    We made it!!!!

    What an exciting year !!

Thanks to each and every single

person who helped us on this

    exhausting journey to reach our

    goal.

The PSHR is now a member of

    the International Shagya-

    Arabian Society (ISG).

We are in the midst of making

history. Imagine! It is now ourresponsibility to love, promote,

sponsor and last, but not least,

    to ride our Shagya-Arabians.

What a good start into the

    future.

Now we are faced with new

    opportunities and challenges as

we move into the future. We

know we will have some troubles

    to change our North American

    thinking to the European rules.

We know we will need your

    continued positive motivation,

    your help practically and

    financially - your questions which

will make all of us wiser as we

    work together to ensure the

    future of the Shagya-Arabian.

    Shagya- Arabians.

Be a part of the history of the

    Shagya-Arabianin the US and Canada.

    Even though Halloween and

    Christmas are already in our

mind, this year is not over yet.

We have a great deal to organize

    and formalize before spring when

    we all enjoy our wonderful

    Shagya-Arabian in the spring out

on the trail or in a show ring.

Come with us as we make big

plans for the future. Please join

with us and lend a hand as we

    plan inspections for the

    upcoming year. There are many

    opportunities and committees to

    choose from, your participation

does not have to be a full time

    commitment. Every little bit

    helps! Help us keep our

    momentum going.

    Contact your PShR Board of

    Directors today with your ideas

and find out how you can help.

    The First PShR

    Inspection Tour!

The PShR will be aligning ourinspections, performancetesting and studbooks with theISG RZBO (BreedingGuidelines). Not only do weembrace performance testing,

our PShR performance criteriashowcase our athletic Shagya-Arabians by going beyond theminimum requirements in theGeneral ISG Framework. Webelieve our horses are thecream of the crop and we arewilling to prove it.

In addition to testing ourstallions, the PShR hasperformance criteria for our

beautiful Shagya-Arabianmares. Why? According tosome breeding experts, themare contributes a greatergenetic influence on a foal thanthe stallion.so the answeris, why not?

Geldings are the proof of anyathletic breed they are theambassadors who go out andcompete and prove the Shagya-

Arabian is a versatile horseperfect for everyone. Therefore, to honor anddocument our geldings thePShR has developedconformation evaluation andperformance criteria to makesure they get the recognitionthey deserve. The PShR hasdeveloped Book Categories forGelding to acknowledge theirhard work, these categories are

    not recognized by the ISG.

Throughout history, authorshave referred to the Shagya-Arabian as an improver forother breeds; contributing

suspension, athletic stamina, working attitudes and elegance. To acknowledge these crossesexhibiting the Shagya-Arabianqualities, the PShR has alsodeveloped conformationevaluation and performancecriteria to document andacknowledge the influence ofthe Shagya-Arabian. The PShR

has developed Books III & IVfor Shagya-Arabian crosses thatare at least 25% Shagya-Arabian. Books III & IV arenot recognized by the ISG.

Summary charts are included inthis newsletter to explain theopportunities available to abroad spectrum of participationfor all our PShR horses andmembers.

If you do not have a horse tobring come and watch!

    The PShR will be

    showcasing as many horses

    as possible at each

    inspection site.

It will be a great opportunity tosee the various Shagya familiesand meet fellow Shagya-

    Arabian admirers.

    Where will the PShR

    inspections be held?

A huge thank you goes out toour first PShR host sites! Ourinitial kick off site will be at thehome of one of our PShRfoundation members, Katherine

I was asked to exa-mine it again.Inspring 2011 Ivegotten theresponsi-bility to read the stutbooks of both USAassociations(PSHR andASAV) whichapp liedformembership in the ISG.Ba-sed on my report, the associationswereasked to rewrite their stutbooksuntilthe end of the year.In November I received ingoodtimelymanner the rewrittenStutbookfrom

My comment to AIs there a comparison betweenthePSHR ZBO and the ISG

    RZBO?

The ZBO of an association is the funda-ment of an association. Base for a tho-

rough stutbook.I examinated the ZBO withtheresultthat the ZBO compares totheRZBO of

horse is born only once, it gets onlyonepedigree, itis not allowed to producenew ped igree papers. Inspections or ot-hers have to be signedin into the origi-nal pedigree.I had to learn the hard way, that thispointcant be fulfilled. The differencesbetween the three USA associationsareso big, the originalped igrees are not gi-ven away to make their lifedifficult.2. Inspections and performance testsare listedwithdate.3. with an enormous effort the new stut-book thank you very much. From the members in Charge ofthePSHR I received countlessquestions tothe ZBO and the stutbook. A.B. a ger-man Shagya breeder, living in Canadaand Member of the board of the PSHR,sent me always right away translationsand explanations, which made my wor-kload wayeasier.I owe her a specialthank you for this.

