Natchez Trace Fall Color

Take a drive along the Natchez Trace to enjoy gorgeous fall colors. One way to reach the Trace is to turn left when you leave the marina, drive 18 miles and you will see the Trace bridge over Rankin High-way. The entrance to the Trace is there, although you will not see a sign.

Welcome to Our Newcomers

Welcome to the Howell family whose names are Victoria, Brock, Na-thaniel, Cora, Mahala, Eleasah and Gabriel. Mom is Kecia and Dad is James. Carl and Sally Acklund arrived last month. Jerry Rea arrived on Halloween.

On the first Saturday of December we show

off for company. You will be hearing about us on

all the media. Literally hundreds come to let their

children tell Santa what they want for Christmas,

look at the beautiful boats decorated for Christ-

mas, enjoy the generosity of the boaters who pro-

vide refreshments, ride the train (adults, too!) and

marvel at the spectacular fireworks. And every-

thing is free! Every Christmas light and every

decoration we can find is displayed on the

grounds and on each boat. We will start decorat-

ing the grounds for Christmas at Midway the

first of November. If you have any ideas for deco-

rating or want to help, we appreciate anything

you can contribute. We are looking forward to

plenty of volunteers as usual to wrap the gifts for

the children. Over 300 were given away last year.

If you cannot be here we will turn your boat lights

on.

What a whirlwind it’s been at Midway! The Halloween Party was wonderful. Over 80 people enjoyed a smorgasbord of food, games, and prizes. The music was so great we just had to dance. Thank you, Billy and Laura Crawford !

A Workshop/Lecture entitled “Linking Life to Litera-ture” will be held at 6pm on November 10 at the Learn-ing Resource Center, Itawamba Community College in Fulton. The workshop will be presented by Robin Lowe of the Tupelo campus. She is an English instructor and re-cipient of the MS Humanities Council Theater Award. FREE! Call 662-862-8039.

Fulton’s Merchants Holiday Open House will be held Sunday, November 22. Super Sales start at 1 pm. Come out and take part in super holiday savings at various Ful-ton merchants. This is an ideal time for your Christmas shopping. Refreshments and beautiful decoration, too!

A Genealogy Fair will be held on Friday, November 6, at the MSU-Itawamba County Extension Office, 304 W. Wiy-gul, Fulton from noon until 5 pm. The fair will enable

beginners a chance to learn more about beginning your genealogy search by using courthouse records, military pensions and preserving family memorabilia. Bring a sack lunch and join us for a fun afternoon learning how to dig up your family history. Please call the Extension office at 662-862-3201 to sign up.

Across the River in Tupelo

Disney On Ice is presenting Disney/Pixar's “Finding Nemo” on Thursday, November 12, 10:30am and 7pm; on Friday, November 13, 10:30am and 7pm; Saturday, November 14 11am, 3pm and 7pm and Sunday, No-vember 15, at 2pm.

Public ice skating is offered 11/21, 11/22, 11/28 and 11/29. There will be two sessions each day from 1-3pm and 4-6pm. The cost in $7 per person and this includes skates. Go to www.bcsarena.com for more information.

The Trent/Severn Canal in Ontario, Canada connects Lake Ontario to the Georgian Bay

section of Lake Huron. It’s a series of man-made canals (with 44 locks) that connect riv-

ers, lakes and ponds to cover the 240 mile stretch.

One of the most interesting parts of the Trent/Severn is lock #44, commonly referred to as

“the Big Chute”. It’s really not a lock. Instead, it’s a motorized marine railway (of sorts) that

actually lifts your boat out of the water, carries it across a narrow spit of land, and deposits

it in the water on the other side.

When you first enter the “Chute” it is submerged which allows your boat to float on. Once

in position, the lock operator straps your boat down to prevent it from falling on it’s side

when the Chute moves out of the water. The Chute then moves forward on rails toward

the land, while at the same time, rising up. Once you’re on land, the entire railway, with

both you and your boat in it, is totally out of the water. The railway continues moving for-

ward, then descends the bank on the other side until you are, once again, floating. The Big

Chute has been in operation since the 1940’s, and allegedly, has never had a mishap.
