The sand season is here! By the time you get this, our first Glamis trip of the season will be under way, and Veterans Day and Thanksgiving are right around the corner. Thank to everybody who has re- newed their membership. We have updated the member list on page 5. Because of November 11th falling on a Wednesday this year, Jim Kas- tle and other members will have a four day weekend to spend at the dunes for Veterans day. Jim will arrive late Wednesday evening (November 10th) after leaving from the club meeting. Thanksgiving will be the first big trip of the year for many of us, and the Bacons, Fords, and Schellingers will be spending the week at the dunes which will allow members to arrive and set up the weekend before Thanksgiving and return as soon as they can get off work that week. It makes for easy back to back trips. Getting Ready for Glamis The Tuesday night crew set up John’s old trailer as a shop that they will store at Glamis for the season, and Walt summarized the day: On Saturday Oct 16th, 9 of the usual suspects met at John Cole’s place, and started cleaning out his old buggy trailer. It took us all day to rearrange storage bins, and installing work benches and tools that will come real handy out in the dunes should any breakage occur. We now have a drill press, and 5500 generator, and a chop saw, and large vice on the trailer tong, that were all donated for use in the trailer, along with a lot of parts and sup- plies, that we have been hauling up and down the highway for years. The sand season is here! By the time you get this, our first Glamis trip of the season will be under way, and Veterans Day and Thanksgiving are right around the corner.

Thank to everybody who has re-newed their membership. We have updated the member list on page 5.

Because of November 11th falling on a Wednesday this year, Jim Kas-tle and other members will have a four day weekend to spend at the dunes for Veterans day. Jim will

arrive late Wednesday evening (November 10th) after leaving from the club meeting.

Thank all of the “usual suspects” John, Scott, Jim, Dean, Barry, PJ, Dave, and Bandy for all their help and hard work. A Thank You to Matt, for going to town for our lunch.

I got a new barber too, Anna had her shop open, and cut my hair, after the guys didn’t need me for a while, so I got to take a break from the action. We topped the day off with pizza, pasta ,salads and draft beer at “The Pizza Factory” In Phelan. -This was a great day, Walt

The annual Thanksgiving trip to the dunes is coming up soon, and it is one of the biggest trips of the year. With many members spending over a week at the dunes, people will begin arriving on Friday, November 19th and stay through at least the Monday after Thanksgiving, November 29th. We will once again be having a club pot luck Thanksgiving din-ner on Thursday November 25th. Mona and Walt will be cooking Turkeys, and Nancy will once again cook Ham. Beyond that if everybody brings pot luck side dishes it should be a great meal as always. If you want to let people know what you’re bringing, you can mention it on the trip signup page on the club website. As an added bonus at the Thanksgiving dinner, we will be hold-ing a raffle for Mama Jeannie’s pizza gift certificates that she do-nated for the picnic but we didn’t put out. For $1 each you can buy tickets to have a chance for one of two large pizzas.

Online Newsletter Delivery As many of you have seen, we are now posting newsletters online as soon as they are finished. This is a way to see the latest club info without waiting for the mail. The site we use, www.issuu.com/inlandempireoffroad makes it really easy to view the .pdf of the lat-est or even past issues of the newsletter online by flipping pages or zooming in, or you can always print out the newsletter from there if you desire. We have heard from some members that this means they no longer need a printed copy of their newsletter delivered via the mail. We realize that some members still prefer the printed option, and it will still be the norm, but if you feel you don’t need it just let me know by e-mail to [email protected] and we can remove you from the mailing list and save the club some cost and maybe even save some trees. See, look how green us off-roaders can be!

