A LETTER FROM PASTOR CRAIG

As I sat with one of our members, we visited about the summer we just enjoyed. Each in our own way. We inquired about each other’s health. We talked about related issues of getting older. How are things? “This recession is tough,” he offered. The look on his face verified his words. Layoffs and cutbacks are so painful and difficult. The difficulty

of downsizing was painful for him. Talented people with young families caught in this turbulence. He also wanted to know how things are at church. How’s RLC doing? There are, of course, many ways to answer that. Financially – how’s the budget? Membership – are we growing? Mission – are we getting out there with Christ’s message? How is the leader-ship – council, staff and minis-try teams – lining up? Worship attendance? Youth programs and the like? How’s the build-ing – the campus? The list goes on. He concluded our wonderful visit with a wise insightful metaphor from his business. He said that he and his leadership team have com-pared these times to driving a

car. You steer and try to avoid the potholes and the ditches, all the while looking down the road to where you need to be headed. Well said!

While running the marathon in Chicago, I quickly noticed the number of potholes in the city streets. Had I not seen them, my ankle could have got-ten twisted and the race ended or the pain could have become a factor to the finish line. I too find myself looking down too often and forgetting what lies ahead. There was a finish line I wanted to cross. Potholes are the challenges that can trip us up and keep us from finishing what is most important. I offer this “pothole perspective” of this congregation. We still have much to learn from the

Scriptures. The lack of dedica-tion to grow in the word of God keeps us from strengthening our relationships to our Lord and to each other. I would add another. Our stewardship of God’s resources is not our strength. It needs to be, so that we may know what God has blessed us with and what He has called us to do. It is an area of weakness that needs to be addressed, so that we can live the faithful life in Christ. And finally, I would ask that words of support and encouragement become part of our congrega-tion’s conversation. Ask oth-ers how they are or what you can I do to help them, and offer thanks for a great job done. That is what healthy congrega-tions do.

Potholes can be filled. That’s the good and hopeful news. This is a congregation that I have come to love and I know you aspire to be a stron-ger, healthier and more com-passionate community of faith.

Success is not measured by numbers, but rather by how we strengthen our relation-ship with God and one another. May our Lord steer us toward that end.

Thanks be to God,

Craig Hanson

They also gave quilts to United Children’s Hospital and Clinic in St. Paul and sent quilts and a monetary gift to Haiti.

They thank all of the peo-ple who have donated fabric, thread and yarn. They feel truly blessed by all the dona-tions but do purchase batting and some sheets for backing; hence, the need for a quilt sale. The sale will be held on Thurs-day, November 11 at the Vet-eran’s Day worship and possi-bly one weekend in November (yet to be determined).

They always welcome new members. In fact, they urge you to come and join them on Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

LADIES, MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE 15TH ANNUAL WOMEN’S WINTER TEA

SUNDAY, JANUARY 9, 2011 2:30 P.M., ACT IV IT Y CENTER

The Women’s Winter Tea will be held on Sunday, Janu-ary 9, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. in the Activity Center. This year’s guest speaker is Terry Hitch-cock. At the age of 57, Terry decided to take on the great-est physical challenge of his life—to run 75 consecutive marathons on 75 consecutive days covering more than 2000 miles from St. Paul to Atlanta. As a grieving father who lost his wife to breast cancer, Ter-ry hoped to make a powerful statement about the obstacles faced by single parents every-where and to show how pow-erful love can be. His book, A Father’s Odyssey, has been made into a documentary film called “My Run” narrated by Billy Bob Thorten and will

be followed by a feature film titled “Pushing Life.” Books will be on sale at the tea. Terry gives a portion of each book to the 3 important causes in his life; breast cancer, diabe-tes, and Aspergers/Autism research.

Tickets for the tea will go on sale for $10 each in December. Watch the RLC Updates for more information.

