A conversation with Stefan Karl By Kathy Janich

He’s not sucH a mean one, tHis mr. GrincHDon’t look now, but there’s a

classically trained actor inside that Grinch suit. Stefan Karl graduated from the Icelandic Academy of Arts in Reykjavík and is a National Theatre of Iceland alumni. He’s played Cyrano and Puck, the demented dentist in Little Shop of Horrors and dancing man Cosmo Brown in Singin’ in the Rain. This is the fourth season he’s slithering into the green fur that defines the Seussian scoundrel with garlic in his soul.

Karl, a stage, film and TV actor, may be best known as villain Robbie Rotten from the 2004-07 Nickelodeon series “LazyTown.”

The show, now a Turner Broadcasting property, will be

back in production this year, filming 26 new episodes. Come Christmas 2012,

however, Karl will be back to harass all of Who-ville.

“I just can’t stop it,” says Karl, a theater guy at heart, “It’s so much fun.”

Karl’s “Christmas season” began in late October when Grinch principals began rehearsing in New York. It will end Dec. 31 in San Francisco after the company has done about 85 shows in seven weeks. Thats up to 15 shows a week, sometimes three a day. Getting into the Grinchy gear takes Karl about two hours. His face is hand-painted before he dons costume and wigs, and is then wired for sound.

But that’s not why the Grinch hates Christmas.

“I don’t think he hates Christmas,” Karl says. “He’s just confused by what Christmas is all about until he meets Cindy-Lou Who.”

Dr. Seuss’ children’s book, which created the “Grinch” franchise in 1957, is as relevant today as it was then and in 1966, when the TV special that airs annually without fail first entertained fans, the tall and the small.

What Dr. Seuss is trying to tell us,” says Karl, is that Christmas is “not about the packages and boxes and bags. It’s about what’s inside and the meaning behind it that matters.”

The musical, officially titled Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical, had its genesis at the Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis in 1994. But this candy-colored version began in 1998 at San Diego’s Old Globe under the direction of then-Artistic Director Jack O’Brien, a multiple Tony Award winner for both plays and musicals. It features 10 songs:

the original “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome, Christmas” (by Albert Hague and Dr. Seuss, aka Theodor Geisel) and eight others written by Mel Marvin and Timothy Mason.

That staging, now in its 14th season at the Old Globe, led to limited Broadway runs in 2006 and 2007, and looks much more like the classic TV special than the book, which even the famously green Grinch is illustrated in red, black and white pencil drawings.

“Jack made it very clear to us that he wanted to see a show for children that had all the theater magic possible, because this might be their first theater experience and we didn’t want disappoint them,” Karl says.

Karl knows a little about what appeals to children. He’s the father of four (ages 3, 4, 10 and 16) and

began performing at age 12 himself, at a community theater in his native Iceland that encouraged the young actors to write their own shows.

“Pretty much from that time, it was no turning back for me,” he says. “I kept trying to find another profession, but it kept pulling me back and back. I just love theater. I think theater is a medium that is going to live forever.”

As the creature whose heart is as empty as a hole, one who has the gall to impersonate Santy Claus, Karl exudes a rubber-faced physicality and the graceful mincing steps of a true baddie. At 6-foot-3, he looms evilly over his fellow actors. All the Whos, he says, from Cindy-Lou to Grandpa, are picked by size, so the Grinch purposely looks bigger.

It’s all a part of the magic, of theater and the season, as even this time-tested meanie comes to realize.

“Maybe Christmas,” he thinks, “doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas … perhaps … means a little bit more.”

steFan KarL (The Grinch) is best known for his role as the villain Robbie Rotten in the TV series “LazyTown.” Currently shown on PBS Sprout and in more than 120 countries, “LazyTown” won the prestigious BAFTA award for the episode “Robbie’s Greatest Misses” in 2007. Stefan’s theatre work in the past includes: the National Theatre of iceland: Cyrano de Bergerac (Cyrano), Singin’ in the Rain (Cosmo Brown), Stones in His Pockets (Jake Quinn), LazyTown (Robbie Rotten), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Puck), Noises Off (Lloyd); Reykjavik City Theatre: Little Shop of Horrors (the Dentist) and many others. Stefan plays the lead in the film Polite People and Johannes from 2010. He also is president of the anti-bullying organization Rainbow Children that he formed in 2002.

dr. seUss (Writer) Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Geisel in Springfield, Mass., on March 2, 1904. After attending Dartmouth College and Oxford university, he began a career in advertising. Dr. Seuss’s first children’s book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, hit the market in 1937, changing the world of children’s literature forever. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984, two Emmy awards and three Academy awards, Seuss was the author and illustrator of 44 books, many of which have been made into audiocassettes, animated television specials and videos. young and old alike. His Broadway career includes the standard “Young and Foolish” from the hit show Plain and Fancy as well as Redhead, for which he won the Tony in 1959. His film and TV career started when he was in his late 50s with the role of Professor Shorofsky in the movie Fame and the “Fame” TV series, and continued with many small roles in movies such as Space Jam and The Story of Us. Born in 1920 in Berlin, he escaped the Nazis via music scholarships in Rome and Cincinnati and settled in NY. The music from The Grinch is his most enduring achievement.

