In addition, should you indulge in them, you may also be able to participate more purposefully in our stewardship program which commences on the 7 th of this month. Pray for God’s guidance- this is a spiritual decision- and be open to God’s promptings. God sometimes calls us to give more than we feel is logical or comfortable. Stretch (like so many parishioners have done) beyond your comfort zone. It’s not the amount of money you pledge; it’s the commitment to give sacrificially to God’s work. The Bible repeatedly tells us that God richly blesses those who make a prayerful commitment to give faithfully and sacrificially of their treasure-and our experience reinforces that. Saint Paul told this to the Church at Corinth when they were concerned about what and how they should give, “They gave offerings of whatever they could- far more than they could afford-pleading for the privilege of helping out in the relief of the poor Christians…What explains it was that they had first given themselves unreservedly to God and to us. The other giving simply flowed out of the purposes of God working in their lives.” His message to us is exactly the same. Will we heed it? With every good wish, Faithfully, Harry Krauss

A Word From Our Dean... Dear Cathedral Family, As we move into high autumn and begin to feel little twinges of anxiety because we’ve just realized that there are only a few weeks left till Christmas, I’d like to suggest three verbs which, should you indulge in them, might give you not only relief, but also allow you to grow and mature in your faith. In addition, should you indulge in them, you may also be able to participate more purposefully in our stewardship program which commences on the 7th of this month. (These activities have been passed on to us by our friends at All Saints’ Church, Beverly Hills, California.)

THINK. PRAY. STRETCH. Think about your relationship with God. Think about what belonging to our Cathedral Family means to you. Count the blessings that God has brought into your life.

From The Deacon’s Bench

Dear Friends in Christ, It’s amazing to me how quickly things can change. Our sweltering heat of summer has given way to lovely Fall temperatures, and as we begin our new Church-and-Church School year, I am finding reasons to already look forward to snow— yes, I do love it!— and time to sit quietly with embroidery or a good book, to replenish the well, so to speak. I am noting some books that you might read this Fall, if you haven’t already. They will be very good “grist for the mill.” First, we will be discussing “The Shack,” by William P. Young, in Synod Hall on Wednesday evening, November 17 at 6:00 PM. Many parishioners have already read it— Bob Nastasi has read it three times!! It seems to be a book that looks at faith, healing and rebirth in a whole new way. Please join our reading group for simple supper and discussion. Second, I purchased a book at Convention this past weekend, called “Christianity For The Rest Of Us.” The author, Diana Butler Bass will be the keynote speaker at our annual Diocesan Convocation, which will be held at the Orms Street Marriott in Providence, on Saturday, March 5, 2011. Ms. Bass is an acclaimed author, speaker and scholar, specializing in American religion and culture. I will share with you that I have already read the first few chapters, and I am hooked! Third, there are two books that I highly recommend after listening to Canon Andrew White preach at the Convention Eucharist last week. Canon White is also known as “The Vicar of Baghdad.” There is a video clip about him on the “Diocesan Convention” page of the Diocesan website. His presentation of the day-to-day work of his church is simply stunning, and I hope these two books— “The Vicar of Baghdad,” and “Suffer The Children”— find their way into your hands. Both are available at the Resource Center of the Diocese, and we can make them available at our Coffee Hour in case you would like to purchase them. Last, but by no means least, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your prayers, thoughts, cards, help and presence when my father, Judson Harper Mays, died during the late summer. The flowers that were sent to us were especially lovely, and they were a welcome gift. This congregation has been and continues to be a most welcome blessing to me and my family. Your sister in Christ,

