to engage in some task but also being able to say no to our selves. Ministry never ends. These will always be more to do and more that could have been done on the task that has been “check off” our to do lists. No matter how much you have done in a given day or week or month:

• You can always spend more time visiting the sick.

• You can always spend more time talking with people who hurting.

• You can always spend more time engaging your community.

• You can always spend more time studying and praying.

• You can always be in charge of another project or program.

• You can always spend more time working on your preaching skills.

There will always be more to do and there will always be tasks that have to be left unfinished And while ministry isn’t finite, we are.At some point we must stop, say no, rest, reinvigorate, refresh, and restore.

We come to the point where we have to say, to ourselves or to others, "No, I can't do that."

As we go forth in ministry, we work because we know that what we do is

important. We care about people and those who are hurting; and we are passionate about the word of God.

This is what makes it so hard to say no. And for may of us in ministry (myself included) our own self care is the first thing that we sacrifice for the care of others. We must rest, take care of our own (biological) families, and our very own soul itself.

When that occurs our work is the next thing to suffer. Being prepared for the work of the ministry takes work. Attending events, reading, studying, sermon preparation and event have the rest necessary to deliver the message which God has place on our hearts is, in itself a challenge.

Remember even Jesus said no; Mark chapter 6...

31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

Its OK to say NO! Its OK to rest. In fact when you say no to one thing...

You are in fact saying YES to something else. Say YES to taking care of yourself by saying NO to some of your tasks.

The hardest part of being a pastor is saying no.

Below is an excerpt from the Bridgeway Bible Commentary by Don Fleming on the subject of love as it was taught by the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 13:1-13

Love Is Greater Than The Gifts

The Corinthians were impressed with people who exercised the more spectacular gifts. Paul reminds them that no matter what gifts they have – tongues, prophecy, wisdom, knowledge, faith – if they lack love they are not merely unimportant, they are nothing. People may be so generous with their goods and money that in the end they themselves become poor. They may be so faithful to their duty that they sacrifice their lives. But without love they have gained nothing.

Paul then describes some of the qualities of love. Chief of these is that it thinks of others, not of self. Love is patient, kind, humble, forgiving, self-controlled and always

thoughtful of the feelings of others. It is not boastful, bad mannered, resentful or irritable. At the same time it upholds God’s standards of righteousness, always rejoicing in what is true and never in what is wrong. It is trusting and persevering, and always looks positively to the ultimate fulfillment of God’s purposes.

The various gifts are temporary and imperfect, for they are limited to life in the present world. But love is permanent, and endures into the age to come. The gifts Christians exercise are likened to the changing abilities and capacities in the life of a growing child, but love is likened to the maturity of adulthood. In the present world Christians have only a limited understanding of eternal things. Their view of the age to come is unclear. When face to face with Christ they will know these things clearly, just as God knows them clearly. The important issue for Christians is not the display of their spiritual gifts, but the exercise of faith, hope, and above all, love.
