of the events hosted during October were heavily affected by the wind and rain. The weather at last

is starting to change and the participating numbers are starting to increase.

The highlight on the October calendar was most certainly the OUTsurance Gun Run, hosted by

WPA is looking forward to November’s two big events, namely, Landmarks Half Marathon, followed

encourage temporary licenced runners to participate in more events with the ultimate goal of

The new Track and Field season is in full swing, an urgent appeal goes out to all WPA clubs to please

WPA is lagging behind with quality performances across the board specifically in all the senior levels

of participation in Cross Country and Road Running. The lack of a proper coaching structure from

performances. The quality of the athletes within WPA can change as soon as we get these athletes

Our Kids Development program is progressing very well and the search for talented individuals will be

proper coaching schedules to complete the program.

The Race walking Commission once again hosted a very successful SA Race Walking Championships

Cape Town was once again the host city for the 50km SA Race Walking Championships which was

held at Youngsfield Military Base, in ideal conditions, on the 13th October 2012 and Western Province

proudly came in 1st place against the other 8 provinces, beating Central Gauteng by only 8 points.

The event attracted close to 200 of SA’s top race walking athletes and even drew an International

competitor from Singapore. The perfect conditions contributed to a number of personal bests and

SA Masters records being broken in the various supporting race distances and age categories.

A total of only 16 athletes took on the gruelling 50km challenge which was won by Sipho Mahlango

(AGN) in a time of 4:44:52, with our WPA champ, Ross McDonald filling 2nd spot in 4:57:51.

Yvonne Irmscher (KZNA) won the women’s 50km race in 5:35:51 with our local hero, Vanessa Theron

coming in 4th place in 6:17:55.

& Mongameli Christopher Kama Salida accepting the winning

trophy.

TRACK & FIELD

What an exciting track and field season lies ahead; and this season sees the introduction of little

athletics for our primary schools counterparts. The good news that the imminent closure of Bellville

Stadium will be delayed until April next year and the opening of the newly completed Green Point

Stadium, we can only look forward to a fantastic and record breaking season, which started at

Vygieskraal Stadium in Athlone during the last week of September this year.

The WPA Combined events calendar kicked-off with no less than 47 combined athletes – a

phenomenal growth from a mere 18 athletes – last year. This is thanks to the high schools who have

answered the call to participate in this exciting WPA track and field programme which forms part of

every National Championship and with the news the ASA will host their first ever Combined Events

Championship next year, and those budding young stars in the province are gearing themselves for

these championships next year.

Sherwin Parrish (SPAAC) has already improved his WPA Sub-Youth (U.16) Octathlon record from 3991

points to 4610 points while Carla Johnson from the same club is creeping ever so closely to her

National record of 4338 (G U.16) with a performance of 4252 points in the heptathlon. The last of

these championships for this year will be held at the Bellville Stadium on 7 & 8 December 2012. It is

wonderful to see that UCT has joined SPAAC and WCSS in the combined events and would welcome

Page 3: November 2012 Newslettereolstoragewe.blob.core.windows.net/wm-122490-cmsimages...November 2012 Newsletter EditoEditorialrriiaallrial At last we can welcome summer after a very long

all other clubs to also join them in these events. On the track, it was the welcomed return to some of

our top senior athletes, viz Angus Julies (110m Hurdles), Ramsay Carelse (High Jump), Tiaan Smith

(11om Hurdles), Mareike Wolhuter (400m and 200m), Antonio Alkana (100 / 200m and a few well

known others. We hope to see all our other top senior athletes coming out this season in full force.

Our youth are all gearing themselves for the bumper season with the African Youth Championships in

Nigeria at the end of March 2013 and the World Youth Track and Field Championships in Donetsk,

Ukraine from Wednesday 10 July 2013 to Sunday 14 July 2013. Youth athletes from WPA to keep your

eyes on will be the WCSS speedster Tamsyn Thomas, Carla Johnson, the current national long jump

record holder, Keagan Peters, the National Youth Octathlon silver medalist and a few other talented

Youth, the province can be proud of.

Out little athletics programme started at Vygieskraal Stadium with a few schools and clubs

participating, but we are looking forward to greater participation from all clubs at the second little

athletics league at Mandela Park Stadium, Khayelitsha on Saturday 10 November 2012 starting at

08h30.

We have come to the end of our club’s 2011/2012 running year & look back on a very successful

year for Edgemead Runners. The club membership is up on the previous year our beginners group

remains very active, still growing on a weekly basis and the general performance of our members at

races was excellent!