Matt aUgUst (Director) has directed all the Broadway, Los Angeles and national tour productions of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! the Musical. He has just completed production on the film How to Get to Candybar, which he co-wrote and directed. Selected past work includes the original musical Liberty Smith at Ford’s Theatre, DC, the Australian production of The Full Monty, many plays for the Old Globe, including Two Gentlemen of Verona on the Outdoor Festival Stage, A Christmas Carol which ran for five years at Ford’s Theatre, as well as productions for The Acting Company (off-Broadway and tours), Theatre — Works (Palo Alto), LA Theatre Works, Hangar Theatre, Cherry Lane (NYC), Long Wharf, Sundance institute, Summer Play Festival, Cap 21, Next Stages (Boston), National Shakespeare Company, NY Musical Theatre Festival. He co-founded the Fairbanks Shakespeare Company, co-wrote the book for the musical Meet John Doe (Helen Hayes Award Nomination) and wrote the play Fool and Proper Wages (Seirus Theatre, LA). He is a Drama League Fellow, Phil Killian Directing Fellow (Oregon Shakespeare Festival), Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center Directing Fellow and holds an MFA from CalArts.

She recently choreographed Hairspray at the Engeman Theatre and musically staged the reading of I Am Getting My Act Together... at the York Theatre. Currently, she’s the choreographer for the ongoing bus tour “The Ride” in NYC. choreographer for Annie at the Muny in St. Louis. Director/Choreographer for Ragtime at Lyric Stage, where the show was nominated in 14 categories for the Theatre League Awards. With Ragtime at North Carolina Theatre she won best choreographer at the Triangle Awards. Director/Choreographer for Chicago, Jesus Christ Superstar and Annie at Fort Salem Theatre. She just directed a reading of the play Art and Science starring Len Cariou and Mario Cantone. Next year her work will be seen off-Broadway in the one-man musical And Then I Wrote a Song About It.

cOLLe BUstin (Sound Design) has been working in the field of audio engineering and design since his first exploration into theatre, most lately as production sound engineer for Legally Blonde, Fiddler on the Roof and Grease for their 2010 national tours. Working on productions across the globe in more than 10 countries spread across three continents. Production credits include: Reel to Reel in Beijing and at Edinburgh Fringe, 101 Dalmations The Musical, Chicago, 42nd Street, The King and I, Sweet Charity, to name a few. Colle has designed sound for regional theatres such as Gateway Playhouse and Revelation Theatre for shows that included Evita, The Full Monty, Sugar, Gypsy, Fosse and Lovelace The Musical. Prior to 1950, there were 374 historic theatres in Georgia. The Fox Theatre Institute discovered that since then, 114 have been demolished, leaving 260 historic theatres still standing.

Historic theatres work as magnets that attract tourists who seek both historic sites and quality arts and entertainment. Tourism is Georgia’s second-largest industry and the state ranks among the top five most visited states for heritage tourists.

It takes 35-50 years for an energy-efficient new building to save the same amount of energy that is

lost when an existing building is demolished. By advocating for Georgia’s historic theatres, the Fox Theatre Institute is helping preserve the environment. After all, the greenest building is the one that’s already built!

Students who are exposed to the arts have higher GPAs and SAT scores, and have lower drop-out rates. The Fox Theatre Institute has helped Georgia theatres expand their programming to include arts-related workshops and camps.

The Fox Theatre Institute, a resource for historic theatres, was founded in 2008 to offer advice and consultation on the topics of restoration, preservation, and operations. The organization has since made a significant impact, creating a movement of progress for arts development across Georgia that is evidence of why this mission is so important. Did you know:


D id Dr. Seuss mean a lot to you? There are places you can go, it’s

true. Whether you’re big or small, short or tall, red or blue, here are three fun things to see and do. So enjoy the man, read his books. Take a trip, have a look!

1. Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden at the Springfield Museums. Springfield, Mass. Nearly a century ago, Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield. He grew up on Fairfield Street, the son of a parks commissioner. When Geisel began writing children’s books under the pen name Dr. Seuss, he peppered his stories with references to Springfield. The city created the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden at the Springfield Museums as a tribute to Geisel and his imaginative work. Open year-round, the sculpture garden is divided into three large groupings of familiar characters. (catinthehat.org)

2. Universal Studios Orlando’s Seuss Landing at Islands of Adventure. Orlando. This colorful, whimsical section of the massive Universal Studios theme park features kiddie rides that also appeal to nostalgic parents. (universalorlando.com)

3. Geisel Library. San Diego. In 1991, Geisel died in La Jolla, Calif. Four years later, the University of California at San Diego renamed this library building in his honor. Appropriately enough, it looks like a flying saucer, which has given rise to rumors that it was in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (it wasn’t). It houses the university’s arts library and the Mandeville Special Collections Library, which houses 8,500 Seuss artifacts. You won’t be able to see these items year-round, but the university does put on regular exhibits of Seuss materials, typically during the summer session and the month of March, for Geisel’s birthday.
