W hen Apple CEO Steve Jobs died some weeks ago, I saw many people passing around vid-

eo and text from a 2005 commencement speech he gave at Stanford University. In it,

Jobs talked about the effect that being aware he was going to die had on his life. Part of his com-

mencement speech read:

“Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma —

which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions

drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart

and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is

secondary.”

His words resonate with many of the questions we are asking in our theme for this year at

church, “Moving Forward.” In order to move forward in our lives, we have to know who it is that

we wish to become; we have to listen to the life that our heart and our passion are calling us into.

One of the wonderful things about a religious community like ours is that it serves as a living

manifestation of our hopes and dreams for the world.

For our passion to find voice and action in community, though, we must share it with others. This

is part of the reason we asked people to share their stories of what this church has meant to

them as part of our stewardship efforts this year. If you haven’t done this yet, please do. There is

space on pledge cards just for this. Also, we hope you will share these stories with us in conver-

sations, emails, and small groups. We know that, within our community of members and friends,

there is great passion for new ways of living in the world. In the coming weeks, see how sharing

this passion and these stories with someone else helps you move forward!

Symposium With Author Robert Putnam, Ph.D.

ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4, FROM 7:30 A.M. TO 1:30 P.M., IN FOGELSON FORUM AT TEXAS HEALTH DALLAS, the Attending Clergy Association (ACA) of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospitals will host the 17th Annual Symposium “Are We in This Together or Am I in It Alone?: Culture and Reli-gion in the USA.” This educational program featuring keynote speaker Rob-ert Putnam, Ph.D., author of many books including Bowling Alone and Ameri-can Grace, will explore the American religious and cultural landscape.

“We want to explore how we as Americans relate to each other in the world around us,” said John Engelhard, Senior Chaplain for Texas Health Presbyter-ian Hospitals in Dallas, Denton, Plano, Kaufman, and Allen. “Think of our ex-periences, either as a community or as an individual. There’s the inability of Congress to compromise and solve problems, fewer people choosing to mar-ry, millions of Americans with no health coverage, economic segregation and declining membership in religious communities. And through it all, are we in it alone? Or are we in it together?”

A distinguished panel of community religious leaders and scholars will offer responses to Dr. Putnam’s presentation. For more information or to register, visit http://TexasHealth.org/ACASymposium or call 214-345-4220.

CARING FOR AGING PARENTS, PARTNERS AND LOVED ONES

This workshop for family members, partners, and caregivers will be held on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, FROM 9 A.M. TO 3 P.M., at First Church.

The cost is $15, which covers a catered lunch for all participants. The topics addressed will include a medical overview of Dementia by Rob Garrett, MD, Geriatric Psychiatrist; Family Dynamics and Com-munication by John Hoper, Ph.D., Geriatric Psy-chologist; Legal and Ethical Issues by Merra George, Staff Attorney with Dallas Legal Hospice; Financial Planning by Carol Franzen, LMSW, Geri-

atric Care Manager; and, finally, Community Resources presented by Su-zanne Cobb and Linda Ross from The Senior Source. To register, go to www.dallasuu.org, email [email protected], or call 214-884-1211.

YOUR INPUT IS NEEDED AT THE COMMUNITY IMPACT FORUMS ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6, AT 10:00 AND 11:15 A.M., IN ROOM 302. The church is creating a stra-tegic plan for the next three to five years based on our End State-ments, and there are several teams of volunteers and staff meeting to address each End Statement. Each team will hold a forum to review their findings with the congregation, beginning with the Community Im-pact Team (social action, justice, and community service). Come hear the report summary, ask questions, and share your ideas.

Moving Forward 2012

As you know, under the renewing-pledge sys-tem we began for 2011, any pledges made to support the work of the church renew automat-

ically each year. Instead of starting from zero each year, we now begin our budgeting process with pledges from 80% of our voting members. These pledges will renew automatically for 2012. However, there are 20% of our voting members who do not have a pledge for 2011 (and subse-quently 2012) and from whom we’ve not yet heard. We need to hear from every member: We need 100% participation to meet the needs of our vibrant, growing church and sustain the new building.

We are also asking that those with existing pledges consider paying monthly by credit

card, automatic checking, or bank bill-pay. This helps the church create consistent income to sustain its work. Please consider making your church pledge a monthly payment. To do this, go to www.dallasuu.org and click on the Support tab at the top of the homepage to go to E-giving, or contact the church office at 214-528-3990.

First Unitarian is an amazingly generous

church. Right now, our pledges for 2012 are up 3% over last year. In this ever-changing economy, that’s remarkable. Still, to enhance our programs and support the needs of a 50,000-square-foot facility, we need at least a 5% increase in pledge income. Please consider making that step, and help promote and sustain our liberal religious presence in Dallas.

In a nutshell, here are the three points to consider:

1) We need 100% of voting members to pledge.

2) We need more pledges to be paid on a monthly basis.

3) We are asking all members, if they can, to increase their pledges by at least 5%.

Please help make a difference in Dallas, in our world, and in the lives of you and your family by support-ing the work of First Church.

Our stewardship drive for 2012 ends November 6th. If we haven’t yet heard from you, it’s time!

STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT FIRST-SUNDAY COLLECTION ON NOVEMBER 6TH TO BENEFIT NORTH DALLAS SHARED MINISTRIES NORTH DALLAS SHARED MINISTRIES (NDSM) IS AN INTERFAITH OR-GANIZATION WHICH PROVIDES FOOD, FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE, CLOTHING, SCHOOL UNIFORMS AND SUPPLIES, EYE GLASSES, JOB COUNSELING, DAYTIME AND EVENING ESL CLASSES, AND MEDICAL CARE FOR THE WORKING POOR, THE ELDERLY, THE DISABLED, AND THE MOST VULNERABLE MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY. NDSM seeks not only to provide tangible assistance, but also to help clients make sound decisions which can lead to a more stable future. All clients are carefully screened to determine their need and willingness to make appro-priate behavioral changes. In 2010 NDSM assisted over 60,000 individu-als and family members, and is on track to help as many or more in 2011.

NDSM mirrors our UU values of service to others and interfaith coopera-tion for the common good. Our church helped found NDSM in 1983, and now joins with 48 other churches to serve our larger community. NDSM relies on over 500 volunteers (and just one paid non-medical staffer) to deliver services six days each week.

Our church continues to be a stalwart supporter, providing both volun-teers and an annual pledge, as well as financial support from individual members. Please be generous in your contribution to this wonderful or-ganization. To learn more about NDSM, please visit www.ndsm.org or contact NDSM/First Church liaison, Trish Houck, at [email protected].

Dedication of Infants and Children Sunday, December 18th

In our free faith, we acknowledge the divine spark within each child and believe that each child born possesses the potential to be one more redeemer.

On December 18th, during both worship services, we will celebrate a Service of Dedication during which we will

> commit ourselves to the infants and children of our church, to their nurture and their growth;

> pledge to love and cherish them always, in times of struggle as well as gladness;

> pray that we may be worthy guardians of these young lives; > covenant to build a community in which they will grow surrounded by

beauty, embraced by love, and cradled in the arms of peace;

Children are never too old to be dedicated. If your family would like to par-ticipate in this Service of Dedication, please contact Lillian Drab-Braddick at [email protected] or 214-884-1222.

SUPER SUNDAY IS NOVEMBER 27TH!

So our dedicated volunteer teachers can enjoy the Thanks-giving holiday weekend, children five years of age and older and youth in their teens will gather in Raible Chapel for a morning of story, song, and seasonal crafts.

Children four year of age and younger will meet friends for play in the Nursery.

Parent and teen volunteers are needed to assist younger children in the creation of one-of-a-kind Chanukah and Christmas ornaments.

To let us know that you’ll help with the fun, please contact Dawn Hosking at [email protected] or 214-884-1215.

MUSIC Annual Memorial Concert on November 13th Our annual Memorial Concert, now called MASTERWORKS CONCERT, takes place on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13 AT 7 P.M., in the Sanctuary. This concert of gratitude and remembrance will be presented by the Sanc-tuary Choir, professional orchestra and so-

loists. A string quartet will play an exuberant Beethoven quartet, and the entire ensemble will perform Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem, considered one of the most beautiful of all 20th century choral/orchestral pieces. Built on Gregorian chant, this lush, romantic work captures the mystery, hope, and terror of death.

As in years past, we will take one or two names of your friends or family members who have died. This year, names will be printed in the program, though not read aloud at the concert. Names may be submitted at the Music table in Channing Hall on October 30 and No-vember 6, or at www.concertsintheclearning.org. We need to receive names no later than noon on Mon-day, November 7 for inclusion in the printed program.

Food and Clothing Collection for North Dallas Shared Ministries

Throughout the month of November, our Youth will spearhead collection of clean, gently used clothing for North Dallas Shared Ministries. In doing so, our church joins with 48 other congregations in the community to serve those in need.

Clean, gently used clothing and shoes are needed. Our Youth will provide color-ful donation boxes for your convenience. Fall and winter clothing is most appre-ciated, and clothing that is suitable for outdoor labor (jeans, sweatshirts, jack-ets). Children’s clothing is always needed, especially coats for the coming cold weather. Packages of new underwear and socks for all ages are also welcome.

Our Youth will sort all donations in preparation for transport to NDSM. This is a very labor-intensive job! Please help them by donating items which are ready to display, as NDSM does not have facilities for laundry or dry cleaning.

In addition First Church will be collecting non-perishable food of all types for those hardest hit by the current economic downturn. Most needed items in-clude flour, sugar, cooking oil, canned meat and fish, soups, canned fruit, pea- nut butter and jelly. Hygiene items such as bath soap, shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste are also appreciated. Look for receptacles on the patios on Sunday mornings.

As we enter this season of Thanksgiving, please take a moment to share with those in our community who are in need. Thank you very much!!!

E-WASTE RECYCLE DAY SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Normandy Avenue

Round up your old com- puters, monitors, and printers. Search your drawers for digital cameras, cell phones, and batteries. Final-ly get rid of that vintage refrigerator or freezer and bring it all to First Church’s 4th annual electronic recycling event. Togeth-er we have kept over 3 tons of electronic waste out of landfills. Help our environ-ment by putting unwanted electronics back into the manufacturing process. There is a small charge to recycle CRT monitors and TVs and to wipe hard drives.

Will the courts save us from chemical polluters? Or will corporate Ameri-ca succeed in limiting our ability to seek damage claims? At 10 a.m., in Room 301, attorney Steve Jensen examines the strengths and weaknesses of lawsuits for money damages and discusses the role of litigation in protecting our environment. Find out what environmentally concerned UUs can do to help.

Congratulations to Danny Charles, son of Deanna and Rich Charles, on winning an internship at Boeing for next summer. Danny, a YRUU alumnus and current student at Northwest-ern, was one of just 14 applicants selected for this opportuni-ty from a field of more than 400.

Kudos to YRUU member John Schadegg, a senior at Wood-row Wilson High School, on being named a National Merit semifinalist. John is the son of Delores Cullivan and Bill Schadegg.