The 2012/2013 Club Committee elected at our AGM in October 2012 are the following: Francois

Gouws (Chairperson), Arnold Nardy (Men’s Club Captain), Kim Boshoff (Ladies Club Captain),

Christo Bothma (Financial Officer), Erwin Rencken (Secretary), Brian Merryweather (Registration

Officer) & Karen Bell (Social Convener). 2 Club Members, Glynis Bowie & Rob Korb, have also been

awarded life membership of the club. Congratulations to all & good luck with the tasks ahead!

With summer approaching it is always good to see the number of members at races, especially

those that took a break during winter. Members are constantly improving their personal best times &

it is evident that club member support has encouraged members to perform at their best. Well done

to all of you, keep up the great running. Our weekly time trials & club runs are well attended & we

plan interesting changes to the format of these runs in the coming year. Thanks to Gavin, Faffa,

Pierre, Mike & Jennifer for your commitment & guidance with the training groups as well as those

members assisting with club runs & time trial duties!

The club hosted their second successful social function this year on Friday 21 September 2012. The

previous function was held in May and was attended by a record 108 people. The second social

exceeded all expectations when more than 112 people attended.

The social function was held in a "bring and braai" format. Live music was provided by existing

members of the club and proved to be a huge success - people were dancing until midnight & it

was evident that all were having a ball of a time. The function was talked about for weeks

afterwards and all are looking forward to the next event. The club managed to raise funds with the

function, but most important of all, the function allowed members to make new social connections

and new friendships were formed.

We are looking forward to another successful 2012/2013 running year and wish every club and all

their members’ good luck for the year ahead. We hope that all the administrators of all sporting

codes (road, track and field, cross country and walking) will work together and unite to build and

strengthen WPA.

RUN/WALK FOR LIFE WP Athletic Club

Vital Run Half Marathon, 10km and 4km Fun Run

SUNDAY, 1 DECEMBER – LOURENSFORD WINE ESTATE, SOMERSET WEST, WESTERN PROVINCE

The Vital Run, organised by the Run/Walk for life WP Athletic Club, now known as one of the most

beautiful off-road ‘traffic free’ Races through the Scenic Lourensford Wine Estate, in Somerset West.

The 2012 event forms part of the Western Province Powerade League events.

CHARITY

Since 2011 the Vitalrun has launched the Red Socks initiative in order to raise funds for charity.

Participants can purchase a pair of good quality red running socks to show their support towards the

worthy cause. Proceeds of this race will be donated to PATCH Child Abuse Centre.

PATCH, the Helderberg Child Abuse Centre in the Western Cape, South Africa, aims to support all

child victims of sexual abuse in the Helderberg and strives to prevent the incidence of this horrific

crime committed against innocent children. Every child victim of sexual abuse is entitled to

Page 6: November 2012 Newslettereolstoragewe.blob.core.windows.net/wm-122490-cmsimages...November 2012 Newsletter EditoEditorialrriiaallrial At last we can welcome summer after a very long

immediate crisis intervention, free professional therapy in his/her home language at a facility close to

the child victim’s home, and preparation for their court case.

Due to the generous contributions and purchases of Red Socks, by Runners, the 2011 Race

managed to raise R60 000 for Patch and it will be great to equal or pass this target in 2012.

TRAFFIC & PARKING

Please note that there is only one public access road into Lourensford Wine Estate. The 2011 Race

reported a huge improvement in traffic flow with minimal build-up compared to 2010.

It is however our intention to improve the traffic flow to the point that free flow in and out of the farm

can be achieved to the satisfaction of all participants.

The following arrangements have been made for 2012:

• Start times between the 21km and 10km Races have now been extended to 1 hour in order

to release the pressure and enable easier flow of traffic through Lourensford Road. The fun

run will now only start at 8:00.

• People travelling from Stellenbosch side can access Lourensford Road along Irene Road.

• Traffic officials will be deployed on the main intersections in Somerset West and Lourensford

Road and will be monitoring alternatives should any bottlenecks develop.

• Marshalls will be directing traffic to 3 various parking areas once entered into the Wine Estate.

• Additional Security/Parking marshals have been contracted for extended hours in order to

regulate outgoing traffic.

• Participants are urged to arrive early allowing at least 90 minutes travelling time from Cape

Town.

Due to the popularity of the Vital Run/Walk for Life Event, it annually attracts an estimate 2500

vehicles. We would like to encourage all of the participants in this event, to make a concerted effort

to club together and/or lift clubs. This will drastically reduce the amount of vehicles, lowering the

carbon emissions and assisting Lourensford in achieving our continuous dedication to protection and

preservation of the estate.

ENTRIES

Pre-entries close Tuesday 20 November. Registration takes place at selected Sportsman’s’

Warehouses the day before the race. Entries will be taken on race day at Lourensford Wine Estate.

Run it walk it … but most of all come and experience it!

VODACOM STRIDERS

A bit of history:

We used to participate as a business in the Medihelp Business relay challenge every year around

September. We had a good turnout for two years (2000 – 2001) and then decided to start a running

club.