LETTER FROM THE CONGREGATIONAL PRESIDENT

Dear Friends in Christ, Thank you for your gener-

ous response and donations for the Pakistan Flood Relief Fund in honor of Tammy Pust. In one brief weekend we raised over $3,400 for this pur-pose while honoring Tammy’s leadership contribution to our church. Tammy, on behalf of Council, staff and this congre-gation, we are very grateful for you and for sharing your lead-ership gifts with RLC.

We had a significant event the second weekend of Sep-tember. For the first time in a long time, the staff and leader-ship of this church met for a fall planning retreat. Council, staff, and lay leaders for all ministry

teams and committees gath-ered in the Social Hall Friday evening and Saturday to focus on the next steps for RLC and its Vision, Mission and Values. This group was supported by Visioning Taskforce members and some of our recent past presidents.

The purpose was to reflect on our visioning process prog-ress to date and take another step with our Vision, Mis-sion and Values. Communica-tions and connections were the major themes to emerge from our efforts. We affirmed a common focus and next steps for our Vision, Mission and Values. You will be hearing more about a 4-year focus to Connect, Grow, Serve and Go in coming months. We provided input to council, staff and stew-

ardship programs and other important topics for this year. Last but not least, we commit-ted to meet again throughout the year to improve commu-nication, support each other’s efforts, to forge common plans and common goals. We felt the Holy Spirit at work among us during our time together. This meeting was very fruitful and a positive experience for all attendees.

The SIP survey is an impor-tant tool to build connections within our church community. This information will help us to better understand individ-ual and personal skills, inter-ests, and passions (SIP). If you have not completed a SIP sur-vey by now, it is not too late! We need your information to provide appropriate oppor-

tunities for all of us to con-nect and serve. Please contact Laurel Hofeldt or the church office for information on the SIP survey. We are praying for a strong response to shar-ing your personal information (SIP survey). Your personal SIP is a link to connect common skills, interests and passions while growing our ministries.

Your church council, staff and lay leaders, as a part of the retreat process, committed to complete and use the SIP sur-vey information while step-ping up the giving scale and to tithe now or as soon as pos-sible as a response to a “God of abundance.” We prayerfully ask you to join us on this stew-ardship journey.

I am very grateful and thank you for your willingness to

share your personal skills, interest, passions (SIP), and treasures with RLC. Our indi-vidual stewardship response and commitment to how God is calling each of us will drive the resources for God’s good work at RLC. I believe we can and will take a step together to build more connections and grow our church.

Blessings,

Bill Metzger, RLC President

LETTER FROM PASTOR KRIS My arrival at Roseville Lutheran is the beginning of a change for me but also for the congregation. I am thrilled to be your first female pastor. I’m sure there will be growing pains as I learn who you are and how best to serve you and as you guide me in how best to be your pastor.

No matter what challenges arise though, I can promise

you that we will embark on this journey together and I will trust you to guide me along the path,

through the wilderness of being a first-call pastor. I hope you will grow to trust me with your concerns, fears, hopes and the things that make you stay up at night wondering what the point of it all is. My promise to you is to hold those concerns close to my heart, pray for you, walk with you and for us to build relation-ships together that make us stronger people and a stron-ger congregation. I encourage you to come to me and intro-duce yourselves (but you may have to do it several times - my memory is not what it used to

be!) and to provide any input that might help me to serve you better. Together we will trust in God to lead us for-ward, to navigate the changes, to learn and to grow.

If we have not yet met, I will briefly give you the Intro to Kris course:

I grew up on a farm in Tri-mont (south central MN). My parents, brother and his fam-ily still live there. I graduated from the College of St. Benedict with a degree in dietetics and worked as a registered dieti-tian. Neal is employed by 3M. We have been married for 18

years and have been blessed with four children: Wyatt - 16 (junior), Sam (deceased), Adam - 12 (7th grade) and Katie - 9 (4th grade). The kids attend Stillwater schools. I graduated from Luther Semi-nary in 2009 and I could not be happier to be beginning minis-try at RLC. And my last name isn’t as hard as it looks: Kurzy es (yes without the y) key - just put it together and say it with conviction!

