Our staff are all Mon-tessori trained and very experienced teachers from a variety of Montessori organizations. All are dedicated teachers, so our environment is prepared according to the precepts of Dr.

Montessori, whose method could be summarized in the words: “Follow the child”. Most of us, when we really think about it, realize that our children’s happiness is way ahead of every other priority that we have. Montessori education supports the child’s broad spectrum of needs. It has been recognized internationally for its effectiveness for many decades. Children in the first five years are very busy. They are constructing them-selves, and so are seeking individuality. They would say, simply: “Help me learn to do it myself”. Independence is the watchword of the Montessori teacher, and once children can “do it”, they gain confidence for the next task. Freedom is essen-tial, for every child is a unique learner. Children often feel the need to repeat a task again and again. There is an important place for group activity, but it must be balanced with independent work. Yes, we call it work, because it is the child’s work, and it deserves all the respect from us and from other children that we grant to our grown-up work. Dr. Montessori believed that an environment prepared with knowledge of the kinds of things children can truly learn from by using combined with caring and knowledgeable guidance from the teacher would lead to develop-ment of mental concentration. She wrote that “The first essential for the child’s development is concentration. The child who concentrates is immensely happy”. Another need we see is in today’s children’s sense of relationship to nature. Thomas Berry wrote: “Teaching children about the natural world should be treated as one of the most important events in their lives.” We agree. We take weekly nature walks, have animals visit and have frequent nature studies featuring animals and plants including keeping many pets in the classrooms.