The Vodacom Striders club started 10 years ago on 12 June 2002 under the name Yebo Striders. The

first year we had 20 members, the next year 30 and from there on we averaged between 60 to 80

members per year. Our Membership is restricted to employees of Vodacom and direct family

members. We later extended membership to Vodacom contract workers and friends.

We do not have a specific area or clubhouse. We work out of three buildings and live all over the

peninsula.

We elected a new committee and would like to introduce the committee members.

It is quite inspiring to read about how and why everyone started running! We are looking forward to

a great future for the club.

Chairman: Louis Botha

Running gives one the opportunity to do a bit of thinking (reflective thinking), it gives you some social interaction

and it’s one of the easiest and cheapest ways to stay healthy.

I have been running since 2004 and this has largely been the influence of my dad (who has completed 15 Two

Oceans and 10 Comrades).

My passion is being out in nature, whether to hike up the mountain or just to cruise on my mountain bike. I also

like reading books on leadership and personal development and anything that I can learn from.

Vice chairman: Joey Witlouw

Cell: 0829904926, Email: [email protected]

I started running to compliment my weight loss programme and to improve my physical health. What started off as

a MUST has become a lifestyle and rubbed off on my kids. Race days have become family outings with kids taking

part in 5km and 10km runs. I enjoy running with a partner and groups but LOVE running alone, especially that early

morning (06:00) runs over weekends– my thinking time on the road.

I started training in October 2010 and completed my first 10km race in February 2011(Nelson Mandela 27 for

Freedom Race).

My passions include travelling, socialising and spending time on the Golf Course (playing).

Why do I run? Because I can!

I also run because it keeps my weight in check, it perks me up and helps me cope better with stress. I hope I can

continue for a long time yet……

The picture is of my husband and I on my birthday in 2011.

Running keeps me fit, clears my mind, gives me a sense of freedom.

I started running at the age of 8 and achieved SA colours for track, road and cross country.

Married for 11 years, love spending time with my 4 year old Sara.

Passionate about assisting the less fortunate. Qualified lifeguard and love the ocean. I spend most summer days at

the beach. I enjoy taking long drives to the countryside, spending time in nature – having picnics, mountain biking

and hikes. I’m an adventure junkie; will be doing The Impi Challenge in October 2012. I represented WP and SA in

Running, Soccer, Swimming, Lifesaving and Gymnastics. I enjoy doing Muay Thai and it’s a desire to live at a

training camp for a month, sparing and learning form the world’s greatest MT fighters. Although I haven’t run of

late, it’s my desire to complete in the Comrades by 2015.

Club Captain: Deon du Plessis

Cell: 0829974456, Email: [email protected]

Ricardo Harry challenged me to run the Century City 10km and completing it boosted my ego and my endorphins

to such a point that I have just kept on running. Between running and swimming I have dropped over 20kg in

weight this year. My health vitals such as blood-pressure and random cholesterol have also improved.

Since my 1st

race in March 2012 I ran most of the 10km races, as well as the Two Oceans and Safari half marathons.

I’m looking forward to the Gun Run, Grape Run and the Cape Point half marathons. If these go well, I will consider

a marathon.

I have a passion for barefoot / minimalist running. I have completed 2 races wearing Vibram 5 Fingers and aim to

wear shoes only when absolutely necessary. My other passion is swimming. I would like to do some ocean

swimming in the future.

Statistician: Mynhardt Kitshoff

Running gives me a feeling of freedom and exhilaration. I can push myself to greater limits and enjoy it. In 2010

after running the Knysna half marathon with a leaking appendix , my body being poisoned resulting in peritonitis,

then double pneumonia and eventually my lungs collapsing in theatre , waking up with a ventilator breathing for

me, my doctor said that my fitness had saved my life. In ICU I made 3 promises to myself: Quit smoking, run the

Two Oceans Ultra and Comrades. I have done all 3. Running is part of living life to the fullest and I’ve wanted to do

the Comrades since I was 5 - I have made that dream a reality.

At school I did 400m, 800m and field runs (5 to 8km). At age 16 I had to learn to walk again after a motor cycle

accident and I did not run for over 20 years. In 2009 Mark Farrel got me to do a 5km run and I huffed and puffed. I

then decided to run my 1st

half marathon within 3 months. In 2010 I started doing races, 1st

half marathon and

marathon in 2010, 1st

ultra marathon, Two Oceans in 2011 and 1st

Comrades in 2012.

My passion is having a balanced life: Success in business, spending time with family, being a friend to my daughters

and wife. Running, surfing, relaxing on the farm, walking and appreciating nature. Reading about running, business,

self-improvement, influential people like Nelson Mandela, Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, etc.

I only run because of the Comrades.