Deacon Barbara

From Our Candidate for Holy Orders

My Dear Friends in Christ, Where has the past year gone? It was one year ago that Bishop Wolf assigned me to the Cathedral of St. John and to the supervision of Dean Krauss. It has been a wonderful and exciting year to be part of the cathedral family. However, my time with you is quickly coming to an end. I will be departing with many mixed emotions. In leaving the cathedral, I have a sense of sadness and loneliness in my heart, while at the same time; I look forward to a new chapter in the ordination process and in my life. As most of you know, I will begin a deacon/curacy on November 1, 2010 at St. Luke’s in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. I will be part of a shared ministry team with Fr. Greg Prior who will be the new interim rector of St. Luke’s. Bishop Wolf has set my diaconate ordination date for Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 10 AM here at the Cathedral of St. John. God willing, I will be ordained priest at St. Luke’s Church sometime next summer. If you would be so kind as to indulge me in this trip down memory lane, I would like to express my sincerest thanks to each and every one of you because you all played an important role in my formation as a Christian, Episcopalian and as a future priest. My first contact with the Cathedral of St. John came in the form of a telephone call from Dean Krauss. I remember it quite vividly because I was flying down 95 south in the car coming home from the seminary when Mr. Dean called. He informed me of the bishop’s decision assigning him as my supervisor. He seemed a little wary of the entire prospect because he didn’t know me and coming from EDS I can only imagine what he was thinking. However, over the past year, Dean Krauss has become not only a dear friend and mentor; he has become an example to me of a priest’s priest. I saw in him the model of humility, honesty and generosity on so many levels. He once told me something I will never forget about the priesthood. He said, “John, you have to love your people.” Above all the lessons, instructions and theological discussions that we had, I feel that was the most important treasure I will take from our Dean and this church. That, more than anything, will hold me in good stead as a Christian, a son, a husband, a father, and most of all, a priest. I met Deacon Barbara while I was in the Diocesan Discernment Program. I interviewed her as part of the requirements of that program. We quickly became friends and as a result I became friends with her wonderful husband, Roger Stock. Barbara became a wealth of information about the ordination process because of her years of service on the Diocesan Commission on Ministry. We had many long conversations at the church and around her dining room table. She always answered my questions and was a valuable resource. We also connected on a much deeper level. Barbara and I are the same age and we were both brought up Roman Catholic. Our backgrounds are similar and the stories and experiences we shared created bonds of respect and affection. Deacon Barbara taught me how to use the altar book and how to assist at the altar. She taught me the differences and similarities of diaconate and priesthood always emphasizing that a priest is always a deacon. Diaconate is not just another step in the ordination process. Diaconate implies a life of service to the community and to the world, as well. One of my fondest and warmest memories of Deacon Barbara was sitting in her kitchen learning to sing the Exsultet with Deacon Joyce Thorn. I have gone on long enough. From the very beginning, you all welcomed Linda and me into the Cathedral Family. We are deeply grateful to Leah and Bobby Nastasi and to Lynn and Andy Costa, as well as our rector, Bishop Wolf, Bishop Joslin and the entire cathedral chapter. Thank you for your many kindnesses and the memories you have given us. I will hold you in a special place in my heart, my thoughts, and my prayers. I will never forget how this wonderfully diverse community helped to shape and form me, God willing, as a priest. May God bless you and keep you. We remain faithfully yours, Linda Succi & John Higginbotham

220th Diocesan Convention held on October 23 Convention Eucharist on October 22

The Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island held its 220th convention on October 23, with the Convention Eucharist preceding it on Friday evening at The Cathedral of Saint John, Providence. Due to Bishop Wolf’s illness, The Rt. Rev. David Joslin, Assisting Bishop of Rhode Island presided at the Eucharist. The guest preacher was The Rev. Canon Andrew White, who is also known as, “The Vicar of Baghdad.” Canon White gave a splendid talk about his work in his parish in Iraq. He told us that his parish started out as 25 individuals, and, though he takes no credit for it himself, he says that the congregation has grown to an astounding 4,000 members! In his talk, he explained how difficult it is to be a Christian in such a heavily Muslim country. For example, he recounted that, when his last catechetical class was baptized, he counseled them to be very quiet about their conversion, but their zeal led them to public accounts of their conversion and baptism. At least 10 have been murdered since then. He spoke of the children and their hope for the future, and their joy in being Christians. He told us that his budget at the church began at about $45,000 a year, but now has grown to $150,000 per month, because they feed and help their congregants as well as offer them spiritual support and Eucharist. He said they never know where the money will come from, but it always comes. He said that he would like to take credit for this immense growth and active life, but, he says, it is the congregation that makes this very special church work so well. His talk was very inspirational, and the members of the convention were very pleased to have heard him. Convention convened on Saturday morning at 9AM. The Rev. William Locke ran the meeting for Bishop Wolf, but she was in attendance. New clergy since the last convention were introduced to the convention membership, including The Rev. Joyce T. Thorne from our parish, who now serves as Deacon at Christ Church, Lonsdale. Recognition of Diaconal Ministry in the Tradition of Saint Stephen was awarded to The Rev. Leroy “Buck” Close by The Ven. Archdeacon Robin Higbie and Rev. Dcn. Ted Hallenbeck and conferred by the Rt. Rev. Geralyn Wolf. It was awarded to him to recognize his many years of service for Haitian and Social Justice. Reports were given by The Mission Task Force, The Committee on Canons, Commission on Congregational Development, The Commission on Finance, The Committee on Program and Budget and The Committee on Resolutions. A report was given by the Diocesan Treasurer. The Diocesan budget was passed as presented. All committee and commission reports will be published on the Diocesan website. The following resolutions were presented: 1. Inclusive Church Paperwork The resolution was passed as presented. 2. Handicap Accessibility at Diocesan Events The resolution was passed as presented. 3. Transparency in Finances and Leadership The resolution was passed as presented. 4. Mutual Ministry Review The resolution was passed as presented. 5. Merger of Diocese This resolution was recommended to be referred to The Standing Committee