When we last left our explorers, they were enjoying the Seattle area (continued from last month): From there we all traveled down to Renton where we chartered a Sea Plane for a tour of Seattle and the surrounding areas. The pilot was a young guy and the plane was a 1957 DeHavilland “Beaver”. It looked brand new, with a radial 9 cylinder engine. Cindy sat in the co-pilot seat, Linda and the twins in the middle and Dave and I in the back. None of us had ever flown in a float plane before, so we were a little nervous. The take off was smooth, as we left Lake Washington, we flew over Bill Gates’s 54,000sqft home, other beautiful lake front mansions. We flew east over Redmond, (where Microsoft and Amazon.com is located), over lush farm land, horse ranches, and climbed to 4000’. We flew into the Cascades, over rugged mtns. Laced with logging roads, snow was still in the crags, rivers were everywhere and Mt. Rainier, Mt. Baker and Mt. Hood were all off in the distance. We turned west and crossed over the suburbs and past the Space Needle, out over Puget Sound, turned back to view the Seattle sky line, and came down for a really smooth landing. It was a fantastic trip and the only way to see Seattle. We left the airport and went to visit a friend from Fallbrook who spends his summer on his 60’ yacht. It’s moored in the harbor with great views of the Space Needle and water front. We enjoyed a nice dinner on board and sat on the fly bridge to see the twinkling lights of the city. Another long day but filled with lots of fun. The next day the Hug-gard’s (now 2 weeks on the road) left us and headed home. It was sad to see them leave. We decided to go visit Mt. Rainier and later

in the day took a scenic antique train ride through the forest. From Washington, we journeyed further north and entered Canada. We had a slight scare with the Canadian Border Patrol, they checked our passports, asked if we had guns, alcohol and cash over $10,000. We answered no, no and no way!! After 15 mins we were on our way and camped just across the border. That afternoon we took the suburban to check out Vancouver. What a ‘neat” city. A mixture of old and new, very cosmopolitan, very clean and friendly. We got lost but really didn’t have a destination, so we rambled thru China Town, the embarcadero, the high rise downtown area, cruise ship terminal, the convention center and even found the Olympic torches from the recent winter games. The water front was bustling with freighters, cruise ships, yachts, speed boats and sea planes. We drove thru Stanley Park, a huge 1000 acre, rural park that the locals flocked to because they were experiencing a heat wave (86 degrees). The next day we returned to Vancouver and visited the “Capilano Suspension Bridge” just 10 miles north of town. Originally built in 1889 it is a very popular tourist destination. The main attraction is a wooden suspen-sion bridge that spans a 250’ deep gorge. It’s a narrow foot bridge that sways and rocks as you cross its 450’ length. It was very exciting and just a little scary. Once on the other side you walk thru an ancient rainforest of old growth fir trees and even get to experience a treetop adventure, walking from tree to tree on several suspended foot bridges, and 100’ above the ground. After a nice lunch we headed further up the canyon to “Grouse Mtn.” and took the aerial tram up to the top. From that vantage