I had two possibilities:Either not to re-act to the questions, my responsibilitywas only to examine the result or tohelp to create such an important docu-ment. I chose the second possibility, knowingthat Iwill offend my friends atthe NASS.

ket. The finalrealisation has inpartsstillto be done.

My comments to BAre the progeny of the horsescorrectand are they in the rightsectionsofthe stutbook?

I have checked all ped igrees, eliminatedthe purebred arabians.11stallionsarein the stallion book and 30 maresarein

    Anticipation . . .

    By Holly Kemmis

    ISG Meeting July, 2012

I had no idea what to expect . . . Id traveled to Europe before, buthad never been to Hungary and Austria, so when the invitation toattend the ISG meeting in July came, I eagerly accepted.

I am a rookie at many things horse related but an avid student. My eyes were open wide when we landed in Budapest and set offto explore the city. Being in Hungary for the first time was specialto me, as my grandparents were born in the Budapest area, andcame to the United States in the 1920s, where they met andmarried. I fondly remember my Nana with her slight Europeanaccent and culinary talents. I wanted to share my passion for thelocal food with Linda and Olivia Rudolphi everything paprika, sour cream, noodles and cottage cheese that was so familiar to me.

Budapest is a gorgeous city! The river Danube runs through the center and a series of bridges, all withnames, make easy travel from the west (Buda) to the east (Pest). Our hotel was along the river, at thebase of Gellert Hill (ask me after a few cocktails how many times we hiked up the hill!) The city isfamous for its thermal baths, some of the largest in Europe, and we indulged in the Gellert spa which isdecorated in gorgeous Art Nouveau mosaics and stained glass.

Our first trip out of the city was to the farm of Andrea Janszik, who is the registrar for the Kisberi-Gidran Association in Hungary. The Gidran is a strong, medium heavy mount or carriage horse with abig frame, typically chestnut in color and regarded as a Hungarian Anglo-Arab. They are a very rarebreed, found only in Hungary and Romania in small numbers. Andreas farm has a traditional thatch-roof barn and pastoral setting. At the end of the day, Andreas husband cooked a traditional meal for

us (a goulash-like soup). Our next adventure was to the Gidran farm inKereki, where we were treated to a presentation oftwo lovely stallions and a carriage ride throughthe countryside. The manager did not speak English so Andreagraciously agreed to travel with us as translator. The Hungarian language is not easy for Englishspeaking folks like me to understand their wordsare filled with more consonants than vowels, especially the letters G, V and Z.

We were lucky to fit our tour into their schedule asthey were departing shortly for a carriage drivingcompetition. The carriage that took us cross country and through thequaint village of Kereki is shown here.

I have never seen so many chestnut horses in oneplace! As you can see, the youngsters were quite

friendly and inquisitive with Dr. Olivia.

Next was the day Id waited for . . . to Babolna (pronounced withthe accent on the first syllable), the Shagya State Stud of Hungary. Here we were joined by our international ISG friends, Dr. WalterHuber and Gertrud Von Fedak.

The stud farm was established in1789 as the Royal Imperial Studof the Austro-Hungarian Empireto supply horses for the army

and the Royal Guard. It comesas no surprise that there is anoverpowering sense of historyhere. The buildings andgrounds are gorgeous, everything is freshly paintedbright yellow with dark green

trim and the gardens are neatly manicured. Upon arrival, we settledinto the former officer quarters, now a small hotel. As we were all

impatient to see more, Dr. Huber treated us to aprivate tour of the stallion and mare barns, sharing

stories of the time he worked and rode the BabolnaShagya-Arabians in his youth.

Above each stall hung the horses pedigree, and thegroup talked at length about each of thecharacteristics found in the main breeding lines. Iwas an avid listener, and found myself taking picturesof the stall sign that corresponded to each horse. Iwanted to remember every detail!

I noticed a difference when speaking with Europeans

about Shagya-Arabians and Arabians. In the US, wecall Arabians just that when talking with Shagya-Arabian breeders in Europe, Arabians are referred toas Purebreds.