by the Resolution Committee, but it was entered into consideration with the introduction of an amendment. The amendment stated that it is strongly recommended that a discussion begin regarding the possible merger of our diocese with Massachusetts, Western Massachusetts or Connecticut. It does not say that we are IN talks, only that we consider it. The resolution passed as amended.

Page 6: November 2010 The Record, Newsletter of The Cathedral of Saint John

6

6. Begin study of possible merger between the Diocese of Rhode Island and a neighboring diocese. The resolution was set aside, as it was a second resolution on the same topic as #5.

7. Balance the Diocesan budget by a one year reduction of all staff compensation and continuing the compensation freeze through 2011, protecting core ministries The resolution was recommended for referral to the Commission on Finance

8. Retain Director of Christian Formation and Resource Center The resolution was recommended for referral to the Commission on Finance.

Bishop Wolf’s Address was given in reduced form, as she was having difficulty speaking. The entire address will be available on the Diocesan website. The Diocesan election results are as follows: Standing Committee -- 4 years — Rev. Anita Schell-Lambert Diocesan Council -- 3 years Rev. William Locke and Rev. -Thoughts from the Senior Warden-

Junior Warden’s Report: November, 2010

We had a few of our Weekend Warriors show up to reinstall the ornamental “crown” on the 1st Saturday of October. It’s good to see it back in place. Thanks to Harrington, William, Everett, and Winston for helping with painting and the reinstallation. Hopefully we will have time to make the necessary carpentry repairs and finish painting before the cold weather sets in. As yet we did not get to paint the plaster repairs in the Nave, but it is on the list of fall/winter projects. The Hobart dishwasher in the kitchen is leaking badly from the “Booster” and is in need of repairs. Our options to date are; replace the leaking hot water “booster” for ~$3500.00, purchase a reconditioned “Warewasher” ~$4000.00 plus installation costs, or purchase a new “Warewasher” ~$8500.00 plus installation costs. Folks from the Soup Kitchen have agreed to help with the cost of getting this taken care of, but I do not have details. Additionally the waste disposal is not always functioning properly. They are listed at $1880.00 in the Grainger catalogue plus the installation costs. Thanks for your support and prayers! See you in church!

Late summer and early autumn brought us great opportunities for fun, fellowship, and support of our

parish missions. An early chill in the air forced the parish picnic to be held inside, but certainly didn’t dampen our spirits. Food and laughter were both in good supply and it seemed that indoor picnics can be just as much fun as outdoor ones.

In mid September we held an evening of ‘Dancing with the Stars of St. John’ to benefit the 1810 Society. The evening featured wonderful championship dancing performances by Linda Succi and several local dancers. And along with those performances came another from our Candidate for Holy Orders, John Higginbotham who sang ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ as his wife Linda and her dance partner swirled around the floor making it all look so easy. Our deepest thanks to Linda, John, and everyone who participated.

And in October we had our 2nd Annual Silent Auction to benefit the Food Pantry. We gathered a nice variety of offerings for auction and raffle as many donors were happy to help with our mission. There were refreshments, laughter, and good music from Brink Bush. Unfortunately, the event was sparsely attended. However, due to the great generosity of those who did participate and two members of the parish who couldn’t be there, we raised more funds for the Food Pantry than we had last year. Our gratitude goes to those who attended and contributed to this event and my personal thanks to the people who spent months helping to bring it together.

It is my hope that as we move forward we will find more parishioners presenting ideas and the willingness to act on them.

God’s Peace To All Leah