Blessings,Pastor Kris

MEET RLC’S NEWEST YOUNG ADULT VOLUNTEER, SARAH ALWORTH!

We are so thankful and excited to welcome Sarah to Roseville Lutheran! We first met Sarah this past summer while she was working at Camp Hiawatha, and were thrilled to learn of her plans to move to the Twin Cities this fall. Not wanting to let opportunity pass us by, we immediately invited Sarah to get involved with Youth Minis-try at RLC and, lucky for us, she accepted! Sarah will be helping out on Tuesday nights with the senior high youth group, FLOCK, and we welcome her with open and grateful arms.

Sarah graduated from Luther College in May with a degree in religion and now helps children

learn to read through an Ameri-corps position in the St. Paul school district. Having been very involved while growing up in her home congregation, First Lutheran in Duluth, Sarah is very excited to be welcomed into a new church community so quickly and have opportuni-ties to get involved and serve.

Roseville Lutheran is still in need of volunteers to work with our junior & senior high students, especially on Sunday mornings. If you would like to be part of an incredible commu-nity that helps students grow in their social and spiritual devel-opment, please contact Megan Moroff at [email protected] or Neal Cannon at [email protected].

Thank you, Sarah, and wel-come to Roseville Lutheran!

MISSION & OUTREACH

As an active member of the Bega Kwa Bega program of the Saint Paul Area Synod, Roseville Lutheran Church has established a compan-ion relationship with another Lutheran congregation in the remote village of Ng’ang’ange, Tanzania.

In both 2007 and 2008, mission teams from Roseville Lutheran traveled to Tanzania to visit and worship with their

sisters and brothers in Christ in Ng’ang’ange. This commu-nity is populated by subsis-tence farming families who do not have the resources to send their brightest and best chil-dren to secondary school. One of the highest priorities of the Ng’ang’ange congregation is to help give these young Chris-tians the life-changing hope of a better education. Roseville Lutheran has committed to

help achieve this goal by spon-soring secondary school stu-dents from the community.

Prayerfully consider becom-ing part of this student spon-sorship outreach ministry at Roseville Lutheran. Sponsor-ships are a great investment toward a brighter future for the student, the congregation, the community, the nation, and Africa.

The annual cost is $360

per student, which covers room, board, and tuition. Make checks payable to Ros-eville Lutheran Church, and write Iringa Student in the memo line. All funds must be received in the church office no later than Sunday Novem-ber 14, 2010.

During mission trips to Tanzania, RLC members meet some of RLC’s sponsored stu-dents. Their smiling faces

and grateful hearts symbolize the brighter future made pos-sible by your support. Give life-changing hope to a young woman or man in Tanzania today.

RLC CONTINUES MONTHLY COLLECTIONS FOR BRIDGING

Bridging is a twenty-year-old nonprofit organization headquartered in Bloomington with warehouses in Bloom-ington, Roseville, and Central Minnesota. Its mission is to provide the economically dis-advantaged in transition with quality furniture and house-hold goods free of charge. The Roseville warehouse opened in 2006 and many RLC mem-bers are already volunteering

at the site. More information can be found on their web site www.bridging.org

MANY WERE BLESSED WITH YOUR GENEROSITY!

Thank you to all that donat-ed school supplies to help those in need at the start of this school year! We were able to help many families with the generous donations of gift cards, folders, crayons and other items that the kids need to start a new school year! In addition to helping families from our own congregation, we also helped many others by giv-ing some of the school supplies to Fairview Community Center and Love INC who then distrib-uted them to area schools. Kids were able to start the school year with the things they need, and hearts were touched by your generosity!

Did your child bring home a lyrics sheet for the Corner-stone Christmas Program? If not, copies are available at the Children’s, Youth and Fam-ily Ministry Desk in the Lobby. Or you can download them at www.rosevillelutheran.org. Go to Children’s Ministry and the Cornerstone.