point, 4000’, the city of Vancouver lays out before you down below, with the harbor to the left and the Pacific Ocean to the right. It was another perfect day. The following day we headed back to the US and again were harassed at the border. This time the U.S. Customs official took our RV keys, passports and told us to wait inside the office. 10 mins later they confiscated our home grown avocados and let us go. We headed south for a change and traveled down to Mt. St Helens. The next day we started off at the visitor’s center near the freeway. It was shrouded in fog. The exhibits there are really detailed and a ranger explained to us the history of the Cascade Range and the day the volcano blew. From there you travel 50 miles up to the volcano and slowly get to see the effect of the blast. Even after 30 years it’s very impressive. Each turn in the road opened new vistas. You climb to 4,600’ and at the end is another visitor’s center, only 5 miles from the mountain. The area still is ghostly quiet, with gray rock and ash strewn everywhere. The side that blew off is right in front of you, Spirit Lake is off in the distance. The before, during and after pictures are amazing. There is still a huge area where the trees were blown over and nothing but short grasses have taken over. It was defi-nitely an eerie but awesome sight and well worth the visit. The following day we traveled further south and stopped in at the Monaco RV Factory located just outside Eugene, Or. We took the 2hr factory tour and learned how our motor home was built. It was very interesting to see the various stages of mfg from the chassis, to the frame, electrical, plumbing cabinetry, siding and finally paint. That pretty much ended our trip and the following 2 days were spent pounding pavement back home. The only mishap we encountered was on the second to last night. We were pulling in to “Andersen’s Pea Soup” restaurant in Santa Nella, Ca. I misjudged the transition from the road to the parking lot and proceeded until the drive wheels were no longer on the ground. Yep, we were stuck big time and blocking traffic on a major hi-way right in front of a huge truck stop. The hitch connected to the suburban was buried in the asphalt. I tried lifting the tag axle, in-flating the airbags, tried to jam some 2x4’s under the wheels with no luck. Out of nowhere, several very friendly passer-bys and truckers gathered and offered their assistance. I gladly accepted. We were able to get the suburban unhitched and out of the road. Next thing I know a guy volunteered to crawl under the RV and disconnect the airbag limit bars, with hopes it would raise the coach high enough to gain some traction. It worked and we were finally free. Trust me there is not enough room to write down the entire series of events, but that 2 hrs seemed like eternity. Between cussing, praying and some mechanical help we were unstuck and did no damage to the rig. We were very lucky. Those that helped were very gracious and would not take any money, a “thank you” was all they accepted. The next day was our last travel day and after 21 days on the road, 2800 miles in the RV, 1200 in the suburban, we arrived home safe and sound. It was a great family vacation and one we will treasure with the kids, since it might be our last big va-cation with them. They are heading off to college next year…………………hopefully!!

Havasu 95 Speedway 10-06-10 Went to see Don and Shirley’s, and arrangements were made to go at Havasu 95 Speedway for Bobby Keirns ( Bob Keirns son) first race of the season in his new Factory Stock. I thank Don & Shirley for there great hospitality. And I thank Bob & Laurie Keirns for the pit passes for us. That was great to get out on the track during introductions with the cars, and to go back to where the cars are in the pits. Bobby stared 3rd in his heat race, and got spun -out coming out of turn 4 early in the race. (both/all drivers involved in an incident have to got to the end of the line) this said, Bobby drove all the way to finish 4th. The racers had told him that his new paint job was-n’t going to look so good after he hit the wall in the first race, He didn’t hit the wall, but ended up with some racing strips after the spin-out. Doesn’t this paint job look familiar?

The weather was perfect, and the light breeze made the evening great. Bobby’s son Darrin (Bob’s grandson) races the Bandalleros class, and the next race on Oct. 23rd they will both be racing. I’ll be at the Spook Run for that race, so I’ll say “Good Luck” to the Keirns Motor Sports team. -Walt

Last month we did something new and published a list of Member Families and their expiration dates. This resulted in quite a few renewals over the past month, and we’d like to thank you all for supporting the club. We figured we’d run it another month, and then starting soon we’ll remove the non-current members from the mailing list. Also, if you would rather not receive a printed newsletter, just let us know and that will save the club the postage and printing costs each month.

As with any organization there are guidelines we operate within. Please read and abide by the following: 1. NO FIREWORKS ALLOWED WITHIN CAMP BOUNDRIES 2. DOGS MUST BE KEPT UNDER CONTROL AT ALL TIMES (BLM law) 3. ON A RIDE, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF YOU AND THE VEHICLE BEHIND

YOU. If they stop, you stop and wait for the group to return to you. This prevents separation and in this manner we never leave a member in the dunes. Remember, it’s easier to find you if you stay still: “a moving target is harder to hit”

4. PLEASE OBSERVE THE “RIDE RATINGS” ON THE CLUB BOARD AND SELECT THOSE RIDES YOU WISH TO PARTICIPATE IN. If you wish to lead a ride, put the time and type of ride you want to lead on the board and then stick to that time. No passing on rides (except #6 rides). You can always change your place in line at a break or if you are waved on by the driver ahead of you.

5. REMEMBER, WE ARE A GROUP OF FRIENDS who share a common interest in riding in the desert. Always keep in mind how your actions affect the other members.
