Watch for your ballot to elect members to the Chamber Board of Dicectors

It’s Sunday afternoon, and you are all geared up to watch the NFL game of the week. Both teams are evenly matched, and it promises to be a great game. Midway through the second quarter, one of the teams fumbles the ball, and the other team picks it up and runs the ball in for a score. For the rest of the second quarter, the team that fumbled the ball cannot do anything right. They make several more mistakes and go into halftime behind by three touchdowns. Over the halftime break, they are able to make adjustments and play well for the remainder of the game. However, they cannot make up the three touchdowns that they gave up in the second quarter. They could not remedy losing focus in the second quarter. Our day to day lives at work are not all that much different than what goes on in the field of play during a NFL football game. Sure, we do not run, pass a ball, or tackle coworkers or customers, but we need to maintain our focus if we want to do well at work. In a football game, a big hit or a successful play by the opposing team may cause the op-position to lose focus. In our lives, it may be something that happens at work, such as a downturn in business, which causes you to lose focus or direction. It could also be something that happens outside of work, such as a family illness or a change in routine that makes it hard for you to function at work. Each of us are different, and different things can be a distraction for us. I always seem to have trouble focusing on work in the fall of the year. October is always an especially tough month for me. The last few years I have taken a break from running and biking in the fall. I have wanted to give myself a physical break from the workout routine. In the summer months, I usually ride a bike or run in the morning or evening. While I exercise in the morning, I always take that time to prepare for the day, or if in the evening, I go over how the day went. It is starting to feel like I am giv-ing myself a physical break from working out, but it is costing me mentally because I am not taking that time to relax and calmly reflect on what I have going on in my life. This year I have really had trouble keeping things in order. I feel terrible about a meeting that I missed at the Cham-ber of Commerce. It is very out of character for me to be late for a meeting. I had the meeting on my calendar, and with the help of Kathy, the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, everything was all set that we were going to cover. I had invested time preparing for the meeting. In fact, I was prepared for it several days ahead of time. The morning of the meeting, I went into work early and let myself get caught up in some issues that needed to be addressed at the dealership regarding our remodel. Before I realized it, I was over an hour late for the meeting. I had lost focus on what I needed to accomplish for the day. If I had kept the same routine of riding a bike or running that I had in the summer, would I have remembered the meeting? Who knows--maybe, maybe not. The football team that I mentioned earlier has a coaching staff to help the team maintain their focus on the field of play. Maybe I need that time to myself exercising to focus on what I need to get done. Every one of us could use something to help us to maintain our focus. It could be having a cup of coffee in your breakfast nook in the morning. Or, maybe it is your drive into work in the morning when you listen to the radio and get ready for the day. Whatever it is for you, the key is to allow that activity to help you through the day so that you can be ready for whatever challenges your work day will bring.Bill Young, Anderson & Koch Ford and North Branch Area Chamber President

Letter from the President

Directors CornerCount your (Retail) Blessings! As we move into November and begin to think about what this month means to us, a few things come to mind immediately: Thanksgiving and Shopping (OK and maybe Football!) Living in North Branch and the surrounding area it seems natural to see the Outlet Center just around the corner, across the street or a quick turn off the freeway. We may forget, or take for granted, the wealth of business and shopping opportunities we have at our fingertips. Not every community is so lucky!

This is the perfect time of year to take a moment to appreciate how all the businesses in our Chamber area complement and enhance our lives.

To say “Thank You” to the retailers that have stuck with us, though the hard times and the good. To the new businesses that have put their faith (and sometimes their life savings) into believing in the future of our com-munity. To Shop Local, to shake the hand of your neighbor as you stroll down the aisle of a local retailer. To enjoy a quiet cup of coffee and a homemade muffin, as we watch the leaves fall and the temperature drop at our favorite table of the local coffee shop or restaurant. To have our Bankers, Carry-outs and the Pizza Delivery Guy know us by first name.

Count your Blessings and remember the power of saying THANK YOU!

Hello North Branch Community,I have been working in North Branch for two years now and I am thrilled to have moved my coun-seling practice here! I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. I am a therapist trained to help teens, families and individuals with issues of Anxiety, Depression, PTSD, Eating Disorders, ADHD/ADD, Un-planned Pregnancies, Attachment issues, Grief and Loss, Trauma, Domestic Abuse, and Divorce and Blended Families. I specialize in trauma and abuse. My passion is reconnecting relationships and families when life stressors and conflicts become overwhelming and we lose sight of effective, healthy options. I base my practice on the belief that we all strive for balance in life; however, we may not possess all the healthy tools necessary to manage life’s stressors and resolve challenges to achieve that healthy balance. My therapeutic approach combines a Relational Life perspective to cultivate strengths and define boundaries while increasing positive connections to meet your needs. Many people put off calling a counselor until life is overwhelming. Please feel free to call for a con-sultation, even with typical life concerns if you are in need of additional support, reconnections and seeking growth. I accept most insurance companies and offer a self-pay/sliding fee rate as well.Take Care,Teri Schilling, LICSW