MP3’s of all of the songs are also available on the website or you can make a CD at the Children’s, Youth and Family Ministry Desk. Blank CD’s are provided for your use.

Please work with your child(ren) at home to learn their songs. We will have brief rehearsal time in Cornerstone in December, but this is not enough time, especially for the younger children.

CORNERSTONE ADVENT ACTIVITY DAY

As part of preparations for the coming of the Christ Child, an Advent Activity Day is held in Cornerstone Ministry. This year’s Advent Activity Day will be held on November 28, dur-ing the Cornerstone hour. All Cornerstone students from 2

years old through 4th grade will participate in creating a craft or decorative item to be used in the home during the Advent season. These are qual-ity items that will last for sev-eral Advent seasons and you will want to use them year after year as you focus on the true meaning of Christmas.

Because the cost of these items is not part of the Chil-dren’s Ministry budget, we ask that each child bring $2.00 with them on Sunday, November 28, to help defray the materials cost. Please place the $2.00 in a white envelope marked “Advent Activity Day” and have your child place it in the Cor-nerstone offering basket.

Extra hands will be needed to assist the students in com-pleting their projects, especial-

ly at the preschool and early-elementary level. Please talk with your child’s small group shepherd and offer to join your child’s small group on Novem-ber 28, to provide an extra set of hands. It is very important that all the children have the opportunity to complete their project on Sunday, November 28. Please help to make this a wonderful experience for all in the preparation for the coming of Christmas by volunteering in your child’s small group.

We are looking for people to prep supplies and/or lead an activity presentation. If you are interested in helping out, con-tact Kim Rehfeldt at [email protected] or 651-487-7752, ext. 226

JOIN THE WALK TO END HUNGER

This year, consider taking a walk before your Thanksgiving meal. Join Catholic Charities in their efforts to end hunger in the Twin Cities by partici-

pating in the 2010 Walk to End Hunger at the Mall of America on Thanksgiving Day, November 25.

Last year, Catholic Charities’ Branch I food shelf in Minneapolis had a 54 percent increase in the number of households served. You can make a difference by joining Catholic Charities’ team to raise money and collect food donations to feed people in our commu-nity.

To join the Catholic Charities Hungerbusters team go to the Walk to End Hunger website (www.walkto-endhunger.org). Click on “Register Here” at the top of the page, then select “Join a Team.” Select the “Catho-lic Charities team,” then complete your registration ($25 registration fee for adults/no registration fee for those under 18). Make your own donation and set your fundraising goal.

After you register and join their team, use the tools on the website to ask friends, family and colleagues to support you by making donations. Everyone who raises $100 (in addition to your registration fee) will

receive the 2010 Walk to End Hunger T-shirt. If you can’t make it to the walk, you can still donate online at www.walktoendhunger.org. Click on “General Dona-tion” and make sure to select “Catholic Charities” as the target for your donation.

Look for emails and correspondence from our missionaries on the Mission and Outreach bulle-tin board, website and in the monthly newsletter.

WARM TOES AND TUMMIES

Help the homeless keep warm this winter. A tradition at Roseville Lutheran Church has been to collect new socks to be given to the homeless at the Dorothy Day Center on December 13th during Ros-eville Lutheran’s monthly Loaves and Fishes dinner. Please look for the collection bins throughout the church from November 27th through December 12th.

SHARING TREE

The RLC will continue the Sharing Tree in Luther Com-mons during the weekends of November 27-28th, December 4-5th, and December 11-12th. Your gifts will benefit children and adults served by sev-eral organizations that RLC continues to support. Please take an ornament for gift, purchase the gift, and place it unwrapped under the tree by Sunday December 12th. The December 12th deadline allows the organizations to

pick up and deliver your gifts prior to Christmas. Thank you for your continued support as we continue the annual Shar-ing Tree tradition.
