International Jazz Festival Mlaga

As the weather changes and the clocks go back once again, its time for the annual International Jazz Festival to take place in Cervantes Theater, Mlaga, now in its 24th year. Along with showcasing some fantastic national and international talents, the festival also hosts a conference to bring together jazz professionals and students and providing classes on technical aspects and harmony.

This years festival kicks off on Wednesday 10th with Chano Dominguez, Cadiz born and one of the worlds most renowned flamenco pianists.

Chano Domnguezs first project with a flamenco quartet was conceived as a contemporary review of some of the most influential Spanish composers of the past century. Chano combines this musical language with his own and recreates it in Flamenco palos. El Puerto from Isaac Albnizs Iberia suite with its tanguillo and tiento rhythms, Enrique Granadoss Danza de los ojos verdes (The Dance of the Green Eyes) with its buleras, the Danza of Manuel de Fallas El amor brujo (Love, the magician) with its tango and rumba in addition to three of his own themes in line with the same concept: two buleras, Te veo pasar and Mantrera, as well as the ballad Ensueo.

Friday 12th brings The Bad Plus, a jazz trio from Minneapolis, US. For the past ten years The Bad Plus (Reid Anderson, Ethan Iverson and David King) have broken down the walls of jazz convention and created an uncompromising body of work. Few jazz groups in recent memory have amassed such acclaim, and few have inspired such controversy. Their belief in the band ethos and their personal brand of avant-garde populism have put them at the forefront of a new instrumental music movement, drawing audiences both traditional and mainstream. While the bulk of their output has been original music, they have deconstructed songs in the pop, rock as well as the country and classical music idioms.

The final concert of the festival will be Dayna Kurtz, Saturday 13th. Composer, singer and guitarist from New York, Dayna Kurtz has never made things easy for those that have tried to pigeonhole her into a particular music scene or a genre. Kurtz fuses the energy of country, the depth of folk, the rhythm of soul...with a voice as captivating as Nina Simones, as delicate as Joni Mitchells and as affected as Marianne Faithfulls. All of this with unquestionable charisma and personality.

All concerts take place in Teatro Cervantes, tickets can be purchased directly at the theater or by phone (902360295). Franz Ferdinand

Scottish band Franz Ferdinand come to Mlaga this month. Having had 3 successful albums and currently writing their fourth (as yet untitled) album, fans will be sure to hear some new material at this months concert.

The concert also has had a touch of mystery added to it by organisers San Miguel as part of their Unique project. The venue will be announced only a few days prior to the concert. We do know the date it will take place and that there will be only 1200 tickets sold.

Only playing 3 concerts in Spain as part of this San Miguel tour, 600 winners will be chosen and given double passes each. To be in with a chance to win, click like on San Miguel's facebook page.