Our second day at Babolna included a discussion of the companys many interests (more than justhorse breeding), a presentation of stallions, a carriage ride through a beautiful park, and a trip to one ofthe outlying farms. We had a congenial tour guide, who also served as translator. The day would nothave been complete without a tour of the museum, which held many fine examples of traditional

harness and saddlery, musical instruments, andlarge displays that traced the main Babolna Shagyalines back to the beginning. The visit to the off-site farm where some of the younger stallions werein training was a highlight for me.It was there that I found the stallion I thought mostperfect, the one I would dream to bring home,Gazal XIX-1. Check him out, hes GORGEOUS!Ah, if wishes were horses . . . . (BTW, I checkedthe private sale list, hes NOT on it.)

We topped off our perfect day with food and drink at the home of Tamas Rombauer. Here I had myfirst taste of home-brewed Palinka, a strong fruit brandy. Im such an innocent! Tamas offered me asmall glass, everyone raised their arms in a toast, and I chugged. Most of the rest of the eveningremains fuzzy, but the food and company were outstanding.

Next stop on our whirlwind tour was the Pelsonius Farm in the Lake Balaton area of Hungary. Whatbeautiful countryside! The farm was enormous(600 ha or 1400+ acres) and there are over 300horses it is the largest Arab stud in Hungary.

We traveled by jeep out to see the mares andyounger horses. Afterwards, the stallions werepresented to us and we spent time with the latestcrop of foals. This is a private farm, not stateowned, and the owner/director had an interestingbreeding program. He was crossing ShagyaArabian and Akhal-Teke stallions with ShagyaArabian and Arabian (purebred) mares.Targeting the distance market in Europe, hehopes to produce a high quality horse with bothspeed and endurance.

This picture is of one of the Pelsonius stallions, a 4 year old Shagya by Koheilan XIII. He was JuniorChampion stallion in the European Championships in Stadl, Austria 2010. I was very impressed bythe quality and diversity of the stallions at Pelsonius.

From Babolna, we traveled to the final chapter inour story, the ISG meeting in Vienna. WOW! Alarge group of passionate Shagya-Arabian supportersgathered for a day filled with activities thatculminated with the annual meeting. Of course, wewere on pins and needles, waiting for the meeting,

because THE VOTE was hanging in the balance:Would the ISG accept the PShR? Time will tell . . .

We started our day with a carriage ride through thecity, the drivers describing the sites, our camerasclicking. After this, we were treated to aperformance by the Lipizzaner horses and tour of theSpanish Riding School. It had always been a dream of mine

to see the school I wasonly a wee bitdisappointed that the

famed stallions were onholiday at Piber and wehad to settle for themares and youngsters. Ipromised myself areturn trip.

We then traveled by bus to the Freudenau race track, a nostalgic location whose buildings date back tothe time of the Austrian emperors, a place where the aristocracy presented their horses . The meeting

was chaired by the ISG President, Ahmed AlSamarraie, entirely in German. Those of us whoneeded English were given headsets so we couldhear the translator.

The agenda seemed long I skimmed through it,eager to understand how long we would have to waitfor THE VOTE. Shelley, Olivia, Linda, and I wereall seated at the end of one row - - Behind me were

some charming people who spoke German, and tomy right was a couple from one of the Scandinavian

countries. Everyone was friendly and relaxed(except Linda, who by this point was barelybreathing). I was impressed with the business-like manor in which the meeting was conducted. Finally, Ahmed announced the recommendationof the Board of Directors that the PerformanceShagya-Arabian

Registry be accepted as a member of the ISG and

called for the vote. Then, came the vote by rollcall - - one by one, each country was named andits delegates called out their vote YES, YES,YES . . . it continued. At the end it wasapparent to everyone that the PShR was

accepted. The group behind me tapped me on theshoulder and offered me a glass of wine, huge smileson their faces - - I jumped up, cheering as we startedhugging each other. I looked around the room andeveryone was smiling, clapping, and welcoming us. Ido believe we all shed a few tears of joy . . .

The PShR achieved the goal we have been working so long and hard for. What lies ahead? A wholenew set of challenges was given to us by Ahmed following the meeting, the most important being tooffer registration to the Shagya-Arabian horses in the United States who do not belong to an officialISG organization. I know we will find a way!Toast! Prost! Salut! Skaal! Nazdrave! Kedves Egeszsegere! Toastado! A Votre Sante! Cheers!