For years I have been watching Comrades from start to finish, the whole day.

I was so tired when it was over, but then I promised myself….next year.

I started practicing in 1998 and did my first up run in 2000 and got bitten ever since.

Running is like a drug, I cannot go without it . . . .

I started running in March 2011.

Running helps me to keep fit, de-stress, re-energise, challenge myself and gives me an opportunity for self-

reflection.

Additional member: Eric Godongwana

I run because I have huge weight problem. Running boosts my immune system and also helps to reduce stress. I

like to surround myself with positive people and being a runner helps me to meet them. I like to organise, it was

great pleasure working as original committee member for the Cape Town Marathon when it started.

I started running in 2007 as a way of socializing. I enjoy being around athletes with their stories about the race. I

would like to see our club grow, bring back those who left us. Let’s have a drive to recruit more of our staff

members. I would also like to see us participating in a race as marshals or have a table.

Additional member: Adnaan van Heerden

Cell: 0829944116, Email: [email protected]

Running gives me a sense of freedom and time to clear my mind and reflect on my life. It challenges me physically

and mentally and gives me the opportunity to see places I would probably never have seen. I also enjoy the

atmosphere at races and meeting new people, listening to their stories. Last Sat. during a 24km run I met a runner

who is training for the NY marathon in Nov, which is so motivating for me!

I started running completely by accident as my gym partner, Angelo Graham, got involved in it. In 2010 I

accompanied him on my 1st

15km run, which I finished with ease. I then did the Peninsula half marathon without

an entry in less than 2hrs but wasn’t sure of my exact time because I could not cross the finish line! I was hooked

though. I have since completed numerous 10km, 15km, 30km, half & full marathons but my biggest achievements

have been 2 Two Oceans Ultra Marathons and 2 Comrades Marathons (Up & Down) earning me my back 2 back

Comrades medal J.

My passion is to lead a healthy, active lifestyle. I try my best to have healthy eating habits and gym at least 3 times

per week. I currently enjoy running, tennis, soccer (indoor & outdoor) & surfing.

In 2009 I started using a pedometer provided by Vodacom to its employees. I did a fun walk and then the Gun Run

10 km, simply to increase my daily steps. Encouraged by my time of less than 52 min I started doing regular races

on weekends.

It’s been an amazing journey since then, the beginning of a new, active life that has helped me manage my

cholesterol and glucose levels, improving my health and quality of life in general. I’ve completed several 10 and 15

km races, as well as half marathons, including my 1st

Two Oceans 21.1 km. The sport bug has bitten me to such an

extent that I have even started cycling and completed my 1st

Cape Argus this year. I also enjoy hiking and doing

trail runs.

I hope to be doing my 1st

international race on my 40th

birthday at the end of September, a 10 mile run from the

Eiffel Tower to the Versailles Palace in Paris, France. If I do manage to participate in this, I will proudly be wearing

my Vodacom Striders shirt!

We are only left with a month until the end of year and we must reiterate that 2012 has been a great

year for Kids Athletics. Majority of the kids have shown huge progress, some athletes will be exiting

the programme and joining the elite athletes in Cross Country, Road Running and Track and Field.

The training, guidance and discipline they have received over the last two years has trained and

prepared them to compete in additional WPA events. Western Province Athletics has appointed 3

Youth Development Coaches who are currnetly coaching juniors who have shown a lot of potential.

Many of the kids that are currently on the WP Kids Athletics programme will be selected and given

the opportunity to join the coaching pragramme, this is dependant on their perfomance and ability.

On the 13 October 2012 we hosted the first Kids Athletics mini competition at the Central Hockey

field in Athlone, the second event was on 20 October in Gugulethu and the third on 27 October at

the False Bay Rugby field in Constantia. All three events have been very successful and kids have

really worked hard at making sure that their team is first on the log.

SABC were present to film the event that took place on 20 October 2012 in Gugulethu, the children

were very excited to be interviewed and felt very much like superstars.

The final event was hosted on 3 November at Vygieskraal Stadium in Athlone. This was the last

chance for the teams to work hard at improving their scores. The culminating event takes place on

10 November at the Green Point Urban Park, awards will be presented to the most deserving juniors,

clubs and facilitators.

Below are some of the catergories that will be awarded:

1. Most dedicated junior of the series

2. Most improved junior of the series

3. Juniors who have shown the most Leadership ability

4. Outstanding performance in a particular “activity”

We extend thanks to all the clubs and facilitators who have been committed week in and week out

to developing the talent and achieving success with their juniors. We look forward to welcoming

additional new dedicated clubs that will join this wonderful programme in 2013.

WPA would like to thank all our sponsors and partners for making this programme possible, special

mention must be made of the Two Oceans Marathon Association, we are truly grateful for your

continued support.
