THE ORIGIN OF THANKSGIVING: KNOW YOUR HISTORY

On October 3, 1863, President Lincoln made the tradition-al Thanksgiving celebration a nationwide holiday to be

commemorated each year on the fourth Thursday of November. In the midst of a bloody Civil War, President Lincoln issued a Presidential Proclamation in which he enumerated the blessings of

the American people and called upon his countrymen to “set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise”

(History.com, 2013).

Here are ten ways to give back this Thanksgiving:

1.) Donate to a nonprofit that helps the hungry. 2.) Donate a Thanksgiving basket to families in need. 3.) Hold a food drive in support of your local food bank. 4.) Volunteer at a soup kitchen. 5.) Send a phone card or care package to a soldier. 6.) Hold a Thanksgiving charity bake sale. 7.) Donate to a charity that helps the homeless. 8.) Deliver Thanksgiving dinners to housebound people. 9.) Visit hospital patients. 10.)Take part in a charity Turkey Trot or 5K run in your community.

Beginning in the mid-20th cen-tury and perhaps even earlier, the president of the United States has “pardoned” one or two Thanksgiving turkeys each year, sparing the birds from slaughter and sending them to a farm for retirement (History.com).

The Code Administration Department is responsible for the current and future planning and zoning activities within the City of Enid and all urbanized areas of Garfield County. The Code Department coordinates the administration and enforcement of all building codes, issuance of permits for building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits, and the inspection of code compliance throughout the building process. Additionally, the Code Department is re-sponsible for the licensing of all mechanical, electrical and plumbing con-tractors, inspection of all new construction, remodeling and all other work for which a permit is required. They are also responsible for enforcement of all nuisance ordinances for the City of Enid. This is an extremely talented group of individuals and we say “thank you” for ensuring our community operates at an optimum capacity.

Ingredients: 2 eggs 1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin 3/4 cupSplenda granular 1/2 teaspoonsalt 1 teaspooncinnamon 1/2 teaspoonginger 1/4 teaspoonclove 1 (12 ounce) can evaporated milk 1 -9 inch unbaked pie shell Directions:1. THINGS TO DO IN ENID

Residents of Enid and northwest Oklahoma will soon have a Professional Bull Riders (PBR) event right in their backyard, as Glob-al Spectrum, managers of the Enid Event Center and Gungoll Jackson present the 2013 Enid PBR Challenge. This two-night show is Nov. 15-16 at the new Enid Event Center, 302 S Grand in the heart of downtown Enid.

Enjoy glow bowling Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights on their 40 lanes, all equipped with automated bumpers. The bowling alley also has a concession stand and an arcade. Oakwood Bowl is a family and kid friendly place for fun to be had by all. It’s located at 4709 W. Garriott. 580-233-7469.

This evening is a kick off to the Christmas season. It will consist of live entertainment from bands and performers, carriage rides, a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, hot drinks and treats from vendors and will con-clude with a spectacular fireworks display.
